Hey everyone, just wanted to let you rooted android users out there know that you can tether to your touchpad pretty easily.
Go download the newest version of wifi tether 3.1beta5
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Install it
Run it
Menu-Settings
Change Device-Profile
Select Samsung Fascinate
Change Setup-Method
Select Softap for Samsung (Master)
Back to main screen
And now you are good to go. I have used this on my fascinate running the community rom, also read that someone had it running on their charge as well.
Have fun tethering.
Post back if this does or doesn't work for you, what device, and what rom/kernal you are running.
MOD EDIT (LP): There is another guide here by danalo1979
[HELP] Touchpad won't recognize my Android Hotspot
I just finished checking, and while my android tablet recognizes and connects to my android cellphone tethering, my hp touchpad doesnt even see it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have no idea because I did not have a problem doing this on an evo

Get the beta tethered wifi app. The standard one from the market doesn't work with it. I think it can't connect to ad hoc routers our something.

I cannot seem to connect Touchpad to any adhoc WiFi network. Really would like a fix for this one. iPads and iPhones connect to adhoc networks just fine.
I would manually enter the ssid, broadcast id, network id and ip address and forget dealing with dhcp if it's not working
maybe reboot? Mine works flawlessly on my android and touchpad
From what Im gathering, my HTC hero uses ad-hoc and the touchpad doesnt pick that up. Shame, but I have a feeling Im SOL.
Try turning off all the security settings etc...

wifi tether 3.1 beta 2. Select epic 4g under device profile in settings. Worked fine for me last night when I tried it. Took a little to configure and started with errors but I just restarted it and it was good.

Some android phones can only broadcast wifi via adhoc mode which is incompatible with the touchpad. Its not a matter of what program you choose, if your phone can only do ad-hoc wifi then it wont work. Try using bluetooth (Wireless Tether 2.0.7)

Any idea what version to use for the photon? I tried this one and I just get errors. Thanks
Wifi tethering the touchpad works great using my HTC incredible (running CM7). Must be the ad-hoc issue others have mentioned.
i had issues getting my tp to connect to the wireless hotspot from my desire s.
as soon as i changed the security type from wpa2 to wpa it started working.

The reason for that might be that they are two different standards of encryption, lollol, neither is backward/forward compatible with the other

yes i know that. i'm not a dickhead.
the TP is supposed to support WPA2, however it had issues with WPA2 on my desire s.
This does not work for me Either-it keeps saying 'Tethering but with Errors-see Log' and the log cannot load the Sofap part...
I have a feeling some phones can only broudcast WiFi in Ad-Hoc-Like my HTC HERO It may be time to say goodbye to it after all...I was actually hoping the TouchPad would mean i dont need a new phone as most of my stuff (good Flash Web Browser/Email/Games/Whatsapp/Facebook) would be sorted between the two devices....Oh well....
I believe the easiest way to tether from your rooted Android to the Touchpad is if you're running CM7, to use the built in wi-fi tether as it works flawlessly!
i dont see this option for fascinate
Select Softap for Samsung (Master)
i only see WEXT (ad-hoc)
I've been trying to get my Epic 4G Touch running the wifi tether app 3.1-beta6 (only version I am aware works for my phone) but the View can't see the wifi connection. Perhaps something to do with the way wifi tether is running? Ad-Hoc mode? Anybody know of a work around?
I am running Wifi Tether v3.1 beta 2 on my Droid Charge with no issues. I currently have mine set to the Samsung Fascinate for the device. You could maybe try changing the device to see if that does anything. I know I was having issues connecting one day and I just had to uninstall and reinstall the app and it started working fine again.
Which type of wifi connection your phone presents is device dependent. Some can do infrastructure which will work, others can only do ad-hoc , which the Flyer and most android devices will not see without a modified wifi supplicant file. If your phone tether cannot be seen on your Flyer you need to install the wifi supplicant mentioned in other answers in the forum, do a search for supplicant . That is the only way to fix this, and you must be rooted.
I use Wireless Tether app on my rooted Droid X and the view sees it just fine. Connects without any issues.

+1 Me too was using it this morning.
I run WIFI Tether v3.1-beta7 on my EVO 3D with no issues at all, View connects without hesitation. There are some settings that need to be set, though I don't know if this applies to all devices. I had to enable MSS clamping and Routing fix.

I'm quoting DigitalMD because it appears this information may need to be repeated. I'm fairly certain that most Samsung devices are limited to ad-hoc only and that makes all the difference.
I'm downloading the wifi ad hoc enabler now to try this out...
I have a rooted Nexus S 4g on ICS- and wifitether works fine for my ipad2... but the HTC View doesn't even see the signal. Is this a carrier issue with the View, an HTC specific thing? I'm surprised the iPad had no issue as I've had plenty of public wifi connection issues...
Just trying to understanding the issues at play better here.

So I installed the latest 3.1-beta 11 to my Nexus S4g to try this before I go to other lengths to get the view to see it... but I don't see a MSS clamping options- only routing fix. I'm also trying device profile set to Evo 4g since that's what you had... still nothing...
Does it have anything to do with being on ICS on my Nexus? If you're doing adhoc from your evo (assuming...) why would the view not see ad hoc in my case?

Right, but to do that, i need the View to be rooted correct? The point i was trying to make was it seemed like some people got this to work without needing to do that...unless i misunderstood...
EDIT: The following worked for me- Fox Fi on the phone, "PDA NET for Tablet" application for the View. activate both... No settings to be changed, nothing needs root permission.
nexus S4g phone with ICS rooted codename ROM and stock HC HTCView. Tethered great.
Are there any roms or patches that will make the stock hotspot work? I am rooted.
wifi_tether_v3_1-beta5 works for me on 198_7 rooted. Set Device-Profile to 'Generic', setup method to 'Auto', I don't use encryption as I'm far enough away from neighbors not to worry. I use channel 6, 192.168.1.0/24 LAN, enable 'Routing Fix'. Comes configured with Google public DNS (8.8.8.8), works fine. Select 'Disable Wake Lock'. Works like a charm for me, 15+ Mbps down, 4+ up

Flash a new kernel that allows the wifi tethering, i recommend Jokersax11's 1.3 or 1.4 kernel, they work amazing and you can use any wifi tether in the market

No one has really find an interest in the stock hotspot we have to use wifi tether for now development on the photon isn't very big :/
Well there are different options on how to approach this, and it depends on which version of WirelessTether you are using. If you are using 2.0.7, your options are limited, but the 3.0 beta's are where the availability opens up on how many [Device-Profiles] you can choose from. You can reduce your output power to save battery with the older versions, but not the new ones for some reason.
Because Sprint has blocked you from downloading them, you have to sideload them. You can download it directly from google at: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ (Newest is Beta 11)
Here's what you do if you want to set it up in INFRASTRUCTURE MODE, otherwise it is defaulted as AD_Hoc:
Open up WirelessTether
Hit the *Menu* button and press Settings.
Under [Device Profile], select Google NexusOne (This is the most common profile for this mode, I've tried different ones. Most of them work)
Under [Setup Method], select Netd (master)
(If you wish to do so, select encryption and channel options.)
Scroll down and check [MSS Clamping]
Then when you press back and activate tethering, WT will hack and take over your stock Mobile Hotspot app and you will be broadcasting an Infrastructure network rather than an ADHoc one.
It is common to see "Mobile IP Response error" over and over again until your Photon finally handshakes itself into the network. Ignore it. Shouldn't take more than a minute if it doesn't do it on the first try.
Now you don't have to download any trial apps and turn this and that off... blah blah blah. You can also setup a widget to turn off tethering using this method.

When that happens, you have a Photon that needs to connect on 3G only first. Then after it's connected, you turn on 4G and let it take over the connection. It should work at that point.
Also make sure your bootloader is locked or you won't have 4G anyway.

Download the latest version here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Then place it on your SDcard and install. Make sure your phone will allow unknown sources by going to settings > application settings > and check unknown sources.
After the app installs open it up. Hit the menu soft key and select settings. In the settings, set the "Device-Profile" to Samsung Galaxy S2 and then set the "Setup-Method" to Netd (master). This will somehow enable the built-in mobile hotspot, which will give you infrastructure mode, which pretty much all computers like.
I also have MSS clamping checked. I dont have the Routing Fix checked. You can change the SSID and security settings if you want. Now, exit out of the settings and start tethering by touching the symbol in the middle of the screen. Now get on to your computer and find the network. Everything should work from there.
Good luck.
One more option
I just tried with "open garden wi-fi tether" on Stock with Jokers Higpro kernel and it works just fine.
If I remember proper when I ran the stock kernel tethering would connect but not transfer data. Kinda sound like what your problem is.

They still have PC/Laptops with Vista? SOB, I thought the FCC, FBI, CIA, Homeland Security and Sarah Palin all sued them and forced MicroSoft to purchase back all copies for MicroSoft's failure to disclose it was a POS? Even the drug cartels forced summlgers to use Vista Laptops for directions, they figured if they got caught, border guards would laugh so hard they could excape anyway!!!

By the way, I am also stock and rooted. Running 198_7 straight up with some bloat removed and wireless tether works fine for me.
I've unlocked my Rezound and rooted it. I checked the root and its says "congratulations, you are rooted" With that said... I downloaded WiFi Tehter (just as I did with my last HTC Incredible) and tried to hook up my Motorola Xoom. The Xoom won't recognized the Rezounds Wifi but my wife's laptop will but then it won't get online. As a matter of fact, my daughter's IPhone can recognize the Rezound tether and get online.
I have tried every combination of settings to no avail and am willing to try ANYTHING at this point.

download "root checker" from the app store (burrow apps)
start it up grant permission and be sure your rooted.
Also is your mobile data on? i know it sounds funny but i made this mistake before. no mobile data no tether but you can still connect.
also you need to be unlocked, on a custom recovery, and rooted.. i personally use an uninstaller to uninstall to the stock mobile hotspot app.. ive heard it interferes with the rooted apps.
Ok, Here's where I'm at:
On my HTC Rezound -
Device Profile - HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM)

Wifi-driver reload is checked
Enable Access-Control is not checked
Keep Alive is not checked
Shutdown Timer is not checked
Idle Shutdown is not checked
Quota Shutdown Limit is not checked
Lan-Network - 192.168.2.0/24
MSS Clamping is not checked
Routing Fix is checked
Preferred DNS - 8.8.8.8
Alt DNS - 8.8.4.4
And yes, the phone is rooted. I checked with the Root Checker program
On the Xoom:

Advenced settings-
Network Notification - not checked
Keep Wifi on during sleep - Always
Wi-Fi Frequency band - Auto
Mac address - 40:fc:89:f6:b2:09

So aggrevating!
I use the following settings on rezound for all roms. In WiFi tether:
