I was browsing some other site when I noticed some members mentioning how android 2.2.1 on their galaxy s devices made a HUGE improvement in overall speed, basically making it stock lag free. They had the original i9000 galaxy.
The story was, when google released android 2.2, their main goal was efficiency and speed overall but mainly for the snapdragon processor devices especially since their own device(nexus 1) + many others at the time, evo, incredible, etc. were snapdragon powered. Thus, people noticed the increase in speeds and also their benchmarks increased dramatically as well. The downside was, those optimizations kind of slowed down our hummingbird devices in some ways resulting in the lag we know of. Thats why some people feel(including myself) stock 2.1 was pretty slick in basic functions.
But since the 2.2.1 was leaked, people installed them on the international galaxy s devices, and even some ports were made for the samsung Captivate. All of those devices with the updates are much faster. I tried to find people having 2.2.1 on the Vibrant, but no know has so thus far. So does anyone know of any developments on 2.2.1 for or vibrants, or atleast somehow we can try to have it ported. I mean if they got it working from the i9000 to captivate, im sure vibrant should not be that much more different..
Just install voodoo lag fix. Will speed up your vibrant and be mostly lag free. Why wait for all that. I'm using odex uvjl4 froyo stock rom with voodoo. Runs awesome.

Because whichever way you look at the RFS, it is still FAT based filesystem, inefficient and ancient, Voodoo converts that to a proper linux based filesystem that should've been on the phone from the get go.
Voodoo lag fix is the ultimate solution to the lag problem. 2.2.1. in combination with voodoo would make our devices that much better with increased cpu and file system performance over 2.2.
2.2.1 was ported to the Vibrant already. Heathen got everything working and it was amazing EXCEPT for a major bug. The phone would restart every time it picked up too much network strength signal (service bars). They tried fixing it for weeks but ultimately no one was able to fix this bug which is hiding somewhere in the radio of the Vibrant apparently. Ultimately 2.2.1 was dropped and development for it is now halted.
I believe there is some development for 2.3 (Gingerbread) from both TW, CM, and maybe Heathen as well but it appears it is still a bit too early to have daily-driver ROMs.
I hope this explains the situation.

Thanks for the advice, but actually i already have voodoo running. Its just that I was interested in finding a more stable option, especially something that did not require having an additonal install. BTW how come people are getting such great benchmark numbers with their voodoo vibrants. I was getting close to 1400 and just did a complete wipe and reinstall and now im getting about about 1000. Regardless of the numbers, the phone seems to be flying though, regardless of the bogus numbers..

make sure your /system, /data, /dbdata and /cache are ext4, you can check with adb shell or terminal emulator app via "mount" command.

Brand new Fascinate just came in, has the 2.1 update. I've rooted it and I have CWM on. The text is blue so I believe that means it's the non-voodoo version..?
Anyway I just need to know what to do from here, I just want a kernal that will fix GPS issues, OC, and lagfix. I noticied they're out there I just don't know how to flash them. Everytime I try to flash it with my current CWM it gives me an error saying something about a signiture not being signed. I also saw a ROM called the community dev rom and it seemed to have the most stable version of Gingerbread on there. Every time I try and search for some help everything seems to not be up to date. So if anyone can help me in my situation I believe I gave you everything that is needed to know..
I'm coming from a G2 and previously came from a G1, so this is nothing new to me. Everything about the Fascinate just seems so confusing to me.

First of all thank you for posting this in the correct forum. You have no idea how hard it is for some members to understand this concept.

This is by far the best guide I have seen to flashing and educating people on how the fascinate works.
You mention that your recovery is blue. This is the stock samsung recovery and not the CWR 2.X or 3.X. You need to have the RED edition of CWR to have the most compatibility.
Also the Comm rom, actually called Ultimate Kangbang, is not gingerbread. In fact I think the only gingerbread it has is the keyboard. It is ED10 (EC10 if you like). It does not come with a radio but has a kernel that is completely customizable. (undervolt, or overclocking to 1.6ghz)
I would read through the posts in the Comm ROM and understand the flashing process before you get to far into it Kangbang is a great ROM, GPS is instant lock and I am currently undervolted by 75mv across the board.

Second the community rom. Might want to hold off on the oc for now. Once you get on a decent kern with voodoo enabled, and a good rom like the one mentioned you may find that this phone is fast enough. Running preset voltages and clock with absolutely no complaints about speed with none of the issues some has trying to oc.

My wife uses a Samsung Vibrant and there are just so many issues with it. Currently, it's on the latest stock Froyo release. It keeps losing all of her home screen icons (using stock TWLaucher) and we have to kill TWLauncher or reboot to get them back. Seems to have lag all over the place. Also, wifi signal strength is poor. The wifi calling app constantly turns off saying the wifi signal isn't good enough.
I'd like be interested in trying out a custom ROM. I've tinkered with some of the leaked ROMs, so I'm familiar with ODIN. I've used CWM on my Droid X before, so I should be ok with that as well.
She's not interested in 100 different themes and fancy icons and fancy features, etc. We are just going to want something that's close to stock with some tweaks that might fix some of the issues we are having. Not interested in partially working ROMs where the GPS doesn't work or issues with the camera, etc. Would like wifi calling to work as well. Need something totally stable. I'm not going to want something that's going to need updating weekly either.
Anything out there that meets what I'm looking for?
Please make suggestions.
Hi, same situation here, my gf has stock vibrant with froyo and many issues...
I've cm7 on my N1 so I considered it for the vibrant but at the moment it have troubles with gps and wifi SO I've searched a lot and the much more stable rom (for me of course) is the projectV, it's based on the official froyo with some tweaks and fixes, seems pretty stable until now

It'll definently improve Lag and that icon problem that you have will not happen. And almost every ROM in here has a Lagfix, so Project-V does have one and will come on when you flash it. (A voice of a robotic women after flashing means that Voodoo is flashing) Voodoo is the name of the Lagfix, which makes our systems run on ext4 instead of the slow RFS system stock that your wife had.

The best thing about Project-V ROM is that its made to be fast and for tweaking, that's why they say they're not competing with Cyanogenmod because it also has both speed and tweaking abilities. So don't worry if you think Project-V is all eye candy, because its both Speed, Stability, and Tweaks!

I flash this with CWM? I don't exactly recall where to get CWM or how to use it, but I'm sure I'll figure that out.
Installing this over stock will be a total data wipe, right? I should back up programs and program data with Titanium first and then restore after?

Let's say Samsung releases a 2.3 that's a solid ROM and I want to go back to stock. With this applied and whatever lagfix, file conversion that's been done, how hard would it be to get back to stock?

Yes, wouldn't be surprised at all if there's never an official 2.3 for this. Their 2.2 release was many months behind competing phones originally released around the same time. Still, just want to make sure I understand what I'm getting into here and how hard it would be to get back out. Could I easily get back to the stock froyo that it's on now, if I need to?
I've never did it , but I think u have to odin back to 2.1 stock and then ota (or keys) to 2.2 or whatever

Does the new market that came out this week work fine on this phone?
Before this market, I also had terrible problems updating apps. It was brutally slow and update all usually failed on most apps. I was very surprised that after installing the new market, I was able to do an update all on 20 apps with no problems at all.
My wife had pretty much given up on updating apps on the stock rom.
not yet tried ! But my gf had no problem at all with old and oldest market under tmob, now she's back in Italy, so I've unlocked the sim and still have no issues!

I like the bionix 1.3.1 with bali 1.8.7 uv kernel.
i'm not sure about the wifi calling as I dont use that feature.

As far as which rom you choose is your choice, I am running Toxic Smoke and a lot of people will agree its super quick and responsive but I support almost all roms, Devs here do great work on the vibrant and all should be recognized for it. I may have a solve for your low WiFi signal though..... Have you looked in to the Hardware GPS fix? It involves you opening up your phone and bending a small piece of copper, I did so and put a tiny sliver of credit card plastic under it to keep it from bending back down and now my GPS signal is ridiculous as compared to before. But as I read more there is another copper pin on the opposite side of the phone, that is your WIFI antenna. I then took my phone apart again and did the same thing to that pin and now My WIfI gets great signal. I guess it all depends on how tech savoy you are and how much you want to get into your phone. I know for how much it cost and how much I use my phone I wanted it working 100% so I took the extra time to do all of this and Im quite happy with my Vibrant now. But anyway my specs on my phone are,
ROM: ToxicMusixSmoke
Launcher: Golauncher Pro EX (Which is freaking awesome and free)
Kernal: Bali X (Will increase the responsiveness of your phone ff Overclocked to 1.2 using setCPU, you can download for free on XDA, cost 2.99 or something on the market, the dev offers it for free on here)
+ Hardware GPS Fix and S.gps.zip file for the drivers (You can also find this fine on the Hardware GPS fix post)
I hope this helps as my phone is very stable and I am totally satisfied with my phone as I was not so much at first. I also think with Golauncher you can get stock themes so your phone will look and act just like stock, but run 10000000000000 times better!

While I no longer use it myself, I found Zendroid 2.0.1 with Bali Kernel to be the simplest and easiest to use for a layman, like the average wife or girlfriend
It's extremely lightweight with no bloat to speak of, and battery life is phenomenal (no bloat, no 2g/3g bleeding).
@lexluthor you can use root explorer our similar app to copy the apk to the system/app folder.

I have had an Incredible since about October of 2010 and it finally bit the dust and I have moved to the Fascinate because of the price and awesome reviews the phone has received.
I have a few questions about the Fascinate.
What known bugs does this phone have? Are the bugs specific to Froyo, Gingerbread or both?
Which stock ROM is better for this device, Froyo or Gingerbread? (I prefer Froyo for the Incredible)
Is there a mostly stock ROM for this phone that is completely stable, zero bugs and zippy?
What is the best and easiest root method?
Is there anything I need to do before I root?

Take a look at my guide in the general section. Section 1 has i.structions for flashing imo one of the best froyo roms...its just a enhanced version of stock froyo that yields awsome battery life. I also have a section (5) on rooting, but its not needed if your flashing a custom rom. Pretty much all of the latest roms for the fascinate are pre rooted.

Welcome to the fascinate forums ej, I too came from an incredible not too long ago so here's a couple things that should help you out.
First, you do not need to root to flash a rom/recovery/whatever. Samsung apparently leaves the security pretty wide open so you're free to flash an alternate recovery in odin then flash the rom of your choice from there. This was a weird concept for me coming from the incredible, and I think a lot of people just assume that you need to root before flashing roms (as that's how it is with moto, HTC, etc) but that's not the case.
I don't know if you prefer stock or AOSP roms, on the stock front, I think there's Superclean, Geewhiz, and TSM resurrection. These should be quite stable stock-ish roms that don't have the bugs that AOSP roms do. AOSP roms (ICS/MIUI/CM7/TSM PoolParty) on the fascinate use a different and faster filesystem (MTD). I can't really comment on any roms but MIUI/CM7/ICS as that's all I've ever used personally. The AOSP bugs that I've run into (currently on CM7) are data issues - data will occasionally drop out requiring airplane mode toggle, or will get stuck on 1x after sending/receiving SMS. Also there's a weird thing where the earpiece volume during calls will default to a high volume (just requires a quick volume adjustment or tasker script). I don't always notice this happening though.
I'll probably think of more later on, those are just the ones that come to mind at the moment. Hope this helps.

The volume bug is something that I've read is an issue with all MTD roms (CM7/MIUI/ICS), but in my experience, I've only noticed it a couple times, and I've only been on MTD roms since I got this phone a month or two ago. What I'm trying to say is, it's a pretty minor concern for me, but I don't actually talk on the phone all that much.
IMO, this phone is a nice upgrade coming from the incredible. Not galaxy nexus-like nice upgrade, but still, considering I sold my incredible for what I paid for the fascinate, it was totally worth it. One of the big things you'll notice coming from the incredible is the screen. I had an AMOLED incredible, and the SAMOLED on the fascinate is *much* better. You get a little more screen real estate (3.7" vs 4") and the display itself is just much more vibrant and closer to the actual glass part of the touchscreen that you interact with. Also, with voodoo color, you can tweak the display exactly to your liking, which is something I've definitely enjoyed being able to do.
Also, if you use your phone as a media player, you will love the WM8994 DAC used in the Galaxy S line. It sounds absolutely amazing paired with the voodoo control (app that lets you tweak sound and display) - considerably better than any ipod I've tested it side-by-side against. The audio quality alone will make it hard for me to upgrade, considering the DACs used in the newer generation devices like the Nexus or Galaxy SII are actually inferior to the one used in the original Galaxy S phones.
There is one downgrade coming from the incredible though, and that's the RAM (384MB vs 512MB), but I haven't run into any situation yet where the RAM was insufficient to do what I wanted to do. Also, if you're in to tweaking kernel things, you can do MUCH more with the kernels on this device compared to the incredible.
I'm not sure about mesmerize roms, I don't think you could use them on the fascinate unless they were modified. Are there any mes-specific roms you've seen that aren't available on the fascinate? As far as froyo vs GB, I can't really comment on that either since I've only used GB/ICS. Now that I think of it, aside from stock roms, I haven't seen any froyo roms around. But that's probably because I got the phone right around when GB finally officially came out for it.

1. Lowest in-call volume is TOO HIGH!
2. Headset buttons don't work other than pause, play, answer, and end. (GAY!)
3. When I end a call and hit the power button to turn the screen off, it comes back on! (with Widget Locker) regular lock works fine to keep the screen off after a call. Hmm
4. Music playback doesn't seem to sound right. (sounds tinny)
5. Volume buttons turn the screen on! (What the hell?)

try flashing the glitch v13.1 kernel, should help with in call volume...thats if your currently on a mtd rom. If your running a TW rom, then use the kgb kernel and use terminal to adjust call volume settings.

1. I'm on glitch kernel and it's fine for me. You can also customize all sorts of volumes but I've just left em at the default.
2. What other functions are besides play, pause, answer/end aren't working? Track skipping? I have a pair of headphones with inline controls and nothing works on MTD roms for me, so your already a bit ahead of the curve in comparison.
3. Sounds like something with widgetlocker, not necessarily the phone.
4. Adjust settings in Voodoo control if you need. Music sounds *amazing* with my setup. I personally delete DSPmanager and just use VC.
5. This is something that can be turned on or off with CM7/MIUI. You didn't say what rom or kernel you're using so it's kinda hard to help.

4. Adjust settings in Voodoo control if you need. Music sounds *amazing* with my setup. I personally delete DSPmanager and just use VC.
5. This is something that can be turned on or off with CM7/MIUI. You didn't say what rom or kernel you're using so it's kinda hard to help.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot to tell you what ROM I'm using.
I'm on the Geewiz 2.3 Gingerbread ROM and kernel because I always like some goodies but I try to stay as close to stock as possible for stability reasons. I know the volume issue is with Widgetlocker but it didn't do that on the Dinc so, I have to have something to blame right? Ha...
Do the US Cellular Mesmerize phones have the same issues as our phones? Ya know like the headset control, in-call volume too high and all that?
Oh I gotcha, does the kernel you're using support voodoo sound? If not, I'd try out another one that does and then check out your music. And yes, I think the issues that are common to the phone affect the fascinate/mesmerize/showcase since they're essentially the same phone. I don't know much about touchwiz roms, but I'd suggest looking into a kernel with more features, you might be able to tweak those things that you're having an issue with.

I tried the KGB kernel and it has an option to boost in-call volume but nothing to lower it. The tinny sound issue was my inline remote I use for the headphones, it had a faulty volume slider that needed some cleaning. Thanks for all your help!

Oh okay, I thought all theses issues were probably software issues with Verizon's ROM/kernel. Yes, Geewiz kernel supports voodoo.

I got my old Vibrant replaced with refurb and wanted to try something new so I went back to stock and then installed ICS by passion. However, this has been nothing but a headache because the phone is very laggy.
Since the phone is for my wife and she doesn't give a rip what's on it, I figured I'd go back to froyo but remember the GPS still causing me issues and she relies on it pretty heavily for her business.
I read a few threads that Nero by team whiskey was good but all the links i've found are dead and so TW's main domain.
What is the most stable and easy version I can put back on her phone that actually has a working GPS? Also, I'm a straight up noob at most of this even though I have over 15 years of corporate level IT experience. I feel like I'm just starting over trying to learn all the stuff one can do with Android phones. so please, if you have links that work, feel free to post.

Try Helly Bean along with the V6 Supercharger.
There's only one place I get lag and that is when intializing Google Now the new feature in JB.
Android is the only OS the Vibrant run right now that I know of, but I wouldn't mind trying out other linux OS on it.
To answer your question, I use SlimRom on all my devices I have and had. I found CyanogenMod 7 and SlimICS gets better GPS signal. SlimBean can get signal, but tend to be slower but I expect it to improve over time. With my Vibrant, without doing the "hardware GPS fix" its impossible to get any GPS signal.

I have noticed that my system/xbin is full which caused me issues installing busybox. It finally installed but I'm still showing 0 space in that folder. Is this normal or did I forget something when going to back to stock?

I didn't stay on Froyo long enough to tell what the partitioning looked like but on CM10/JB it was changed. I use JB as my daily driver. Like others my GPS is for the most part none functional. This is not the fault of the ROM but hardware design. When I get industrious I will fix it. More likely I will upgrade by then.
