I tried searching for a how-to on this but apparently I'm searching inclined.
From what I can gather is it as simple as just dumping the zip onto the root of your SD card and doing:
3. Make sure phone is off then hold Power button and Call Button.
4. The menu opens quickly press the power key over the hboot option.
5. Follow onscreen instructions to install the update. the phone will reboot a few times.
you dont even need to search. go to the development section and then look at the top few, it will have very detailed instructions.
I guess I should have elaborated more and said I don't have my phone rooted and really don't want to go that route. I was just getting confused because everything i was finding on here was people running root but I came across a few things where people said the 2.1OTA Leak was just a straight upgrade, so that is my confusion.
Are you asking how to install the 2.1ota leak? Just flash it onto your phone?
Curious, why do you not want to root your phone?
Root is much more flexible, and there are roms that are based off that leak. If you're worried about your warranty, it's going to void it either way, lol.

yeah that is my question, can 2.1OTA just be flashed or does your phone need to be rooted?
I just feel like with root I'll be more likely to kill the phone but I'm going to check into it more again.

Root really isn't that hard to do. There are several threads over in the development forum.

yeah I was just reading the thread on going from stock 1.5 to rooted 2.1. Can you give me some of the major benefits of rooting? I'm trying to find really practical stuff, not just the "Well it's cool cause it's like being root in Linux".
And just to clarify you can just flash to 2.1OTA? I'm skeptical of doing that now because I was reading some people think 2.1OTA has a time sensitive date on it.
Future developments will likely be easier to impliment if you root. The ability to run different (and potentially more stable) ROMs. Support for future software not designed for the Eris. Post rooting you can also make Nandroid backups and as long as you don't somehow screw your bootloader you can actually fix your phone.
Also, and this is pure speculation, should Verison decide to discontinue support for the Eris entirely, non-rooters may have issue getting new Android versions since they're limited to signed code.
EDIT: there is also little reason NOT to root. It does everything that you can do unrooted and more. All this plus the fact that you may never be able to root again but could always unroot at your leisure.

Can you point me to a good nandroid tutorial? tried searching for one but if you know of a good one I'd appreciate it.
I was trying to find a nandroid guide when I did it the first time, but once I discovered that Amon_RA's recovery has it built-in, I decided to wing it and see what happened. It was a lot easier than I expected to be honest.
Reboot your phone into recovery (VOL UP + Power), you should have a short list of options, one of which should be Backup/Restore. Trackball into it and select to make a backup. Let it do it's thing, should take a few minutes. Congratulations, you've made a backup of your phone. You can make as many as you like, they're given names based on the date and time they're created, but you can rename without harm (barring a few characters keep it A-Z a-z 0-9 and you should be good)
Restoring to that backup is as easy as entering the same menu but picking restore instead. You need to have made a backup first in order to restore something.
NOTE: I've written all this by memory, and while it should be fairly accurate, I can't turn my phone off currently to double check that the wording is all correct.

If you followed Ivan's guide to the very end, you already flashed Amon_RA's recovery to your phone. To enter it, shutdown your phone and then hold volume up and the call end button (power), you should boot into the recovery.

As the Title says im going to attempt to root my Evo 3d this weekend. Well, I have never rooted anything and I have to admit im nervous, excited and in some places very confused while understanding other stuff. Ive tried to read, read read and read some more for the last couple weeks. BUT like I said some things I still kinda lost on. Any of you experienced folks with rooting have any great tips or suggestions? What are all the basics as far as apps and such are a must have? What are preferred? Eventually Id love to get into learning more about Android and be part of the dev world in some way. I am computer literate have a business that does computers and IT now. Just never done any of this with Phones. Ive searched all over XDA and some other sites for as much info.. But maybe im just nervous and unsure as I would hate to brick my Phone but... well you know the desire to do this and learn is really big. My last Android device a HTC hero I left stock. Wish now I would have rooted it. But either way here i am now.

We got a root virgin. It's not as hard as people make it. You could temp root, install titanium backup, and backup all of your user apps but that isnt necessary. Just root your phone using revolutionary(threads and guides in the development section). Then you can install a recovery and flash a rom and get down to business. Im getting ready to do Temp root then use one of the back up programs (probably Titanium Pro) and do a back up. I assume you just back it up to your SD card and are able to reload from there.
It seems like rooting has some in general things in common but also each device has their own little ways of things.
And Yes... I am a Virgin Root. Lol

Yes each device does have their own little differences, like while i was rooting my nexus s, i got the easy way out. Someone had made a 1 click root for me so I didn't have to do anything.
But yes, do make sure you backup everything using Titanium Backup Pro (noone told me this while i was rooting and I had to install 150+ apps all over again ).

He made youtube walk through videos that were very clear. It's pretty easy but if you are nervous, just watch them a few times and I'm sure you'll get a good idea of the process.
After S-Off, some had 'error 16' messages when trying to dial or text. It happened to me as well. As you might of read, just let the phone connect to Sprint and the representative will fix it on their end. Or just call the activations line and tell them you got a 'error 16' and can't dial, they'll fix it for you. If clockwork recovery fails for you like it did for me, 'WillJitsu' also posted a video for the TeamWin recovery install.
The only problem I had was during the '.zip' name change. On my computer running Windows 7, the file name doesn't show the '.zip' at the end so when I was changing it as instructed, I got errors (since I didn't know, I was accidentally making into a '.zip.zip' thus it never worked). Other than that, it was very simple to do.

I think tonight I will do temp root do a titanium backup and read some more and check out the videos. Do a factory reset after the temp root then go after the full perm root. Is there any way to avoid the error 16 and customer service call or is it a random issue?
I'm also curious. Let's say I want to return the phone back to stock and unroot it ? Can I and how? Also what's a good ROM for me to start with? Anything to avoid?

You should just do the Revolutionary method, no need to temp root anymore. IIRC there were some that had problems since they started with temp root and attempted to do Revolutionary (best to search on this to confirm and see what kind of resolution they took).
Not sure if the Sprint call centers are open on the weekends so probably do it on Monday during their normal business hours.
For the Error 16, don't worry about calling in, they fix it quickly after you answer some account security questions to confirm that you are the actual owner of the account. If you search, someone posted how to do this without calling in but honestly I can't remember if it worked or not plus you might need your msl number.

I've never done the S-On so I can't comment on it.
Whole bunch of ROM's in the Developer section, best to click on them and see what they offer. It really depends on what you want in a ROM.

Well HiredGUN.45 , I didnt get to read your post before hand but I did do the Temp root. From what I read about doing perma root after doing Temp root is you need to do a factory reset. I assume after doing that I can load my back up from Titanium Pro and it will return it all as it was before temp root? Or do I need to do something different?
And I wont be doing Perma Root Til Monday in case I need to call in for the Error 16 issue.

When Rooting a Phone does it keep all the same functions? I noticed there was a flash/rom for the Radio in the phone. Why would you need to flash that? I still want to make sure I can Text, Call, Use 3 and 4g as well as my other features.

yes, you still keep all the features...just read each rom, pretty sure all roms have everything working but every now and then you may get a bug like we did with the og evo like 4g wouldn't work or hdmi etc...however they would eventually all get fixed due to the great devs we have here.
The reception of your phone depends on a combination of many different things, including your radio. Flashing a new radio will change the performance of your wireless signal, maybe for the better, maybe for the worse...
I would only flash a radio if I were you if a Rom Developer had specific instructions to do so.
First root your phone with revolutionary. Everything will still remain the same as if nothing happened. When your phone boots back up, let it go through the handsfree activation. This should help you avoid the error 16 message. If not try to make a call and let sprint fix the issue, and of course don't mention root. Everything after the actual root process is a step by step learning type of thing. Ok I did the Temp root. Used Titanium Back up ( I also use another good back up program that works with bot root and non rooted phones My back up pro) But I did get successful Temp root. I went ahead and made back ups. Then did a factory restore. Wiped both the Phone and SD card. Now I have something different going on. I use a Blueant Blue Toorh head piece. It talks and reports things to you. But before all this When I powered on the Head piece. It would say " Powering up" Followed by "Your Phone is Connected" Then Followed by saying "HTC EVO 3D"
Now it says ALL of that EXCEPT.... When it gets to wher it says the manufacture and name of the phone... It says "PG 86 thousand One hundred" And yes I know thats the Model number of the Phone. But what happened to the HTC Evo 3D call out?
Either way Tomorrow at some point in time Im gonna do Perm root.

Alright just hit me up if you need some help. Im no Android genius but far from a noob. I'll just be setting you straight with all the basic knowledge and some extra tips to get you up to speed.

After you root and activate and verify that everything is working on your rooted stock rom, I'd recommend that you do a nandroid backup before you start flashing other roms. That way, you'll always be able to find your way back to where you were right after rooting in case things go south. Be sure to check the box next to "wimax" and verify that they get backed up with everything else. Should be around 12MB of data in a folder at the backup location on your SD card. Wouldn't hurt to keep a couple full backups.
The ability to nandoid backup is the main reason I root my androids.

You do this VIA your recovery menu under 'nandroid'. I just rooted mine today and had a couple stumbling blocks that weren't outlined in the root guide and I can see pplnew to this banging their heads out of frustration.feel free to pm me if you run into any issues. You may run into an issue with adb not seeing your device,and your bootloader not seeing your recovery.zip both had me stumped for a while but the fixes were really easy.

If you did what i just highlighted then you basically temp rooted for nothing. From my limited understanding, temp rooting is just to get a Titanium backup of the stock phone in case anything happens. But if you wiped the phone AND the SD card then you erased any backup you made.
Anyone else notice that the Open / Exit animations (zooming in when opening an app and zooming out when closing) don't work with any of the market launchers on this phone. Tried just about every launcher option out there, and it strikes me as odd. It's not that big deal, but I enjoy the effect. Anyone know a launcher where this works?
Also, does anyone know a way to wake the phone with the volume key? When I had my incredible 2 there were some lockscreen apps that did it, or stand-alone apps that would enable it as well, but I can't seem to find a way to do it on this phone. Any info would be great.

Try FoxFi with the Proxy Add-on. It works well, but only with HTTP/HTTPS protocol. If you need something other than HTTP/HTTPS or can not use a proxy, you'll have to go with a wired USB tether.
hate that new shared data plan. It would end up costing me more money just to share data. I'll take a look at FoxFi thanks

Thanks Andy this is great! I know on the Incredible 2 you had done something like this but the zip also removed the crosshairs from the status bar. Do you have any plans to make something like that for this device? If so, could it also remove that annoying "no wifi" icon that's on the top left of the status bar?

no your best bet it to download the ROM.zip I pulled from the OTA and install the RUU through bootloader using the file I pulled.

INSTRUCTIONS
1) Download this - MD5 = 55023CC10B59FDEC0AAA6695C4CF83FB
2) rename to PJ53IMG.zip (make sure it's not named PJ53IMG.zip.zip...)
3) put the PJ53IMG.zip on the root of your SD-Card. (not in any folders)
4) reboot to bootloader
5) let the phone do its magic
6) enjoy Sense 4.1
7) smile.
P.S. - you need to re-lock your bootloader to to do, the command in fastboot is
Fastboot oem lock
then once you install the RUU through bootloader, make sure you have your Unlock_code.bin saved from the bootloader unlock (if not don't worry you can always get it back from the HTC-Dev unlock site

reboot to bootloader get into fastboot mode
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

make sure you're on the new OTA ROM,
AND it will NOT work if you are NOT on Nit ROM based off the new OTA update.
if you are just rooted and with superuser you are on an odex ROM..
Nit's ROM is deodexed, which mean I can edit the appropriate smali files.
You will get better results from Nits ROM from stock anyway IMHO

If you really don't want to run the ROM and want to stay on stock (which is no difference, it's just a pain to make MODs, and they usually have problems)
So, I suggest,
reboot to recovery,
1) make a nandroid
wipe,
2) factory reset
3) System
4) Cache
5) dalvik cache
6) install ROM, boot up the ROM,
reboot back to recovery, flash the .zip above, and profit
Ok, so I didn't want to completely reflash the rom and lose all my apps so I did something a little different
I flashed the stock recovery via fastboot which DID work
I accepted the OTA update, and it downloaded and began to install however it failed because I flashed the "Google Now Mod" that I had posted in another thread...
and I'm guessing it might fail because of the 3-button remap I flashed as well
is there any way around this? I would rather just accept the OTA and do it that way
so this is my problem. Im having some issues with my phone and I want it to be changed. The issues really dont matter. In order for my provider to send me another phone they want me to do a master reset. This of course will delete all my apps and settings. As far as I know there is not a backup app that once you restore the phone and apps the restored phone will have all it's app data in place, the icons will be where you want them, etc, just like you would from when you clone or make an image from a Hard Drive from pc... Or is there and application that will do this? My only other option (i believe) is to root the phone to then use an app to do a real backup, then unroot the phone, root the new phone and do the restore. I also have to remove the root from the old phone but can that be done without increasing the counter? This is all a big hassle. I cant believe you can do a real backup/restore on a phone nowadays....
If there is any other way to do it I will appreciate the help. I will have to do this in the next days since my warranty expires in a bit over a month...

You are correct ....
Rooting of the device is needed, then the unroot.
It's the only method I'm aware of in getting a full nandroid backup ..g
Sarge has it right if you want to use backup apps.
If you don't want to root, you will need to flash TWRP or CWR to get the custom recovery and backup. Then make a backup to your external SD card. Use recovery to factory reset. Send the phone away after removing SD card and sim card. The backup is called a nandroid and it is basically an image of the phone.
On new phone flash same recovery then restore the backup. When you start the phone it will be as the broken one was.
You can remove the recovery from the broken phone, but I never heard of anyone getting problems from the warranty people for that.
Thanks both of you guys for the information. I am getting ready to do the root not only for the backup but there are quite a few apps that I want to use that require root that I am going to have to do it.
Now, I started reading tonight and the more I read the more I get confused. Is there an official guide to root the note (specifically AT&T running ICS 4.0.4 if there is a difference) in a way that I can unroot it in the future avoiding tripping any counters?
I have read so many different threads about rooting, they tend to be different so I am looking for the "current" accepted "method" to do this with decent steps if possible. Thanks much!

Yeah I understand, you're wanting to do a full backup of your phone before you turn it in right? Or, at the very least, your apps and settings?
Welp, here you go: no root required.
A quick google search for "ADB backup" should get you the info you need as well.
Also looks like there's an XDA dev who came up with a much easier interface (as opposed to doing everything via command-line, which still isn't that difficult). Might be worth checking:

Edit: Read your second post, and it looks like you're interested in rooting...I guess I was confused as to your intentions after reading you first post, which just sounded like you didn't want to lose your info after doing a factory reset. Regardless, it is HIGHLY advised before doing any sort of root-related activity to do an ADB backup. That way, if anything goes wrong in the rooting process itself, or if you later decide you want to go back to stock and/or all of your original apps and settings from before the root, you can literally be back with a clean slate within a matter of minutes.

after looking at adb I see it would not work for my initial needs as it only can be restored to the same device. I wanted something I could do a backup in the old one and restore that backup in the new one. Anyway, since I am past that anyway I am going to give it a try in theold device.... thanks!

The full backup, yes (regarding being able to only restore to the same device) but you could literally extract whatever data you want from the ADB backup using WinRar, then manually push it to your new device.
Apparently ADB backup is broke, it does not respect the -noshared flag and the resulting file is corrupted requiring more processing on the file for it to work... dang it! Seems it has been fixed in JB...

and there is more if you search the net.... Now, why will they not fix it is beyond me. Ok, so the command does not respect -noshared, that is easy to fix, I can just pull my sd card out but making an otherwise broken and unusable file giving the user the false sense of security and not fixing the bug is plain wrong... The only option will be to upgrade to JB but the official upgrade is not out and knowing at&t I wont be for a bit... I am not much into flashing leaked rom although that might change in the near future...

Well crap man, that sucks - sorry! I'm not gonna lie, I didn't read the link you posted as I'm pulling all nighters about 3 times a week during for the busy season of my profession (see my user name lol)...but you're saying that something actually went WRONG with the SDK on ICS firmware - and Google isn't fixing it?? That can't be right...right?
I can personally couch for this method, as I used it to make a full unrooted backup - of stock 4.0.4 ICS - back in October when I rooted my Note for the first time. And the first thing I did (per the rooting tutorial I was following) was verify the backup by doing a restore via ADB before I rooted - and everything worked fine. Like I said, sorry it's not working for you! Have you considered rooting, installing a custom recovery, doing a nandroid backup (and saving it someplace safe of course), then doing a full unroot back to stock + reset your flash counter? There are some great tutorials to walk you through all of that on the Galaxy Note Everything Thread in the General forum, in case that's an option.

But what's the point in putting things simply like that when I can write an entire paragraph saying the same thing, but more confusing??
I've recently purchased a Thunderbolt from eBay (which I know is always a bit sketchy, and that the device is getting a bit older) but so far it's been a relatively good little phone. I'm definitely enjoying the LTE over the 3G my iPhone 4 had before I accidentally murdered it. I have the HTC Dev unlock on this phone, but the stock ICS rom pushed out by Verizon and HTC feels bloated and slow to me, having come from the iPhone 4 running a jailbroken iOS 6.1.2.
Would someone be so kind as to point me towards a fast, stable ICS or Jellybean ROM and instructions on how to install it and a proper recovery on my phone? I'm not all that picky about appearances, and I wouldn't mind running stock Android either if someone can tell me how to get it running on this phone. Currently I'm running all of the latest updates courtesy of the previous owner (I'm up to HBOOT 1.08, ICS 4.0.4, software version 7.02.605.10 710RD).

EDIT: After much more tinkering, I have managed to get Clockwork Mod Recovery running on my phone, but I would still very much appreciate if someone had a suggestion for a ROM that runs quickly and efficiently.
Look through the Development forum here and head over to Infected Roms. Lots of answers to your questions in both places. Just takes a little time go through the threads to find what you need.

I just mashed my Rezound, so I'm back on the TBolt as well and had to go through the same thing. Before I go all out on this, I can tell you that the process to get this done isn't that bad considering I will compile all the instructions here, but you have to flash a patch through HBOOT then relock the phone, take it back to an older ROM, run revolutionary on it for s-off, load radios, then back to ICS lol. If you think it will be worth it to you, let me know an I will post the links. It's just a bunch of back and forth and I took me about a week to find all the pieces.

Hey, works for me! I really want to like Android, but Verizon's firmware is so bloated and slow it makes it hard to do. I'm willing to go through the work if it means I can get a phone that runs the way I want.
My cousin keeps telling me I need to run pure Android, and honestly, that's what I'd like to do if at all possible, but any ROM that runs efficiently is good for me.

Go to this page to start the journey http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thundebolt-hacking-guides/8695-guide-how-gain-root-s-off-after-taking-ics-ota.html and just FYI, I use 4ext recovery now and love it, but you have to be s-off and rooted to get it. use the QR code found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31966447 It will download and app to your SD card (typically) under "Downloads" and you will need a file manager or root explorer to install it, and I had to download "4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC5" twice before it took.
Then once you have gone through those steps (I had TWRP recovery and it worked) you will be on GB. To save some time, go to http://forums.infectedrom.com/ and create an account. I doesn't have to be verified by the admin to download. Once your account is created, go to http://forums.infectedrom.com/showthread.php/1912-ROM-Official-Thunderbolt-ICS-Rooted-Deodexed-Stock?p=67120&viewfull=1#post67120 and download the radio and flash it, then download the ROM of your choice. I used the "DEBLOATED Rom Deodexed version: 7.02.605.10 710RD". It's stock with all of the VZW crap pulled out and deodexed. I'm haveing to revert back to a custom GB ROM because the new ICS kernel doesn't have the built-in support for the 2-way call recording feature, but everything else works like a dream. I agree, that for the TB, staying close to stock on ICS is a good idea since development has dwindling for this device. Cheers and let me know if you need any help with this. just reply here

I've been attempting to do just that, and every time I try to load my recovery, I keep getting ClockworkMod. 4ext fails to install, despite the app saying it was successful.

I don't quite remember how I got to the end result of 4ext actually working but I remeber I had to download it twice from the installer app, and told the app to wipe cache + dalvik... but just to make sure, check these steps:
1) make sure you're rooted with s-off and have SU and busy box installed.
2) download the updater app file from the link provided in the QR code (from previous post).
3) make sure "unknown sources" is enabled in settings so you can install the updater app, then find the app in your download folder on your SD card and install it.
4) open the updater app and give it SU permissions, then run the install/update option and select the proper file. This will also be stored on your SD card (in a 4ext folder I think...don't quote me on that though).
after install you should be good, but I believe you can push via ADB as well. Attached is a PDF from the Dev on this as well.

Now that I am thinking about it. Did you update super user or super su after getting root? The app itself probably needs it and the binary as well. You can update the binary by opening the app. It should prompt you to update it.
