Hi Gang,
First post here. As per subject I would like to make Opera Mobile V 11.5.3 my default browser instead of the stock Android browser.
I have already done some research and found two suggestions, but neither have worked!
1/ Go to the Manage Applications->All->Browser and click clear defaults. On both Opera and Browser, the defaults is greyed out. :-(
2/ Open a link, say in an email, and when it asked for what to open with, click opera. I don't get that choice, just "browser" and "copy link" and "share link", no Opera.
The hardware is a Lenovo Ideapad A1, running Android 2.3.4. Not rooted. I am also using the Go Launcher Ex (which btw turns the A1 into something pretty decent).
I'm up for trying any suggestions!
TIA

Try re-installing Opera, then when you click on a link, check the box which says to use it as the default action then choose Opera.
tried, it no luck there. but thanks

Bump..
I also tried Dolphin - same problem. I even found a check box in Dolphin for the "Make Default Browser", but when I click it, suddenly up comes the crappy stock browser.
I wonder if Lenovo made that browser setting only accessible via root access. No, I haven't rooted the thing..... yet.
Help? Thanks
Try opening a html from sd card and when html is opening it will ask for browser notepad or other applications , try selecting opera and defaulting it here in this case
OK guys, here is my fix! It was rather heavy handed, but I just went and rooted the darn thing and removed the stock browser using Root Uninstaller.
I used paulnelson88's instructions from this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355319
The REAL trick was installing the ADB drivers. I had to google that, which yielded instructions on the google site.
If you don't install the drivers it won't work. There are a couple of other "tutorials" out there that don't mention the ADB drivers.
Now I'm free to totally screw up my tablet! Yeah!

So now that the new Firefox 4 Beta 5 is out, I personally think Firefox is the best Tablet browser available. Its unique approach to tabs works well on a tablet, as does the back button. The earlier versions were super slow, but I think this new one has caught up a lot. I now prefer it greatly to Dolphin HD.
I have installed the following add-ons to maximize my Nook Color internet use:
-Quit Fennec- force closes after last tab closes, a must
-Phony- easy User Agent changer, another must
-readability- fixes messy pages to fit
-Full Screen- Does what it says and makes browsing a joy
What do you all think?
I agree. Seems stable and fast (compared to Dolphin). I also used Sync to import all my passwords and favorites from my desktop.
I'll give it a try, it was even slower and klunkier than Dolphin HD last time I tried it, I use Opera 10 on my NC and it's great. I've tried Mirin too but something about that browser bugs me, can't really put my finger on it.
Can you guys post an apk? I can't get to it from market or Mozilla's website.
Thanks for the tip. Every browser seems to have 1 thing wrong with it so ill definitely give this one a try. I would like opwlera best but i can't get over the terrible way it handles initial zoom.
I agree, I can't find a working link to download the apk. I fennec but it installed an update that didn't work and now I can't install Firefox. Bummer
Would appreciate the apk as well. Thanks
FTP is your friend, as old-school as it is.
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...roid-r7/en-US/fennec-4.0b5-en-US.eabi-arm.apk
Thanks for the link. But everytime I try to install this, it seems to progress, asks about permissions, but at the end, says "program not installed". I've enabled usb debugging, used titanium backup to uninstall the previous left overs of Fennec, and I still get this message. A little stumped.
is this compatible with Android 2.1 with the latest dalingrin OC? I cannot get the apk to install. launched the Package Installer and installation would not get through saying "Application not installed"
Also each time I start the installer, it would warn that the app will replace an existing appl, but i do not currently have a fennec/firefox appl installed. Titanium Backup does not show any fennec/firefox app.
Can someone help please?
thanks
finally able to install by tweaking the the build.prop as suggested here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938114&highlight=firefox
if anyone else was having the same problem. that tweak fixed it for me.
I gave this a try based on this thread. While I do like the UI and it has a snappy response, the app itself is not ready for prime-time. If you try to enter numeric information into a field, it causes the insertion point to jump around. For example, I tried to visit the website for a local library and when it asked me to enter in my library card #, instead of "1234..." it would go "1243...". The insertion of characters as I typed them magically skipped around in the field. This was not isolated to just that website. Happened on a registration form on Adobe's site as well. Very annoying.
Looking forward to future updates.

I personally think Miren browser is the best for the nook. I have it set so that that status bar/tabs stays around all the time, and the floating buttons always hide. The only issue is that it doesn't work well with image links when they are opened in a new tab. In the new tab it will instead go to the link of the picture, not the actual link to the website. I will try this though, I tried the beta a long time ago so it will be nice to see how far they have come.

I have noticed this too. The only (painful) solution I have found is to very slowly type with a pause in-between each letter. Thank goodness it can sync with my desktop Firefox and slurp up all my passwords to avoid this mostly.
OMG SERIOUSLY? I tried Firefox last night for about 20 minutes and it GROUND TO A HALT each time I tried to search or put input in the URL bar. It'd freeze, if I tried to do anything I'd get the FC/Wait dialog, I hit Wait several times.. Finally killed it, tried again... Same thing. Eventually it'd load the page.
If you all think it's great, I wonder wtf is going on with my install. Maybe I need to uninstall it, make sure any old sdcard stuff is cleaned (I had it installed a few betas ago) and try again. Totally unusable for me right now.
I'm hoping the FF Deskop Ad Block Pro extension works with the FF mobile soon. That can make the internet a much more bearable place.
Works for me. But can't t flash to work. Works in dolphin and stock

Yeah, Flash doesn't work so far.
New to the Forum. Just received my G tab last night (Woot deal). Loaded TNT 4.4. A few questions:
1. I can copy and paste in the gmail app but not in the browser, why?
2. How do you open new tabs in the browser (for instance by holding on an address like on my droid). I know you can open new tabs but I want to load them like the Droid if possible.
3. Menu Key does not work in browser but works elsewhere, why?
4. Some apps I have on my Droid do not appear in the market, why is this?
5. Can I set a password for the device?
Thanks in advance for any responses. Love the G Tab and TnT Lite, thank you all for developing such great upgrades for the G.
1. Ditto on the password.
2. I've been able to install 4 apps from the market. The angry bird series and Stupid Zombies. Everything else crashes the UI when it hits the install phase (firefox, openoffice viewer, connectbot, etc). The apps download fine, but when it tries to install I drop back to the booting animation (Xoom?) and then I'm back to the unlock screen.
I've searched the forums and haven't found anything on #2.
#2 is not related to 4.4.0. I opened another thread and solved it myself. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12555057 (sorry for the hijack).
On #1, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12542977&postcount=3. The solution is to setup a link to the security pref screen that is hidden. No info on how to do that and I don't see it as an option on my tablet.
Installing apps
I don't have a problem installing apps. Just with the other things. Thanks for the link, will come in useful seeing as I have not installed a tons of apps yet and may still encounter this. Thanks for the replies!
any luck on #3? Mine doesnt work either
has anyone figured out how to setup the link to configure a password yet?
Anyone fix the menu button YET?
The browser that came with TNTL 4.4 was not very good in my opinion, so I installed Dolphin HD browser. It is much better and the menu button works on it giving you many options.
yes I have the same problem. I did the market fix and I still have missing applications. When I try to download online it says I dont have a device? doesn't recognize gtab-tnt-Lite.. the stock browser on this doesn't even let you select text, I couldn't even find dolphin hd browser :/ was there a new update that I missed?
you'll need to try to apply one of the numerous market fixes (search the forums and i'm sure you'll find several).
The one that finally seemed to work permanently for me was the "edit the build.prop" file method.
You are definitely going to want to grab Dolphin HD. MUCH better then the stock browser....
Hey guys I seem to have lost my Gingerbread stock browser. I was playing with widgets and I wanted to make some space and "removed" my browser from the home panels..not the application panel. Now when I went into applications I cannot seem to find my stock browser!! How do I get it back?! Please help this is very annoying...
Also I don't want to use any other browser..I tried dolphin, and various others..I am not happy with them. Stock seemed to be the smoothest, fastest, and appealing browser to me.
You can't delete the stock browser. Did you check and recheck all the icons in your app drawer? It could be there, I know myself looking over an app for like 10 times, then discover I have it installed when going through the market.
Try a reboot or something, I hope it'll help.

I did a reboot. I'm not sure what you mean by app drawer? Is that the same as the "application" menu with all the apps installed? I'm new to android I just got the Galaxy S2 two days ago, so bare with me. I did the google search in my phone also to help me find it, and it cannot locate it. In fact you need the browser for it so when it asked me to view a web page it asked to use "dolphin" or "skyfire" not my "Internet" browser.
You can't delete Stock browser. You may have deleted the Widget but no way one can remove the system browser. Even I doubt it if it's possible to delete by TB, so it must there in Menu.
Regards.
Yes the App Drawer is the official name for the menu with all the icons. It's very weird you could remove the stock browser. And that you can't select it anymore.
Does your phone give any errors when using the dialer (the app you use to call someone)? Since the SGS2's Dialer.apk relies on the Browser.apk (filename for an android app), weirdly enough.
You cannot remove an app when using the home menu. At least not using the stock TouchWiz interface.
If you have no errors or problems, it HAS to be there.
This happend to me to on my galaxy tab. I think I did it with titanium back up. I don't know how you did it but you can reflash stock software with odin and get it back. You might lose your data.
It's working now. I spent a few hours trying to figure out what happen to the browser! I gave up. Funny thing is before this issue I flashed my ROM to Litening 3.2 I didn't like the bugs on it..especially the very heavy laggy internet bug! So I got a new browser didn't like it. While I was moving my widgets around I usually "remove" them and go back to my app draw to place them again where I want. I went to my app draw...no internet browser. After unable to figure it out..I reflashed my ROM back to the previous litening ROM 3.0. Then what do you know the browser came back! It has nothing to do with litening ROM, but I'm guessing it has a browser.apk in it so it installed it for me again.
What is the obsession with Android web browsers and new tabs?! Dolphin Browser HD, my preference, is great but EVERY TIME I want it to open a link it opens in a new tab. EVERY TIME I click a link from a desktop widget Dolphin opens and creates a new tab. Why? My desktop browser overwrites the content on the tab I have open unless I tell it not to. Mostly I prefer that. I don't need instant access to the last three tabs I had open yesterday. Why is there not a control to change that behavior? Seems so simple. Dolphin has no control for DO NOT open in new tab. Neither does Opera for Android. Neither does Firefox for Android.
try chrome beta instead.
chrome beta opens link in the same tab, but when you long-press on a link, you have a few options, like "open in new tab"
AFAIK only Chrome does that but u need ICS in order to install it
It doesn't do it to me everytime. But regardless I cant sway away from dolphin HD. The only problem i have had with Dolphin HD is downloading things.
There's a setting in Dolphin to control this. I don't know where it is. Try contacting Dolphin support.

Try Boat Browser. I've been using it since my droid charge and onto my razr maxx. Allows new tab controls. Other very cool features to go with it as well. Completely replaced my stock browser

Aye it does, but Chrome beta is ICS-only. It worked wonderfully on my Galaxy Nexus, and I was sad to find out it doesn't work here
Just be aware that some websites default to opening external links in new tabs. vBulletin forums do this, and XDA is vB if I'm not mistaken. So, it's not necessarily a browser issue.
Not sure if this is old news or not...
1) Download & Install 'archived flash' from adobe site flash for android 4.x @ http://download.macromedia.com/pub/...roid/11.1.115.27/install_flash_player_ics.apk
(if not there search google for 'adobe archived flash player')
* Make sure you go into settings and put a checked box by unknown sources or it won't let you install it since the apk you just download is not from the google play. Afterward, you can go back and uncheck it for better security.
2) Install Dolphin for Pad v1.0 @ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dolphin.browser.pad&hl=en
* After installation, go through the wizard and change the agent to Desktop (or change it later in Dolphin's Agent in settings)
It's been working on most flash site for me
I have flash on my dolphin browser, I installed same version of flash as you linked to and deleted some setting within the data folder of dolphin browser (I don't remember exactly where on XDA I found the post).
How does the dolphin for pad work compared to the normal dolphin browser? Is it betteR?

Not really. Dolphin for Pad hasn't been updated in months and user reviews reflect the lack of interest from the developer.

yes, it is better for me.
Latest regular dolphin has feature disable that will not work with flash.
You have to restore old dolphin version to get it working with flash. When I did that, it was superslow and stuttering almost unusable for me that I can't even watch some streaming sports channel on it so I gave up and tried others...and found this work smoother and faster for me despite others low review. As long as it works for my Nexus 10, I didn't care about the reviews. I don't need all the features other negative reviewers were asking.

I need to try this, have chrome, ocean and boat browser on mine, and ocean supposedly allows it but it freezes when I start a video, boat and chrome don't detect the flash I already have installed, so I'm gonna try this , hopefully I can get it going , specially since I just got my HDMI to micro HDMI cable to connect it to my HDTV .
