This method has been confirmed to work on all models of the Xperia PLAY - R800x / R800i / R800a / R800at. Also works perfectly with the Xperia Arc.
WARNING: This doesn't work, however, on the Verizon Wireless R800x v2.3.2. Please update to v2.3.3 before rooting. - confirmed by paxChristos
WARNING #2: Confirmed that this doesn't work with 4.0.2.A.0.62
MAJOR WARNING - ICS (4.x) doesn't work with it & any update to GB (2.3.x) after November 2011 won't either.

NOTE: Before you attempt to root your phone, please ensure that you have the Android SDK installed. It has the adb binary within it.

All needed files have been attached for this process to work correctly.
Note: I didn't create zergRush. I only found the method to implement permanent root after zergRush has done its job.

Update: Updated as per DooMLoRD's v4.0 script with zergRush binary of 21 Nov 2011 and with makespace which deletes Google Maps if there is not enough space.(< 6MB)
Hello
I am completely new to Android but not at all new to Linux.
I used paxchristos script (ran commands manually though) to root my Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. (WT19i / Android 2.3.4 / Build 4.0.2.A.0.58)
Source threads used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18615502
In an attached file, I fixed/modified/added few things in paxchristos script. Here is the detail:
1) Fixed error in symlinking su. (source/destination were same)
2) Don't delete (and recreate) /data/local/tmp/ directory unnecessarily, just delete its contents
3) Uses dd instead of cp (because DooMLoRD's script does, dont know why!). Update: as per anantshri, dd is used because cp has been known to give errors.
4) If your system already has 'adb' then it uses system 'adb' instead of one in zip-archive.
5) Updated zip archive to contain the latest files from DooMLoRD's archive (paxchristos archive seemed old)
Please try/verify and let me know if I missed something.
Thanks.

Code:
adb shell mkdir /data/local/tmp
adb push zergRush /data/local/tmp
adb chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/zergRush
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp/
./zergRush
adb remount
adb push su /system/bin
adb push su /system/xbin
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/xbin/su
exit
adb install Superuser.apk
Alternate: adb push Superuser.apk /system/app
installed BusyBox (if it doesn't show up on the system already) via any busybox installer market app
Ran SuperUser & verified settings
Code:
adb reboot

Big thanks to all involved, I will be trying this asap.
Is there a way to un-root? Just curious...
Step-by-literal-step
If you feel like seeing the step by step PDF Guide, go to these : attached to post #1, or:
At dropbox.com: http://db.tt/RaAUnzjW
At Ubuntu one: http://ubuntuone.com/64OujxgkGMv1N2QSoPmXin
or at Filesonic: http://www.filesonic.com/file/2730341354
If you're doing the script rooting in linux, do these things first
1) Download and unzip file (it's below at dropbox.com or ubuntu one; or it's posted in #1 as an attachment)
2) open up terminal
3) type "su"
4) enter your password
4a) if you don't have su set up
4b) type "passwd"
4c) enter you username password (no, there will be no ***s to show that you entered anything, just hit enter when you've inputted your password)
4d) input a password for root (unix) (no, there will be no ***s to show that you entered anything, just hit enter when you've inputted your password)
4e) type "su" and enter your password
5) navigate to location you unzipped the file to (chrome default download is /home/[your username]/Downloads)
6) type "chmod 755 runme-linux"
7) type "cd files"
8) type "chmod 755 adb"
9) type "cd .."
10) type "./runme-linux"
11) type "exit" x2 to exit terminal
12) enjoy your rooted play!
Here's the script (and all applicable files) (totally ripped off DooMLoRD's code, thank him, please, for me), go to these links:
At dropbox.com: http://db.tt/a4H6QFfV
At Ubuntu one: http://ubuntuone.com/7mD63kpsKzGmaou5hcftBV
Here's the linux script code
Code:
#!/bin/bash
#This is DooMLoRD's script for windows. I've ported it to linux
#Somethings to remember
#1) Chmod this file!! ("chmod 777 runme-linux")
#2) Run this script as su in terminal (if you haven't set up your su password run the command "passwd" in terminal, it'll ask you for your username password, and then you'll type in a root password. NOTE: You will not see any changes (i.e. *** representing typed letters) but the password is still being inputted.

Thank you to: cl8rs for stumbling up zergRush,
Ch4lky, ieftm, and the Revolutionary team for making (and updating zergRush)
CrimsonSentinal13 for getting us from adb root to phone rooted!
DooMLoRD for doing the script in windows, and giving me something to work off of!
Have fun people, and enjoy!!
Note: With the stock kernal, we cannot overclock, but you can underclock your cpu
Note2: Drivers were added to the first post (Crimsonsentinal13) for sake of keeping everything simpler added drivers for Xperia Play -- to get them to work (if you don't already have them installed, goto device manager, find the SEMC driver (it might show up as android device or unknown device) then update driver, and point it to this zip (unzipped, of course)
Note3: Android SDK Download link: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Note4: Unrooting?? Who would want to unroot?? One way I unrooted (using my wife's Casio Commando was to uninstall superuser.apk, and the busybox installer (i know, i didn't get rid of everything) but at that point, unless the Verizon/Phone Company employee is a genius, they won't know whether or not you're rooted
Note5: OTA Updates. We don't know what'll happen. If one comes, DENY until we can figure out what'll happen... Most likely, it'll just lose root (hopefully temporarily, we won't know until we get there) but if it bricks all the rooted Plays, I don't want an angry mob with pitchforks at my or Crimsonsentinals13's doorstep
Note6: Updated guide!! Hopefully I fixed all the errors that were in there before (thank you to all the users that pointed them out to me) and added a few things.
Note6B: Somebody had a problem with a busybox installer not downloading from the android market. attached a free one off android market that I used. I only have guesses why this happened (pm setInstallLocation 2...?) but here one is so you have that option as well...
Note6C:I also attached insecure adb. Insecure ADB is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL and should only be downloaded and installed AFTER YOU HAVE ROOT if you want to use root in adb after you reboot. Again COMPLETELY OPTIONAL and you won't necessarily need it.
Note7: As jeffkhlam found out, at no point do you need fastboot. This doesn't unlock the bootloader (no custom roms.)
Note8: If you're having issues doing this, I'll be hopping on and off the thread between 8:00am until about 11:00pm Central Standard Time. If it's not between those hours, please wait, we'll get around to helping you!

Yes that's correct it's only for root apps etc. You need to unlock your bootloader for flashing custom roms and kernels. So no CyanogenMod without unlocking your BL.

Is this is also the correct steps for r800i's ?

zergRush isn't a directory, it's a binary. Using the cd command won't work on it.
See the guide I posted, now has info to get past annoying stutters
Anybody stuck at step 16, input the following commands
1) cd /data/local/tmp
2) rm boomsh

4) continue on with rooting!

Haha, slightly faster.
A tip for you : if you want to create a fast root image, you can create a tarball of an existing rooted image in adb shell and extract that to your working-system image (the one to be rooted):
Code:
tar -cpvzf preroot-pack.tgz /system/app/Superuser.apk /system/app/su /system/xbin/
(including the /system/xbin if you have busybox, so that you don't have to do the tedious flash+repack method)

echo Montando imagen...
mkdir system; mount -o loop system.img system
echo Borrando apps...
rm -r system/etc/customization/applications

Hi Yakandu,
Thanks a lot for this piece of code, it helps me understant how to customize firmware
I have a question about that. When the script finishes, how do you use the system2.img created ? Is Flashtool able to use it or do you have a way to get a system2.sin back ?
Cheers.
How to root my xperia s?
Here you go

Please, to root this firmware, i use the same method on this topic?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23868276 (Connect device in fastboot mode (blue LED).
Open Command prompt and type: fastboot flash system system_xps_prerooted_63fw.img - This will give you root immediatly after reboot!)
Or, i need flash stock rom and flash preroot image with Flash tools ? (If yes, with flash tools, the sistem image i place in folder "firmware" ?)
I am asking for help because I am new to this device and did not understand that part.
Already unlocked my bootloader.
Thanks.

But I want to make root without changing the kernel (DoomKernel), because I've been reading that has some minor bugs.
The methods I mentioned just above, are correct?
The script given here quite help alot but I'm still blur about root the firmware...
haih...
The system is stable now on my tab, don't forget, you have only 256MB of RAM, i cannot make the impossible Lots of tweaks are include into the kernel and the ROM to have a fast tab...!

-------------------------------------------------------------SYSTEM INSTALLATION-------------------------------------------------------------
How install CM9 on archos gen8
-Download CM9 image files from mediafire that i have shared, choose appropriate image.
-Download initramfs.cpio.gz (NOT MINICOM except i tell you to install it for a report)
-Download Kernel in attachment files (don't uncompress the Kernel file, just rename it like this: zImage)
-Download data.img.tar.gz and uncompress it - choose the data image that you want and renamed it like data_ICS.img
Install Kernel and initramfs.cpio.gz
-install kernel and initramfs.cpio.gz (don't install the minicom version) by SDE menu
-Don't uncompress the Kernel file, just rename it like this: zImage
-Just copy-paste, ONE BY ONE the kernel and initramfs.cpio.gz (if I paste together the files, it doesn't worked for me)
/!\ BUT BIZCUITE, I HAVE A PROBLEM, THE TAB SAYS ME THAT zImage IS NOT INSTALLED, AAAAAAAAH!!!!!PLEAAAASE HEEELP
=>You have WINDOWS please read this!!!
Install CM9 Image:
-uncompress image of CM9 downloaded
-copy paste image on the root of internal sdcard (like CM7)
-uncompressed data.img.tar.gz if it's not done, choose an image and rename it like data_ICS.img
-copy/paste the data_ICS.img to the root of the internal sdcard.
How configure menu.lst (See the file in attachment, just uncompress it)
-edit your menu.lst, copy paste my line
Code:
CYANOBIZ||/CYANOBIZ_BETA2.X_AX.img|/init|0Archos|ARCHOS|ARCHOS|/init
Change "CYANOBIZ_BETA2.X_AX.img" by the version and the type of tab that you have downloaded
Exemple: CYANOBIZ_BETA2.4_A101.img
If you haven't the file. Create a file named "menu.lst" with notepad++ under windows (not the windows notepad!!!) Or gedit for ubuntu.
And copy paste the line on it. Save and copy paste the file on the root of the internal sdcard.
-------------------------------------------------------------GOOGLE APP. INSTALLATION-------------------------------------------------------------
How install Google App.
If you have NEVER installed GApp:
-Download the file
-Rename the file like this "gapps-ics-20120429-signedremake_all_dpi_works.zip" ( just WITHOUT the "-" )
-Copy paste the file in the download folders of your internal SDCARD
-Reboot
-After the first reboot wait 5 minutes (the system uncompresses the files and install its)
-Reboot and enjoy
-------------------------------------------------------------BLUETOOTH ACTIVATION-------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to have Bluetooth
In a terminal enter:
Code:
hciconfig hci0 up
-------------------------------------------------------------SWAP CONFIGURATION-------------------------------------------------------------
SWAP / Zram / CompCache:
The swap is used with this priority:
Code:
[email protected]:/ # cat /proc/swaps
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/swapfile file 179156 5716 -1
/dev/block/zram0 partition 51192 0 -2
/dev/block/ramzswap0 partition 175464 0 -3
This the new swap_activation.sh
Code:
swapoff /dev/block/ramzswap0
swapoff /dev/block/zram0
echo $((50*1024*1024)) > /sys/block/zram0/disksize
mkswap /dev/block/zram0
swapon /swapfile
swapon /dev/block/zram0
swapon /dev/block/ramzswap0
Just change the order of this lines to start differently the swap.
First to start : swapon /swapfile
second to start: swapon /dev/block/zram0
last to start: swapon /dev/block/ramzswap0
Play with this lines to see if performance are better.
-------------------------------------------------------------OVERCLOCK-------------------------------------------------------------
HOW OVERCLOCK THE CPU
just change the value with a root explorer into the file at this path:
/sys/power/mpu_freq_opp5
YOU WILL LOSE THE CHANGE AFTER A REBOOT
but if you find your oc stable write the line in the init.rc, under " # Enabling power management features":
Code:
write /sys/power/mpu_freq_opp5 1100
-------------------------------------------------------------SOFT TO USE-------------------------------------------------------------

/!\ To make a report /!\ MINICOM version of initramfs is required.
YOU DON'T USED ADB (select NONE option) .. JUST MINICOM (SERIAL option)
I used the initramfs.cpio.gz with debug by serial made by Divx118.
install minicom and enter in a terminal under root rights:
"minicom -D /dev/ttyACM2" (when you are after selection of debug types screen and when OS screen selection appears press "enter" don't forget to plug usb cable )
The minicom must be connected. and DMESG log appears on terminal.
CONFIGURE YOUR TERMINAL TO HAVE UNLIMITED CHARACTERS ON THE SCREEN (else log will be cut)
See the tutorial about debug on Openaos website

DON'T TRY TO COMPILE ATM, IT'S JUST A BETA VERSION OF THE HOW - I HAVEN'T TEST IT!!
How to compile CyanoBiz:
Make sure that you have Ubuntu 10.04 or 12 - 64Bits - 4GB of RAM - 100GB free on HD and a Quad core CPU is better to compile it (i have 4GB of RAM and a little Core2duo 1.6GHz - dual core on a T60P Lenovo - HD of 300GB).
Go to your work foder. i have put it directly in my home directory, done it as you want.
mkdir -p ./BIZ_ICS
PATH=~/bin:$PATH
curl https://dl-ssl.google.com/dl/googlesource/git-repo/repo > ~/bin/repo
chmod a+x ~/bin/repo
repo init -u git://github.com/CyanogenMod/android.git -b ics-release

Wait that the download is finished....
Download my github and uncompress the framework, device and hardware zip files (not update ATM).

-./framework/base
-./hardware/...
-./device/archos/g8

Have you any cable connected on the tab and have you seen this?
Others things:
If you want to power on your tab without make any debug, don't forget to disconnect the tab from the USB computer.
If you do that, the CM9 doesn't want boot.
DISCONNECT USB CABLE IF YOU HAVEN'T MINICOM RUNNING
Retry without cable please and with the new kernel!!
Try to see if you have any log on terminal if it doesn't worked

Please report about Touchscreen it's very important for me (and for you if you want a CM9 who works on your tab )
Make a report like this:
Model of tab: Archos xx
Touchescreen works: yes / no
Another bug (except if it writes on first post)
Remember: the first boot takes time the dexopt is active 2-3 minutes to have unlock screen.

Biz,
I've flashed the new kernel, booted back into CM. I've been sitting at the bootsplash for 20 minutes now. Attachment below.
Is it safe to try it on A70S with "kboot" installed? Seconds question that I'd like to know is that the touchscreen isnt currently working, right?

I don't know if it works with kboot, the kernel is based on CM7 kernel, if it works with it i think that yes!!
Touchscreen for A70S doesn't work (except if it uses Hanvon TS, it must work now), yes and i need a full log to fix it if i can (without tab it's very difficult).

I will pm you and see it later.

the last thing that I see when I boot is some cyano guy who is traveling in space. Do I have to wait longer or its the unlock screen and my touchscreen isnt working?
EDIT: Rename your data.img to something else.
EDIT2: Can u help me run adb successfully, I've tried many times with guides but it was not for gen8 and I couldnt make it run. I really wanna join.
EDIT3: It booted. The touchscreen on A70S is working only at the upper left side (I can pull down the statusbar and enable/disable wifi). Nothing else is working on touchscreen. Hope it helps you cuz I cant run adb.

I don't think that rename data.img is usefull:
look the init.rc:
Code:
mount ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/storage
mount vfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/storage
mount ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /mnt/system
# mount ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 /data nosuid nodev
# mount ext4 [email protected]/mnt/storage/data.img /data nosuid nodev
data.img is not mount i used only data folder IN the image.
I need a log to see what's appened, i will retry my rom upload when i will be at home
If you have any linux machine you can try to see if there are crash errors when you mount the image in the data folder and tombstones folder
To mount image file enter:
mount -o loop /media/A70S/openaos-cm.img /mnt/
look the path of your tab, maybe it's not the same.

I dont have a linux machine. Is there any tutorial "how to set up minicom" or what is it?
bootlooping for about 10 mins on a101it using kboot, is it related to kboot i wonder, anyway il see if i can pull logs later, right now i got to go somewhere?

I don't know if it works with kboot, the kernel is based on CM7 kernel, if it works with it i think that yes!!
Touchscreen for A70S doesn't work (except if it uses Hanvon TS, it must work now), yes and i need a full log to fix it if i can (without tab it's very difficult).
You have a harddrive version, that's the pb, there is no error who permit me to fix it ATM.
I will pm you and see it later.
Edit: i have seen that all your log is cut, can you remake it with a more larger terminal (or more little char.) to have all lines

I can expand the terminal window, but I already changed the profile for unlimited scrolling. The entire log as it was recorded should be there. I can produce another one with a maximized terminal window if that will help. Log attached.

Your best bet if you want to get serious on testing and debug is to install a linux distro. Since android was born from linux, it's much easier to get the work done from a linux platform. Your best best would be to used an Ubuntu based distro, like Ubuntu or it's variants, or Linux Mint. If you use that, I can give you instructions on what you need to get rolling. PM me if you are interested in doing that.
Yes I am interested in installing Linux. Anyway I found something. On A70S the TS seems to be miss calibrated, I entered settings and enabled the cursor (something that displays my touch direction) and it seems like its miss calibrated for a bigger screed or bigger resolution. Hope it helps.

It is not related to kboot I think, i have A70S with kboot and the only difference between them both is the large screen that 101 has.

Sent from my SK17i using xda premium

& yes I'll see how to delete them odex files in other tut or thread or if did'nt find it will ask how to
but the way the galaxy devs did it looks good and easy to use for me
since it needs sited help and i like to do such things my self if possible.
Hello Everyone,
Today I bought a ASUS MeMO Pad for my mum to use and released that the usual stock launcher isn't really noob friendly or has much customization available.
I am really keen to make it look like the Samsung Tab 2, hence touchwiz. Apart from the obvious answer to use one of the many launchers available in Google Play, is there a way to mod the ASUS MeMO Pad, or installing trebuchet, even if it means rooting. Basically is there a way to transform it to look and feel like a Samsung Tab?
Thanks!
i bothered to stay up 24hrs. Basically use apktool thingy! Also read fibe print wants to be in root directory on your computer.
And signing it makes it fail for me.
Anyhow after you got it the way u want compile.
Then: Install script runner, write a script to: su itself, the mount the /system/ as rewritable, next make back up your old one, pref two places(make dir ahead of time), then script should also: copy the new SystemUI.apk and chmod the new apk, sleep 10, chmod again! Sleep for 20 (keep hitting the ok button don't panic) the new apk should start, slide down the status thingy. Then after your sleep 20 make sure to put the orginal back and chmod twice. The script finished. If problems reboot. NP.
Now if all is well rerun that same scritp and put "echo " on all lines we don't need again ie backing up switchroo!
Or make 2 script like me, emergency-bka-replacer; testing-swapper. And manually make dir/copy backups with a file manager.
Please note! MANUALLY COPY SystemUI.apk from the /system/priv-app/ directory to a safe place on your sd card got it??????
please note if u in bind just push the ok button you get .5 to 2 seconds to do an action. Navigate is slow you can still do most. Hold select is really hard!
Please also note to chmod 777 or 776 u can fix later. You HAVE TO DO THIS, sd card is fat32 does not handle file perms!!!!!
Please note that memopad 176cx sucks! =P xpose is your best friend, and a system app mover, or normal u can disable apps now.
Please note, linux IS CASESENSITIVE, google bash for cmds if needed.
Okay okay its a dark theme with a Starwarz pallete looks pretty good!
My Scritp example:
su
echo replacer script
mount -o remount, rw /system/
cp /storage/emulated/0/unsignednew/SystemUI.apk /system/priv-app/
chmod 777 /system/priv-app/SystemUI.apk
echo copied
sleep 10
cp /storage/emulated/0/unsignednew/SystemUI.apk /system/priv-app/
chmod 777 /system/priv-app/SystemUI.apk
sleep 20
echo does it work?
chmod 777 /system/priv-app/SystemUI.apk
cp /storage/emulated/0/abka/SystemUI.apk /system/priv-app/
chmod 777 /system/priv-app/SystemUI.apk
chmod 777 /system/priv-app/SystemUI.apk
echo you should see this if the script finished
Here is the file+screenshots for now in next reply

Here is new apk, (unsigned works 4 me) unsigned/signed/myorginal/scriptexample
11mb urlis{tinyurl.com/z9o52ut}
Avoid conflicts DELETE OR BACK UP SystemUi.odex in /system/pri-apps. New will not work with this file!
No cross-site linking! If my dropbox gets slamed I will pull teh file.
