I haven't updated my phone in a few months (still on Cognition 777 r1). I have two questions:
1. Why is the thread locked?
2. What's the best ROM to move on to?
Thanks

There is no best rom .
Find one you understand the instructions to and try .

I meant which is the best in other people's opinions...
There are too many ROMs to trawl through at the moment so I was hoping for a simple pros and cons of the ROMs others had used since Cognition

Simple if you want to know which ones are the best ones just look at the first few in the original development. Then take your pic.
Hyperdroid seems to be popular and also Checkrom. VillainRom is also a good stable rom. Those are the 3 i would suggest.
In android development try the one by Neophyte..Tried it for a few hours yesterday and its pretty fast and slick....But anyway if you are moving from Cognition and want something similar Hyperdroid it is
Alternative is to search Best Rom .
Simple pro stock is best if you are unable to understand their is no best rom .
Post will get locked soon anyway .

which of the Roms are the best? most stable? fastest etc?.
maybe someone can start a poll? like there was on the SGS forum.
maybe there is one and i just havent found it.
How to Root:

Just follow the steps!! its even in the Sticky!! Always read the Sticky in the Forum!! Something are always Important when they are STICKY!!
Hope this help!!
And why not S2 Root
@ekoandrew
While I'm pondering how to go about rooting my GSII, I'm curious to know why you choose Chainfire's method over lyriquidperfection's S2 Root v1.2. To me the latter surely involves fewer steps / appear simpler.

Actually, Chainfire's method uses less steps, and up to the point where the lyriquidperfection version goes off on a different route, they're exactly the same!
For the majority Chainfires method just works and is updated as kernels are released .
Best rom no such animal other wise we would only have one custom rom .

The best ROM is the one that comes closest to meeting all your requirements. The chefs who make the ROMs built it to suit their prefernces (some like close to stock while outhers prefer stripped down to the basics). It is up to you to choose which one you like best
If you read through each ROM thread you will find out how fast, how stable and how many problems are with it.
As for a poll, well that would only be valid if everyone who voted had tried every ROM on the poll for at least a week. Normally beginners will flash the ROM with the biggest threat to start with (as most of the problems will have been sorted) and they'll be so impressed compared to the stock or especially the branded ROM that they stick with that.
i would still like to see a poll.. would give me a push towards the rom i could use.
i used darkys 9.5 on my sgs and i must say, the phone was never better.
cant say i had any bugs that i noticed.
so the poll would push me to maybe the two "best" ones and i could read about them and than choose.
now there are so many and to many pages to read. im a busy man. =)
maybe you guys could say your favorites here.
There are a number of posts best rom and some are even with a poll .
But as you are to busy guess you wont bother to look for them or read them .
Best stick with stock .

Hi all,
I have rooted my device according to the following method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
My phone specs are as follows: Stock Rom.
PDA:KJ2/ PHONE:KI4/ CSC:KJ1 (XSG)
Now that I have rooted my device, I would like some help what to do next for optimum performance and to remove the bloatware? I am very new to android world. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
trawl the rom threads see what you like the look of, im not saying this just becausei use it, but take a look at the litenin rom thread in my sig, thats simple to flash and plenty of instructions, i have found most roms are are based on nothing much being changed unless you go for miui or a cm7 rom,
if you wanna remove bloatware i personally set my phone up n use system app remover, everyone has there own personal choice for roms so its basically take a look at the thread if u like the look of it give it a shot,
there is plenty of help and advice in the stickys and the rom threads if you get stuck.

Thanks a lot Demon_man for the reply. I have noted few things in lightening ROM which need clarification.
1) It is based on 2.3.4 while mine is 2.3.5...should I go back?
2) It doesn't support Right to left languages..They say to install older versions.
3) what is the battery life with lightening ROM?
I shall be thankful for further help.
sorry thought i had updated my sig litnin is now un supported as far as im aware the dev left but this thread has taken over the litnin rom,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334124
RtoL languages i wouldnt no sorry not without asking or going through the whole details.
battery life is excellent simple as
and the link i just gave like i said is the litning rom updated

Best rom posts are banned here .
Read the rom descriptions in the rom posts .
jje
Are you talking about touchwiz launcher or the complete touchwiz UI by Samsung?
Like jje says best Rom is not a post anyone wants to see again. Especially since you could search and find a whole bunch of existing threads the same.
If you want to find your answer just spend some time flashing yourself.
Make a backup in CWM then go for it. If you don't like something restore and try another till you find what you like.
Everyone has a different opinion so your which Rom question is rubbish. Only you can be the judge.
Anyway flashing a new Rom and exploring what's on offer is like getting a new phone. Have some fun doing it.

hey have any of you guys installed a custom roms on the SGS2 i have the phone rooted and i was contimplating installing a custom rom just wanted you guys information on how safe it is to do so. I was acutally looking for a nice ICS custom rom but apparently i would need one for my kernel(XWKL1). What would happen if i install a custom rom of ICS ment for a different kernel would it brick my phone?
thanks in advance for any information.

probably but you are better off reading and learning before bricking your phone
ICS is yet to be released but we do have a buggy leaked ICS test rom you need to know how to recover before flashing .

Yes it is safe if you know what you're doing and for you that means don't go anywhere near an ICS ROM try a Gingerbread ROM first but before you do that read and read and search and search.
Just practising my speed typing....
wow thanks for such a quick reply so for example if i were to install the Omega rom i would need to get one for my kernel version only right? Then if would need to revert all i need to do is flash my old insecure kernel back and i would be back.
edit: - i didnt see B3311 post. ok i am a lil confused now if i were to install a custom rom ment for a differnt kernel would it work or would i brick my phone?
Kernel version doesen't matter.

Search, Read, Backup and try. Everything you need to know is in the threads. Please read friend that is the only way you get to learn. Look at me. Been reading upon the threads once i had my galaxy s2 just before xmas and i have read upon two months before i got my phone. Now even though i only joined recently i know near enough what i need to do regarding as rooting and flashing roms and themes go. But i still search whenever i can for what i need before i have to ask questions. And most of the time it is right there infront of you. Also another thing if you think the search engine is crap on xda use google. Most of the times it gives you what you are looking for.
Not having a go but today mininum have been two three threads what rom is the best and what one to use and so on. Anyway good luck with the flashing and hope you enjoy whatever you choose

And the key to all the reading is that you are less likely to brick your phone more likely to be able to recover from problems.

True but even with all the reading at least you will feel more comfortable about going about and rooting the phone and flashing a rom. That way at least you do not have to expect others to spoonfeed the information to you. Also when you flash a rom for the first time you will feel great about yourself cause you did it all by yourself than asking others to help you. Hope that makes sense.. and to what you said also you have a great point and i always read your posts when you help people JJe as you are one helpful guy.
Hey, I just contacted Google and advised them to remove the Google search widget that comes standard on every android phone's home screen.
It useless I told them, nobody seems to even notice or use it. Heck, why search when you can just ask?
Still waiting for there reply.

to be clear i never asked which rom was the best and which one to use. I have been reading up on all the different roms available i have narrowed it down to the ICS and the Omega rom and i know how to flash the roms the instructions there are quite clear my only query was about the kernel version for which i could not find a solution. Now i have another question since you guys are saying the kernel version does not matter then why are they country specific and suppose i use a kernel ment for USA would that mean when ics finally got released here for the sgs2 i would need to reflash my phone with the gingerbread 2.3.6 version before i could get the official ICS update from kies?

let me make this clear. Different variants of the s2 hence why you see different forums. If you have an international version then you are safe to flash whatever you want in this forum here. So if you see USA version I would steer clear it as it has nothing to do with the international version if that makes sense. Regarding your other question well yes flash BBL to stock official ROM and that is it

The kernal is not related to country or carrier. The csc is.
Practically all custom roms come with working kernals and modems for the rom.
As for getting the official upgrade, you can reflash your original firmware, but most here just download the new official firmwares from the Intratech thread or sites like sammobile and flash it with Odin. No need for kies. I don't use it at all except for when I first got the S1 in 2010.

ok i finally installed .Illusion-xT v1.7.2 - XWKL1 2.3.6 from
Code:

and also i like touchwiz so i installed the touchwiz apk mentioned below in the same thread i have an app called AppZorter which basically just sorts the apps in the application menu but when i try to do it i get an error that "No suitable Version of TouchWiz was found on your device". I searched the forum and found an updated touchwiz
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061883
now can i directly install this version or will it affect the illusion rom?
Best asking on the illusion thread.

hi guy,
which custom rom can save more battery?
There's no such thing because you use your phone differently to everyone else, have it setup differently, and no two phones come out of the factory exactly the same component-wise. A rom which gives me good battery life might not give you good battery life. And another thing, kernels tend to have a much greater effect on battery life than roms (unless it's a really badly put together rom). But again with kernels, you won't have the same experience as me with a given kernel for the above reasons.
And given how easy it is to flash roms/kernels & backup/restore in CWRecovery, there's no excuse for you trying out a bunch of roms/kernels till you find one that works well for you.
This thread will be closed within a few hrs.

Stay with stock rom until you understand more and have actually read the faqs and guides .
You know when you understand more thats the point in time where you do not post repetitive questions .
