[Q] Can you please show me how to play movies on GTab? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay guys, lets say I want to store my movies on a 32gb USB flash drive, I have the USB attachment for the tab.
Now, exactly how do I convert wmv movies (in the 2.5 GB range, downloaded from Amazon videos) to mp4 or a file that will actually play on the tab?
As in what settings should I use, I have BS Player and Dice Player installed.
Thanks.

You can just try them with bsplayer or dice player, most of them work fine (if they're 720p or lower).
For converting, have a look at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20736368&postcount=18

Are those amazon videos DRM free so that they can actually be converted?

Okay I'll give it a try.
Yes they are DRM, as far as I'm aware. Reading how to get rid of that now.
ETA: Okay I bought downloaded Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate, which pretty much does it all and will remove the DRM.

well i would suggest the video/movie player called mx video player, it will ask to download a armv6 update for the galaxy tab...which u need to do, then it supports tegra 2 hardware accelerated decoding...its great, as for decoding, i use the program any video convertor, in windows

Get moboplayer; it is free and has played every movie I have copied to my tab. It will play mp4, avi, and everything else.

Hey all,
Used Aimersoft and used the pre setting for Ipad 2 to convert. Took about 2 hours for each movie (Fast Five, Thor, Conan) and also removed the DRM. Went from 2.5GB each to about 300-450 MB each. Just copied the mp4 files straight to my movies folder. BSPlayer plays them perfectly in fullscreen mode with no lag or audio sync issues.
Thanks for the help.

[Q] Will the SGS II play MKV, h.264 with subtitles without conversion?

I've been using an iPhone for god knows how long just becuase of Air Video - there are no alternatives for Android. The Galaxy S II is looking absolutely perfect, but there's just one more thing I absolutely must confirm before I make the purchase.
I'm a huge anime watcher. I watch anime on the go all the time. The iPhone 4 uses Air Video and does that perfectly. Since there's no alternative for Android the Galaxy S II must be able to watch it without conversion for me to replace my iPhone with it.
My anime are almost always 720p, MKV encoded with h.264, softsubs. That's generally the industry standard for anime distribution. Will the Galaxy S II play these files without conversion. If it's a yes, then I'm ordering right now.
If someone here actually has one and watches anime, it would be much appreciated if you can download an episode and try it out on your device. Telling me your results would be much appreciated!
The most important thing is framerate, audio and subtitle rendering.
Havent watched anime specifically but tested a x264 encoded blu ray 1080p and that worked fine.
Edit: Have u got a sample that i/we could test?

I can confirm 720p (and 1080p as well most likely) MKV files (yes, anime. Tried it with released from gg, commie, UTW) with .ass/.srt softsubs play perfectly. The more advanced aspects of .ass subs don't work but it's no big deal - Styling, transition effects, etc.
I'm using mVideoPlayer instead of the stock one as the stock can't read .ass softsubs.
If I had this two years ago when i used to go on anime binges it would've been perfect. Didn't like waiting 30 mins for each ep to convert to 480x272 mp4s.
Should play them, make sure the subs file name is the same as the video (up to the file extension obviously). If the subs don't play try converting them to .srt subs and try again!
1920x1080 mkv's play fine, full speed. This is the only phone that's been able to play my 'Bad Apple PV' test mkv at full speed without the video/sound getting out of sync after 20 seconds.
However subtitles did not work in any of the players I tried (default, mobo & rock). Will look for another player later.

These MKV's don't have a separate subs file. They're built into the mkv as a separate data stream.
For those looking for an alternative to Air Video, I've been using Plex. It has a companion program that runs on your comp (just like air video) that converts pretty much any video format to stream to your android device. Only problem is that it's not quite as easy to set up to stream over 3g/4g as air video is. But if you know how to port-forward your router, it's pretty easy from there. Hope this helps some ppl!

Why are you not watching anime anymore? There are so many good things this season.
The S2 can play HD content no problem, it's the media player you should be looking at. If one doesn't read subs in MKV containers then just move on to the next media player and check. Yeah anyway, no problems.
As for why i'm not watching any, i'm too busy. I work/study 50+ hours a week now, I try to squeeze something in during the commutes though.
Enjoy your new beast phone.

Yeah, not sure why I was thinking of external subs. I have some 720p MKVs and their subs, of the kind you mention, do play in the default player for me...
...and to answer a question above: Yes! Seeking within 1080p content works just fine.

Thank you so much. Buying now from handtec.
I have the default player, moboplayer, mvideoplayer, and Rockplayer installed, each will do a little something the others won't. Interesting there is now enough CPU and RAM grunt for software decoding to manage things that were like slideshows on other phones.
whats the largest size file you can put onto the gs2?
tried to copy a 4.4 gb mkv to the phone and says its to large of a file,
do i have to create a partition in a different format?
if so whats the best method?
any help much appreciated.
On the subject of video, has anyone use DLNA to connect to a Twonky server? My G2X would connect but not play video. I'm hoping it's because the G2X couldn't support MKV which is what all me stuff's encoded in. Thx.
I have a 3gb 1080p anime movie I use for testing. Lots of things happening on screen. I dont watch anime at all, but subtitles was included in the movie and displayed fine.
1 was a subtitled Dragon ball z/gt(dont know really) but played fine with subtitles. the other was a soul blade(i think) that played smoothly also.

[Q] HDMI video great! but no sound?

I know a lot of you are thinking this has been addressed before but my problem isn't getting the video to play in entertainment center mode but the audio.....
But the thing is that it will only play sound in video's i recorded with my camera.
What im trying to do is play videos that i have taken from my computer and put them onto my ext sd card.
So like i say the video is just fine but it will not play back with audio.
Oh and they are avi and mpeg formats
Any ideas guys and gals?
The Tegra 2 seems to have crappy video/audio codec support. The samsung processor in the captivate I had previously played everything I could throw at it.
Thankfully, the T2 is powerful enough to do some software decoding. Try using various video players. I find that MoboPlayer can run all my HD videos so far.
Also, just because a file is .Divx, .AVI, .mkv.... doesn't mean that it will play. As far as I know, there are different encoding formats and levels for each codec. The T2 seems to be okay with any basic file, but none of the highly processed files such as movie mkv's.
If you try download another programe in market you would can see
But we can't do the dane for media center....so the better you can do for now is convert your vĂdeo tio an old codec

did you get any feedback??
I've been using Handbrake and the settings from here:
http://www.knowyourcell.com/motorol...d_transfer_them_to_the_motorola_atrix_4g.html
The only difference is that I like to click the "keep aspect ratio" button in handbrake for the resolution. Tweak as you like, but I've found that if you use the constant quality setting, A/V gets out of sync. Biggest bummer is that I have to encode specifically for the Atrix...can't seem to use my "advanced encoded" videos from my media server. I have taken previously encoded 1080p HD movies back though handbrake with the referenced settings to the Atrix and they play beautifully both in MoboPlayer and the Entertainment Center.

Video Files

Ok am rooted and have Android Market. Downloaded Mplayer but I have some movies that the wife wants on the NT (Harry Potter). Most are AVI format as I ripped them from DVD's. Will the NT play those with Mplayer or should I change them to Mp4's.

They should play.
Use mx player it will play avi, xvid, divx, without issue. It supports many other formats as well.
You can either use what the above posters have suggested or change them to mp4.
Thanks guys never tried MXplayer but I will load it up.
I have couple avi video files won't play, and then some will play just fine. I wonder if it's because the resolution isn't right or not.

Resolution shouldn't be an issue the way the avi was encode could be. Are using the stock player because its just ok not great. Try mxplayer its pretty close to great if not great. Some mvk will studder over wifi but other than that it play anything I throw at it.

Ok still having some wierdness. Got MX Player you guys using Hardware or Software modes. I seem to be having issues with it in hardware mode. I re-ripped all the Harry Potter dvd's for the wife and some play and some dont. I ripped them all as MP4 just to be safe.

I have MX player installed, and i could only play about 50% of my avi. I'll probably have to look into the ones that play, and comparing to the ones that don't, and see if something stands out.
>I have MX player installed, and i could only play about 50% of my avi.
AVI is a container format that has been hacked to contain streams that it was never designed to contain. Better PC players can accommodate the hacks, but the Android ones can't.
Fix: Install MKVToolnix. Drop in the AVI, click Start Muxing. 10 secs later, you get an MKV that works.

Best app for HD Video - DicePlayer (IMHO)

DicePlayer works great on the Prime. MKVs are super smooth!

this player is perfect, nothing I have used can come close to matching its performance. 8 gig high profile 1080p movies play flawlessly with no lag at all skipping to any point in the movie. very cool
played 11gig movie from mxplayer over DLNA still smooth
I was trying to play some 1080p stuff on my prime and it was lagging and eventually just quit. It was a x264 mkv file with ac3 codex for sound). When I try to play it in mx player, so it's smooth with h/with acceleration but has no sound. The I tried running it on my pc and it worked fine.

I just hooked the USB cable up to my computer and navigated to the internal memory and dropped the file into the "Movies" folder. it took almost an hour to transfer it.

Just use ES File Explorer on the LAN tab create entries for your samba shares, navigate to your media collection and when you tap to play the movie you can choose which player to launch it with. Works great with DicePlayer.

Did you copy it to internal memory or an SD card? If to an SD card how is it formatted? You may need to format the SD card as NTFS to properly support large file sizes on the Prime.

There, both Dice and MX has an advantage that they have multiple settings for the subtitle.

That's a good idea, and I will probably go with that - however at the moment I'm wanting to show off the features of my new phone to work colleagues, and popup play (although it's a gimmick) seems to impress! So I want to use the standard built in video player for that reason
Any suggestions? Is it even possible to combins .mkv & .srt into one file? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to audiovisual stuff :-D

I tried using that and it seemed to be doing the job ok - (using the associated program MKVExtractGUI) it allows you to select the elements of video/sound/subs you want.
However the H264 file it spat out at the end won't play properly in VLC on my computer - it's jerky, jumping up and down from about 8 frames per second to 25fps and back again, lots of artifacts, and no sound or subtitles (despite me selecting those elements to be included).
If it barely plays in VLC on my laptop I doubt it's going to play on my phone...
Any more ideas?
Have you tried using the stock video player? It plays MKVs and subtitles out the box.
I tried that, that would be ideal - but it didn't play the mkv files i gave it. I'll try a couple of others and report back...
Ok well I've just found the first chink in this phone's armour:
It's very fussy about the .mkv files it will play.
It outright refuses some. Others it will play the video but no audio. Some it will play perfectly, unless you try and activate subtitles under the settings menu, in which case it craps out, freezes, and gives me a "this video cannot be played message." Even if I do manage to get it to play subtitles along with the video and audio, it's well out of sync - like minutes out of sync....

Well if you do have to end up re-encoding your videos, try out Format Factory. It's free and has a ton of options.
I would suggest using MP4 and 'burning in' the subtitles. If you can't understand the the language you might as well have them a part of the video.
Thanks, I'll give that a try
