Recently my phone has just been restarting itself allot and it is getting very annoying. The phone would just be sitting beside me and the next thing I see is the Samsung boot screen. It never restarts when I'm using the phone. Just when it's standing by.
I was thinking an emergency firmware recovery through Samsung kies might work. But I'm afraid of losing my apps. If I do this will the apps be removed or will they be there just as usual?
Current android version that i have is gingerbread 2.3.3
Thanks for any help or advice in advance
For me i would back up all my app to the computer (music, videos, pics, apps etc.) and then update.

i doubt there would be firmware recovery available from kies [who uses kies this days].. as your last firmware installation was total there wont be recovery....
if you choose to root [your choice]... you can backup your apps and then try to do anything.... if you just need to backup apks then use AppMonster.. this will just backup apks not whole data with them
try to flash stock firmware with odin again
This hasnt been brought up recently since a lot of the active users here uses CM7 nowadays, so I'm guess that this is simply SOD(sleep of death) caused by wifi.
You might resolve this by turning off the wifi when ure not using it.
When I turn WiFi off, it still restarts itself, all the time

Last time I tried odin, I bricked the phone, I don't really want to try that again.
If there is a full step by step guide to flash cyanogen mod for the ace with odin, I'll give it a try

Solved with cyanogenmod
I gave cyanogenmod 7.2 a go on my ace.
So far no problems! I will post if I come across any sort of restart. But so far it's great.
Thanks for all the replies you guys, I really appreciate your help!!
Phone restarting with cyanogen mod
I flashed cyanogen mod on my phone and there were no problems until last week. The phone hasn't been restarting just not waking up. Then I have to pull the battery out to get it to go again. My phone can't go 24 hours without we having to restart it once or twice .
Is there any way to fix this. Thanks

thanks for your suggestion but I've already tried reflashing it. through Odin and clockwork recovery. Both giving the same result.
I am following the instructions to flash exactly but still restarts.
sorry for your problem man, but i didn't face such problem.. i'm flash and using almost all of custom ROMs available from various devs.. use them at least a week and its nice..
try flashing it again using cwm 5, may be it will solve your prob.. currently i'm using nims11 infinity v2..
CWM5
Where do you get cwm for galaxy ace. I have version 4 and that might be causing problems with the updated cyanogenmod.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions!
Is the installation just the same as other versions?
boot in recovery mode and install update from sd?
If I can get cwm 5 from somewhere, I'll give it a go!
If I have cyanogenmod already installed with cwm 4 can I install cwm 5 and not worry about it, or will I need to reflash cyanogen again?
try flashing cwm 5, n then, flash cm7 again..

You flashed cm7.2 with cwm4??Flash cwm5 and then try a reflash of cm7
I've flashed cwm5 then wiped the phone using it then I flashed cyanogenmod, (the one from the xda forums at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263292 )
There was no problems, I restored all my apps using titanium backup. Then just a few minutes before this post I came to my phone and it wouldn't light up. (Sleep of death I think you call it?) I had to pull the battery out to get it to go again.
It was plugged into the charger at the time
Bluetooth was on
Wifi was off
Mobile internet was on
Before I locked the screen it was syncing gmail. (This probably isn't a problem)
I have the 'all apps movable to sd card' thing checked in cyanogenmod settings to.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Chris.

What files did you use in Odin, only pda or all four? (cooper, csc, modem...)
it's one pack installation, GT-S5830_XEN_S5830XWKS2_S5830XENKS1_S5830XWKS2, Netherland Stock 2.3.5. Finally I install it, but now I have unexpected restarts, turn off etc. Can I fix this with odin with earlier version or something (anything) similar? History of updates: Stock 2.2.1. then 2.3.3 also stock, then cyanogen mod 7.1 rc1 (worked properly first time, but I uninstalled that, it was only for see benefits of CM ROM) and finally i flash again 2.3.5. and (yes, i'm fool) again CM7 RC1 and then started my problems, restarting etc. and when I try to flash 2.3.5. stock then happened problem with Odin.
You need to flash a full package file , not one package because one package will not convert your file system back to rfs , which will cause bootloops

OK, thanks. I'm now on offical 2.3.3. for my service provider- Telenor. Sometimes phone still turn off, or restarting. Is there chance that the phone was defective when it was purchased, a month ago? when I bought it, just seven days after that I wore it to a service provider because the often rebooted and then it was on version 2.2.1. They returned it to me with version 2.3.3. and told me that it happens because I have some time to full battery. Although I empty the battery to 0% and then filled to 100%, problems were again resumed. Since I have over Odin and FUS downloader downloaded new version 2.3.3. whether the service can see that I changed the software in the meantime?
that sudden reboot is called sod, shortform for sleep of death. it occur when u connecting with known wifi ap, then u go out of range and the device try to reconnect. try to set ur wifi sleep policy to "never" and only turn the wifi on only when u need to use it. btw i managed to solve my sod problem using wififixer. search for it in market, its a free app.
if ur not even connected to wifi, then just ignore my post.
Sometimes this happens when WiFi is on, but can also happen when it is not turned on. Today, for example, when I sync contacts from social networks through HSDPA network, phone restarts, even he would not get involved until I took out the battery
Hi I have a Samsung Galaxy S2. Android v4.0.4 LQ7
I am a noob so sorry if my question is stupid.
I have rooted using method 1 in that thread and it worked great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
Then I downloaded the app ROM Manager and downloaded CM9 RC2 since it appeared to be a stable.
I used ROM manager to download the file cm-9.0.0-RC2-galaxys2.zip
Once downloaded I saved that file in the external SD Card and used ROM Manager to reboot in recovery mode and install the ROM.
The installation progress fine and complete. I then reboot my phone.
When rebooting the phone displays the Samsung galaxy S2 screen and then switched to Cyanogen (mod) 9 screen. From there nothing happens. The phone won't boot. I tried to removed the battery which is the only way to turn the phone off and reboot in recovery and reinstall the file but the same thing happens.
Please help!
You've probably installed wrong zip for your device/variation.
Specifically which GS2 have you got?
Did you wipe date/factory reset?
Try wiping before and after flashing?
Get the CM9 nightly and flash that instead or try flashing Siyah kernel over the one that is on your device now. I personally use Goo Manager from market as you can download/update/notifications and browse compatible roms via that.

If you do a wipe/reset it will clean all your installed apps/app data and restore settings to clean install.
Its advisable to do this whenever you are flashing a different rom. Its easy to backup and then restore all your apps automatically and silently (without intervention) in a few clicks after installing new rom with titanium backup (pro).
Reboot into recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Install CM9 Nightly from internal or external card.
Install latest CM9 gapps
Reboot system.

Thanks. for that. Do you guys know of a shortcut button to turn the mobile data on or off, like the power button does on ICS?
Also I would like to raise an issue with the ROM Manager App. I cannot do a backup of my current ROM. Every time I try to do so the App freezes. It did the same when I first rooted my phone and I was on the Stock ROM I was unable to do a backup then.
Is this something that happen often with Rom manager?

Don't use ROM Manager, due to its incompatibility with most kernels and the S2.
Here's what to do about the short cut for mobile data:
Options –> System –> Notification Drawer –> Widget Buttons –> Toggle Mobile Data
It'll be there at the top when you pull down the drawer, if it's not immediately visible just slide the icons to the side and you'll see it.

You always do backups in recovery mode, Rom Manager (if compatible kernel) simply automates teh process of rebooting into recovery and starting backup.
Depending on your rom/version you can do this via power menu anyway (reboot into recovery).
STOP USING ROM MANAGER!
It can & most likely will fuc& your fone up. If u want to learn I suggest u read all of chainfires posts, then check out the SGSII Bible in the GS2 section. Then get urself the correct tar file for the Cf root kernel specific to ur country or region. That will get u outta the ****e if this ever happens again. Read up on all things root etc. u could do with learning what Odin is too!

Thanks for that. I think I know what Odin is. Thank you so much for that post. You have opened a whole new world! I have opened the SG2 bible I wish I have done that before. I am about to do a back up now. but I have not been able to do a back up of my original stock ROM since I was trying to do it with ROM Manager and it would freeze all the time. I think it is the worse that I could have done I have changed my ROM and didn't not do a back up before. i guess I will never be able to revert back to my stock ROM. Thanks again for you precious advises they have been very helpful!
Naa m8, u can always go back to a stock, u just need to tell me your country & the modem & ROM version, mine was stock Uk 4.0.3 & once you have that you can flash it with Odin then flash the Cf root kernel. you would then be on a totally stock ICS ROM but with root & CWM recovery so you can then flash anything you like. If you give me the country & which ROM (ICS or GB) you would like I can give you the necessary files for Odin.
Do not, I repeat DO NOT flash a stock ROM & stock unrooted kernel as if u do a full wipe it will hardbrick ur fone!
Sent from My Omega powered beast, using Xparent ICS
There's an even easier way....
Go here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608071
then simply download the stock unbranded firmware for your country. it doesn't have to be your specific country but it helps as it has the csc etc that you need. Once you have downloaded it simply flash it with Odin & you will be running stock ICS 4.0.3 but with root so you can then flash CM9, but seriously I would highly recommended Omega v15. It's close to stock but sooooo much more. Im in all day if u need help

In that case you will need to flash an appropriate modem file for your device or possibly check APN details.
You can get modem via dev section (use search) and APN settings from your carrier or google.
Hi
I searched and only found similar cases with other phones and no solution.
I was on stock 4.0.3 with CWM, rooted and siyah kernel and tried to upgrade to CM9
with Rom manager
i dled cm9 with gapps and let ROM Manager do the backup, wipe and reboot to recovery
but then i just saw the first GT 9100i boot screen with the triangle and after that
the screen stayed black.
i noticed in a darker area that the screen blinked everey few seconds, so i guess its trying to reboot all the time. some kind of bootloop?
i cant access the cwm, nor boot normaly.
just the download mode is working
so i tried to flash a stock FW from intratechs thread via odin
but... FAIL
help would be much appreciated right know :crying:
thank you
Mmm I've had issues with rom manager before but never this severe. All I can suggest is what I would do which is to fash stock firmware from samfirmware via PDA section in odin. If this doesn't work I think there is a sticky thread which is dedicated to situations like this. It requires flashing a firmware via odin again but all partitions are used so it will wipe your device. All the best.

I've never pulled battery and haven't ever had issues installing recoveries through Odin. But it wouldn't hurt trying. Out of curiosity, what exactly does it say at the top when you boot into recovery?
Edit: just remembered that if you upgraded to ICS through via OTA, the system reverts back to stock recovery due to code that is imbedded in the ota version of the update. But this code does not exist in the update provided through Kies (what i used). This explains my not needing to do a battery pull during reboot.

As I stated "I just remembered". Confirming your post. So nothing new learned for me lol. It's why I explained why a battery pull may be necessary IF the update was through OTA. If he went through kies, its due to some other reasons. Always best not to make assumptions that's why I asked the questions I did.

On the top it says "android system recovery" with no options to flash files or do a backup or anything, which means its the stock one.

As I stated "I just remembered". Confirming your post. So nothing new learned for me lol. It's why I explained why a battery pull may be necessary IF the update was through OTA. If he went through kies, its due to some other reasons. Always best not to make assumptions that's why I asked the questions I did.
Hope y'all have a great Christmas!

Try it. If it works, great. If not, its only a couple seconds waisted. Worth a shot

Go back to stock, see if it still happens while you are there. If so, return it and ask for a new one. If it doesn't, flash CM again and read the CM thread; you just might find a fix for that issue.

What ROM do you use?
Settings->about phone->build number should give you the ROM name and the firmware it's based on.

Just click restore. You don't have to delete anything first because it will be deleted/replaced by the restored rom
