Nook shipped with 1.4.1 - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I've read all the tutorials I can find for downgrading and rooting the nook. Unfortunately the tablet seems to have come with 1.4.1 out of the box. I have 2 Micro SDcards:
Micro SDHC 16 GB Sandisk - Doesn't work
Micro SDHC 8GB Not sure of brand - Doesn't work
The tablet recognizes the sd cards, but it will not boot from the sd card. I can't get acclaim_update.zip to install off of either of these cards. My questions:
1. I have seen some threads say the type amd brand can matter. Does SDHC vs SD or one brand over another prove more reliable?
2. Could the fact that it shipped with 1.4.1 be part of the reason that I can't get it to roll back to 1.4.0?
I really like the tablet, and I really want to root and use it but so far no luck. For some unknown reason I returned a "defective" unit that came with 1.4.0, but could not contact B&N other than to register the tab. I should have kept and rooted that one once I got the wifi resolved, but live and learn...
Any help is appreciated!

Shipping the new tablets with 1.4.1 installed from the factory is probably B&Ns neutron bomb. Not sure if there is a fix for that yet.

Not 100% certain, but from what I've noticed so far, the 1.4.0 downgrade doesn't play nice with HC cards. You might want to try a non-high capacity card, and see if that works...

Sandisk 16GB should be fine

I think something else is wrong here; I have multiple 16GB Sandisk cards (which are one of the best choices), and the downgrade to 1.4.0 has worked multiple times. Try formatting the SDcard using the software that comes with the Nook Tablet, and then copying over acclaim_update.zip and rebooting. You may have to reboot a second time to get it to take.
Further, you are not booting from the SD card; that is not (yet) possible with the Nook Tablet.
Finally, the evidence I have seen is that (unlike with the Nook Color), once you update a device to 1.4.1, 1.4.1 becomes the factory recovery image, so the device is indistinguishable from a new one. I may be wrong on that, however.

You say "seems" not "did". Have you checked the device info to see which version it's running or are you assuming it is because of how it's behaving?

SanDisk works better mostly 2gb no problem. Did you try formatting the sd in the nook first?

I have tried to format the cards both in my pc and in the nook.
It's definitely running 1.4.1, I don't know if it shipped with 1.4.1 definitely but when I also recovered the tablet using the built in recovery and it went to 1.4.1.
I'll try a regular micro SD tomorrow. This would make me sad, I do like the tab otherwise.

Good luck!

Good News
I bought a PNY 8GB SDHC card today. It worked as a magic SD Card. I'm having a bit of a problem getting the N button to work again, but I'm sure I'll figure that out soon. So if my unit shipped with 1.4.1, either there was something on my old cards that prevented it from being used as a Magic SD card or those cards won't work for that purpose. Either way if I can get this bad boy rooted I will be the happiest camper I know!
Thanks all for helping me troubleshoot!

N button is working, 1.4.0 is installed, Magic Sd. card was put somewhere safe, and I'm watching the root tutorials now! Persistence pays off dividends most of the time! Best of luck on yours, mine cost me a few bucks extra but it was worth it in my eyes.

So, here's the rub when formatting your MicroSD from the computer; you must set the option "Allocation unit size" option to "32 kilobytes" and put nothing on the card other than the acclaim_update.zip. If you leave it set at the default allocation or anything other than 32 kb it will not work.

I also have a NEW tablet with 1.4.1
I have a new tablet with the 1.4.1 firmware. I never connected to B&N so I know it came that way out of the box. I had to search for a couple of hours before finding a way to skip the "Out of the Box Experience" and setup without connecting to B&N to register.
Does the fact that I have 1.4.1 installed mean I will not be able to root my tablet?
I should have bought one sooner and avoided this situation. Had I known that some Staples stores have them, I might have gone there for mine instead of ordering from B&N and perhaps getting a REALLY new tablet with the latest firmware.

fake or dodgy micro sd?

Hello,
I bought a 2GB Sandisk microSD today from a shop.
Upon inserting it into my hermes, it got stuck: the normal 'spring' action didn't work, and the more I pushed, the more the card slipped into the sd slot until it wouldn't go any further ...
I had to use a pin to slowly pry it out from the slot. Fortunately I got it out.
So did I get a dodgy / fake card?
I did notice that on the dummy microSD card that came with hermes, the front tip (the end that goes into the slot first) is narrower on both left and right side of the card than the back. While on the card I got today, only the left side is narrower; the right side is a straight flush line ... which smells fishy.
Should I return this? The shop keeper keeps saying it's the real thing ...
thanks
It'll loosen up. Mine did that too (on two different devices) for the first few times. BUT, SanDisk doesn't work in Hermes, so, take it back because of that. You need a JAPAN made MicroSD Card... There's a thread on this.

Same here, I have a 2GB SanDisk Micro for over 6mths now, fully utilised and works flawlessly. A lot of ppl bought same card from same place I did, and I haven't heard complaints.
And fits perfectly in my TyTN, from day one.
I'll be the third to say that I have never heard of nor have I ever had problems using my 2gb Sandisk in my Hermes.. Legolas, what are you smoking?
And if you could please provide a link to that thread, I would appreciate acquiring its knowledge.
I have 2 sandisk 2 gig both brought about 4 months apart from seperate suppliers both work fine.
SD Card problems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294324
Odd that you aren't seeing it.. On my two 8525, I can get the cards to disappear almost on demand.
It looks like mostly a Cingular ROM issue in that thread. Maybe that's why I don't have same problem, I've had my original TyTN ROM until I flashed to WM6 XDA Live 1.0, with which works fine too (not in a hurry to change to xda live 2.0, 1.0 so far works good for me).
I haven't had a single disappearance of my card and/or loss of a file since I bought the phone in Sept last year.
Yes, sandisk cards work fine. The issue with cards disappearing is a rom issue which will eventually be resolved. If you are using a stable rom you won't have a problem.
I've never had to force a card in the slot though!
problem "fixed"
Hi everyone,
Thanks for the replies.
FYI, I've "fixed" the insertion problem now: it seems that I need to be a little careful when inserting the card into the slot, and keep it a little more to the left and down.
The first time I inserted it, I pushed it in a little higher into the slot, which caused it to get stuck. So the problem doesn't occur now, though it does make me wonder why the slot was made with such loose tolerances (I'd expected the card to either go in or not; and if it does go in, the slot should be such that the card goes in without any need for the user to be 'careful').
And the Sandisk 2GB card reads / writes fine in my hermes. I'm using the latest 3.5 ROM from HTC.
cheers.
Changed from SanDisk to Kingston 2GB card. And the device works without any freezes. I guess the Hermes DOES have issues with the SanDisk cards. Only my opinion..
had some corrupt files on my 2gb storage card so i copied off the good stuff then reformated as fat32 alloc unit 512. copied files back on but now TomTom runs like a dog.
have i used the right settings for reformatting?
any other suggestions?

What rom? BL? Radio? etc..? What do you have on the card? Do you experience any issues where the phone goes to sleep and never wakes up until you soft-reset? Do you *ever* need to remove and re-insert the card?
Please, when you're posting information that you want to share with others, be DESCRIPTIVE! We'll never figure stuff out if all you contribute is, "Mine works".

AT&T Version -- SD Card not recognized?

I'm having a problem with my GS3 (US AT&T version) that I finally got my grubby paws on today. I bought the 32GB Samsung Class 10 metal MicroSD card for it from a legimate source, and verified its speed and function with H2testw.exe. It passed the tests, and both of my computers can see the card when plugged in through my card reader. It is already formatted as FAT32.
When I insert the card into my phone and turn it back on, and then go to storage in settings, it does not recognize the card. The option to mount the SD card is grayed out, and a reboot doesn't fix the problem.
Does anybody have any ideas on what could be going on?
Hopefully I didn't get a defective phone, since I already installed a Skinomi screen protector and would hate to buy a new one, and because the phones are pretty much out of stock everywhere around me.

having tons of problems with mine; tried formatting in Windows (FAT32 with "guiformat.exe"), formatting in the device a few times...
Every time, when trying to copy stuff onto the card from my Windows machine, after a few GB the connection just drops...and then the card doesnt seem to work properly until re-format. Everything is *extremely* slow to respond, even to the point of screwing with explorer when I open "Computer" in Windows from the start menu...
Bad device? Bad card? PEBCAK?

believable- this is why I only buy Extreme Pro CF cards for my camera
alas...the Extreme Pro line stops at 16GB for the MicroSDXC line, (perhaps thats a hint at the difficulty of reliably making rad MicroSD cards?) and I'll be damned if I have an Android with less storage capacity than an iPhone.

Doubtful...sold by Amazon.com LLC. I don't buy eBay shiest unless I can't find it on amazon or somewhere that either accepts google wallet or is within driving/shouting distance. Still though, I took your advice and downloaded H2testw and will run the test tonight.
Thanks for all the ideas guys!
That used to happen to me, got very frustrated because I could never copy things to my flash cards. Turns out the problem was my card reader. Try getting one of the USB ones that can actually read SDXC. I don't have one, so what I did is put it in the phone, then connect via USB to the computer in mass storage mode and it worked great.
I had the 64GB SDXC as well, it at first seemed to work, but don't be surprised if it stops working. Motorola, and I believe stock Android do not support SDXC yet. I have a somewhat detailed thread here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...d-cards-hd-maxx-hd-class-10-32gb-vs-64gb.html
When I got my card, popped it in, it formatted correctly, and seemed to work fine. As I started to put it through its paces it started to just not work. On ICS when you used the Storage option to transfer media to the SD card, it would stop halfway through and throw out errors. Eventually certain apps would stop writing/seeing the card like backup apps etc..
Be careful going forward, and test it hardcore. Transfer files back and forth, I always had issues with movie files. See if Root Explorer or other explorer apps can see it, see if Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro/SMS Backup can see and write to the card.
And yes, I did not get a dud, its works in other non-Android devices and works and tests perfectly in multiple computers. Just be cautious.

These are all the same symptoms I'm having. Well, it looks like Motorola actually had testing and reasoning behind "supports up to 32GB" :-| That'll teach us to think we're smarter than the factory QA guys...
Still though, it's a little disappointing.

Indeed, some of the Sammy devices support the SDXC 64GB card, but I think that's baked into TouchWiz. Hopefully as SDXC gets more popular it will become supported by Android all together. It would be nice to have at least half of my music library on my car so I don't have to stream all the time lol.
Confirmed working with a 64GB SDXC, works pretty well actually, now I'll never run out of space.
I bought 2 64GB micro SDXC cards. One for my Xoom and the other for my upcoming XT925. My Xoom was unable to format it so I used EaseUS Partition Master to format my 64GB cards as FAT32 partitions. So far so good...
I tried my sandisk SDXC 64Gb yesterday with no luck. It was formated to exFat though. I will try EaseUS tonight and try formatting it to Fat32.
Cheers

I bought a 64 sandisk sdxc class 10 and tried it in the phone. Didn't work. Formatted to fat32 with a partition program, still wouldn't work. Got fed up, deleted all the partitions, threw it in the phone and itr was recognized, but blank. Had the phone format it, and it works. Phenomenally actually. Haven't tested read/write, but I've filled it a few times over looking for problems and had none. Without looking I think I have just shy of 40 used on it right now.
You'd think Motorola would say something about that.
Got a 64gb sandisk class 10 and it's really buggy.
Forceclose/card disabled automaticly/cant see my files/Many lags.
So for me the xt925 is not compatible with it.
I've been using mine for about a year now, it's been working flawlessly. I had to format in my phone the initial time I first used it.

Importance of high Internal storage, 2 sd cards that failed

I have the 16 gb s4 and its great an all that we have a micro sd slot but I have found the whole concept unreliable at best. For one I have had 2 different sd cards fail. One gskill 32gb class 10 and a samsung 64 gb fail. All my pictures, roms and app gone. I back them up but still not being able to trust them is a huge concern. And the 64 gb seemed like a great idea except you have to format it fat32 to get recovery to view it, and when I did that my phone constantly wanted to format it back exfat. I pretty much have no option to get a 32 gig with a mdk rom either. Just my rant as I figure out how to rma both of these cards.

Sounds like you've just had some bad luck. I've been using a 64gb Class 10 SanDisk formatted for exFat and it's worked fine so far (I even use Folder Mount to move a bunch of stuff from internal to external).
Surprised the Samsung card failed on you.
Btw, the exfat/64gb issue only exits for some implementations. I'm running Barebones ME7 rom w/ktoonsez kernel and Phils/CWM recovery and both the recovery and the kernel support 64gb exFat.

I've never had any SD card fail me. Never heard of gskill and there is the possibility that the samsung sd card you got was a fake...depending on where you got it. I've used PNY, Samsung, and SanDisk sd cards and all have lasted me a long time through heavy usage.
I have a 64 gig sd card and never had an issue. I use it all the time.
first thing I did was wipe and format it in twrp recovery to whatever format it wanted.
golden.
Two cards failing? Unbelievable bad luck (I have never had a storage device of any type fail...not even platter hard drives...and I'm 43 and have had my own pc of some sort for 25 years), a bad card reader in the phone, or operator error.

I had an almost identical issue a while back. I used to always use a Sandisk 32gb class 10 card in my S3 and other devices. I used the same card for 3 or 4 years. When I got my S4 I decided to make the jump to a 64 gb card due to the small internal storage. So I went out and bought a 64 gb Class 10 Sandisk since I have always had good experiences with their cards. First thing I popped it into my computer and re-formatted it to Fat32. Then I plugged it into my phone and it seemed to work fine for a while, then randomly it would unmount itself and remount for no apparent reason. It would do it randomly 3 or 4 times a day. I tried wiping and reformatting to fat32 again, tried exfat, and even NTFS. Failing all that I took it back and exchanged it for another identical one. Same EXACT issue... So I gave it one last shot and exchanged one more time. At this point the ladies at Wal-mart are looking at me sideways like I'm running a scam or something. Lol. Anyways, the third one worked spectatularly. I haven't had one single unmount with it and I have all the storage I could possible need. I keep two Nandroid backups on my memory at all times (and with the S4 they are HUGE, 4gbs or better) and I have like 15 gbs of music, not to mention other miscellaneous files and apks and such, and I still have 30 gbs left.
I say just try it again man. Third times a charm. And I personally would always recommend Sandisk. I have never had one fail me and lost my data or anything. They have always worked for me.

Did you format back to Fat32 on your third try? I am going through the same thing and I am on my second card, waiting for the third to come in the mail. The first one I did Fat32 and out of the blue it would get extremely hot, and then say safe to remove card without me doing anything.
The second one, I left as is, copied everything over and left it exFat. That lasted about a week and then stuff started disappearing in gallery view, BUT it was there in Root explorer. The card it a Sandisk 64 gb Mobile Ultra.

Yeah mine was the same issue, only I didn't notice any heat to speak of. And yes on the first card I got, I used a windows program called fat32format and formatted it before ever even putting it in my phone. It would intermittently unmount and remount exactly as you are describing. So I took it out, wiped and reformatted to fat32 again. Still did the same thing. So as a last ditch I tried formatting to exfat. My phone and recovery both read the card just fine, it would just unmount randomly, or when I was either listening to music or viewing my gallery (something that required high read speeds) and it would unmount and interrupt it. So, thinkiing that it was just a faulty card I exchanged for a identical new one. Same issue. This time I used a different program to reformat to fat32, I forget the name of it, but it was a command line based reformatting tool for windows. I used it and had that same problem even after several reformats. At this point I was starting to wonder if it was a problem with my phone's SD card slot., So as a last effort I did one more exhange, reformatted using the command line tool and haven't had one single unmount since then, and I have ALOT of stuff on it. I would just suggest keep trying. I think that Galaxy phones are just sensitive to card reading and if you don't have an absolutely perfect one it will have problems. Or who knows, maybe I just had that off chance of one in a million by getting two bad cards in a row. Either way, I would suggest reading this thread (if you haven't already): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735
Use the first method on your new card. That I think is the most foolproof formatting method. Good luck, you will find the right card eventually.
Thank you!! Ill give it a shot tomorrow when the new card arrives. I appreciate that thread reference too! Fingers are crossed.

Yeah no problem. Good luck
There may be a pattern....
But I am not sure exactly what it is.
I have two nearly identical SG4s (1 for + 1 for my wife) and both have the 64GB SanDisk Micro Ultra. One phone is completely stock (my wife's) and the card is lightly used and formatted exFat. Mine is rooted and Roomed (Synergy) with TiBkup and CWM. Like other folks, I had to reformat the card to Fat32 in order to work with CWM.
As far as I can tell, she never sees any un-mount/re-mount messages on her phone but it is lightly used and she might not notice. I DO see occasional un-mount/re-mount messages, but I cannot tie it to a specific program or event. Sometimes happens right after reboot. Sometimes happens when I launch TiBkup. But goes for days with no issues.
I have never lost any data or noticed any performance hits, but now I am worried that I might.
Guess it is time to take more backups of the backups...
I have had lots of computer equipment fail over the years, but never exactly like this...
Well I followed everything nicholi2789 suggested and low and behold my card is actually working good. It does not get hot when reading ( not as hot as the other 2 anyway) and I can see a big time difference in speed. So I guess its true, the third times a charm in the case of these 64 gb Sandisk Ultra cards.
Big thanks again to nicholi2789 for pointing me in the right direction!
I bought a SanDisk Microsdxc class 10 64gb and let the phone format. It's working great. It has the fastest speeds out of all I've seen.
It's a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A)
At Amazon.

Glad you figured it out man. I didn't really do anything except to say keep trying. Lol. Good deal though.

Question SD Card Issues

Well just picked up my new A52 5G really enjoyed it at first but now my SD card keeps getting unmounted every time I restart the phone. ( The best part about this is the SD cards are made by Samsung tried 2 different ones both are 128G) (SAMSUNG: EVO Select 128GB MicroSDXC UHS-I U3 100MB/s Full HD & 4K UHD Memory Card with Adapter (MB-ME128HA)
The typical SD problems Samsung is known for. Asking Samsung for solutions is not very informative. Please any suggestions would be great.
If not I guess I just ditch Samsung A52 5G and go back to the other evil the iPhone. Heck at least every time you turn that on it always works.
This sure seems like a great phone but that SD card issue is really a big deal at least for me.
HAve you tried the same SD cards on other phones or a different SD card on the same phone?
Yes, I actually bought 2 exact same cards, no issues anywhere I use them except in the new Samsung A52 5G.
Reading a lot of other posts seems to be a pretty big issue with Samsung and Android 11.
What about if you borrow a card from a different brand? I swtiched the old SD card i was using onto my A52 5G and never had any issues. Could it be a problem with samsung cards? For reference I use a Kingston 32GB MicroSDHC with UHS 1
Try formatting card in phone if that doesn't get it try doing a low level format on the PC with a 3rd party app do not use the Windows formatting utility.
Then format again in phone.
Load card through phone.
Formatting the SD card was the first thing I did using a Linux PC. (Manjaro OS ) This was always my goto if I have formatting problems. The SD card was done in exFAT, however no luck.
The other option is buy a different brand SD card as mentioned above by "ImGonnaTryScience". (Thanks)
The card I'm looking at is the
SanDisk 128GB Extreme MicroSDXC U3, V30, 4K, A2, Micro SD.
I'm thinking maybe the Samsung SD cards are to slow, but who knows.
What doesn't make sense is the Samsung SD cards work everywhere with no issues.
I even have an old Galaxy Tab 7, Samsung SD cards works great in that. Speaking of my old Tab 7 I tried formatting the SD cards with that and then put them back into the A52 5G. This didn't work either. My thinking was Samsung should like Samsung but my thinking was wrong. (Maybe I should stop thinking.)
Speed in SD cards matter sometimes (for example the SD card I use in my dashcam needs to be a certain minimum speed otherwise it won't be able to record properly), but I find it very odd that it wouldn't work for a phone.

Not giving up just yet, I really like the A52 5G.
V30 should be fairly fast from internal memory to SD card less using the C port.
If you did a low level format then put it in the phone with not data on it, then formatted in the phone again... it should work.
I've had issues like this on my S4, now you see it, now you don't. I had to do a low level format to make it readable even on Windows. May have been a bad card but all sectors were intact.
May be card brand. Even afterward it would not see the requiring a reboot.
I'm using the Lexar .5tb V30 card in my Note 10+ and unlike what happened on the S4 the 10+ recognized immediately. Formatted it in the phone and zero issues since.
OP I feel you. This is a frustrating issue that really jams a monkey wrench in the cogs.
I be seeing red.
Pedal to metal, no brains diagnostic solution; get the Lexar card if the size and speed rating fit your needs.
$64 and known to work out of the box.

It's not a ram stick but better safe than sorry.
Well I may have solved my problem. I completely wiped the SD Card using MiniTool Partition Wizard. However I didn't add a partition or any kind of formatting. Once the card and partition was completely wiped I put it back into the A52 5G and let it do its own partitioning and formatting of the SD Card. Everything is working really well no more SD card errors, just hope it holds. ( 12hrs and still working, before that the error would pop every 30 minutes or so.) ( Still using my original SAMSUNG: EVO Select 128GB SD Card)
I'll update the progress in a few days.
Some reason the wipe of the partition seemed to do the trick. I don't really understand why since like I said the card worked well in everything except the A52. Maybe Samsung changed the format structure compared to there previous tablets and phones. Maybe its even an issue with Android 11 . All formatting in the past was always exFAT however something changed with this phone. I hope this will help out others who may be experiencing the same problem.

It's possible there was some app on it with a secure partition or something.
It may take or do what one card* did in my S4+, while never lost data it would go through spells of not being recognized by the phone requiring a reboot. No rhythm or reason to it.
Having to low level format a new card is not a good sign.
Next card get a Lexar, slam it in, format, good to go.
* it wasn't recognized by the phone or Windows. Only the Lexar formatting app could access it. After a low level format it was visible to the phone and Windows.
Really?
Well I said I would let everyone know the progress. Simple terms FAIL.
6:00AM this morning the error came back. ( SD Card was removed unsafely )
So I guess now I'll try the new SD card I mentioned above or the one mentioned above by Blackhawk ( Thanks for the info. )
(SanDisk 128GB Extreme MicroSDXC U3, V30, 4K, A2, Micro SD.)

Well .5 tb will be nice to have.
I hope this works...
Format in phone.
I would leave the card in the phone and up/download data via the phone rather than removing the card to do so.

I have no love for 11 and running on Pie quit happily on my Note 10+.
Can't say that Lexar card is know good for your phone because it uses a faster and different memory controller as well as the imfamous A-11 OS.
However before blaming the hardware or firmware I would give the Lexar a shot. It's a nice card to have regardless.
Well I picked up the sd card member Blackhawk was talking about this morning. A Lexar High-Performance 633x 512GB MicroSDXC UHS-I Card. I put the card in fresh out of the package let the A52 format the card about 4 hours later same as before, the fault came back. After reading the post the Blackhawk wrote about his pie made me think I'll try that. Fired up my pie4 and let the pie4 do the format. Well no luck there either within 30 minutes the fault came back. Well now I know its either the A52 or its Android 11. The cards both work really well in all may other devices. However the A52 5G is the only thing running Android 11. Now the question is return the phone or wait for Android 12.

Sorry to hear that. I meant that Pie as in Android 9. Try the Lexar low level formatting utility if you can find it. Again, format in phone before you use it to be on the safe side.
It seems it's the phone.
Try clearing the system cache.
Doubt check setting and clear data in associated apks. It still may be something not so obviously obvious... Androids wuv being played with.
Well I finally got the respond for Samsung I was looking for. It's not the SD card but an issue with there firmware. They claim it will be addressed with the next update. I used the Samsung Members App to send them an error report from my device and the response was quite pleasing.
( See there response)
Congratulations, you're a remote Samsung beta tester!
Just sloppy and unprofessional on Samsung's part and no fix... yet.
Eventually they'll get it but it should have never made it out for retail sale like that
Personally I'd consider asking for a full refund as without a working SD card slot the phone becomes a liability for me... as if this little ride hasn't already. That used 10+ is looking more tempting to me.
Wow. Well done
Hi another issue with SD. When I have tried to make a backup on the an SD card via the setting app it stuck after 85% and the result of it I got an SD with "write protection" which I can't change not via DOS not with other 3rd party tools. by the way its working on Samsung tablet including format and copy files but when I put is back to my mobile or try to check it on PC to delete the portion or make any change it still same issue "write protection". Would appreciate any idea before I put it to garbage. Thanks
