Every now and then when I activate the screen to unlock my Rezound I get a blue screen. Sometimes it's a split screen and others it's the whole screen. It flickers back and forth between the unlock screen and the blue screen.
Sometimes after maybe 15 seconds it just goes back to normal. Other times if I turn the screen off, it will turn back on just fine.
Has anyone else had this issue? What was the solution?
Here's a video I made of it happening. Sorry it's sideways I had to use my DInc

Had a similar problem with my DInc. Didn't deal with it early, and it came to be a real problem. Take it back ASAP.
I have that problem too once in a while, not that big of a deal yet.

Have you tried a factory reset? I would guess that is a software bug.

Just got my Rezound last week and just experienced this blue screen exactly how you described, any ideas why this happens? I pretty sure i'm going to exchange it for a new one but just wondering what the cause is...
Does anyone know if this is a hardware issue or a software issue? I've had it happen three times now, and I'm wondering if I should call VZW for a replacement before it's too late and I have to settle for a refurb POS.

So wait, if we work at the store, we could just swap our **** out whenever **** happens, instead of waiting 3 days for a refurb?
Damn, makes me hope I get the job even more now, lol
nah lol my store has a 2 week return policy..if it's a defective unit, we swap it out for them, and send the defective one right back to verizon.
My first one did that too occasionally... About 5 times in the second month of owning it... And then one day the screen just never turned back on.
Return it.
I would take that back. As many have said, it could lead to more serious problems down the line. Give the Verizon rep a link to your youtube video.

I thought this had something to do with the ROM. i remember i have seen it before... i think it was on my Dinc as soon as sense 3.0 roms came out and eventually it got worked out so i think it is just a bug.
It did it the first time with me on stock gb. But it has happened twice since then on nils business.

I just bought one used but looks brand new cosmetically and I've had it less than 24 hours it's happened 4 or 5 times already. So I'm sending it back. As for a cause only thing that comes to mind is maybe it's the result of somebody overclocking the piss outta it and now the GPU is permanently damaged, although some people in other forums claim the same thing has happened to brand new phones as well so who knows...

hmm, never overclocked my rezound and I get it occasionally. There were a couple of stock ics kernels that had this problem pretty severely. I would update it first and see if that resolves it.

It's still on GB but I'll try that.. Do you happen to know what the latest stock GB software number is? Mine is on 2.01.605.11 I don't have a sim card at the moment so I can't check if it's fully updated till I get one. Thanks

dev section should have all the stock roms, I would probably flash the newest GB stock ROM, RUU would be best to make sure it isn't a software problem.

Hey guys, it's deedscreen. The creator of the MoPho XDA Fan Group, facebook, Twitter, and Google+ page, and you may also know me as the one with the problems with the Photon who constantly nags, and rants with issues.
I just want to know if anyone has these issues too.
I have to deal with the phone being slow, constantly freezing, and the sleep of death, even after the latest update.
For the longest, I couldn't update the Photon, I found a thread on how to fix it by 'SBFing. So, I SBF'd it, it worked fine, updated to the latest software.
It was working fine, now I am back to the same issues, plus I cannot install any applications, nor update any applications. It will just say "INSTALLING" for literally hours, and never installs.
I have had the worst luck with this phone, I am going to 'SBF it back to stock, because a factory reset will not get rid of the battery icon modification.
I'm gonna return it to Sprint for a new one. I HAVE HAD IT WITH THIS PHONE!!! Why is it only me with this bad luck? It feels like no one else has these issues on the forums, I am always the one posting with these problems, myself alone! This phone is bad luck for me. I love it, when it works.
///RANT
PLEASE NOTE:
If you have a problem with this thread, keep your trap shut. I will have this thread closed if anyone insults me again, like the last time I had major issues. I am just experiencing bad luck. I need to know if anyone has similar issues. Sorry if I offended anyone.
Are you having similar issues?
Have u tried a completely stick photon...not modded and none of ur market Apps installed? ?

Dude, you are definitely NOT alone. I love this phone too when it is working properly. These are my two main issue:
Random Reboots
Keyboard locks up - When this happens, the phone will not dial out. (Reboot required)
* This is my 2nd MoPho and I had the same issues with my first one. *
Factory defects with hardware do happen. Replace if you can.

The reason why I am not quoting you guys, is because misleads users to think that I already have enough replies, so here we go.
@lucidvtec - I have tried stock options, that doesn't work always, not having any applications from the market installed is like asking me to jump off a bridge.
@sjamie - I do get random reboots ocassionally, but my keyboard, (no matter which one I use), constantly locks up. I get the "Sleep of Death" all of the time, and Constant Freezing. Please vote at the page here, on the forums to poll your results for issues with the Motorola Photon 4G MB855.
@Rapidlayout - You are correct.

@lucidvtec, @sjamie, @ Rapidlayout: I am on my fifth Photon.

Just to let you know ahead of time, the Full Wipe, MSL Reset, and latest 198_7 sbf, will appear to work, it will work perfectly fine for about a month and a half, like mine, and you will have the same issues all over again.
Just to let you know.
I'm about to go to the Sprint Customer Advantage Repair Center Store, for my 6th Motorola Photon 4G device. Motorola has supposedly fixed the problem. WE SHALL SEE.
I just have to do an SBF before I go to the Store. I did a battery modification and I want it reset to stock values.
Sorry to hear. It sucks to hear of others having such problems with the Photon. Myself and others have been lucky to just have the "normal" issues all smartphones have in common.
If I was in your shoes, each time I got a new phone it would be run stock for at least a week or two with no apps whatsoever installed (I know, I know...what is the point right?) just to see if the issues exist straight out of the box.
I hate to say it but I would have probably swapped the phone a few times and then moved to something else. At some point it just isn't worth it anymore.
Wonder if it is some type of voltage issue. Have you talked to Motorola about it and if so, what has been said?

I am devoted to the Photon, I love it's features, style, (MAINLY, I've puchased a bunch of accessories, and Sprint said that I can only get the HTC EVO Design 4G, or the Optimus, they are supposed to allow me to get a phone that is of equivalent specifications which is the Epic Touch SII Galaxy, which Sprint refused to give me.
Motorola says "We have never heard of anything like this, what are you talking about? This cannot be true!"
Those reps are quite frankly put, "stupid" in regards to the Photon and its technical difficulties. (Sorry if I offended any reps on the site.)
Sprint is trying to do the old "bait and switch on me"
I am willing to pay up to $100 price in differance, but I have put too much effort in the Photon and the Photon Forums here at XDA. After all, I am the creator of the Photon Fan Club Group here at XDA, (if you are not a member, look at my signature and join below.), I have created the Twitter, Google+ and facebook pages for this phone.
You know what I'm saying?
(By the way, I just SBF'd my phone without taking my microSD card out, and the SIM card, and I wanted to move all of my data before I sbf'd it. darn it. hope my sd card didn't get erased, I will be mad with myself if I did.)
well I just bought my photon 20 days ago from a guy on craigslist and yes it was brand new, never activated everything sealed for 250.
And so far the only thing I wasn't able to do was the update which a lot of people couldn't get their phones to update but I used the 198_7 SBF and that was it.
So far I only had 2 reboots (and that was when I was messing around with root explorer replacing some apks in the system folder)
But besides that I haven't had any problems that aren't normal on any android phone.
I read a few posts in other forums about bad batteries causing some of the problems we are facing. Therefore, I called Motorola and they are sending me a new battery for FREE! I pray this fixes everything. (fingers crossed)

So, yesterday morning this all went down. My Rezound has been nothing but an expensive paperweight. I am not new to the rooting game so save the nonconstructive comments.
Early Monday morning I felt the need to change things up a bit so I wanted to flash the latest CleanRom 3.7 to check it out (coming from BAMF v.09). I backed up all my apps & data and continued to make a nandroid backup (with Amon_Ra 3.14). After that, I completed the necessary wipes (including boot because Scott packages his roms with the kernel) in recovery and then flashed CleanRom 3.7 (MD5 sum matched) then booted into bootloader to flash the kernel. Everything went perfect with that.
After the phone booted I realized how low on battery I was on but connected to Wi-Fi during the initial start-up on the new rom. I got all my accounts and data synced/restored and was getting ready to knock out. I set my alarm, placed the phone on the wall charger and confirmed it was charging by the orange light around 3am.
I woke up yesterday morning around 7:30am and realize I'm running late. I pick up my phone to see if the time is correct and I get nothing but a black screen. Pulled the battery...nothing...plugged in the phone without the battery..then plugged in the battery...nothing. On my 45 minute commute to work I removed the battery and let the phone sit (hoping some magic would happen lol) and nothing changed.
When I made it to my office, I plugged the phone in to see if it would accept a charge and 2 hours later nothing. I have the 3.7v battery and have had no indications of a bad battery (short life, warm, etc.). Due to the circumstances, I was left with no choice but to go to the local VZW and order a replacement.
The guy at the Verizon store plugged my phone in the wall charger and saw it was not accepting a charge. Swapped the battery with his own personal Rezound and mine worked in his, however, his fully-charged battery would not work in mine. Narrowed it down to the phone itself which blows. I thought at worst it would be the battery.
I am really curious how/why this all went down of all times when I wasn't doing anything to my phone. You guys/gals have any idea?

My bad..I forgot to mention I have been running Amon_Ra from the start. I've never ran CWM on my Rezound and I did run across some threads regarding the charging issues associated with CWM.
Thanks though!
Did you check the pins on the inside of the phone for the battery? Any scratches or rust?
This is exactly why I stay on GB and GB Kernels.
I experienced non-charging on two different ICS ROMs at seemigly random times. Sometimes just on the 3.8v. Once on the 3.7v. Going back to GB, then back to ICS temporarily resolved the issue.
One of the 10 reasons I tell people not to go ICS with this phone yet.
Get back on GB and your phone may well be just fine.
That's where my money is.
Ineffabilis with the 2.011.xxx kernel and radio is winning still.
If you flash leaks this is what happens. Live and learn this phone does not have soff so mistakes can cost you a phone

It may depend on how you're charging. The charging process requires some intelligent oversight - if you power off the phone, and connect a charger, the process is controlled by code loaded from somewhere. I think that code is in, or loaded by, the recovery. That would tend to explain things like this, this, this, and this.

I see this happen a few times. I can assure any one reading this it was coincidental that it happened after the ROM was flashed. If not there would be about 5,000 bricks out there with my name on it.
I think you had some bad luck man. It happens. My boss at work just ordered a brand new 1TB HD. Hooked it all up in his new rig and it would be seen by BIOS. Had to RMA it back to new egg.
I just put together a killer i7 system. Insane specs, water cooler, the whole nine yards. It had a 2GB GeForce Ti GTX 560 OC in it... Died within 2 weeks. That was a $300 card. Within the first couple days it started hard locking my computer. This was all on a fresh build mind you. Then after a week and a half the screen would lock and turn pink... Thats when I was positive it was video.
Replaced it and all was well.
Im just trying to illustrate that hardware failure can happen at the least opportune times. In other words, **** happens.

I assessed your OP as related to a phone not charging.
I see what you mean, now. My points were in the case of non-charing, or failure to charge (and a phone going dead on the charger) which aren't things I've seen on any stock-based ROM, but very much so on ICS ROM's (and Kernels, as such).
I bid you good luck on your replacement hardware. Stuff happens!

I understand Scott. I am in now way shape or form saying flashing your ROM was the reasoning behind all this as I have flashed numerous times before this and had no issues. Also, considering I am one of the very few this has happened to, i think its pretty obvious this was a hardware failure. I
I'll be running your roms soon enough
Thanks to everyone providing insight on this situation. I'll be back at it again very soon!
I am not a newbie to rooting or at least I think that
But, my EVO 3d has been acting very wierd since rooting in december. I used the HTC method with hboot 1.5 and used reliable roms (infected, miui, mikrunny)
It has never been the same, I have to periodically reflash new roms because the phone would freeze up, ghosts start typing on the touchscreen, certain part of the screen I can't touch, pressing power button would wake the phone and start the music
I have used various recoveries (twrp 1, twrp 2.0, twrp touch, cwm 4, cwm 5, cwm touch) with most stable being twrp 1 except for the fact that turning off the phone and restarting it causes it to be stuck on the HTC splash screen.
Just to explain the severity of the situation, the volume and power button have almost been fully pressed inside the phone from starting recovery and bootloader menus, the back case tabs are broken
I am soo bogged down with the phone, that I just want STOCK HTC software with 100% reliability and nothing else.
Sounds like your digitizer is going. I had the same problem. Bring it in and they will either replace the digitizer or the phone.

Just take it to sprint, its your digitizer, I had to have mine replaced saturday.! Its simple and those ppl at sprint barely know what rooting is, let alone what an unlocked bootloader or custom rom is.... js!

OK. This might sound like a dumb question... But when was the last time you pulled the battery and left it out for thirty seconds? An all voltage clear is sometimes all it takes. Also... Do you use a screen protector?

personal experience
I had the same problem with the ghost typing. the problem was the digitizer. If you have insurance on the phone then set it back to a stock ruu and bring the phone in to sprint. this is what i did and i got a new phone overnited and had it the next day.
Its as I feared I dropped my phone in water like a month after I got it on launch day, I just didnt want any bias if I told you guys first.
BUT the problem was NEVER there when I had stock HTC, it only started after rooting since december, where can I buy this digitizer?
I do have a screen protector so I'll remove that and put a new battery in, maybe it'll fix the problem

that literally is what happend to me. all was well for a little bit but then it got out of control. Good thing I got it at BBY Mobile and they got it replaced with a new one. Luckily it had HBOOT 1.4

Update: I have taken off the screen protector and there was some water left in it
I have installed a new battery too and most of the ghost touching problems have gone away.
But I have a new issue, I cannot get any rom to reboot for some reason, I have tried all the recoveries (ext4, twrp, cwm) I have to flash boot.img from fastboot if I want to load the rom after turning off the phone. Is there a solution for this problem?

You sure? It could be one of the ghosts doing it.

So I flashed back into gb with the latest GB RUU it finished fine but... afterwords I entered Hboot and bam it turned off, Never to be awakened again. I have 2 batteries I tried and nothing tried adb reboot, still nothing. So I called vzw and I'm getting a "replacement". This will be my third rezound lets hope it works fine. anyone else have any stories for me while I wait for my phone to arrive?...
No, first phone works great right out of the box.
Via my HTC Rezound
Never had a single problem but maybe because mine was made in September which was likely one of the first productions
Proximity Sensor Died
Had my Rez for around 4 months. Noticed in the last week or so that the screen never shut off during a call. Rolled back to the latest GB RUU and relocked the phone. Tested again and still a no go.
Spoke with Verizon and they sent out a replacement. This one has another issue with the proximity sensor. Right after I dial, the screen goes black. Have to keep hitting the power button to wake the screen when I take it away from my head. Unless I have the phone tilted toward a light, the proximity sensor turns the screen off during calls. This one also has pink buttons.
Guess I'll be getting back with Verizon shortly...
You did check to make sure the sensor is not blocked right?
Blow it with some canned air. Lint gets in the way all the time.

One of mine had that problem too so I doubt it's because of lint. I'm on my 4th Rezound now!

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me with my original Rezound as I was trying to prepare it to send back to Verizon. Originally the screen just died, so I was using fastboot to restore to its original ROM and recovery, and somewhere along the process the Rezound just decided to die completely. Charge LED never illuminated again, and I couldn't get it to turn on at all after that. Oh well, it was on its way back to Verizon anyways.
First phone purchased on Cyber Monday, sent out December 15th when it came back in stock on AmazonWireless. It was January or February when the USB port just gave out, no charging or data flow at all. Had to get a CLN. Both with pink keys and light leak on the bottom >.<
im on my first, soon to be second. the big crack ive had for a month now is getting on my nerves. time to call up the insurance....
Still my first.

Same here, jeez what the hell you guys do to your phones?
So it turns out my rezound is some type of vampire. it wouldnt turn on even to hboot so the battery was out while I was at work. I jokingly put the battery in and it booted to hboot. I'm still gonna get a replacement though. I just don't get what would cause it to not boot for a day.

Did you try blowing it out? Otherwise, you wouldn't know. HTC phones are notorious for this.

got me. Still on my first, gets a little warmer than I would like (130) but hate to replace it just to get a phone with new problems.

Here's my sad story. I spent a good 3 - 4 days getting my rezound working on CleanROM. It was not easy; re locking, downgrading the main very files, wiping, flashing Ruu, wiping again, flashing CleanROM, and so forth.
The next day I was charging it, and noticed it was hot at the plug (USB port) I re plugged in the charger and the heat was gone, as was the charge. Long story short, the USB port was fried. I called Verizon and they sent me a new one.
I was just about to start rooting it when I noticed the touch screen was not responsive in one area (an inch above the bottom of the phone).
It was at this point my wife ask when I would just stop with this phone and get an iPhone, b/c it just works. I won't go into the fight that ensued :-$.
So after proving to big red that it was not due to an application I installed, they agreed to send me a new new one (which I'm writing to you on now)
So far, so good. Fingers crossed.
I'll probably try rooting this guy tomorrow. Wish me luck .

I am expecting my 4th Rezound in a little over two weeks. Each one was not able to lock onto a 3G signal not to mention 4G. And after the 3rd Rezound they sent me a Razr Maxx with the same issue, did not like the Maxx any way. They and I are scratching our heads on how unlucky it has been. Before you say anything, yes all setting were correct, I even stop using custom roms and either way 4 phones with signal issues yet my ole Fassy still locks onto a 3g.

You sure it's not a bad SIM card? That would explain having the issue across two different phones.

My 2nd, the first had some bad screen tearing so I went and exchanged it, have been using this one for a couple of months now

Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Today while using my phone in different apps the phone would suddenly stop recognizing touch input and while I wasn't touching it the apps would behave as if someone was touching it all over. I'd try exiting the app, but the capacitive buttons would not function. I hit the power button and when I came back from the lockscreen I was able to exit and everything worked for a while. Then it started happening again. I did a restart and it was still happening. Turned the power completely off, left it for a while, and then turned back on and haven't noticed it again, but haven't been using it much.
I've been on meanrom for a couple days and this just happened today. Anyone else experience something like this? I'm hoping it doesn't happen again and if it does that it isn't a hardware issue. A real downer if I have to flash it again because I just got everything the way I like it, but I'd rather do it again than have to send it for repair.
Could be the kernel, are you using an overclocked kernel?
Yes, I believe meanrom comes with an overclocked kernel. I would get the non-overclocked version if I could, but that doesn't seem to be an option. I'd ask about the issue in the rom thread, but I can't yet.

Some kernels undervolt as a way to conserve power, they use other tricks like predetermined voltage stepping and may have modified governors as well. Any one of those can cause issues with hardware, then again it could be a simple ground issue with you phone. Have you tried pressing the edges of the screen? It may not be sitting correctly, the og EVO screens would have issues with grounding when the screens for what ever reason would start lifting.
Ah, thanks! I'll give that a try.
Seriously you guys are freakin awesome. And so fast. Thank you! XDA is lucky to have you guys. Glad I joined. :victory:

Sounds like a digitizer issue to me.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
That may very well be the case but, digitizer issues can still be attributed to a ground fault, undervolting or voltage stepping. I'm sure op will let us know, I too am leaning towards hardware failure though
Bad news. I tried one of the developer tools that shows a line for pointer location. It appears I have a dead zone. I had tested out this tool before and it was a constant line, but now it always skips over the same spot (a horizontal strip). It came back briefly, but now it seems to be really dead.
I might try a full wipe and flashing another rom, but this does seem to be a hardware issue. Really disappointed since I just got the phone. It never got rattled or dropped or anything. I guess I'll have to go for repair, but anyone know if there's a chance that I can get the repair guy to leave s-off? Also through TEP there shouldn't be a deductible for repair, right?
Thanks again om4 and bigdaddy619 for all the assistance.
A lot of sprint repair centers no longer work on damaged screens. They don't have any legitimate reason not to either. Sucks to have to get it replaced

Had to get a replacement, but figured out why the Sprint centers don't do screen repairs anymore. According to the repair person at the store I went to, the insurance felt there was some fraud going on with the employees selling screen parts. Apparently there is a big market for smartphone screen parts. So the policy is that phones must be sent in for a refurbished replacement if the problem is with the screen. Since mine was new though, I got a new replacement.
I was told that it was due to the overall cost....what you said makes way more sense. Way to go dbags, making things so much more complicated for regular customers
