This phone is a beast...definity meets my needs! - Motorola Photon 4G

I know that there are probably other threads just like mine but I just had to get this off my chest.....for everyone that's disrespecting this phone and saying its a slouch, slow etc.
Some of you may know me from selling/trading phones over in the marketplace. I've had every high end phone on Sprint, some phones I've owned twice or even three times. Nevertheless, I got rid of them because I just didn't like the phone or wanted something else.
Well, I got me another Photon and I come to find that I really like this phone. True it has some issues that's in my opinion is very minor. Those issues consist of the small amount of laginess when unlocking the phone and for some reason when ever I'm typing the vibration of the key press just stops. Then it starts back after I stop typing again...I don't know what's up with that...but those are the only two issues I have with this phone.
Now as far as the good, the reception is out of this world. I get excellent service and bars where I got no or little service on both my NS4G and E4GT. The only phone that came close is my iP4s. I went to the mall here where I live and while the wife and kids were doing some shopping, I decided to pull out the Photon and surf the web. I was expecting that the data would be slow to non existence. But to my surprise, data was working and fast too. Again, this wouldn't have never happened on my NS4G or ET4G. The speaker on the photon is a beast as well. It definitely blows the NS4G out of the water. The E4GT has a good speaker too but begins to crackle at a certain volume.
Not to mention all the accessories that's available for the photo. I'm currently in the market for lap dock
If I'm just blabbing, I apologize. I'm just giving this device some love. I'm already talking my co-worker into getting an Electrify on US Cellular.

babble all you want, your basically just repeating what I have been saying since August!!

I have my gripes with the touch screen, but this is the best PHONE on Sprint. Best reception and sound quality that money can buy.

I'm glad I switched back to Android from the iPoop.

Yeah you're definitely all over the marketplace thats for sure lol. I never thought you'd be back to the photon. I too have used all of sprint's phones except the iPhone and Photon imo is the best Android device they've had so far. Honestly, I believe EVERY problem with device lies within the software I.e blur etc. Hardware is flawless ...
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk

I agree on all counts as well. The phone is awesome. And also agree that if Moto unlocked the bootloader without losing 4G then we can get rid of the blur stuff and really have a outstanding phone.
I'm loving my accessories.

is the better...
is the better phone 4.3" , tegra 2 , is good combination. the pentile screen battery life save. i love the photon.

Thinking about selling my iPhone and getting the Atrix. Is the Atrix rock solid??

I have been kicking around getting the Atrix as my first Android cause I love my friends HTC Incredible so much but I am on AT&T so the Atrix looks like a good one to me, but I am just wondering if this phone has any bugs that need to be worked out as far as software or hardware goes? Thanks
The bugs on the ATRIX is due to MOTOBLUR. You can set the ATRIX free if you root and unlock it

My experience with the Atrix.
I've had the phone for 3 days. Overall it's an amazing device. However, since I've had it the main issue has been reboots&crashes(my phone is not rooted). The funny thing is when I'm using it, it has never rebooted or crashed, but when it's idle it tends to crash frequently(about 10 times per day). As of now, I'm still trying to figure out what's causing this. So far from what I've found on a few android forums suggests that the problem only exists on some devices. There are some Atrix phones that don't have the rebooting problem at all.

Oh, okay so it's kind of like a Volkswagen where one is great and the other is junk? Ha ha just playin. But I take it that this is not really a common problem with this phone but you just got unlucky, and maybe another handful of people?
Or maybe like Mr flo said up above that it's all because of Motoblur?
Imo wait till October or November. There will be a whole new line up of phones coming out. The Atrix is epic but there will be better in the new future.

forget trying to figure out whats wrong and exchange it for another if you can, thats something in the hardware most likely
Overall it's a solid phone, and almost every iPhone user that made the changeover usually posts that they are happy they left the iPhone for the Atrix.
In the end you are getting a dual-core phone with a 1GB of RAM and a large battery.
Plus this phone just got the BL unlocked, so that means you will have CM7 and Ice Cream Sandwich in some form (possibly even official)...

The ATRIX is future proof....these current and upcoming dual-core phones have only matched the ATRIX. I have a custom rom and kernel....and my ATRIX flies

"future proof" makes me happy I just realized that I just made 10 posts! Ha ha!! I'm FREE!! Now it's time for me to go into the DEVELOPMENT THREAD and cause some real trouble, ha ha.
i have had mine for about 3 days, no reboots and whatnot. I am liking the way the phone feels and works. calls are clear via bluetooth speakerphone and the regular earpiece.
ive ditched the default messaging app for chomp sms(its basically bitesms but better and smoother in alot of ways, same dev team if im not mistaken). and im not using the default launcher anymore, launcher pro seems smoother.
anyway hardwarewise the phone is awesome, even with the motoblur on it in a nonrooted oem rom. with that said i plan to root and try out some different roms in the near future

This is my first android phone and I love it! I've already rooted and unlocked it. I've flashed several ROM's already and have had excellent results. There have been a few reboots and connection issues but nothing to seriously complain about. My current ROM has taken care of all that and I'm getting over 30 hours of battery life without changing anything. I don't know about "future proof" with LTE coming but it will be tough to find a better phone
I have 2 in my household.
The wife's is as stock as stock can be and it is rock solid. Never had an issue with the phone. No force closes, no issues, just a solid work beast. Nearly, only nearly mind, rivals a Berry for battery life.
Mine on the other hand has gone through the wars a bit as regards reliability BUT all of those issues were my fault not the phone.
I am like most of those posting here in that I do like to play and tinker with ROMs, apps and anything else we can think of playing with. The upside is that after that learning curve I have a phone that is fantastically quick, great battery life and not really going to be left wanting for much over the next year or two as regards hardware.
Same as most android's really it is what you make of it. If you want a solid work beast, it can do that. If you want to play, you can do that.
Importantly though is that the initial learning curve has been gone through, mostly on this great forum, so if you want to root, mod, unlock the bootloader and whatever else may come make sure you research it.
There is only one rule really. If you unlock the bootloader and use the official AT&T Gingerbread update NEVER go back to Froyo. Remember that and now it is quite hard to mess up.
I know I have tried !
Wow, thanks a lot guys... I think this will be my first Android after reading what you all have said about this phone. Thanks for taking the time to give me your opinions, and to the guy that hates the phone... Dude I'm really sorry you got a dud.

Alright, so this phone needs some serious consideration. Of Course, this phone probably didn't fly as much as it was promoted, I still guess its promotion was a little weaker than I expected.
I have been using Atrix since its launch. About 8 months and never had any issues with my phone.
Phone durability - Rock Solid, even though you can feel the plastic all around, but the phone is light in weight, and it still is very sturdy. Have dropped it a few times(Of course with a cover on top - so no scratches) but even after those many drops, phone is absolutely fine.
Screen - First qHD display. Truly amazing. I feel it better than iPhone's retina display, trust me when I say it, have used iphone 4 and exchanged it with Atrix.
Call Quality - SubPar. No noise issues. Whenever I receive a call, the person on the other end never complained.
Speakers - Loud and clear enough. Even when I put phone on speaker while driving, it is just clear. Loud enough to fill my car with voice easily.
Biggest Bonus - Unlocked Bootloader. Means, this phone is now free. With lots of Devs now coming up with new ROM's, and CM7 on its way, I have heard that MiUI is also coming to Atrix in near future, it is just an amazing feeling that how much customization is available for the phone, with Devs spending days and hours, it is just truly phenomenal.
Processor - with Dual Core 1GHz processor, this phone has got the raw power to beat up the competition. I feel, phone is fast enough to give solid competition to the upcoming new android variations, upcoming iphone and so on. As someone earlier said, it is a future proof phone, not only because it has got the Dual Core processor, but because it has got Dual Core processor, even today, there are many phones which still get released with 1GHz Single Core, I think for next couple of years 1GHz Dual Core processing speed is safe from getting extinct. Also, the fact that Atrix can now be OverClocked to 1.3GHz, man you should see this phone, just totally flying with that much power.
Camera - As promised by Motorola earlier at the time of launch, with GingerBread, phone will be able to do 1080p, and yes it does it. What else would we need?
Another Bonus - Finger Print Scanner. Just unique by itself. No more words needed to explain what it is.
Last but not Least, Battery - Solid. Usually, I have always seen people be able to get around atleast a day out of the Atrix battery easily. Now with different applications available to help us save the battery, it is even easier to get more out of it.
Webtop Dock etc... - Personally I don't use any other accessories for Atrix, so no idea, but have heard they all are also similarly amazing.
If I missed out on anything, I am pretty sure, I have got something good to say about it, as long as it is related to (M)Atrix.
If you got the phone, you should be happy. If you are thinking of getting one, go for it. If you dislike it, it is your personal choice and I am sure people will respect it.
Cheers!!!
Well Guy's!! I took your suggestion (besides that one guy) and I got the Atrix! Thank you thank you!!! I love this phone already. I have the bootloader unlocked, rooted, clockwork recovery, and the Alien ROM installed. Awesome phone, thanks so much for you help. After having the iPhone and then switching to this phone, there are so many things and so many ways to customize this phone it's insane. I almost don't know where to begin. See ya out on the forums!
I wouldn't have gone with the atrix personally. I had one. Froze a lot, soft rebooted A LOT, screen was not accurate to touch and would become unresponsive at times, not to mention it was SLOW(for being a dual core tegra phone). Like others say though, its mostly personal preference. I may have also had a bad one. I've owned many androids and I personally rate the atrix worse than a poopy aria.... its on the bottom of my list. I got my nexus s now and have never been more pleased.

[Q] Taking it back??

Who's taking the Photon back when the GSII comes in a week? Im taking it back because there are too many dumb things happening with this phone, the reboots and such. Plus there isn't too much going on with the Dev side either.
Why do people keep spamming the board with threads that already exist... I just don't understand.
And for the record, i've had my Mopho rooted and unlocked since the first week with yayrom installed (ive owned it for a little over a month). I havn't had any problems... The same can be said for countless other. The dev community is fine. You dont need countless bugged roms, just a few quality ones from quality developers. We have that. Adopt patience, it's a virtue. And well, if you dont have any, have fun with your sg2. We could use less user spam anyway.

I was thinking about it but after taking a look at the Samsung infuse at an att store I changed my mind. 800 x 460 screen resolution on a 4.54 inch screen is fail.
I agree with i made a video discussing the build quality samsung makes all there phone plastic that feels really cheap. I had the infuse and charge and it feels real cheap motorola just on build quality is amazing prime example test out the epic 4g and then a droid 3 its a major difference. The photon is a beast and people just go along with reviews from people like phonedog that test out phones and there not actual using them as there personal phone. The epic touch is basically a infuse with a few changes the photon is so different and i agree i would rather have a couple stable roms then a bunch of unstable ones my take it from me because i would listen to those people and go out and buy phone after phone listen to them talking about this is the best when it wasnt. Now i know whats good and whats garbage. On the photon really all u need is it rooted changed to launcher pro and setcpu and its amazing

The CDMA radio in the Photon is reason enough to hang on to it, i can make phone calls in places i never could before with my Evo 4G and my Evo Shift.
The other day my phone was sitting side by side with a Verizon Thunderbolt, the T-bolt didn't have service and my Photon was roaming on Verizon with 3 bars.
I also get full service at work (on sprints network) where i only had one to two bars with my Evo.
Wanna hear something funny. The radios on this device rock for me. I was in a hospital waiting room the other day while a family member was having surgery and I had to provide a wifi hotspot for my brother and my uncle who were using T-Mobile and AT&T. Ain't that the ****!

That's kinda funny.

Epic Touch vs. Photon

Last night my wife got an Epic Touch. Nice phone. But I can confirm what people have been saying about the radios. The reception on the Photon was consistently 6 to 8 dB stronger on the Photon. I downloaded the same app with both and the Photon 40 percent faster. Both phones were in the same place. Also, there are a couple of "no Sprint zones " where I'd always drop calls with my old Epic. The Photon always holds the call in that area. I know people have claimed many times that the Photon radios are better and here is a real world test that proves it. Im glad I stayed with the Photon.

you gotta love it when you can use a phone as a phone and make and hold calls.
I was very seriously considering swapping my photon for the ET4G... i mean REALLY considering it.. I loved the Epic.. it would only stand to reason that it successor would be just as bad ass right ??
Then i remember the GPS problems, the bluetooth headaches, the lack of support/updates (from samsung/sprint).. it took lots of modding and just the right ROM to make the phone a pleasure to use.. IThen I grabbed my photon and realized how good I really have it.
This thing just works. I installed SPB shell 3D, rooted it and am loving the experience. Can't wait for CM7.. that'll make the experience w/ the photon INCREDIBLE..

The photon for its radio, build quality, and speakers. Both phones are great and you can't go wrong with which ever one you pick. ^^ Sprint to me is the top dog right now with high end 4g phones. Lets just hope they improve their network this coming October.

I enjoy my Photon way more than my Epic, I just think Motorola's framework is a lot more cleaner than Samsung's. One of the things that annoyed me the most about the Epic is I couldnt disable the sound of when their is a network drop/reconnect. So I would constantly hear it while listening to music going in and out of subways. With the Photon, it's just silent and there is audio interruption going on.
Also, the little things like the orientation animation is nice. Samsung's screens are of course great, but I'm glad I have a higher res screen on the Photon. The icons on the Epic Touch look huge with the lower res, but that of course is a personal preference thing. Also not having my phone be a useless brick that can only use wifi when traveling internationally is great, the world phone option is a huge plus for me.

Have had both and like the Epic Touch way better. For one thing I can hear someone when a call comes in. While the Photon had very strong signals and great sound, even with the MR it still suffered from software issues. I know everyone said to keep exchanging until you get one that works but that is not too appealing to me. I just want to get a phone and go. With the ET it has worked great from day one with no issues at all.
To be honest there are some faults that only a tech geek would nit pick about. Most people I know never seem troubled by some of the issues that posters rant and rave about. People complained about the Photon screen, really? I had to go into our tech department and use their electron microscope to see what they were talking about.
I would have to say that both phones are about equal. You can't go wrong with either one. It all comes down to which one you prefer. If you are happy with the one you purchased then that's all that really matters.
The name is kind of catchy also "MOPHO". I thought about getting the Epic Touch too, but I think there are too many things that the MOPHO has the the touch does not.. Kickstand and webtop mostly.. I just wish there was more developer interest.
i agree with the comment about having a grudge with samsung. after owning a moment i'll never own a sammy phone again. just got my photon last night and the sales person was trying to push a samsung on me. i was take your sammy and shove it lady give me the photon!

Should I buy it?

I was in the sprint store today getting my evo shift repaired and saw the photon and thought it looked and felt great. Sine then I did some research and there are a lot of unhappy Customers.
Does this phone live up to the hype?
Yes, this is the best phone on sprint right now all phones have their quirks and this one has some but it is by far the best phone I have ever owned. major upgrade from a shift.

Are you running a custom launcher? I had a similar issue when using Go launcher, I installed launcher pro and the issue was gone. It was the launchers problem not the phone.

I came from Epic with the super AMOLED screen. This screen is not as bad as some would say. After a few days I don't even notice. The rest of the phone is top notch. I love having more reception than everybody else. The battery life is great. It's very fast and has a superior GPU to GSII. GSII also has lots of problems (loss of signal, rapid battery drain) and no updates in sight after more than a month. Evo 3d doesn't have the internal memory to keep more things off of SD card, which speeds things up. In my opinion, there isn't a better dual core at Sprint.

I left tmobile and the vibrant and came to sprint. I had the epic for about 2 weeks when the photon dropped. I was not a fan of the 3d and wanted a phone with great battery life and a bright screen in the daytime. This phone has exceeded my expectations. I do however wish the stock launcher wasn't so laggy, but Launcher Pro fixed that. Although their aren't many roms flowing in the forums I remain positive that there will be. Also this phone has the best reception for signal and wifi I have ever seen. I love it, and would recommend it over sprints other phones at the moment.
I would imagine most, if not all, of the people having problems with their MoPhos were running older firmware. When I first received the phone, it was running 45.2.5(?), which is 3 updates old. It was snappy, but I had horrendous battery life. However, after the updates, it's even faster and the battery life is fantastic. Moreover, reception is much better than any other smartphone I've played with.
You'll notice that on the Sprint website, the MoPho is not as highly rated as the Epic Touch. I assumed that was from the early adopters who were frustrated with the phones before Motorola released the updates.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better phone from any carrier. Sure, several phones on the market have a larger screen and/or faster processor, but I doubt any of these phones have the MoPho's battery life.
Lastly, of any phone on the market, I think we'd be one of the most likely to get the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich.
When I got my Photon I was going back and forth between this and the GSII and in the end the geek in me won out. I got the Photon for the HDMI out, and the webtop feature. I don't think "stock" webtop is super useful or interesting in it's current state but I think it has so much potential. I can see Google replacing the current linux build with a version of chrome OS, even if it doesn't hit my phone. I am confident it could be ported in the future. I've only started to play with modding the webtop partition but I've already learned so much about linux as well as it's similarities and differences from android. As an intermediate user I love to get in and mod my phone and webtop gave me a new challenge to expand my knowledge. Plus it's a dead sexy phone. I miss my super amoled screen on my epic4g but that will fade. I'm gald I got the photon and I look forward to future development.
I'm super happy with my Photon. I came from the Evo to this phone. It's worth the upgrade in my opinion. And a lot of the people that are unhappy with it are either because A) there isn't enough ROM's and **** to customize it or B) they did something to **** the phone up then blame the phone for their mistake. There are a couple of people that have legitimate issues, but most of those have been fixed via updates. Of which have come out quickly, so it's worth it IMO.
Yes... absolutely, yes. Especially now that we have a lapdock.

Just came from Bionic

And I can tell you IMHO, this phone blows away the bionic. I get a stronger more consistent signal, much better screen, the camera...not even close, I appear to be getting faster DL and UL speeds, build quality very similiar, faster, more responsive, NO DATA DROPS.
Though I really liked my Bionic, the Rezound has it beat pretty good.
One question...Gorilla Glass on the Rezound?

You'll see why I thought your question was funny if you read that thread.
Congratulations on dumping a horrible phone. Hope I can as well v

Sell the bionic or add a line and put the new line on a dumb phone and ditch the data plan.

I came from the Bionic aswell. Mine sold on craigslist pretty quickly. The Rezound is a much better device all the way around.
Well I did it! Made the switch. Bionic has nothing on the Rezound. The screen is to die for.

I had the Bionic and returned it. I really liked the phone and had always been a fan of Motorola. But when I got the Bionic I started to notice that sometimes when I picked it up I had no 3G at all. I live 8 blocks from a tower. When I went to Indianapolis the phone played hot potato between 4G and 3G and then none at all. Last night I went to Indy with the Rezound and it locked on to 4G and held on to it. As a matter of fact it picked up the 4g way before I got to Indy which the Bionic didn't. So far I am happy with the switch. The only thing I wish it did have is an FM radio. I like to listen the our local high School sports while I am at the game.

I was just going to ask if that is why you went to Indy, lol. I went to Penn HS so I am a little disappointed right now to say the least. I F****** hate Yeoman though, so I am glad they lost for that reason.
On the topic of the signal not picking up, my buddy has a bionic and just switched the other day, he had a similar situation and even with extended battery he wouldn't make it through an 8 hour day at work with it bouncing between the 2 so he just turned off LTE. Now he pulls good reception like me.

LOL no not just for that. We did see a lot of people wearing Penn shirts when we were killing time and driving around Lucas Oil stadium We went to see Jeff Dunham at Conseco. That man is funny as you know what. Plus gave me a chance to check out and see if the 4G and 3G played the hot potato game like the Bionic did. Now just waiting on the root.
So obviously proven better performance!
I had friends who went for both. I have been out of school for 6 years, so not sure why so many people went, lol.
How was LTE in a crowded environment? Probably not enough people drawing on it yet to get a real feel. Did you do any speed tests?

Dag gone it. LOL The data speeds was one of the things I was going to check when I got there but forgot. I did do some surfing the internet while I was waiting for the show to start and I was floored how quick web pages loaded and a couple of things downloaded from the market.

nope not Gorilla glass but that doesn't mean its garbage, just not gorilla.
I returned my bionic the first week, not impressed at all. I had major issues with the camera both video and pictures so the phone had to go.
I will say the only good thing the bionic has going for it is that the display works better outside sunlight.

The Bionic camera is laughably bad. I can't believe they release products like that.

This is hilarious. I just swapped my Bionic for the Rezound as well... I was so excited to rock the Bionic....until I tried the camera....my old Tmobile Wing took better pictures than the Bionic. I was very, very disappointed. How could such a beast of a phone be sold with a cracker jax box camera? Well, I want the Nexus, but still waiting. So I gave this Rezound a shot. I've had numerous HTC devices, and they all performed well. This Sense 3.5 is a ram hog, but I just ran the Clean Up Script to temp root and remove bloat, and BLAM, all is good. The camera is fantastic, and the screen is gorgeous! Lets see how it does..
I got lucky..
I went into the Verizon store 100% ready to pay full price for a phone. I dropped my Charge about a month ago and broke the glass. Just cosmetic because the screen and phone worked just fine. Then yesterday dropped it in the tub. Still was working but touch response was jacked.
So into the store... looked at the Razr and the Rezound. I picked the Rezound and at checkout, it rang up $299. I have only been a Verizon customer since June. My unlimited data is still on my plan and everything. Woot Woot!
So far really liking the phone. I was not sure if I could get over losing the Super AMOLED Plus on the Charge. I really did like that phone.
I don't care for all the crap-apps preinstalled on the Rezound. Verizon really needs to stop that!
All over this too. I just got my rezound today after dealing with the bionic for three long months. I am absolutely thrilled with this phone. I was given the bionic as a replacement for a tbolt. I was thrilled at first, but the camera, data drops, piss-poor Bluetooth audio streaming , etc... was intolerable. After months of complaining, I finally got them to give me a rezound.
I'm in love
A friend of mine bought his first smartphone the bionic. Well of course he thinks it is badass, its his first smartphone. Oh and did I mention he bought it when the resounded came out LOL. I sure hope he didn't pay 300 for it.
I just didn't have the heart to tell him how bad of a purchase he just made.
