Thank you! I was waiting for somebody to make one. Im going to watch this first thing in the morning and finally root my NT
Thanks, I'll give that a shot shortly.
I've tried logging into the android market using the non-rooted technique and complains I have no android phone after logging in under my google account, enter a phone # etc. After the root, will this be resolved, or did you have an android phone / tablet already on the account?

I'm new to Android, so by "rooting" we are only talking about access to android marketplace and more apps correct?

Android is basically Linux
Rooting your device means giving yourself root, or superuser (admin) access, giving you access to system files and the ability to change things that normally are marked read only.
This allows for removing "pre-installed" applications (called by some people "bloat-ware", because they bloat the system.), installing other applications (for example, although members of this forum figured out how to "side-load", or install without a market, some of the Google apps, the "Google Market" requires an entire framework which needs root access), and making changes to the system in ways that generally void your warranty (but can sometimes speed things up and make the device do things that no one expected it to do).
"Rooting" is also the first step (but only *one* of many) toward installing custom versions of the Android operating system (or "ROMs").
It's kind of a big deal, and the ability to root makes the device just *that much* more appealing to people who like to tinker.
how to check if NT is rooted
Hi, I followed the video all up till the part before it prompts the installation of Gapps. I don't know why mine did not provide that prompt. It just stopped working.
Now I have no clue if my root was successful. Please help?

you might have accidentally hit enter or something. To check for root, go to search and instead of putting go launcher in, put superuser and it should tell you if the superuser app is installed or not. If installed you are rooted and you can use the gapps instructions to install that alone. but I would just try running nook zergy again. Make sure your cable is not loose.
Just added another video to the collection, I demonstrate home catcher apk and games that work/dont work on the nook tablet

Hi,
My name is Mohamed Asiq, I from India. I have a nook tablet, but have not registered it yet. B&N account needs a U.S. shipping address only. So I cannot create a new account. Without registering I cannot even open the tablet. So please I kindly request you to allow me to use your nook account. I ensure that I will not misuse it or purchase using it or use it, besides in India the account will not work. Please consider my request. Please.....CONTACT ME [email protected]

How did you get one if you are in india? I am sorry, but your request is one that very few would even consider. My recommendation is to setup a fake mailing address or possibly a P.O box.
thanks suicideclown for your reply, but is it possible to setup a fake address? I mean will not the B&N SERVER CHECK THe credit card address.

you dont have to setup the credit card to turn on, just the mailing address when you create a barnes and noble account. no credit card required.
Just released a demo of using dropbox and a drop box referral builder thread to help people build their storage capacity.

The point of the android market is to only show you games that are capable of functioning on your device. If you can see it in the android market, you should be able to play it... however, we have a hacked market so this may not be 100% true...

So I know they have preloaded Root SD Cards for the Nook Color so that you don't "break" your Nook and void your warranty and so you can easily revert back by just removing the card. Do you know if they exist for the Tablet yet? I've seen reports where using the ones for the Color on the Tablet don't work.

Adam has found a way to boot stock B&N on SD card, but some people still report issues from it. No one has found a way to boot non-signed roms from SD.
I have a NooK TABLET that I am able to sideload apps and have loaded the amazon app store using the information from LiliPuting site. I do NOT want to ROOT my tablet. Is there a way to change the automatic update setting to Manual without having to root the tablet?
Now that is a good question as I am back at 1.4.0 and not quite sure I want to root but love the idea of side loading apps.
As of now no and most likely never.... I don't see why you wouldn't want to root though....

I bit the bullet and decided to root. Thanks to everyone on these forums, my Nook Tablet is at 1.4.0, rooted, and OTA blocked. I still have access to my B&N purchased books AND have the benefit of using the Android Marketplace.
The whole process was quite easy just by following Indirect's thread for rooting and blocking the OTA.
As I sit here drinking a Dogfish 60 Minute IPA customizing my Nook Tablet, I raise my glass to all of the developers here (Indirect in particular) for without their hard work and knowledge this would just be an eReader...a nice eReader but an eReader all the same.
Cheers!!!
Does anyone think it is possible to block the bn.com domain (on your home router, or by some other means), and prevent an update that way? Are we able to get a list of IP's that BN uses for the updates? Probably too simple, but maybe it will stir one of the geniuses on this forum to think of some similar or better way to accomplish this (for all of us low-tech non-rooted folks)!
I am one of the most computer illiterate people I know, and I was still able to root. While it wasn't as easy for me as for others on this board, if I can do it so can you

It would take more work to block it that way than to just root.

I read the whole section forum and people are side loading uncompatible apps, but no where does anyone explain "how to" side load an app can somenoe tell me, I have apps on my Galaxy 7in and they are not compatible with the Sony S running Android 3.2.1.
I want my Amazon app store, Pinger texting, words with friends and I have others too!
This is a new toy for me but disappointed that I cannot get these apps
Any help is appreciated!
It's easiest if you have ADB knowledge so you can pull apps from the galaxy tab and push them to the tablet s, but you can get the amazon appstore by going to amazon's website and it'll email you a link to the download. Also, I have words with friends on my tablet which I downloaded from the market no problems. Maybe with the latest tablet s update it is no longer marked as compatible, in which case we'll have to wait for the ICS update for a lot of the fragmentation problems to go away.
Put the .apk file from your Tab on your sd card, then you go into a file explorer type application on the Sony to find the file. Click on it and it should ask you if you want to install.
You should be able to download the amazon app store directly from amazon.com.
Also a nice program that will backup all your settings/files/apks is MyBackup Root, which will put all the apk's in one folder. However looks like the sony still hasn't been rooted?? I'm still waiting for mine in the mail.
Thank you
I am sure some of this is out of my league but I am going to take a shot at it. This is all new to me. I am technically challenged LOL.
I am going to go get the Amazon App Store though.
Thank you for the extra help

If you use Astro File Manager (I know plenty do) on your Tab, you can use Astro's built-in App Manager to backup the apk files from every installed app to a folder on your SD Card. Then just copy this folder to your Sony like any other file, then using Astro (or some other file manager) to click on the individual apps in that folder and choose install.
I backed it up
AGC 93
I really am technically challenged here, I downlaoded the Astro File system, and I backed up the programs I want but I don't know where I backed them up to, it didn't give me a choice as to where to back them up.
Then I dont know how to transfer them from one device to the other. I wasn't kidding when I said technically challenged!
Thank you
Sandy
you could also save apps on a shared drive and install from there using file manager or the same via dropbox, etc
Maybe?
Maybe one of you would be willing to walk me through this procedure from beginning to end and then I will learn it, but right now it is all a mumbo jumbo to me.
We can do it through PM if we don't want to clog up the forum or maybe there is someone else who needs the same help as myself
Thank you
Sandy
Would it not be easier to just use the normal Amazon web page rather than mess about trying to get an app to install? If it's anything like the Amazon iphone app, it's pretty useless anyway - certainly nowhere near as good as using the web page.
I should explain better
I really need to text so I need a texting program that works well with at least some options. Chompsms and Handcent do not work without a phone number and getting an answer from tech support from either of those is like pulling eye teeth,(sorry)
I found a texting program on my galaxy 7 inch that works wonderful and does have some options for larger fonts, a local phone number bubbles so you know who is talking blah blah blah, it is not compatible with Android 3.2.1 which is on my new Sony tablet,
I am trying to side load that and Have no idea what I am doing,
Plus when we get ICS does that mean some of the things that are not compatible now will be when we get that update?
thank you in advance for all the help
Sandy

Sorry for the slow reply. By default, the apps we be backed up to a folder called Backup on the SD card. In there, there should be your apk's.
Hope that helps
Or not as all I want to do for now is play youtube vids , read manga/comics and stream anime mks from my server ? Can I do all this without rooting ?
Well if you've turned it on and connected to Wi-Fi you're most likely already screwed if you wanted to root. If you haven't I would suggest it if you don't care about prime services...I had my HDX set up to look almost aosp with the now launcher and all of google services running including the store...then the update put me back to this ****ty combo of android and fire os
Sent from my KFAPWI using Tapatalk
I have not turned it on yet and will not for a day or two to research this.So you suggest I should root it ?
I would suggest rooting if you fit the following:
- You feel comfortable rooting your device knowing that you are able to brick your device. You understand the risk
(I personally think it happens when low on battery power cuts the process off since it gets mentioned a lot, or installing the tools needed in a incorrect order could put you in a "boot loop" from what I've heard/read. Correct me guys if I'm wrong. Or confirm that's right. Or add to the small list from experience with bricking if you want. I have not bricked my two devices myself and rooted Android devices before using other dev tools).
- You want to customize your tablet into a hybrid of both Amazon OS/ with Android launcher.
- You prefer having access to paid apps on the Google Play store since you can not side-load paid Google apps (from PC to Kindle using USB). Personally I found that video games run smoothly on the paid emulators I bought so far from the Google Play store.
- If you truly haven't been updated yet.
To check: When you go to Settings / Device / System Updates and it says Current Version is 14.3.1.0_user_... (also heads up, don't connect to the internet. The update for 14.3.2.1 will download automatically and when it's done it will install by itself. I own a Kindle Fire HDX 7" with 13.3.1.0 on it but they are pretty much the same thing except for a few things designed specifically for that device being their different code and/or addresses I would assume)
- You've rooted a Android device before. That way you feel more comfortable.
Your 3 concerns you've told us: You can watch YouTube through Amazon's OS only using their web browser called Silk. If your comics are PDF then you can view those without rooting as well. I never used mks files if that's what you're referring to so I can't help you there. Other than that, that's all the info I think you need other than the process it takes to actually root the device.
Hope I helped explain clearly.

H0B0onDRUGS2 provided some sound advices regarding rooting for you...
However, I watch YouTube and streamed video files from my PCs on my non-rooted and updated KFHDX7. Even though I don't do it, but I'm fairly sure you can read comics too without root. What file formats are they?
I've never rooted as i actually like fire os. My lgg2 satisfies my need to root, mod, flash. etc.
As far as YouTube goes tubemate, available from the Amazon store, works well for me however I'll probably sideload og youtube at some stage. Don't know about comics or anime.
LgG2 d802 running Sotmax V5 ROM
Looks like I will root it as I dont mind getting my hands dirty and I dont like closed eco systems like apple/amazon ,only reason I got was I got it dirt cheap
PS the manga are i think cbr/cbz and mostly in rar/tar containers full of png's.
Learning about Android and other things. Is it possible to open up developer options and remotely root or write files to someone's phone? I mean not just apps but the bootloader and entire OS of the phone?

I don't think it's possible to root the phone wirelessly since it need a reboot. If you're talking about privilege escalation hacks, that's a whole other planet, that I'm not qualified to help in (and would not want to since this technique is misused very often)
Well this is happening with me I've started noticing files from 1969 and I know Android was invented in 1969 least of all system files so I dove a little deeper and I'm in need some help. I ain't the cleanest person in the world but I'm not hacking anybody I did download programs to learn more about file systems and programming so I could customize my own devices. This is twice this is happened now in the past 2 years. I'll just say anything this is just a hobby of mine to take and learn my devices and computers and the games for my kid but guys like this or just making it where I don't even want to have a computer or a phone. It says my phone is rooted and it also says that abd is used on it. I downloaded a toolbox and started looking around and system processes that I tried to disable let's just say Facebook I have uninstalled it over seven times yet it keeps appearing is it because they are installed factory version and he's using Android auto which is another dumb program I never use and I have disabled it but somehow it always is enabled with all the permissions enabled.
By the way I have many of these files saved on external cards and I have logs on this. and this is not just one device its multiple devices in my household and I don't know why this guy chose me because I don't have anything of value he can take in real life that's just being honest
