[Q] Flashing a kernel/rom help - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
So I got my I9100 about 2 months ago and when I got it I followed Intratech's guide to root it (big thanks) and it's been running fine with the listed kernel as 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555. However, now that I've been using the phone for a while I want to flash a ROM (CM7 and then CM9 when a bug free version is out) I also would like to use a custom bootscreen. I've been reading around and at the moment I'm using CWM Manager 2.0 which from what I can tell is pretty out of date. Is it just a simple case of downloading the kernel from here, flashing it using odin then using Rom Manager to flash a ROM? If so then how do I go about using a custom boot animation?
Sorry for these newbie questions but I've been reading around and am not really sure what to do in my situation. Thanks in advance!

[Q] Got my Samsung Galaxy S2, now what?

Hi there,
Today I received my Samsung Galaxy S2 and now I'm trying to find some information about custom roms for my phone. After searching through all sticky's here I cannot find any info about where to start with custom roms.
My previous phone was a HTC HD2. I've installed android onto my phone using MAGLDR and Clockworkmod, which worked great. The thing I liked the most was that in case I screwed up a installation I could alway flash the original Windows Mobile ROM back, making my phone almost stock again(still will have to remove HSPL then).
I also helped a friend install custom roms on his HTC Desire HD, but the thing I notest on that phone was that you could never go back to the original android installation. I hope this is different with my new phone.
So these are my questions:
- Where can I find some information about flashing a new ROM to my phone?
- And is there a way to revert back to the original ROM after using a custom ROM?

First root your device.
Then:
Flash a rom which you can find in the Development section. Every big rom has their installation procedure explained. (VillainRom, Cognition.. dunno)
----
You can just flash back the original stock rom, but there's a hidden counter that counts how many times you flashed new software. You need a little tool called a 'usb-jig' to completely undo the number the counter is on. This way you'll retain your warranty.

Nope, with Odin. You can find the Programm and the rom together with instructions on www samfirmware com
Thanks everyone, I'm downloading the original rom now, then will try my first custom rom for the SGS2 (VillainROM 3.0.0)

[Q] I don't have ANY feature of VILLAINROM 3.0

Hi all,
I flashed the ROM yesterday and I can't see any of the ROM features.
I mean, I can see on phone info Villainrom 3.0, Android version 2.3.5 and ninphetamine 2.0.5, but there is no difference at all between stock Samsung ROM and the ROM I flashed.
I downloaded it twice and I flashed through recovery and I made the wipe required after the flash. Any idea of what is happening?

Have you checked the rom's thread, specifically the VRTweaks post?
Regardless, you're likely to have more luck asking your question in the existing thread.
Also pls notice a custom rom not always at first impact looks different to stock
Usually custom TW based roms (stock based) got "hidden" tweaks more than "visual" tweaks.
Check under Phone Info (settings) if the flashed rom is running or not
Without reading VR instructions .You have to be doing something wrong following the instructions.

[Q] Troubles with Rooting and Unrooting

Hello Everyone,
I am not new to android as I have had multiple android devices, however I purchased a SGS II from a friend and he rooted it. However, he does not remember what software he used to root it. So I used the one click method and it said it unrooted it no problem, however superuser and CWM is still installed and JD plus says it has root access. The kernel is XXKG3 and I installed and used it no problem. However, again when I go to CWM under current kernel: unknown. I tried everything I can think of, searched these forums the best I can and I still need help. Can anyone help me? If so, greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all your time
Have you tried flashing another kernel like siyah?
How will using that kernel help? Just out of curosity, I dont know too much
You have not searched properly. All you had to do was use the search button use a few keywords and boom you have the results. But anyway here i go.
To root go into Chainfires thread that is in the original development and look for cf-root kernels. Flash that through odin and it gives you root and cwm recovery and manager. Once you have done that it basically roots your phone. Now if you want to unroot all you have to do is flash official firmware from Intratechs thread again in original development section and your phone will be unrooted..Guides on how to do that are in both threads and at the first page. Now this is were you come in
Read read read...read the information given in those threads and you should understand more and you should be fine. good luck
I did do my research, I must have missed them. I will be trying this tomorrow, thank you!!!
Just flash a stock rom and then flash cf-root kernel mate..

[Q] New to GSII - Differences of rom version and fast how-to!

Hi everyone! I've had for an year an amazing Nexus S (aw.. so google..) and now I'm a very happy owner of a GSII (so freakin' fast!). I thouhgt to keep the telephone with the original rom waiting for ICS but... when I saw the so HEAVY personalization by samsung! Sigh... it's so Gingerbread! it even seems ICS!
Now the question.. I've seen so many acronyms near the roms. What they stand for? I mean like XXLPQ, LPQ, LPE, XXLPH or stuff like that.
And what if I would put on a rom that is PURE GOOGLE? I saw the WanamLite, is it stable/fast/daily-use? Do you suggest this or other roms?
How to install cooked roms? With the NS you have to unlock the bootloader, install the cwm and you're done. Do you have to unlock the bl with the GSII? Can I install the cwm with rom manager and then I'm done?
THANKS A LOT!

That is the firmware version and/or region. Latest is ICS XXLPQ.
I suggest you Checkrom v6 (soon ICS!) is the most stable popular and stable rom around.
Thanks, but how? xD
As I said I don't have idea. Any bootloader to unlock? Just download rom manager and install the cwm?
Start with the faqs guides and other stuff all sticked at the top of the page .

galaxy phones can be tricky if you came from a nexus. Basically you have to read the FAQs, but in terms of flashing stuff the biggest difference is that the recovery and kernel are linked. You can't flash a separate recovery, and that's why you can't use clockworkmod.
There is no bootloader unlock thingy also. But you'll need Odin instead.
Keeps these points on mind and then read the FAQs again. And good luck!

Check out galaxys2root.com. It has detailed video tutorials on everything you need.
I bought my GS2 only 5 days ago and already went through installing Resurection remix 9.4, 9.6 and 9.7 and loving it
I've just installed the Omega V5.0 ICS ROM and its awesome, and is based off the XXLPQ firmware
Method,
I started from a 2.3.5 firmware, rooted it using a cf-root-sgs2_xx_oxa_ki3-v4.1-cwm4.zip and odin.
I copied the Omega zip rom to my sd card, rebooted into clock work recovery (the chainfire kernel installed clockwork automatically)
Followed the instructions for doing the thee wipes on the Omega home page.
and did the install from the sd card.
Hope that helps some...
Obivously every custom rom has its own instructions.

[Q] stock Kernel

Hello there
I recently rooted my s5830i and installed a custom ROM.
All good but i was not satisfied with the rom and decided to restore to stock using the CWN backup.
My problem is that i still have the custom Kernel from Rafael Baugis installed and I want to restore stock Kernel
I searched the forums and can`t find a full tutorial on how to do this only bits and pieces that are not very useful.
If someone can tell me the exact steps on how to restore stock kernel it would be good.
Thanks in advance !
You need to flash to stock thru odin.
There are a lot of tutorials out there on XDA - use the search (start using it now will help you later, if you'll get more problems )
As I said I searched the forums but didn`t find a complete tutorial on how to restore stock Kernel....
Then you didnt searched good enough...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840645
it's even a sticky thread on the android section..
thank you :good:
Wait, what do you want the stock kernel back? It have a major problem? Because I want to install that custom kernel on the stock Rom without messing up and actually can't make it boot; so what custom Rom you installed before?
