Screen turns off and then back on. - HTC EVO 3D

I think this might be a software issue...but wanted another opinion.
sometimes when I hit the power button to turn the screen off, it turns off and then comes back on. It doesn't happen ask the time so I can't figure out if it is me or something causing the phone to wake back up.

It could be a short in the power button. Mine does this occasionally, just make sure you push the button down firmly and quickly.

This happens on my 3D, as well. It also happens on my Shift 4G. I can't recall if it happened on my Evo 4G. It happens a lot more often on the 3D, than with any other phone.

It happens to me about three or four times a day.

Happens to me occasionally and it also happened on my last phone. Nit biggie

I blame my thumb touching the volume keys - the latter can switch on my phone as well.
Having the phone in my hands, fingers left and thumb right aligned, and pressing down the power button with the index key forces the thumb (or lower base of it) to excert a force on the frame... oops, the volume keys are just placed there... Might be attributed to my big hands, though ;-)
It get's worse when I have a skin around it...
Cheers
Christoph

Mine does this as well, annoying.
locked & loaded

Mine does it the other way around, when i press power to turn the screen on, it comes on and goes off before I can get to slide to unlock the screen.

It's not a software issue, it's a hardware one. It's the power button, it gets mushy. Take the cover off and thoroughly clean it, it should click just once when you press it after that. if not, well, you're out of luck

power button

i just recieved my evo 3d today threw ups. and i noticed my power button is hard to press to turn the screen off... anyone else ran into this problem?
The button is built into the battery cover so remove it and place it back on.

make sure your battery door is completely on and snapped in the correct spots.
i have issues where either the power button is way too easy to press or way too hard. hopefully a new case will solve that.
I had a badly dysfunctional power switch with my first 3VO, I have since exchanged it for a new one.
And, no, in my case it was not the battery cover-power switch interface, it was the switch itself. I removed the cover and directly pressed it. Strange thing was, with mine, if I removed and replaced the battery, I could get one or two presses that registered, otherwise nothing -- no wake/sleep, no power off/on.
My wife and I both have Evo 3d's and her power button is way easier to push than mine. I switched the back covers between the phones and the problem followed the cover. I looked at both and the power button on my cover isn't molded correctly where it pushes on the phone. It is shorter so it sits further in the phone and doesn't work quite right. I called HTC and Sprint and there isn't a replacement cover available yet so they are going to switch out the phone.
I had a power button issue, where if I pushed the button, it would come up with the shutdown menu and no option just turn off the screen. Was in the process of going take it back for a replacement and found that when I removed the case to switch the memory card that my one was working as it should. The hardness went away and the option to turn off the screen came back. Strangest thing I seen since it truly seemed like a hardware issue.
i am going to check a few out in store and see if mine is like what you describe. To me its set pretty low and the button doesnt stick out very far.
Mine sticks out pretty far... isn't easy, or hard to press. I guess i got lucky.
Mine is really touchy, when I press it to lock the phone it sometimes goes to the shutdown popup. Sorry this post wasn't more helpful to the op, lol, just sharing.

WHy does HTC keep putitng the power button on top ?

My Brother was checking out my new 3VO over the weekend, he liked it, and is an iPhone guy. But he does make a good point, he can not stand the stupid placement of the power button to activate the phone on. You have to reach you're finger all the way to the top of the phone, and press down hard to wake up the phone.
He says Apple does it right, you just press the thumb button on the bottom of the phone to wake, and is very fast and simple. I have to agree
A better placement would be just below the volume buttons, or left side, just below the charging port.
Man up. Hit the button.
It's not like you're trying to turn on the phone in a gun fight while reloading... it's not that serious.
I prefer it on the top. My buddy just picked up a Samsung Charge & I noticed it has it on the side.
Short fingers seem to be the problem, not placement of the power button. If he's got short limbs, this should be the least of his problems.

With the button on top I don't have to worry about accidentally turning on the phone when I take it out of my pocket grabbing it from it's sides.

I actually like it on the top. You're less likely to accidently turn it on in your pocket. And the power button on my EVO 3D is really easy to press without pressing down hard.

It was all a matter of patterned behavior.. I had the Evo and switched to Epic. I then had to learn to press it on the side. I switched to Evo 3d and I have to retrain again. Doesn't matter TOO much where the button is, once you retrain yourself for it.
On top is where it belongs. If you want a rinky dink dime sized hard button on the front, you'll have to do what Apple did and waste 40% of the front surface for things other than the display. That's why Apple's displays are the size of a postage stamp: wasted space on the front for things that don't belong there.

This is likely the main reason it's on top. You tend to grip the sides when putting it in your pocket, purse, fanny pack, butthole, etc., and having it on top pretty much eliminates that. Also it's probably morel likely to get bumped awake with the button on the side. I don't think there's really a perfect place for a power button, but I prefer HTC's placement. Now the placement of the charging port on the 3D, I have an issue with.
When I hold the phone in my left hand like usual, my pointer finger can comfortably turn it on... no complaints here---aside from the power button being wobbily, due to the design of the casing.
Doesn't really matter to me, but I liked how it was on the top-right side on the Epic a little better.
The iPhone power button is on the top as well. The home button just acts to wake from sleep. If your iPhone is off, you still need to reach all the way up there to turn it on. It's more about capacitive buttons than anything else.
What I wouldn't mind is if the camera button served to wake on a long press, maybe even launching the camera app directly on a second press.
Sure. you might get some accidental wakes/pictures (which could be entertaining), but there would be some nice functionality with that.
Tell him he needs to hit the gym if he is having a hard time pressing the power button
^ O snap!1
I like the placement of the power button. At least they are consistent with all their devices. The volume button is what gets me but not a big deal. I wont pick at minor things because what would make me happy, may not make others happy.

I like to change things up every so often. You know? Get creative with it...
No, on the top is for the best. I have a Samsung focus too. Tue power button is on the side. I'm always turning the screen back on when I set it down by accidentally hitting the stiff breeze activating button.
This one needs a stronger button too. I fixed that though.

Anywhere other than the top or the screen and it would be pressed on the time on accident. If it were on the screen, it would take up space, and if it were a software button on the screen then the screen would have to stay on and eat your battery.
You are a duche bag original poster. This phone is the too of the line the epic of phones... And you are question the power button... May you not get laid because of your phone

Overly sensitive power button?

Has anyone noticed the power button being extra sensitive? That is to say, on the Hero/Evo, you had to hold the power button for at least 2 seconds before the pop-up Power Options menu would display. On my 3vo, it pops up in less than a second. I'm finding it slightly annoying, because the space between "sleep" and "power options menu" is too narrow.
Not mine....

work on reseating the back shell of the phone, i had the issue too at first and i thought it was a defect, but i played with it a couple times and got it to work like a normal power button
Nope not at all, I actually have to press it more than once sometimes and harder the second time for it to work......
yea mine is a lil sensitive...cant have it my pocket because of it..pulled it out a couple times and the phone bouncing around in my pocket opened apps and almost called ppl
Throw an OtterBox on there....
you have to give it a little lovin- WON"T happen by accident.
Also - saved my3D from a nice 5 foot drop courtesy of some Crazy 3 yr olds on the 4th.
mine is like that and I hate it!!!
U guys have cases on the phone? I guess not

I actually find the new power button a little bit better to my liking, a lot easier to find in a blind poweron. But I do agree that it might be a little too sensitive. I've found that the phone turns itself on while in my pocket - which is a bad thing because on shake the led flashlight turns on lol! Of course that kills the battery...
Also when trying to turn on or off... sometimes i see the turn off, reboot menu pop up which just simply put, never happened with the evo og. And while i like the ease of use and how fast it reacts to turning off/on, it seems to be a bit of a problem ATM
not not at all sensitive. it's actually under sensitive. some time i get frustrated because i have to push it so hard in the exact sweet spot just to get it to turn on. after having it for over a week now it's getting better, but at first i couldn't even get the thing turned on.
Not mine in fact mine is kinda hard to push. I'm going to the Sprint store I bought mine from this weekend to see if I can get it switched out because I have light leaking through the ring that surrounds the search key, and it bugs the hell out of me lol. So I hope my new one is gonna be normal.
This happens to me with or without the case. I did have a very brief time where the power button would not respond at all, and discovered that the back was causing it (I had swapped the OEM 8G card for my 32).
I don't think this is a big enough problem for me to try and swap the phone out, although it is a little annoying. I suppose in time I'll learn not to push the power button too long.
I have the same problem with the sensitive power button but I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S. I'm wondering if there is dust in the way... Anybody ever find a fix or diagnose the problem for this? I've seen the same problem across multiple devices on the forums so I am starting to believe its a wear and tear type of thing.
Mine is kinda sensitive. But not as sensitive as the one I saw at my local sprint store. Interesting how it seems like no two EVOS are the same.
Good thing though is that since the button is built into the backcover... Maybe picking up another one can deliver a more sensitive/stiff experience.

Evo 3D screen is all weird.

Okay, my is being absolutely retarded. When I press the power button 99% of the time the screen won't come on. I have to push the button 20-30 times in order for it to come on sometimes.
The issue is though, I know the power button works because when I press it the home, menu, back and search buttons always light up.
And to make things weirder I can still use the touch screen even though the screen is black. If I love my thumb around I can feel the unlock vibrate :/...
In other words my "screen works" but usually stays black.
Any idea what this is?

Same thing happened with me,i'm just holding the home and the back button after i pressed the unlock button and the screen is working,
try to run an official RUU to restore your evo 100% ,maybe it's help you
Hey I have the exact same problem.. But my is from evo getting contact with water.. Technicaly the screen is on but it just doesn´n show up anything just dark..
Our screens are pretty crappy, my digitizer is broken on mines. I call it the Struggle phone now

Screen question.

So i have been wondering about something, when i press back button for an instance werry light and slow og just increase pressure over time, then it activates touch and goes back, then I can release pressure and press again and it goes back again without removing finger from screen. Does this mean there is like a 3d touch tingy? The screen is super response when I use it as normal so there is no fault here

As long as I understood you correctly, this has nothing to do with 3D-touch or similar technologies. Holding the back button is a shortcut in some ROMS, but it is not in our case. Going back twice is likely caused by you actually pressing the button twice even though it may not feel like it.
