I love my evo 3D but one thing that has been driving me nuts is that whenever im holding it in landscape mode i keep hitting the heat sensitive buttons on the right while playing games or watching movies... this either causes the phone to vibrate or minimizes the app
is there a way to turn off the buttons in landscape mode?

i haven't seen any 3rd party apps which disable these buttons .. the only controls i've seen were for the LED backlight on the buttons, which i don't think is what you're looking for.
i would think, in theory, there should be some type of API an application could tap into which would disable those buttons. the first downside which comes to mind is there is no way to exit out of the application if for some reason the application has any type of issues and the back/home buttons are still disabled.
perhaps with back/home buttons disabled, enable volume rocker to go back to home? the logic starts to get a bit tricky.
the best and most narrowly focused solution which comes to mind would be for the game app developer to handle those buttons during game play. perhaps require the home or back buttons to be held instead of tapped in order to trigger their standard action.
perhaps a 3rd party app could disable tapping the buttons and require them to be held for 5 seconds in order to trigger their standard tapping action?
i know on ics, this is handled a bit better as there are no hardware buttons and they are handled in the software. in the stock ics gallery, the buttons are dimmed to dots instead of their full icons while viewing images, which gives the impression there is greater software control over those buttons than previously.
i'm sure if somebody else has seen any solutions, they'll post up.
hope that helps with a few technical thoughts from the background of an application developer!

Is it possible to listen to music on the XDA with the screen off? ie just like when your talking on the phone and the screen is off but the speaker is still active.
If I turn the phone off with the power button the music stops, also the auto power off after time X doesn't kick in when Win Media Player is running.
Having the screen on all the time (even with the back light off) really drains the battery.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
If you're using Windows Media Player, goto Tools, Settings, and then Buttons. You'll be able to map Screen Toggle to a key which will turn the screen on/off with the press of a button.

Hi!
Yes, you can do it too with other players like GSPlayer and Mort Player.
These players come with preset timer to off your screen to save battery power and at the same time allows you to listen to music.
resco audio thingy will do the same job, as will betaplayer.
be sure to enable the feature through options.
Also im sure there are many more programs that will do this for you.
(even just a backlight plug-in?)
w0rd.
Pocket Music Player 3 has this feature also. It's one of the better players I've found thus far.

phm power toys has a app that will turn off the display
http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/PowerToys/
Heres another little freeware app that I have been using for a while - gives an option on the Today screen to turn off display, and pressing one of the units buttons turns it back on.
Also gives on screen bar graph of the battery capacity (the main function of the program i think) plus main memory and expansion memory capacity/usage, plus a soft reset, ability to turn off auto power off and a few other things i cantremember.....
There has been a lot of notes from people who have installed and cant uninstall (although why you would want to is beyond me..) but if you go into settings/today/items/ select power check then options, there is all the configuration settings plus instructions on how to uninstall.
Cheers, Dave.
EDIT.... Might help if i pasted in the link huh... http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/powercheck.shtml
EDIT2... Worth mentioning that the default button to fire back up the screen is Button 1, which on the XDA2 is the top right button (calendar). Don't do what I did and try each of the buttons - couldnt work out what button 5 was so I selected it as the option to turn back on the unit - guess what - there is no button 5 on the XDA2.... soft reset wouldn't bring it back up, had to hard reset in the end... Please learn from my mistakes!!!
Hi everyone,
As most of you, I am looking forward for the Froyo upgrade which is supposed to release this week.
While waiting for that, can I ask can you recommend me any application that can unlock the Streak without pressing the power button? At first, I like that way to unlock the phone but after that I discover that it makes the power button sunk, something like that button is eroded after pressing so many times.
Is there anyway to unlock the phone just by touching the screen like the Iphone.
I tried unlock v2.0 or some application like that but they all request press the power button.
I will be grateful if anyone can help me answering me this.
Thank you so much.
I second this request if anyone knows! Thanks all...
Carlos
I too would like a different way of turning the screen on without the power button, ideally I'd like an app that can allow me to turn the screen on with the camera button instead.....preferably only requiring the first level button rather than having to push it all the way in.....I'm still not 100% comfortable with where the power button is located at the moment as well as like the OP said, it kinda sits a little too far in (sunk) and makes it difficult to find or press sometimes.....plus I don't press the camera button all that much so I'd rather have that and that it'll be the first button you'll find along the top.
Do a search for remapping keys in this f forum. I believe someone reported success in mapping the camera key to wake from suspend. I don't think you'll be able to power on using the camera button, though.
I'm pretty sure when the screen times out it physically turns off, so you wouldn't be able to wake it up that way.
The camera button is certainly possible though, ill look into it.

I just had another thought. Tasker might do this for you. Instead of suspending, tasker can shut everything off and blank the screen with maybe a button press. Then when you touch the screen, everything is turned back on, and the screen lightens up as well. You will certainly lose more battery this way, but if the iphone is doing this, it must be the same there.
i used to use widgetlocker and it gives the option to unlock from any hardware key.
However i am using nolock and hence do no have a lock screen which is even better.
Suspend wake on a swipe or one of the soft keys would be great. The hardware button on my touch hd was getting difficult to press towards the end of an 18 months contract. My girlfriends went completely she had to remove the bit on top of the button and press in with the stylus to power on.
So anything to prevent adidonal wear on the streaks button would be a warm welcome

Using the soft keys the wake the phone is risky.
Its very easy to.press on the soft keys when they r in the pocket.

I came across this by accident
I installed screen suite locker to replace normal lockscreen but old lock screen kept coming up too, so I downloaded no lock to disable default lockscreen completly.
Works just how I wanted it portrait lock screen no default lockscreen, but now camera, volume & normal power button wakes up the streak
"menu unlock" from the market works perfectly. Its a black icon with pale grey horizontal lines

I have the iphone. I can't unlock the screen without touching either the home button or the power button on the top of the phone. Besides, wouldn't the phone keep turning on if touching the screen woke it up?
No because it's capacitive only your hand (ideally) would wake it up.
I'm going to try these solutions, because I do not want to cause anymore wear on the buttons.
Try the volume rockers, mine, froyo is powering up the screen. As for the lockscreen app i have simply lockscreen. It's not so fancy, but it does a simple good job. This combination, makes the Streak wake up with volume rockers, and no other key like camera or capacitive buttons. Also, incomming call screen is in portrait, even if I let the phone down on the table.
Chers,
I hate the lock screen and don't why we cannot disable it.
Anyway, I use the app calls No Lock, by Bod from Android Market. Now, I can simply use the volume up or down button to turn streak on and without the lock screen.
Instead of even the volume rockers, can we not do something with just the three capacitive buttons ?
Try "lock 2" from the market paying of fro free You can unlock with all the button and then slide with your finger.
I use it from whe I had my dream and it works very well
I frequently use my Epic 4G as an audio player/streamer. I've been using a widget to prevent the screen from sleeping entirely which was all fine and dandy, except that I now have Pandora's GUI burned into the bottom of my phone. I absolutely hate having to press the physical power button to wake my screen and then unlock it just to skip a track or whatever. Does anyone know of an app that would allow the screen to black out, but then awaken via touch? Ideally with no lockscreen, but to the lockscreen without the power button would even be heaps better than having to deal with that physical power key on the side of the phone.
This is probably the dumbest question ever asked on this forum, but I have no idea which end is up on my Tab. I bought this thing used off CL so I have no idea how the orientation was out of box. Then, it works no matter how I turn it in my hands which confuses me more.
So, I figured a simple solution would be to look at the volume rocker and see which way I have to push it to turn the volume up. That makes me think the power button/volume goes in the lower left hand corner. But I find myself bumping the buttons during regular use and the Time magazine app displays upside down. So I rotate it the other way so the power button/volume is in the upper right hand of the device but now when I press volume down the volume goes up and vice versa so I'm extremely confused. Which end is up on this thing?
You want the buttons on the top of the Tab.
The Word SAMSUNG should be in the lower...
...in addition, the 30 pin connector is at the bottop, right below SAMSUNG ...

His question is about portrait mode.
As per me the volume buttons should be top right hand corner. Also try to get accustomed to use the volume button in the opposite way

So the volume rocker is backwards then? When I'm holding it in portrait (I never use it in landscape ever) the dock connector is on the left and the power buttons on the right then? Why is the rocker backwards?
1) Correct, this is the dumbest question ever asked on this forum.
2) There is no "up" on a tablet. That's kind of the point. Some programs will turn to a specific orientation. In these programs, your best bet is to turn the tablet so that the words read left to right. Or so that the angry birds fly from left to right. I really hope you get the picture, but judging from the question, I'm skeptical that you don't need a youtube video (the "play" button should be in the lower left hand corner).

Thing is I feel like I'm operating a helicopter with all the spinning. I just want one end to be up so I can label it with an arrow or something. Different apps change the orientation confusing the crap out of me.
Just use it the way it fits best to use.
And as a hint, the tab is less laggier if you hold it landscape with the Samsung Logo readable. A weird Tegra 2 Bug which hasn't been fixed until know, hardware problem
Go into the settings and turn off autorotate then. Problem solved. At least one of them, that is...

I tried that at first. But some apps turned it upside down and the market always goes into landscape for some reason. It never displays in portrait.
If there was a hall of fame for stupid threads on XDA, this one would be in it.
No need for that, we all have to start off somewhere.
Galaxy tab 10.1 is supposed to be operated in landscape mode. So almost all the apps will open in landscape except some non tablet optimized ones.
Despite having no lock screen set, I cannot get the volume button long press to work to load the applications. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The option is enabled, and I've only disabled applications that deal with the voice recognition stuff from LG.
Edit: Go figure... After half an hour of research and trying different things it only works after I posted this question. I have no idea what I did differently.

I assume your talking about the screen off press and hold to launch camera or quick note trick? I've noticed a couple Times it hasn't worked right for me, but it usually does.
Make sure your screen is off, and press vol down and hold for a good couple seconds and it should launch the shortcut. Also make sure the proximity sensor isn't covered. Mine didn't work at all when it was covered, which is the same for the double tap to wake.
Btw, do you know how to change what the button launches? I like the camera but don't care for quick note, and didn't see a way to change it.

I have found they will not launch for me if I am in a Chromecast session, or playing some music with the screen off through the phone's speaker. I am assuming that was my problem since I can't replicate it under any other circumstances.
There is an option in the phone's menu system to turn it on or off, but it does not allow for the shortcut to be changed. We'll have to wait for custom ROMs to give us this feature.

Yeah that does make sense. And I didn't think they were changeable but it's good to know this is confirmed.
