How do you remove the back cover on a Transformer Prime (TF201).
I'd like to remove it temporarily to see if that improves GPS performance.
I'd wait. I recall reading that people had GPS until the latest firmware update and that makes me believe this is a software issue.
Didn't iFixIt or someone do a tear down? I could swear I saw a picture with at least the back cover off in some article explaining the locations of the wifi antennas. Maybe it was anandtech?
If it improves GPS signal would you drill holes on the back cover, around the gps module? If so how would go about sealing the hole, thermal paste or something? Maybe ceramic thermal paste, not metallic, and drill lots of small holes like a speaker grill and spread it evenly so that it fills the holes (that's what she.. eh)... that might not be too ugly actually. it'd still be water resistant, and would not take up any extra bulk.
Let me know how that goes, my gps strength is pretty lacking.
edit: I didn't see it on ifixit, but I saw this article... not crazy informative, but maybe some of the pictures could be useful.
First, take your crazy pill. Then, when you're sufficiently crazy, get a flat-tip screwdriver and start prying.

Thanks guys!
I'm probably not going to do it because I can still return the unit and I don't want to do anything to risk that or to void the warranty. I am hoping that someone with real skill and adequate resources is willing to try it...like say AnandTech or Engadget.

Not to sound snobbish, but it's what separates the talker from the do'er. You can wait and hope for somebody else to do it for you, or you can do it yourself.
Opening up consumer electronics (CE) is not a big deal. Remember, these things need to be serviceable by techs, meaning they are designed to be opened.
There are tools for the task. You can go fancy, like this $60 toolkit, or you can go cheap with this $3 kit. They work the same way.

Most CEs have two shell halves that are held together by (hidden) screws, plastic clips, soft glue, or a combo thereof. The key is to know how they go together. Find this out by watching teardown of similar devices. Next is to know how to pry them open without scarring the lips. That's why tools (they're called spudgers) are made of soft plastic.
The trick is to find a soft spot along the seam where you can force a crease with the guitar-pick tool above. Then push a wedge tool into the crease, and run it along the seam.
You don't have to have these tools. With some imagination, you can find substitutes around the house.
The other thing is to take things slow. If you go fast, you may snap off some of the plastic clips, if those are used. If enough break off, but you may have to use soft glue when putting it back together.
Lastly, go to the iFixit site and take a look at how the pros do it. The Prime is like the iPad (but is probably easier to disassemble), so watch the iPad teardown. Also, go to Youtube and search for teardowns of various phones. Suggest getting your feet wet with a cheap MP3 player.
Pragmatically, only try this while within the return period. If you screw up, you can still return it, but you probably can't RMA it. Also, it does require some mechanical aptitude along with some dexterity. If you're of the hammy-handed sort, then yes, wait for somebody else to take up the task.
Complete iPad teardown series

This.
It's really not as difficult as you would think to take apart these sorts of devices. You will probably have to make a few runs to the electronics store for small electronics tools. Especially if the manaf feels the needs to use some highly unused type of screw head in a ridiculously small form factor... Sony Ericsson...
However, I wouldn't take my skills for a test run on your ASUS Prime. If you do screw up, you'll be sweating buckets.
However if you don't, you wouldn't be the first, and especially not the last to return an item they completely dismantled. I've personally done it quite regularly [;
Pro-Tip: The guys working RMA are hardly able to catch freshly dismantled and reassembled OEM hardware, so people working returns/exchanges at retail are DEFINITELY not going to catch it.
You might find the TF101 tear down procedure useful.
Here is a thread that describes the procedure

Thanks for the excellent information. I'm now totally convinced that I will let the pro's do this and not take a chance on messing up my chances for an RMA or return.

Just a quick post to show the results of my first attempt at a smart cover-like 'case' for my grab using some 1/2" tubing, card stock, magnets and fabric. A more complete instructions will be posted on my blog later this week. I'll edit with a link when its up.

Nice work. I will be anxious to see your write up on this one.
Wow! You must be good with a sewing machine. That looks almost good enough to be an OEM accessory. Are you going to provide plans/instructions or are you going to make these to sell?
Thanks guys. I will be providing instructions, dimensions, anything else I can to help. I think I can get the hinge side working with magnets like the clasp side is now. New revision and both write ups should come this weekend.
While I have it open I'm going to see if adding a magnetic on/off is feasible.
Looks nice. I may try to make one too. Check this app for auto sleep: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978068
or
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.killswitch
I have killswitch installed but even setting sensitivity to 1% I still get some false triggers which wouldnt be too bad if the 'delay before dialog' worked. It comes up immediately no matter what delay I select.
Maybe pm ftgg99 who started that other thread on it. Looked like some people had it working on gTab's.
I am thinking about ordering some small magnets to play around with making a cover like this. http_www_amazon_com/Disc-Package-Earth-Neodymium-Magnets/dp/B000LZIOZC/
Yup, small neodymiums. I tried putting metal shims inside and magnets in the cover but the metal had to be trimmed so narrow to fit with the case closed that the bond was weaker than what would be required. I am going to open it up again tonight and try to fit the magnets on the inside. That way I can use the entire width of the hinge to increase thee surface are of contact, should be plenty strong. It will also make for a cleaner appearance.
I haven't opened mine yet. Is there much space inside on that edge? The magnets i got are 1/8" x 1/16" or about 3mmx1.5mm
How does it attach to the G-Tab?
Will it stand up in the higher angle mode?

It attaches with the tubing. I cut it down the middle.
It should stand in the higher angle mode but I need to adjust the spacing of the cover panels.
Is there any update on this cover? It looks pretty sweet.
I was able to embed a 2 magnets in the case. I had to shave them down a bit and it was a tight fit, but it closed up pretty good. I tested placing metal strips in the cover but needed the strength of additional magnets in the cover (obviously paying attention to polarity with relation to the tablet magnets). If you plan it right it will only go on one way. It is pretty secure for most uses, but it still does not hold the entire weight of the tablet. I was hoping it could hang on a metal surface but there is no way I would trust it. Any bump and it would be on the ground.
Bump, come on, I would love something like this. Stop holding onto your secrets!
Have you considered using the dock connector instead of magnets to secure the cover to the tablet?
Progress?
Where are the instructions? I reeeeeeeeeeeealllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyy want to do this.
Instructions??
When are the instructions coming??
Keen as to make it.
Hey, where are the instructions
So many people make these nice devices and promise us instrcutions but don't deliver
(hoping to get some sympathy lol)
Please post the isntructions.

I have access to a fabricator and could probably come up with a high-quality plastic back cover. I don't want to waste my time or yours if people aren't interested. Assume somewhere between $50-75 uninstalled and about $15 if you want to send it in and have a done by a h/w engineer (yes, I have access to those too). The more people order the cheaper they would be - the $'s above are based on about 100 people.
Some questions:
1) What color should the back be and why?
2) Should the back have matching metal ornamentation so it looks cool with the dock? This would be more $'s
3) Do you think the majority would DIY or want it done by a tech?
Can't promise anything but I'd certainly look in to it if there's enough demand.
If confirmation occurs, count me in.
if asus don't come up with a fix and it came to this (which i don't think it will) i would definitely want a clear back. would looks so awesome

You actually made me think of something. Maybe the whole back doesn't need to be replaced. Perhaps just a fairly large cut out with a plastic insert. I guess it depends how much clearance there is between the back and the components and where the antennas are located. I don't know how feasible it is to try and cut aluminium but I'll ask.
I'd be in provided it's confirmed that fixes the issue. Clear would be slick, but I'm not picky.
I would definitely be interested in this. You could make an entire market out of this. "Custom Transformer Backs." I'm still interested to see whether ASUS will handle this on their own however. If they don't, I doubt you'll have many customers with Transformer Primes in order to sell them.

Imo a clear cut out would be even slicker than a full replacement back if improvements were equal

But a full back replacement would be better if folks ever have to return prime for future issues? Could just put the old back on before returning
What if you just cut a round circle out of the back of the aluminum where the Asus logo is and install some plastic cover with an Asus logo on it. I think this could be a DIY, type of thing. Seller ships instructions on how to take backplate off, a template of where exactly to cut out and then have a plastic piece to install it. Or make it simple, and and replace the whole back plate.
If you can make it! Please make it right!! I'm willing to pay $75 if you can make it fiberglass (Gray) as bugatti car

to the best of my knowledge, the antennas are just to the left and right of the FRONT-FACING camera. Yes, front-facing. This is how wifi is even able to work.
I don't know where the GPS antenna is located.

bottom right if im not mistaken saw it on the transformer tear down but im just not in for this too risky to do this to my device, great idea hope it works out for you but just not for me unless it was a clear backing and we threw some LEDS on the side like some red ones then we have a clear back the glows red that i would pay like 100 for
I'm in for $75
Demonstrate that plastic improves receptivity, make it clear, emboss it with XDA so it's a collector's item (like my 2 OG Droids), and I'm in.
Get Samsung to sell it, and I'll give you $100. ;-)
I was thinking like a flat black, but a clear back would look pretty sweet too. Once a Guinea pig or two tried it out, posted pics & real world experience, I might be game

I've seen that before - when I was building my own projector. It could be a bent ffc cable. You might want to crack it back open and verify they are all properly seated in their slots and nothing is pressing against them.
Hope that helps!

I re-opened the case. There does not appear to be anything bent or pressing up. Even the case loose, the screen is still like that. I've tried slightly pressing anything with cables attached and the picture does not flicker.

Wow, that much damage? It appears as though there is a crack on the LCD not the glass, as I can not see the crack when the prime is off. Originally I used a plastic prying tool that I bought online for this purpose, but it broke within minutes. I then used a small screwdriver and pried the case enough to get a fingernail wedged in between, then I inserted a credit card and pried all around the unit. I didn't realize I have done that much damage (cracked LCD and potentially a broken ribbon). I guess my loss should serve as a warning to others.
To be honest, the only reason why I wanted to open the case was to get better wifi coverage. I use the unit a lot for note taking and for the brower when at work. My co-workers with other tablets are able to find wifi networks that I can't, and I was getting a bit frustrated by the Prime.
Now that mine is broken, I can honestly say, I won't be buying another Asus tablet to replace it. With the poor handling of the wifi (saying that it works enough), GPS (removal of the spec), and the few apps that crashed my prime (like World Series of Poker and Where's waldo to name a couple). It has honestly made me rethink the entire Android platform.
I may throw my chips into a Win 8 pro tablet after a few months of it's release, and I don't want an Ipad. I guess I'll be back to using my laptop for now.
Thanks All for the help.
At least someone who has bricked their unit but has a good screen might be interested in buying. Bad luck, but it does show how careful you need to be when opening devices.
Perhaps the LCD is not cracked, just looked again.
The construction of the Prime is quite poor. Did you by chance start opening it from the bottom and not the side? I recall a while back someone wrote about damaging their ribbon cable like that.
Really looks like a cracked LCD.
Cracked mine while trying to replace the glass at the bottom left and the entire screen went kaput, but here it's more centered and it works on the left side prior to what looks like a crack at the bottom. did you first insert the screwdriver right over the right dock mounting point?
I've seen people using putty knives (putty spreading tools used in construction) to open larger panels with success. they're thin and durable- perfect for the job.
Sad to see another prime go like that If only they had LCD's for sale..... I couldn't find one for mine
So upon searching and searching I found a few bumpers made for the moto 360. This company is a 3d printing service that creates sells and ships based on customer code.
They have 2 different style cases for the g watch. One with a cover and one without. I think if the cover is fully removable and looks good I'd want that. I seem to cross my arms a lot and tend to wake up the watch. But not to the point battery life is affected. A matte screen protector works just fine.
Check this out. Let me know if you have one or order one. The plain black looks reasonably priced. Wish there were real photos.

Not for me but it sure reminds me of the old Swatch guards lol!
Looks like the design was updated a bit.
Looking at the dimensions though, the case is actually quite thin, and doesn't increase the footprint of the watch very much.
The developer just updated the design of both models with and without covers. I am probably going to order black strong and flexible with the removable cover! Here is a photo he sent of the actual finished product (before revisions so current one will be even better)
I kinda want to see what that looks like on the watch. Is the watch screen easy to scratch and break?
I have had my watch for a week or two. It's got a screen protector. It's probably not going to break as it's secured to wrist. But I'm afraid I'll scuff the frame from a door or something.
I would never put such a monstrosity on my watch.
Ok. So the revision should arrive to the designer around January 14th. I will share any information as it arrives. So I would say my full review should be no later than the end of January.
If you are in a hurry and don't want to wait, just go ahead and order one. $17.99 with shipping for the latest version with the removable cover in Blue Strong & Flexible.
If you can wait, I would try to hold off for 1 month just in case it needs any more tweaking.

I am so happy (for the sake of the developer) that I'm not the only one excited!
I would order one but the one with the cover has required extra adjustments. If I didn't need the cover I would have pulled the trigger.
The cover is removable. I just want extra display protection and the ability to have my watch vibrate without others being able to see it. This case bypasses the theater mode bug.
It will be like Christmas all over again. As promised to the developer, I will be doing a full review here, on a few other forums, and on YouTube. As for the time frame, I would say a week after the revision is inspected by the developer, so the 21st of January.
Ehhhh....Try Again
Really not what I expected. It is very light, yet feels very cheap. It falls off all the time. I take off my sweatshirt and it gets stuck in the sleeve and comes off. Next time, make one that wraps all the way around.
One thing i do like about it is that you cant even feel that its on there and now its harder for something to hit my screen....even though i already have some scratches.....
In my opinion, I would wait for an updated case... don't buy this one........
I placed my order yesterday for the latest revision, fully functioning, with cover. The main link posted here has been updated by the designer with photos. Just click through the colors.
I ordered the black detail. I am really excited.
@joedow325 maybe you could express your concerns to the designer. While I haven't personally used the product yet, it sounds like something I'd like still. I want it to be easily removable / interchangeable. And I don't really wear long sleeves that much. I dunno. I would think there could be a way to have a back snap on like a phone case. I wouldn't want any added thickness though. Millimeters start to add up ya know.

What is so ugly about it? Especially the one without the flip cover. It isn't like it makes the watch huge. Typical judgy people saying negative things before they even try once themselves. Just wait for my full review...

So I opened up my Nvidia shield tablet k1 today and saw that the internal stylus holder is actually still there. For the reason of budget costs I guess Nvidia decided to remove the "hole" that once let you sheath your stylus there. I havn't found any tutorials online that showed how to cut a decent sized hole to let the stylus rest in. So I guess I'll ask.... has anyone done it before successfully here?

I've done something similar with a dremel and a couple of files in the past. It's something I plan on doing on my K1 now that I have a brand new device to play with.
Considering the the age of the device, I doubt anyone has tried this out yet.
Drilling a hole in the side of the tablet seems extreme. I have been searching for a case that might be able to hold the styles as well but with no luck. I have flip cover for the k1 and have been trying to think of a good idea as how to stow the styles on to it. For example if I had a piece of stretchy material that I attached to the cover somehow I could slide the styles into the makeshift pocket and it could hold the styles when not in use.
Would I be right in thinking that the back cover of the older model would fit the newer one? Seems like it would be a nicer solution than drilling and cutting. You could possibly even get some of the missing internal components that way. Just need to find a broken 2014 tablet.
If this fails you can always do what I plan on doing in case this proves to be futile. Attach magnets to either like on the Surface Book. On a side note: The back cover already is "precut", as is the whole stylus mounting hole as seen here:
That is really interesting! They kept costs low by using the same molds to create the plastic parts.
A quick question seeing as you've opened your back cover already: is there a button/mechanism in the stylus groove that could potentially detect if a stylus is removed? Just wondering if they still left that in there (hopeful thinking! )

Sadly that module is missing, so no hopes there. The speaker cable is also in the way and has to be taped down or something to the frame if you want to fit the stylus later on.
I knew it was unlikely but thought it was worth checking.
At least there's a place to store a stylus (although after drilling into the tablet).
Guys....I did it. I just used a file and filed away, put the cover back on, and inserted the stylus. It's perfect. I would take a picture but I don't have a camera.

Tablet + Mirror.
Sorry, could not resist pointing out the lack of a camera irony whilst talking of a device with 2 built in.
I will admit that probably wouldn't make come out at a good enough angle to show the work well, but hope you got a quick chuckle.

post memes and op will give chuckles.
Please teach me how to do dis... Going to buy the stylus soon...
I just read this and thought I'd pop open my K1 to see for myself. Yep. It's there. Wow.
I'd drill a hole in mine too but I have two problems:
1. That cable.
2. Dust/Water etc.
Sent from my SM-G935V using XDA-Developers mobile app
Anyone drilled and try to make use of the stylus slot?
care to share some finished image?
would definitely like to see how it goes.
I "drilled" a hole also, the stylus sticks perfectly, but there was a cable in the way. just som sticky thingy to hold the cable and youre done

I did that too. Used some files and some crazy glue (for the cable). Works great. I have some pictures here http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/general/modding-directstylus-slot-shield-k1-t3408090

I would probably cover the ribbon with tape to prevent the stylus from sliding on the cable over time. Kapton tape would be the tape to use. How did you shape the notch in the back cover. Also when filing the metal area for the cable did you not worry about filings getting on the mainboard.

The cable is covered in a mixture of super glue and fine powder. No worries about shavings since I worked under constant airflow from the mainboard side to blow dust and shavings away
As for shaping the notch I used some jewelers files that had the right curve to them.
Stylus sensor can generally be found with 'nvidia shield digitizer' on ebay - sellers currently parting out new original style tablets - not real cheap, but you get a spare digitizer!

But why would they leave the whole circuit and components for the sensor if the sensor is not there...
They did 2 things to the main board a radio microcode update and the sensor removed from assembly any capacitors or resistors on the pen sensor circuit should also be left out... In addition they do have 2 different updates for the 2 tablets I imagine the k1 does not have the sensor as an active element...
That said i dont see that there is a whole lot of extra functionality given aside from auto wake on pen removal....
