Hi guys,
I upgraded my plan and got OSGSII from an AT&T store.
The person said that it requires at least 2 GB data plan for at least 6 months.
I simply said okay there, but at home, I could not find anything related to that matter.
So I am suspecting that he was making me pay extra 10 bucks for nothing since I do not use 4G that much.
I wanted to confirm with the xda community. Any thoughts on this?
With a smartphone you are required to purchase a data plan

You were misguided by the representative.
You need a data plan, but you can definitely get the 200MB plan.
It does not required the 2Gb plan. you can choose to go with the 200MB for $15/month. what that sales rep said is bs. You can make the changes from your account online if you like.

Thanks guys.
I just degraded 2GB data plan to 200mb one. It should save me a few bucks a months
watch out tho you go over and they charge you $10 a month extra.

I think it is more on the 200mb plan to encourage users to pick the 2gb.
Sort of off topic but is there a way to get into an unlimited plan?

Everyone have unlimited data. You just have to pay for it if you go over your tired plan.
Unlimited is no longer offered however you can apparently use a Iphone 2g, activate it and get the unlimited edge plan, then use a newer phone and upgrade the plan to unlimited.
Personal accounts with smartphones will require a minimum plan of
$15 for 200MB of data at which it's an additional $15 for another 200MB if you go over.
You can also do $25 for 2GB, $10 for an additional 1GB if you go over.
$45 for 4GB+tethering, $10 for an additional 1GB if you go over.
In some cases, some business accounts will only allow for a $25 data plan for the smartphones on it.
And yes, there's a way to get unlimited

this rep just wanted to make money off of you. If you keep the feature he added for 6 months then his company and he will not get charge back. This is how authorized dealers work
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
Lmao, didn't read other replies but he was probably lying to you. If it was a third party retailer, he may have been telling the truth (Often they screw you by requiring certain plans, give you a cheaper phone, but giving it to you doggie style while forcing you into a plan that you don't need and charging you hundreds of dollars if you change it). If it was a core store, we get chargebacks if something is changed in a negative way within the first 6 months, so that's a possibility. They'll often add additional features, extra late / ETF's, etc.
So yeah, phones may b e cheaper at a third party, but often times you're forced into something far more expensive. If he was a corporate AT&T rep though, I suggest you not only speak to his manager, but go above and beyond that and find out who the area / director is.

Randomly though, if you have any form of discount that's above 10%, the 2gb plan is the way to go. Most people use 400+ MB so it makes sense.. I sorta feel like if people are using less than 200mb, they either spend their entire time at home or work with a wifi connection, or they shouldn't have a smartphone.

Go on eBay and search unlimited data at. I use someone with reef in his name, it takes about a day and was kind of a hassel but surely enough I have unlimited data now for $30 a month. There is an xda thread under the Motorola atrix about it also.

Yeah i don't think it matters going to a COR location or authorized retailer, as long as it's not Walmart or Radio Shack, it's dependent on your rep, and some reps truly don't give a ****. COR reps are in a union tho so they really have to mess up to get fired.
Basically, unless you're under specific restrictions which i can't imagine a single scenario OR on a business account specifically requiring the larger data plan, you can have which ever you want!

Are you still a kid, a pupil, a student?
'Cuz if you are a working man, here's the time
7am: wake up, doing personal stuff, drinking coffee, watching TV and use wifi to access internet.
9am: start driving to work. You know that you should NEVER surf webs or play game while driving, right?
At work: you either
a. spend 8 hours working
b. using company wifi.
7pm: driving home. R u watching Netflix while driving?
At home: hello, wifi
Midnite: sleeping time.
Weekend? even more wifi.
Me, personally, don't know why people spend a lot of mobile data unless they live in the area that don't have wifi.
I personally find it impossible to use less than 500mb a month even if i'm being frugal. The 2GB plan is the best choice unless you physically disable data and only enable it when needed.

3g watchdog also does that. FWIW, I get along on a 200MB plan just fine, but I'm on wifi a lot. Unless you're streaming movies or music or browsing a lot, it's a pretty solid plan.

They don't throttle if you are on an unlimited plan unless you are in the top 5%. I had a customer last month who used 28GB in one month streaming netflix all day every day. Needless to say he was being throttled. They actually put a code on your account if you are being throttled that any rep can see and they send you an automated text message. So it is not a surprise, so unless you got this text then you are experiencing slower speeds for some other reason.

I've downloaded 8gigs in a month before without being throttled.
If you're leaving AT&T, you have these options:
Verizon. Basically the same as AT&T except a few dollars more. No unlimited data. They throttle.
T-Mobile. Crappy coverage. Less expensive. Throttles you after 2 gigs.
Sprint. Crappy coverage. Unlimited data with no throttling, but it's only a matter of time until their customer base grows and their network has to stop unlimited and start throttling. You'll be in the same position eventually with crappier coverage.
Random bad credit carrier: Good luck with that.

If it really bothers you, then switch to the 3gb data plan.
If it bothers you even more, file an official FCC complaint. Many people already have.
We throttle the top 5%. The top 5% varies per market. I regularly pass 10gb and I have had no message on my personal account.
And think about what your other options are.
-2gb on T-Mobile
-Limited LTE data on Verizon, same as us. (they throttle too)
-Sprint - sure you get unlimited. but they have the slowest data out of all the carriers
So we have to bend over and take it? That's what we are doing now.

So your saying anybody that uses more then 2-3 gbs is in the "top 5%"? I just got the text that I'm approaching the top 5% and I'm just over 3gbs. I agree with the OP it's a load of BS if I sign up for something that's labeled unlimited it should be unlimited. I think its BS that they throttle it so low most apps like YouTube wont even work right. And for the government stepping in that'll take some REAL change in government, there is to much money changing hands in politics for real change to happen and get rid of the corporate government take over. I can't believe for one second that only 5% of at&t customers use less then 2gbs a month. If they started throttling at like 10 or so i would have no problem but after 2-3 they want us to get rid of our unlimited and go to a tiered plan so they can charge a crap ton of money and line their pockets just like the rest of the corporate greed out there!!!

The amount at which you get throttled varies per market.
And I disagree with it too. It sucks.
The fact that you say that it varies from market to market sounds like its very ripe for abuse on their part. I can't see how it could be justifiable to throttle me at a little over 3gb when you are using over 10 a month. Sounds like you know an end around the very system you work for. It all boils down to corporate greed and the fact that we in the USA have let companies like this get away with so much for so long that its just 2nd nature and everybody wants to say its the consumers fault.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I had a text 1 day before my cycle ended saying I am approaching the top 5%
Now you ask how much data I had used do you.... 1.5 gb
Now that is complete horse sh*t
Guys verizon does not currently throttle LTE customers, they do throttle 3g.
as for the APN tricks...we are noticing on the Skyrocket forum that for many it is not working any more.
The best you can do is continue to call in and have the specific throttle call response center note your account of any issues you are experiencing while throttled (i.e. I was throttled for 8 days during my last billing cycle and no web pages would load, text messaging stopped working, the market gave no connection errors, mms was not working at all) so that they know this is doing more harm than simply limiting speeds.
That and file a SPECIFIC FCC complaint. So far FCC complaints have done nothing but initiate a contact from ATT that this is the new policy.
The major problem is that as the throttle policy continues, the top 5% will drop as people use less data. This and the fact that the call center uses the consumer calling in to complain as an opportunity to have them switch to a tiered plan, on which they will not be throttled.
The given response is intended by ATT to be
1. The throttle policy is intended to be a temporary solution to the evergrowing need for growing spectrum and the currently congested network.
2. For immediate relief one can use wifi when available and one does have the option of changing to a tiered plan, which is not throttled.
Is it BS, yes, but it is what it is.
I did the math and we are better off staying with ATT right this moment.
Our six lines of service would cost much much more on any other carrier. In my case I could actually switch to the 5 gb plan and use 3gb over and still pay less than at the competing carriers.
How is the amount in the top 5% determened? I got my line way back in the day when smartphones were taboo and not "trendey" and it was known as cingular. I didnt half to pull matrix hack to get teathering. The software was on the disk and the instructions were on the owners manual. Why are long time customers have to be restricted now? I got my unlimited plan because I want and can make use my data. I got trottled only after two to three day in the billing cycle. I stream spurs basketball on nba league pass moble which would jusiffy getting such a plan. Why do I need to pay for wifi when I already paying for the use of unlimited data? Wifi is for the customers that need to ration thier limited data.
My brothers what can we do seriously to damage At&t for BS ing us. Tomorrow the can say anyone using 100 MB is top 5%.

Your crazy if you think the 1% "data hogs" on the Verizon network have anything what so ever to do with shared plans. It's called corporate greed. Period. It's the same reason they let us keep it. If you want and are nice about it they still let you keep unlimited with a upgrade. They would rather keep the customer then lose one over the would be profit gained from share plans.

All I am saying is people using exorbitant amounts of data is the reason these phone companies started to limit the data plans and charge more. The reason cmraymond stated is not the reason that Verizon is trying so hard to push people off of unlimited - this is the reason. You say that you're going to see how much data you can rack up before your bill cycle as if you're intentionally trying to use as much data as possible because you can. This seems to be a common thought among people who hold on to their unlimited data, and it does make cmraymond's hypothesis slightly more possible. You may be mad that Verizon wants to take your unlimited data, but the way to justice is not to abuse it as much as possible. That doesn't teach Verizon a lesson, that makes them want to try as hard as they possibly can to kick you off of it once and for all so that they can do other things with all that bandwidth. I'm not saying that it's right that Verizon wants to move everyone away from unlimited, but when I see posts like this, I understand their reasoning. It's precisely why I didn't care about switching to shared - I don't need to use unnecessary amounts of data just because I can, and often I don't. I like streaming HD video, but I don't need to be doing so 24/7 through mobile data. I like being able to stream music, but I found that it's just as simple to download the songs I listen to onto an SD card (I have about 120 or so songs on it, so it's not an incredibly large choice, but it barely uses any space so I'm sure people could download much more if they needed), so I don't need to stream every time I want to listen to music. Verizon expects people to be able to do the same things I've done, because it's reasonable. Using their network is a privilege, and unlimited data is not a right. They may have originally done away with unlimited data to get more money, but now I can understand the argument that they just genuinely want people to stop using so much data simply because they can use data.
I have unlimited data but I only use about 2 gb a month. I'm usually on wifi which is a lot faster.

That's all I am saying. I see post after post of people who tethered because they don't have Internet. More likely reason is they don't want to pay for Internet and just use their phones data. Hello, I pay $40 for wireless Internet plus $ 100 bucks for cell phone with data. The people who do this run data sky high too. I just say own up to what you use and pay for it. I am not going to sugar coat it, and you can't deny that there are thousands of posts of people who tether without paying for it.

I hit over 400GB month before last
Just thought I should share my thoughts regarding my latest warranty exchange....my WiFi was having issues on stock Rom unrooted so I called Verizon and see what they could offer.
Battery pull and network refresh(really? I didn't know WiFi was part of the Verizon network but OK)
Factory reset(I though alright atleast were in the right area....)
Finally she proceeded to order me a replacement while telling me that Verizon doesn't tolerate abuse of the network or altering of devices, I asked why do you believe its altered and where is this abuse of your network? she replies, you use an extreme amount of data that is not likely to be consumed soley on the phone.
I couldn't stop laughing, I HONESTLY asked her if she got that from an episode of CSI? I then told her my unlimited plan doesn't include a clause for intruding questions about assumptions on how I use my phone. She quickly backed off and gave me a tracking number for the shipping.
I just was truly caught off guard after the years of having my plan and NEVER being questioned like this LOL....just my interaction and wanted to pass it along
Out of curiosity how much data was it? If you'd happen to know ?

When I called Verizon the week of the DNA launch, I asked the local store if they would have any devices in on that day. The rep asked me if I was upgrading my line and if I was he tried to sell me the SG3. I told him I was not upgrading, I didn't want that pos, and am planning to buy the DNA at retail price. His statement I clearly remember "Why on earth would you pay $600 for THAT phone when clearly you are eligible and able to get a better phone for $99" ... I said nicely that I would like to keep my unlimited data plan. Then he asked me, how much data do I use on a monthly basis ... I replied, usually 30-40GB+ depending. He said "depending?!! that much data should not be allowed, how can one person abuse Verizon..." I just interrupted him loudly saying ...I have UNLIMITED, UNLIMITED means there is no LIMIT! and hung up.
Since then, I blow my data out the water. Hit over 100GB last month myself and plan to do it continually

I just think it's funny that people try to say the unlimited plans were taken away "because of people like you". The reality is that Verizon got rid of unlimited plans because they want to make more money. It has very little to do with the few people here and there who "abuse" their unlimited data.
I personally have unlimited and use as little as 2GB or as much as 10GB on any given month...

Netflix, Downloading ROMs, DropBox (Auto-Upload:I take a lot of pictures and videos) YouTube, Google Music (have no problem streaming 2GB a day worth of music)
So I'm not really "abusing" I'm just taking advantage of my unlimited data, especially since the DNA only has a set amount of storage.
Now me downloading the Windows 7/SP1 ISO files from Microsoft every day would be "abusing" yet still legit
and it is all about Verizon wanting more money... They charging you for data usage and selling you phones without sdcards, forcing you to use their data to use your cloud storage
I think Verizon is "abusing" us!

I agree, Work got me on trips all the time. When at hotels, WiFi costs extra. My phone is the alternative... That uses majority me data there.
I went the route of adding an extra line to get my DNA, came out cheaper that retail!
$199 - for phone with contract
$240 - $10/month for the extra line (2yrs)
$30 - they activate data on the line, switch your two phones then cut the data off the secondary line
I got my DNA for a little over $480 with a pack of 5 free screen protectors lol
My experience with Verizon's customer service has been horrible. If Sprint had the coverage of Verizon, I would still be with them. They finally made things right with me when I was able to do an early upgrade to get my Droid DNA. I was ready to jump back to Sprint lol

Well this month it was roughly 132gb as I recall, I've gotten as high as 200gb before. Bottom line is I pay for unlimited and have had this plan going on six years so lets see 12x6=72x30=2160. That's 2,160 reasons why I don't need to explain myself about how or why I use my phone

I hope you all know eventually they are going to remove the unlimited data plan from everyone. Even when I had unlimited my 3g speeds were so slow on my old phone I never used it, I never even hit 1gb and I still haven't. The most I have ever used was 500mb. But I guess you guys can do as you please since you have unlimited. They can't stop you until they take it away...

Sad thing is I watched a sales rep convice a friend to switch and she got an iPad thinking there's no way I can use all that data they are offering.....sadly she called me the next day saying Verizon ****ed me now......now she's right around same price monthly and is limited

^ interesting. I'm new to Verizon and the phone so I have a limited plan but a co worker of mine long time Verizon person has the unlimited plan he says they tried with him also to change the plan he refused. That's some pretty high usuage you use hehe. I can def see how it can be pretty high I don't use my carrier internet to much but just from streaming music and uploading pictures alone gets me a lot of usage.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing to use that much data? The highest I've gone was like 10 gigs. I don't think I could go any higher if I tried.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm about to get my Droid RAZR replaced to a DNA through warranty and the rep told me I had to pay for the battery and battery cover... I was under the impression that the battery was non-removable. I even have another thread asking this very question and the answer I got was that it was not removable.

Would you be kind enough to explain to someone (a noob) who isn't knowledgeable enough as to understand how a user could use 200 gb a month?
Could someone use 2000gb......8000gb....or a lot more then that a month?
Please tell me how that would be possible even given exaggerated use. I am new to this, and really don't know.
Thanks,

Just about to pre-order a One, and I'm stuck on trying to understand what 'data unlimited' means as compared to the 3GB plan. I did get grandfathered to an unlimited plan when I transitioned to my Inspire, but in the past 2 years there hasn't been a single month where I exceeded 2GB. Wondering if y'all have any advice.
Keep your grandfathered unlimited data, NO reason not to.
I'm on Premier, but when I tried to order mine, the website wouldn't give me the correct price for the phone if I kept my current voice and data plan.
I went into a store, and during the process they told me the system said unlimited plans were not allowed with this device. They called to make sure I am able to keep the unlimited data. Whoever they called annotated my account saying I could keep it, but it has to be reapplied after I get the phone (as was the case the last couple of times I upgraded).

Unlimited gets throttled at 3gb... If u avg 2.5 check out the mobile share plans no throttling and they go upto 50gb... if u wanna keep unlimited don't order online cuz they'll swap ur data pkg

Not sure exactly what you're saying here.
If I don't get throttled until after 3G, then what's to worry about? How much 'throttling' is there? How does one tell if the plan has been changed?

If I recall, LTE unlimited data plan cap is 5GB.
yep. If your on att, always keep your unlimited. Only way to lose it is if they accidentally upgrade your data plan to 3gb or whatever data, or move you to the mobile share plan.

You should be able to keep your data plan regardless of how you order, but as someone else mentioned, the "unlimited" data plan is only unlimited until you are throttled at the 3 gig mark (I do believe its 5 gig for LTE users), at which point you drop to 2G speeds (and let me tell you, 2G is not fun) for the remainder of your billing period. If the Premiere site isn't letting you keep the plan, then you should be able to call and place the same order over the phone with a rep, and the rep should be able to retain your data plan. Otherwise, if you remove the data plan, even accidentally, you cannot get it back, so be very careful about what you click.
AT&T changed the specifics of the "unlimited" plan a while ago without changing the actual name of the plan, to keep people happy. So the "unlimited" and "3GB" data plans are essentially similar now.
Im with O2 Uk
We have two phones through my wife's contract.
On my SGS II I had unlimited data. I never realized just how much I used it until a O2 rep called to "let us know" I had used about 6 gig of data that month. Wanted to know what it was on and that all was ok, LOL
Funnily 4 months before my upgrade they called again to say they will not be continuing the Unlimited option as they deemed 1-2 gig to be enough.
And trust me, you don't miss it till its gone! Im now watching every darn kb pass in fear of it running out, for me 1-2-3 GB is nothing.
The frustrating thing is, they wont offer me a plan with more than 2 gb a month??...
So Im now having to look in to getting a external Bluetooth sim thing (tbh, cant remember what they're called, which isn't helping me find the one im after.. )
I'm now jealous of a friend that has kept his unlimited plan for the past 5 or so years.... (was a special offer, bet they didn't see him keeping it this long lol) He's even forfeited his phone upgrades to keep the contract, smart guy.
My advice, Never give up your unlimited mobile internet.
Oh, and just before all you haters start hating, I don't tether and I don't torrent on my plan  , I do alot of streaming :good:

You clearly know nothing of the people in the US that run 90-150 gigs per month off of their unlimited LTE data plans.
I used to have unlimited when I had a BlackBerry years ago but when I switched to the Samsung Captivate I had to change the data plan and I lost it. I've had 2 a month ever since and I always have to monitor my data with 3g watchdog. Thinking about changing it to 3 GB when I pre-order the HTC one since it's only $5 more a month.

Didn't want to take a chance of loosing my grandfathered unlimited data plan so I went to a corporate store yesterday and placed the order there for upgrade of phone only. They also included the media link which was out of stock yesterday afternoon but was restocked later in the evening online.
Keep the unlimited. I use up a lot of data on Plex app and DirecTV alone.

Ok, so just to be sure I'm on the same page, when I upgraded, I selected the box which said this, and my current (post-upgrade) services show:
Data Unlimited SmartPhone Personal
Data Plan for SmartPhones. Unlimited domestic data usage. Only available for upgrades. Requires customers to be on a "Gold List" Data Unlimited SmartPhone Plan prior to upgrade to 4G device.
I presme that's the right one, yes?
I am in the same position. I have the unlimited plan and I'm thinking about getting the HTC One.
I will not give up my plan because I regularly go over 3gb. I received the text message threatening to throttle my speed after 3gb but never really noticed the difference after 3gb.
I remember when I was upgrading to the iphone 4 back in 2010 I had the choice of keeping unlimited data or drop to 2GB and save $5 a month. At the time I was not even close to 2gb so I dropped down to save some $$.
Fast forward to 2013.
I do about 6GB a month. Without even trying. LTE was a game changer.
I regret giving up my unlimited data.. They even raised the throttling to 5GB.
I ordered online but before doing so I talked to representatives. They told me if I ordered it but called them before activation they can make sure that you don't lose the unlimited data. I have backup in the form of a chat online with their representative just in case they try to not honor their word.

Looks right to me.
At&T throttle?
ATT has threatened to throttle my unlimited every month for the past year or two. I always get the same two messages and it never happens. At least not that I can tell. I'm sure they do throttle, but it's never actually happened to me. I run speedtest pretty regularly and Netflix never has any trouble.
Never let them take away your unlimited data. They will have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

I don't really feel sorry for those who use 100+ GB/month. Those are the users that prompted the removal of the unlimited plans to start with. You can scream "unlimited is unlimited" if you want but its Verizon's sandbox and they make the rules.

Agreed...there comes a point (about 100 GB a month) where it becomes an "unjust enrichment" for the end user....and this is why we cannot have nice things lol
I'm surprised Verizon didn't go the route of...well the unlimited data plan started in the days of 2G/3G only...so that's the only unlimited data you get...when you are on 2G/3G.
Maybe I shouldn't give them any ideas... :/
agreed. I live out in the boonies, I am on 1x and sometimes 3g. my internet is only dsl at 2.5Mbps (3g speeds) ... so whenever I hit 4g on my phone, I do everything with it. so i sometimes rack up 70gb+ a month. especially when im at work ..teamviewer, netflix, streaming cameras setup at various locations, music is always going, showbox, kodi (tends to use a lot more data than other streaming apps)... the data rack up quick.
Has anyone actually reported receiving a letter yet ?
I use it as primary internet. Been paying for it for so long. Screw paying $60+ a month for cable that is the same speed but doesn't offer the same capabilities that cellular data does. I rack up over 100gb a month but it's a business account so i doubt they will cut me off.
The fcc does nothing about the internet monopoly in my area because it's not considered a monopoly because wireless internet is considered an option. When verizon charges what they do for internet it clearly isn't an option. We all know verizon can afford to give you more GB's at a lower price.
Most of the infrastructure is already in place and they are paying purely for maintenance at this point. And when they are talking about faster speeds with xlte and lte-a they are expecting you to use more data but have no plans on reducing the cost per gb. Faster speeds means a larger resource pool to tap into. The excuse that heavy udp users are decreasing the speeds for others is basically a thing of the past at this point.
Honestly it's all bs marketing and political manipulation. Tell me why countries in the EU can offer unlimited lte data for 35 euoros a month, which people use as their primary internet source, if this isn't the case?

They will regret it, T-Mobiles service, at least here is so spotty its not even worth paying for. When my wife had it she had to use my wifi tethering just to use her phone half the time we went anywhere.
200gb a month is plenty, but the problem is the price of the new plans they want you on. Id never pay those rediculous prices.
But unlimited should be unlimited, i understand that too, but 500gb people... Come on now, that is a little excessive. I don't even come close to that downloading movies all day on my home cable network. So i can see where verizon is coming from. Fair usage.
I am sticking with my Verizon UDP for now, but i have also bought my wife a new phone on at&t's DirecTV unlimited plan that's up to 4 devices just incase verizon pulls out more bs. Figured id jump on that and get grandfathered on that also, since in my area at&t is second best if not identical to Verizon's coverage.
Sprint and T-Mobile are out if the question for me, been there done that.

I agree with you on that one, 200GB/month is a bit excessive and almost abusive to the network load. But for those of us that use 12GB and end up getting our plans yanked from us is insulting. I know I purposefully sought out wifi wherever I could to keep unnecessary use of network resources to a minimum. This is the thanks I was given for my consideration.
To say I feel insulted is putting it lightly.

Oh I feel insulted for you as well. 12GB is not that bad at all. I average 45gb and have not received a letter yet. This whole ordeal is ridiculous. I would rather they implement a cap on the unlimited, like say 100GB or even 40GB and then slow us way down instead of just straight up removing us.
