Samsung galaxy S2 EFS Folder - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung Galaxy S II with lost IMEI & unknown baseband, ( the source of such a problem usually is the corruptness of the efs folder or missing ), My question is if the efs folder is missing would it be possible to use another backup from another backup of the efs folder from different S2 and edit in the details needed?

You can restore from your backed up EFS folder .
Or search XDA >>> EFS will find a number of posts and some fixes .

Hi mate, I don't have a backup of the folder so can't restore

no, you can not use a efs from another phone as the imei is unique to each phone. you would end up bricking it.
You need to send it in for reflashing with specialized tools which will rebuilds your efs folder.

I have the same problem here.. any idea how to rebuild the efs folder?

Theres also a Dev called Odia that can restore lost EFS/IMEI folders.Costs i think but its worth it if you cant get it done yourself.Send him a PM.

Solution
I managed a solution to get your phone back, not perfect but works.

Cant understand why people do not make a backup of the EFS. If they all took the time to read the stickies, they would know how important this is. Learn to walk before you start to run.

That's assuming they indeed read the stickies, of course.

Reading
Read Stickies is important, but sometimes there are procedures that don't work well, or as expected, so problems like this will appear and they must have a solution.

restore with a backup folder!

You may not of personally made a backup but a lot of roms and kernels do it for you automatically, so you may have one or more backups and not even know it.
Check if you have one in /data/.siyah if you have used said kernel.
Check your sdcard for any made by roms they usually make a folder named something like efs_backup
Last I looked in addition to the backup I made 5 minutes after buying the phone I have 20+ made from each rom upgrade.

Hi, I'm new to rooting etc. Is it too late to backup an efs folder after I rooted the phone but have done nothing else?
Cool

As long as your EMS folder is intact and IMEI is correct, its not too late. There are a number of apps and programs to backup your imei. Ktool is one of the best and simplest to use. Also try EFS pro.

Mate when people buy a phone, they don't expect that their phone's EFS will get meshed up. In my case I have Galaxy S and my wife has Galaxy S2. She has been using her phone for year and half, no major problem. Last week it suddenly lost the network connection. I tried different SIM but still no good and started searching to resolve the issue and I found how to access IMEI. It was empty. She didn't do anything, no new apps installed. Mobile service provider can't help..

[Q] GT-I9300 Missing IMEI and EFS

Hi guys,
I have searched high and low for this issue. I have found a lot of forums on how to fix the problem but none of them pertain to my circumstances. I installed Omega ICS ROM v 13.1 a week or two ago. I then decided to install Omega JB v18. I then upgraded to Omega JB v21 as well. In preparation for the official Samsung JB ROM, I went back to ICS. I started by downgrading to Omega v13.1 ICS followed by stock Samsung ICS ROM I9300XXALE8. A couple of days after doing this, all of a sudden, whilst on a call, I lost signal and then the stop sign icon appeared in the top toolbar. I have no radio, no wifi, no bluetooth and no lock screen & power menu. After all of the reading I have done, I have managed to discover that my EFS has disappeared. I have rooted the phone and installed ES File explorer and have looked inside the EFS folder only to find that it is blank. I did have a Nandbackup but managed to delete it in my attempts to recover my phone (yes I know im stupid but I didnt realise the significance of the backup until I realised what was missing!!). So, no EFS backup. Seemingly nothing in the EFS folder on the phones root. Any help would be greatly appreciated. One thing I did notice, which I am sure is significant in some way, is that when I put Omega JB on it, my sdcard mounted as "sdcard0" or something along those lines. Again, because I am fairly new to the custom ROM world, I didnt realise the significance of this until I had down graded back to ICS.
Please help!!!!
Thanks again.

If you do not have backup of efs folder. You have no chance of getting imei back.
You can go to service centre for rebuilding efs folder.

Flashing any roms can destroy the EFS thats why its always rule one to backup EFS folder . Multiple flashing up down up down increases the risk .
Did not Omega backup your EFS .
You say
have no radio, no wifi, no bluetooth and no lock screen & power menu
Thats not the signs of IMEI corruption as it plays no part in power menu or lockscreen .

I think that S3 has some problem in securing it's EFS folder.
I flashed my S2 with hundred's of roms and never faced this issue.
Secondly in my experience lock screen and power menu is efs folder issue.

A reminder about 2 things:
1) swapping/changing/etc IMEI's is illegal
2) giving someone else your EFS folder wont work, your phone will just default to the generic IMEI which is normally no better.

Hey. This is one of the things I had read about and tried and it came back with nothing. I don't recall the error message but I think it said it couldn't find the partition or folder or something. I am certain that it has to do with Omega Jb and the fact that it installed and mounted sdcard as sdcard0 and somehow, when going back to omega ics, this has occurred. Another thing I have just now remembered is that I had also setup a swap partition on my ext sdcard and had it mounted. This was all working fine for a few days though so I don't see how that caused it. Was really odd. Anyways, thanks for all the help, but I am going to pay for it to be repaired.

Imei NULL/NULL - EFS Folder Lost.
Hi, I have a i9300 which lost efs folder, already tried restoring it through the box octopus, but at the time of writing the imei, it reports the error. (Write imei fail). Anyone have any idea what I can do?

IMEI question

Is there a chance of getting IMEI corruption when upgrading from AOKP/ICS to AOKP/JB ?
I had this problem when upgraded my Captivate from ICS/SLIM to JB/SLIM
I thought the only time your IMEI was in any danger was during an unofficial unlock process. A ROM shouldn't mess with that data. I haven't seen any reports of ANY ROMs hurting the IMEI. I went back and forth from GB to ICS to JB a few times without issue.

The IMEI should be stored in /efs (I think) so as long as you have a backup of that you should be fine.

I may be wrong but my guess is they had to change the filesystem from rfs to mtd for jellybean on the cappy. It allows bigger partitions, but efs gets misplaced during conversion. I don't think this was ever an issue on s2.

I derped my IMEI on my S3 so I have done a lot of reading about it. This is what I have gathered, the S2 keeps it in a nice neet little folder called the EFS as d3athsdoor has mention. There are several ways to back it up but for the S2 I have read that this https://play.google.com/store/apps/....ktool&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd works nicely and can be restored with the same app. On the S3 the IMEI and other important data hasn't been confirmed where it is stored yet because it is in different locations, But there are some really smart people looking for it. But in your case just back it up before you go to flashing (if you choose so). I have backed my S2 up with the Ktool app.
Def back it up, because if you mess it up you cant restore it without back up

So you were restoring nandroid backup and you lost your phone's IMEI? No never happened to me. But you should have made a backup for it dude!
Edit: Okay got it. Install Root Explorer pro and check whether the efs folder is there or not. Set the same permissions from another I9100 and then reboot. Set the same permissions for each file in that folder and the folder itself. If you have made a backup in the form of .tar file then use HC ktool to restore your efs folder. It would automatically set the permissions required!

no thats not what happened. I rooted my 4.0.4 using Odin and Siyah Kernel v5. Straight after rooting it, i downloaded GSII_repair from the app store and backed up my efs. Then i downloaded Titanium and backed up everything. Then i went to recovery mode and made a back up. I finally flashed the Resurrection ROM v3.1.3, i rebooted, everything was working fine, like imei was there and so was signal, i restarted my phone and my imei number went away, so i used the GSII_repair app to restore, it worked fine. I restarted my phone again, imei was gone yet again. So i decided to go back to my stock ROM back up, imei was gone, i restored, everything working fine now. Just not sure whats happening because i have rooted phones before and that has never happened to me, every time i restart, imei goes away, sometimes it comes back, sometimes it doesnt. What has happened? just reallly confused. i have a back up of my EFS though.

Oh man that is really heart wrenching. Atleast you made a backup before messing with your phone. Okay now can you restore your efs? If yes then restore it and download HC ktool and make another backup for it. Then restart your phone and if you lose it again then restore it using HC ktool. You can try EFS Pro from your PC as well.

I also lost my IMEI no after a flashing a rom, as far as I was aware I had never made a backup of my efs folder, I attempted many different methods to resolve this, then I checked my external SD storage and saw an EFS_BACKUP folder with numerous compressed EFS files, I simply selected one of the early ones copied to my desktop and extracted contents and used them to replace my current efs folder on root of the phone, then reboot and you should have your original IMEI and phone working again, hope this helps goodluck

I get your point but with your IMEI coming and going, it would point too corrupt efs files on the root of your phone, given you have tried various methods already, I would take a copy of the suspected corrupt efs folder save it onto your pc, then go back to the root folder and delete it, replacing it with one from your EFS_backup folder on your external SD, no need to edit any of the internal files or use any other software, simply reboot

Lost IMEI and efs folder R/O

Hi guys I'm having a strange problem with my sister's galaxy s2. For the second time she lost her IMEI without any reason (no flash ecc just turned off the phone and no IMEI when turned on). The last time I've been able to restore it and I made all the backups using efs pro, But this time when I try to restore it the procedure goes well but the imei is still missing. I tried to restore it manually and I discovered that for some reason the EFS folder is blocked on READ ONLY and I can't switch it in R/W. This problem is preventing me to restore the IMEI and I can't find any similar case on google. Can someone helps me with it?
Thank you a lot

Sure the phone is rooted. My situation is very strage. If I enter the EFS folder with root explorer and I click on "Convert to R/W" the folder remains R/O. Also if I try to cancel any file (or rename or move) in EFS folder nothing happes (that probabbly is what prevents EFS PRO from working). Is there any way to force that folder to be read/write or to cancel it? Maybe using adb shell from the pc?

People seem to have problems whenever they use EFS Pro. People should use kTool; seems to almost always restore without any problems.

Manually change/create efs file

Is it possible to create or change efs data manually
I do not have a backup and my IMEI is wrong
I have contacted samsung about repair awaiting response
In the meantime my wife has the same phone from same provider network etc.
If i were to make a backup of her efs could i manually edit it to mine and restore
I realise this topic will most likely be removed for the fact it is essentially asking how to change and IMEI but this is only illegal if you are changing it to another on your phone i am not
I am trying to restore it to its original device
From what i have seen so far this is only possible using a z3x box or similar tool at a cost of £95 for the box alone
No you can't use her efs. And no bkup you will have to send to service centre. Yes z3x works but cost is probably to much for one fix. Go to local shop could be cheaper as most use this or similar
I9100/I9300
You can get the imei issue repaired at a phone shop for £20. What you're suggesting isn't legally possible outside of the repair industry (I.e at home).
Or send to samsung if you haven't voided warranty already who will repair for free

Ok thanks guys was just a thought i have a few local shops i may take it tomorrow to have a look
One more question is it still possible to backup efs on new MG4+ firmwares as it is a new format is it still supported
As in if i get it repaired then i can make a backup for future use
Once repaired it will be "back up able" and restorable...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
Well i dropped it off at the shop this morning was advised it would cost £20 so i was happy with that
Now i just get a phone call asking if its ok to re-flash phone which im ok with as all my data is backed up
But re-flashing the phone is going to do nothing which leads me to believe this guy has no idea what he's doing.
Only thing i can think is that he cant access the IMEI under the MG4 structure and is flashing to a previous firmware
We will see
Well £20 down and my phone is back and working running UFMB3
Now i have made a backup using EFS Professional i should be safe to become flash happy again knowing i always have this to fall back on

Make a copy with ktool "app of playstore" make a copy with your recovery too and copy the efs folder completely and put it on an sdcard and put that in a safe place. Remember you can never have too many efs back ups. Glad you sorted it out

Good news. I recommend a few backups of efs. I have 3 at any one time.
If you want to use an mg modem without changing efs, theres a link in my thread. It also takes a backup of efs too.

I think we should frame this post as a banner at the top of the forum.

I have made backups using efs pro and ktool and uploaded them to my dropbox what did notice about both apps is they make the backup on the internal memory which will most likely be wiped when installing a new ROM but esily moved
I do appreciate the help and advise been flashing phones for years now this was my first hic-cup.
I'll have a look at your thread rootSU but just to be clear
MG4+ uses alternative file stucture and location (currently unknown) for efs partion
If this problem was to re-occur all i would need to do is restore phone to a Baseband Prior to MG4+ UFMB3 for example and restore efs from backup
Should do the trick...
