So now that we have permroot, is there a wireless tether app that works? I tried the one here:
http://www.jonamerica.com/technology/the-htc-rezound-root-guide/
But although it starts, I don't see the ssid on my laptop. I think perhaps infrastructure doesn't work with that. I'd prefer to avoid ad-hoc.
So has anyone had success with a particular market or apk for wireless tether?
Thanks in advance!

Ive tried a couple versions of the usual Wireless Tether.apk, but I still only get wep as an option. Trying to find a way to get WPA2 to work.
I am using "Wireless Tether for Root Users" V2.0-7 and its working perfectly. None of the newer beta versions have worked correctly for me so far..
It seems to work in ad-hoc mode only though... but it works fine for me. I'm not using WPA either, I just leave it open with access control turned on.
Barnacle
I'm using Barnacle Wireless Tether from the app store and it's working EXCELLENT. Even brings over the 4G speed but is also working in Ad-hoc mode.

Whats not working? The link or the app?
If its the link then try a differnet browser.
If its the app then make sure you go to settings and select MS Routing and Clamping. Something like that anyways...

No wifi modes work in infrastructure on the rezound is my understanding. Adhoc only.
---------- Post added at 07:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:33 PM ----------
Tried the following:
Old Wireless Tether
New Wireless Tether
Barnacle
None will work. No signal comes out at all. The data counter will get to like .4kB and just freeze.
Yea, but i read that new wireless tether beta app, the dev was wanting to get it where it can support infrastructure mode, but only a few phones would be worked on....idk if its still in the works or not...

Yeah, I had no issues at all with WiFi tether. It has worked on every single android device I have ever had. Optimus, Evo 4G, Evo 3D, and the Rezound. I have tried every single version he has made to boot! Never had any issues.
Could it be the device looking for the hook is not seeing it because its ad-hoc on here?

Some devices do and some dont detect ad-hoc networks. Until we get a custom kernel capable, and software to manipulate it, we're stuck with ad-hoc only, which works for like, 95% of devices that would need to connect to it.

The whole point of tethering is to send a wifi signal without using your computer.
Noone wants to carry their computer around all the time, but sometimes you need internet on your devices that dont have a usb port.

Why not just use one of the many temp root methods and tether like that if you want WiFi for your iTouch?
Temp Root + Wireless Tether for Root Users
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
It initially tells you that you aren't root, but then it works fine when you enable it (at least for me on the newest beta).
Yea I have that. It doesn't work consistently but ima try re-rooting my phone

As it stands the QPST don't work. as soon as you reboot it overwrites the change.

They wont scold you for trying it. But it won't work unless you sign up for the additional service which costs $25 or $29 per month (can't remember which).
Is there no root app that allows us to use the Droid X2 as a wifi tether without the extra monthly charge? I keep seeing references to others who say they are doing this, but no one seems to want to say exactly what app they are using.

Actually I just tried it and I can connect to the internet with my W7 laptop with that ad-hoc tether program running on my Droid X2. I'm sending this reply over that connection.
I guess, as implied earlier in the thread, W7 makes provisions for ad-hoc. Don't know about other versions of Windows. My Samsung Galaxy Tab cannot see the connection.
still looking for a hotspot instead of ad-hoc wireless tether though, got multiple wi-fi devices that I may want to connect...
I am interested in the infrastructure Wifi as well. I am attempting to connect a Color Nook to the DX2 and can't get it to recognize the ad-hoc network.
for the NC, you have to dload an adhoc wifi supplicant file. then you have to replace the existing wifi supplicant file w/ it and then reboot. your NC should now be able to see and connect to ad hoc networks.
google is your friend.

FWIW The Wifi Teather program works with the new 2nd Generation B&W nook (at least since firmware update 1.0.1 - don't know if it worked before). So now the ad-hoc wifi teather works with my laptop running Win7 and my completely stock nook. I'm happy
im assuming there is no solution yet. im still using the ad-hoc method for now. but i would love to see a true hotspot
I don't know why people don't understand that you specifically said infrastructure vs ad hoc. You can use the phone for infrastructure for free.
First use the hotspot app and wait for it to start up.
Hook up your computer and open your browser
when it takes you to verizons website, all is good.
go to your phones dialer and type in *#*#INFO#*#* or *#*#4636
select phone info
go down almost to the bottom and you will see a button that says "turn off radio"
Press this and wait 10 seconds and press it again to turn it back on.
Now when it regains 3g signal you should have internet access on your computer.
You may have to redo this a few times for it to work. It works for me 75% of the time. Sometimes it doesn't work but most of the time it does.
Good luck

I can confirm that WiFi Tether if you go to there website the 3.1 Beta 2 appears to work perfectly on a rooted Photon. My phone now shows up as a network and with security on and everything my tablet and laptop surfed the net no problem.
I disagree 3.2 doesnt work , the best you can get is adhoc and it tells you that access control can not be enabled

Just a heads-up for anyone trying to connect to WiFi Tether with some/most Android tablets (like my Xoom). You might need to modify your device to be able to join ad-hoc networks. For the Xoom, it was as easy as replacing the wpa_supplicant binary.
Before I changed that file, my Xoom couldn't see the wireless network that my MoPho was broadcasting.
I have noticed that ever since I rooted my Thunderbolt I cannot tether. All devices will connect to my phone(other phones, computers, xbox, etc) but they cannot open a web browser. It used to work on the hotspot ap that came with the phone. The only thing I can think of is that on the stock app, I could change the security to wpa/wpa2/wep. On this new app I cannot change, am I grasping at something that isnt there or is there something else that needs to be done?

I noticed that the android wifi tether app states that it only works for 3G and 2G. I wonder if this is just a "canned" statement? Does anyone know, for sure, if it works for 4G tethering?
Yeah I did, neither the old or new one are getting more than limited access. Know idea what may have changed on the PC side? Nothing new or changed? Just the outrage on Verizons end last week. I'm baffled. I have tried a couple other Rome with the same results. Sucks pdanet is a third of the speed.

You rock JRocker23! Always helpful - a Thx is in order. Of course the Market QR code returns "No Results Found"
Try changing the type of connection to Infastructure or Ad-Hoc. I don't remember which one it was, but one of these fixed a very similar issue for me.
I used wireless tether without any problem on my old droid X, but now I'm having connection issues. My Asus transformer can see my Rezound just fine and connect, but my in dashoard Galaxy Tab doesn't see it at all.
I've tried the current beta of Wireless Tether, 2.0.7, Barnacle, and Open Garden, all with the same results.
We need to nail down what specific settings those successfully tethering are using.
Please list the following.
1. What app you are using.
2. What settings you are using (device presets, clamping, ect.).
3. What you are successful in tethering wirelessly to.
I'm going to run a few more tests, and post mine.
I don't mean to ask a dumb question but these apps just allow you to use your phones 4g on a laptop, etc. ? Are they free if you have unlimited data?

According to wiki ad hoc needs the same channels to work. For the people that do have it working what channels are you using in ad hoc mode.
Definition
To set up an ad-hoc wireless network, each wireless adapter must be configured for ad-hoc mode versus the alternative infrastructure mode. In addition, all wireless adapters on the ad-hoc network must use the same SSID and the same channel number.

The problem is what devices you try to use to connect to your phone's mobile connection. I tried connecting with my Asus laptop (Windows 7) and it wouldn't connect correctly. I tried connecting with my gf's windows xp laptop and it works perfectly fine!
