Replaced/added some .apk's and they don't work? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using the dsixda kitchen to build ROMs for my Desire HD. I have built a few ROMs now and on the whole they have worked OK. However there area few apps that are out of date and a few I would like by default. I know I can download the majority of them from the market but I would like them just there by default. I know apps get updated all the time so I will never get perfection so bear with me.
I have sucessfully added ASTRO, HandyCalc, ROM Manager SMS Backup & Restore and VISIONary+ and these work fine. I have also updated the .apk's for Facebook to 1.8.1, Google Maps to 6.0.3, Twitter to 3.0.0, YouTube to 2.3.4 & GMail to 2.3.5.2.
Now heres my problem - If I try to update Adobe Reader to 10.1.1 by replacing the AdobeReader.apk with the latest one it doesn't work. Once the ROM is built and installed I can see the .apk is there in /system/app however there is no icon in All Apps for Adobe Reader and I can't open .pdf's.
I also use Google Goggles & Skype, however if I add these .apk's to the ROM they appear to be installed and start OK however Goggles crashes as soon as the camera is started from the app and Skype lets you run through the initial setup but then says the app needs reinstalling.
Is there something I am missing or are there apps that can't be updated and others that can't be included in ROMs?

My guess is your using these apps in /system/app? If so keep in mind that most apps are built for /data/App. Sometimes applications act funny on system. If they are not on the system and on the data then that's just strange.

I was looking into that but I thought you needed extra script commands to get these recognised during 1st-time boot? At the moment I have these apps installed via the market, however I can't find where they are on the phone - I am using Astro to view/search and can't find the updated Adobe Reader, however it is installed.
I think I might be missing some fundamental stuff here...

Then you can also check and see if installed to the sdcard maybe?

/data is empty. On the sdcard there is an 'Android' folder and in here is a /data folder that has other folders (com.android.providers.media, com.facebook.katana, com.google.android.apps.books, com.google.android.apps.maps).
I have enabled hidden files in Astro (but it could be a limitation of Astro?). Astro has an application backup option that allows me to backup any of these added applications into .apk files and then restore them later.
Andy

/data shows empty when you try and view it with astro...
Root Explorer (and some others I'm sure) will show everything in there...

Thanks Going to be rebuilding shortly

I found this post whilst searching - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654739#
In there FireSokar mentions adding some lines to the update script. For the Desire HD it is an updater-script and the format/syntax is different can someone tell me what I need to add to the updater-script and where it should be put (at the very end, somewhere in the middle etc?)
Thanks

[UPDATE] [PACK] System Apps Update Pack for CyanogenMod 6 [SIGNED]

I've put together an update.zip with the latest versions of all the System Apps that come with CyanogenMod 6.
This solves multiple problems:
Allows you to update those apps that just don't want to (Street View, Superuser, etc)
Updates to system apps are stored on the "data" partition. This uses up your available space. By flashing this update, the updated files will be stored on your "system" partition -- where they belong, instead of your "data" partitions, where the files get placed when you update from the Market.
I'm not 100% sure, but I have a good feeling this is the final fix to problem #1. I believe this causes Android to update the signature associated with the app, "correcting" itself.
The updated apps
Amazon MP3
Chrome-to-Phone
Gmail
Google Maps
Google Search
Google Voice
ROM Manager
Street View
Superuser
TalkBack
Twitter
Voice Search
You can go ahead and download the file here: http://www.unforgivendevelopment.com/2010/09/25/cyanogenmod-6-system-apps-update-pack-09252010/
If you encounter any issues, or have any comments or anything, let me know.
Enjoy!

I flasheed with clockwork and had no problems.
so if I have understand this correct, every time a update is available we should not update through market instead wait for you to update the pack and then flash through recovery? because when I checked market now, I don't see Maps or Voice Search installed even if they are installed and latest versions, if I update they will get into the data directory right?
Thanks. Flashed clockwork now works. Newer updates from market still fail.

I have a 2-fold question for you guys:
I have apps on the /data/app partition such as Vlingo, SetCPU, Calibration Settings, MusicMod, Twitter, etc. Many of these are root apps and some are widgets that I use. The phone shows 152.61mb used and 43.64mb free in this partition, fyi.
I also have a most of my apps on the /system/app such as Camera, Browser, Email, Gallery etc. All of these are the core system apps. The phone shows 110.55mb used and 34.45mb free.
(1) If I move all of the apps from /data/app to /system/app can I?
Looks obvious that I wouldn't have enough space on the /system/app partition!
(2) If I move just a couple of widgets from /data/app to /system/app to free up space, would the widgets still boot up normally when the phone reboots or would they have to be re-installed?
Works as advertised. thanks

Thanks for the quick response Rori!
So I can move what I want to move to the /system/app and they will boot right along with the phone, however, the Market will no longer "see" them as installed on my phone, correct?
I understand that Clockwork is set to ignore signature checks. So, this zip should flash through Clockwork no matter what, but will only flash through Amon_RA's recovery with a proper signature.
edit: I get it.
Would also appreciate a fix for AR. Thanks.

There is an updated gapps over at cyanogenmod (Nexus One, Stable forum, downloads section) that is the full gapps bundle. Not sure about the signature situation, but if it's like the previous files, then it should be fine.

gAppsInstaller - Froyo

*** Archos Devices Only ***
This includes only the Market, Calendar, Talk, GenieWidget and "required gSync" files. Any apps that are in the Froyo Market are NOT included. Honestly, this is better as it makes a smaller appInstaller package and its more compatible.
You can download the following from the Market -- Gmail, VoiceSearch, YouTube and Maps(Navigation)
SUMMARY
v5-Stable -- (recommended!)
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
WARNING: If you've installed this or other gApps installers, you may have to RESET to successfully install gAppInstaller.
Note: You may get an error when you first open the Market, ignore the error. It may also take a few minutes before the Market updates from 2.09 to the current version.
Download - http://code.google.com/p/archos-apps-installer/downloads/list
Copy download to your device via USB (if you didnt download directly using your Archos)
Use 'Files' app to locate gAppsInstaller, then execute/install it
Choose install core apps or choose to install your own packaged 'apps.zip' file located on the internal drive (not sdcard). There maybe a short delay after you tap an install button (its installing and you'll be notified when its done, about 5-10 seconds)
REBOOT!!
Sign into Market (Google Account Login)
Follow the Market FIX instructions below
MARKET FIX:
This will get you most missing apps from the market, except some "protect market apps" like NYTimes.
Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Market (Clear Cache then 'Force Stop' -- DO NOT clear data)
Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Google Services Framework (Clear data then 'Force Stop')
REBOOT again
Market Fix video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l-nySibzeA&feature=player_embedded#!
If you do this correctly you will find most missing apps like 'Copilot Live USA' in the Market. However, some apps require certain features (like a GPS or Cell chip) and will not show up in the Market. Basically, if you search for application "MyGPS" and "MyGPS" is coded to REQUIRE a GPS chip, then the Android market will NOT show this app in the Market for our Archos Device because is lacks a GPS chip.
MARKET LANGUAGE FIX (unverified):
Once you install the Market, it will probably be in English only. You may be able to fix this by putting your device into English via Settings menu, then put the device back into whatever other language you require.
RESET DEVICE:
Follow these instructions to reset your Archos Gen8: http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=42437&start=0
12/23/2010:
v5 released and appears stable. This is the last froyo version since the Market auto-updates and NetworkLocation works.
kenyu73 - Thanks for the update, could you possibly test a couple of apps for me before I wipe and load this up?
TweetDeck
Slingplayer
Moblox
Those have never worked correctly on your build and I use them pretty regularly. Thanks! Looking forward to results.

any reason to re-install from v3?
I used your v3 (thank you very much!) - it worked well. I have Market + select Google apps on my A70.
I'm still missing some apps on Market that I'm unable to find no matter what, even after following "the procedure" - LauncherPro, AWDLauncher, etc. Frankly I can sideload most apps anyhow.
Is there any point/reason in installing v4? (I'm hoping for a "no")?

There are some "protected" apps that we'll never see. However, I can find LauncherPro(free) as well as ADW.Launcher(by AnderWeb) just fine.
kenyu73, Thanks for your updates.

Please keep on fine-tuning it and share with us.
Bit the bullet and loaded up the new app installer. It works perfectly. No more force closes on tweetdeck or when logging into the xda app. Thanks for this.

Thanks for the feedback. I think the v4 is really the final stable version. I've been using it all day today and not one single Market FC and I can find all apps in the Market (except protected apps). I did have to do the Market fix though.
The next issue I'd like to fix is the Voice Search GUI issue. The GUI interface isn't as clean as my cell phone, but I'm not sure if that's even fixable. Even though we install Voice Search directly from the Market, it still just sucks!!
Just a short note:
If you have already rooted your device with z4root a reboot is never reasonable.
To avoid lossing the root (which can of cource be reinstalled using z4root again) you can use the App HotReboot. This app reboots the device but the "root" still exists!
BTW: Thanks for your work!!!!

excellent - thankyou kenyu
one question from a newbi
when i follow the link - I see an apk and two zip files
how do i use the two zip files ? appsinstaller and apps
thanks Stephen
Just use the apk file.
The apps.zip is just the apks that you should download from market, and the zipped installer is the source codes. If you just want to install the installer, then only the apk should matter to you.

All the apps in the zip files should be down-loadable from the Market directly. That zip is only there for people who cant download some apps because of their country of origin (like Maps). Some may use it so they don't have to download those apps.
Best bet is to install the core apps via the installer, reboot then d/l that apps you want from the Market.

I'd reboot again. However, it could be your internet connection. My Samsung Fascinate (Galaxy S) doesn't that sometimes.
Did you install over an existing Market install or was this a fresh install? If it was a re-install, as my instructions said, best bet is to do a reset and start over.
i decided to load some apks in the .system folder to see if i could get it to load my own apks to save me less time.. and in the process using this gapps apk vs the one with the GUI glitch worked very well.. like how i can download my own youtube etc so i have the choice of which google apps i want
These are the only apks that can be pushed to the froyo/system/app folder. Archos put the apk reference aliases (prefixed with a 0) into the read-only '/system/app' knowing we'd manually add them to the read/write test folder. Anything else in the app folder is ignored.
If Archos didn't do this, I doubt we'd even have Market access until the devce was fully rooted.

missing market apps on nook tablet

I rooted my nook tablet with the SnowballMod root and everything is working fine, but some of the apps in the android market are missing. I have tried editing the build.prop file and clearing the market data and cache to spoof the market, but it still wont work. does anybody have ANY ideas?
theres not some, more like a lot and thats normal cuz its happening to everyone. apps that dont appear on the market have to be downloaded as .apk files and then transferred to your nooks sd card i use drop box and es file explorer for this procedure

It's not technically broken. The market should not show you apps for which your device does not meet the requirements. That doesn't meet they don't work, but that you have to install them another way. After updating my phone to ICS, I had to sideload Tapatalk, since it is not "technically" compatible with ICS, even though it does work.

Installing Gapps over an existing Gapps Install

Long story short, i have had the Droid razr for about a month and as soon I got the device, I flashed over the Black Widow ICS rom. Everything worked fine and smoothly but then a noticed a problem and hopefully you guys can help me.
There are updates for various Google Apps (Gapps) that i installed when flashing over the ROM. If I look at my apps within the Google Market as a whole, under the Installed tab, nothing needs updating. But for instance, if i click on Gmail, theres a update for it.
So first i was like cool, Ill try to download it. Downloads fine when it tries to Update, it says " Error - Package file was not signed correctly. Uninstall the previous copy of the app and try again" I understand what the error code means so I think to myself, "ok ill just delete the app and download using the Market."
Go to Manage Apps, and all i can do is Disable the so-called app but i cant uninstall it. So i thought, "ok ill try to uninstall it through the Google Market. Nope, the only two options are UPDATE and OPEN.
So i need you help. Should i download a newer version of GAPPS or is there a easier way to uninstall so i can just re-download it again.
Thanks EHB
Use a root browser (like es file explorer) make sure the /system is accessible and root enabled.
Go to /system/apps and delete the .apk for it
Same thing happened to me with the Arctic rom, maps wouldn't update, so i just got maps from the market after deleting it

Use Root Explorer as then 2 apps above is not powerful enough to delete the system file. Be sure you are on R/W mode, you can check on the upper right part of Root Explorer. That should do the trick.
You said you flashed a new Rom, which means you know how to use recovery. From the text it shows when you install a GApps package, it deletes the old files before adding the new ones. Now, I haven't actually looked at the install code but I wouldn't imagine Cyanogen or whomever the builder of that package is, would lie about something that thousands of people use?
Anyways, just try flashing a new GApps package. A few of the ones I have flashed have had Gmail included while others have not.

Can't install APK files outside of Play Store?

I recently upgraded from an Android 7 phone (Moto G5) to an Android 9 phone (Moto G7). I like to back up all of my apps that I plan on using in the future, using a backup app like ML Manager, and installing them locally with a file browser, like FX. On my new phone, there are some APK backups that I can't install from a file browser; even if I actually download them though the Google Play Store, back them up, uninstall them, and then try to install that backup on the same phone, it won't work. Not every app does this, and at first, I thought it was only paid apps that were giving me problems, so I chalked it up to DRM, but a bunch of free apps won't work, either.
I've tried alternate methods of installation, too, like using a terminal emulator (see the screenshot, using the app Manual Camera as an example), and ADB on a PC, which results in an INSTALL_FAILED_VERIFICATION_FAILURE error. I've searched for this error and followed directions, like disabling Play Protect (which I never enabled on this phone, anyway), but nothing works. Is this just how Android is now? Did something change so that it's harder to install backups? I tried all of this on my wife's phone, too, which also runs Android 9, and I got the same errors. Any help would be appreciated, because I'm out of ideas. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, downloading from the Play Store definitely works, I'm just curious as to why backing up an app downloaded from the Play Store won't install from the APK *on the exact same device.* I'm a stickler for keeping local backups of everything, but I'm more curious than anything at this point.

Well there is a another reason
That is some app install with APK
And other one install with APKS
which you should install them with SAI and have two or three file to install (even more)
And when you backup from apks apps it doesn't backup all files to install it again
But at play store it install automatically
