Galaxy note rom for galaxy s 2? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, happy new year!I was wondering, since the note and gs2 are practically the same phone, how hard would it be to develop a note rom for the gs2?I for one would find it super cool to have full functionality of the capacitive pen in my gs2 plus all the applications created for the note. And since samsung arent going to bother(makes sense, few would buy the most expensive note if they did) it would be amazing if any developers would think about it(especially an ics rom when it comes out)!Cheers!

The note has a wacom digitizer which is needed for the fancy pen stuff, software can't add hardware.

Yup. No Wacom pen interface hardware on the GS2.

I see.Bummer.So a common capacitive pen wouldnt still work with most of the fancy note apps?In some percentage at least?Or it would be totally unbearable?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

Samsung Note's S-Pen is a big factor in being able to write and draw on the device. Normal stylus simply wouldn't work.

Ahhh guys.... the op said he wants to use a capacitive pen not a wacom pen.
It'd work fine, only limitations we would have on the gsg2 is the wacom pen pressure feature and side button feature.

Maxstylus mxts100 possible with 7.7?

So it seems that this stylus, http://www.atmel.com/microsite/stylus/default.aspx, might be compatible with our tabs, this is based on the fact that the 7.7 includes the touchscreen controllers based on Atmel's maXTouch® E Series. There is a video that shows it working with what looks like a Verizon 10.1 tab. The only thing is that it supposed to only be compatible with Android 4.0. Now my question is, since we are scheduled to have the update soon, will we be able to actually use this stylus? There is no release date of this stylus anywhere, i have contacted their local sales office in the USA and never got a response. Has anyone come across anything related to this new stylus? Any technical people out there have an input if this will actually work? Thanks.

So i sent Amtel a message via their Facebook page:
"Hello, i have a question and i am wondering if you could provide an answer. I own an international Galaxy Tab 7.7 3G+Wifi P6800 from Samsung. I unserstand that the tab includes a maxtouch sensor, not sure which series, and i am wondering if the mxts100 will be compatible with this tab? The tab is scheduled to receive Android 4.0 in the next couple of months and i understand the stylus is compatible with it. Also if you couple please provide a release date and price range. There are many owners that are extremelly interested and hopefull this stylus does work. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon."
Their response:
"Hello, Antonio: Thanks for your interest! We are working with a number of OEMs who are integrating the mxts100 into their designs. These OEMs will announce product information as their products become available in the market."
Very plain if you ask me, not sure what to make of it.

According to this Atmel link (http://ir.atmel.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=610205) the Galaxy Tab 7.7 uses the Atmel maXTouch mXT768E controller (http://www.atmel.com/Microsite/maxtouch_eseries/mxt768e.aspx).
The E-series controllers can accommodate a "2mm thin passive stylus" which brings the new C-Pen from the Galaxy S3 to mind (http://m.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ETC-S10CSEGSTA).

Wondering if the C-Pen could work with the 7.7 now that it has ICS or something else needs to be done (software update?) for it to work, or will a dedicated stylus be release for the tab.

I saw a YouTube video of the C-Pen in use on an S3 and truthfully it was pretty disappointing -- no better than my Jot Pro that I use with an iPad2, which is pretty much an exercise in frustration for "natural" note taking.

I actually just called atmel regional sales office in the US, the maxstylus is in beta testing and they are working on supporting our tablets!!! No release date of course, original release was slated for 2012Q1, which has obviously come and gone.... but beta testing means sooner than later! ....unless you're vlc.

I have an Adonit Jot Pro which I am currently using with my 7.7. While the stylus is quite effective, it is unfortunate that most of the note taking apps for android have not implemented the palm rejection. It may not be a problem in smaller devices, but it's kinda hard to jot on a 7.7 without resting on the screen.
So is there any note taking app with palm rejection in android akin to noteshelf for the iPad?
try Jotter... it has great palm rejection, I use it all the time on my note...
Heeler
Jotter is for the galaxy note only. It doesn't support palm rejection in other tablets without s-pen.

Yeah, the flat piece seems like it could interfere with mark making. I draw pretty fast, so I need to know that when contact is made, a mark is being made. It looks like you'd have to be really careful and deliberate with the Adonit stylus.--that and it doesn't have android support strangely enough.

Anyone Seen The "Note 2" Vid?

Hi,
Just saw this vid about the Galaxy Note 2 and its S Pen features. >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTMfkG8a-2g&feature=BFa&list=HL1346344641
My question is... what are the chances that the geniuses here at XDA can replicate some or all of these functions for the S3 if you had an S Pen?
Ideally it would be nice to have extra functions when you hover the pen over the screen, and pressure sensitive handwriting.
Having seen this vid, I'm quite disappointed that the S3 I love so very much, is no longer the Samsung Daddy! :crying:
What do you think? Forget the size difference, just features, is the Note 2 looking more functional than your S3?

Both the screen and the pen react to each other
i will be getting the Note 2 as long as it has LTE WITH its quadcore......if not then they can keep it. i have the international s3 and after coming from the skyrocket and galaxy note LTE version. this s3 just crawls on the network.
so im hoping the quads will get LTE this time around.
Im sure I heard that it would be 4G with the quad core.
(OFF TOPIC)
I'm British with an International S3. I phoned my network/carrier this morning and asked if my S3 would be compatible with 4G when we get it in the UK (By the end of the year apparently). He assured me it would be. Why can't the International S3 get 4G in the US?

The screen is capacitive for your finger and also inductive for the pen. That is how your hand doesn't draw lines on the screen while you are writing as the capacitive part gets turned off while the pen is being used. At least that's how it works on my Note 10.1 and I'm assuming the Note 2 is the same
I believe it's the pen that senses the pressure and tells the pone.
Here's hoping all the cool stuff from the N2 turns up in the JB release for the N10.1!!!

I think he lied! I'm sure I read somewhere on here that the quad core processor in our S3 cannot receive LTE and that's why the US version uses a dual core instead
EDIT: It is the radio chip in our S3 that is incompatible with LTE source http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2012/05/25/the-sexier-samsung-galaxy-s3-you-can-never-buy-in-the-uk/
Looks sweet I would definitely get it if it had a higher res screen, don't think I could take a reduction in pixel density from my s3 but still looks great. Love the quad core and 2gb ram

cant be just the pen who's pressure sensitive.
If it's really only the pen, u could actually reengineer the pen to work capacitive, which would give any other user the same experience as the Note..
Either way.. Im wondering what JB-Features they add for the S3.. as we've seen there are quite some near features for the NoteII.. nothing u couldn't do with the S3 I believe

I did say to him - I thought the (international) S3 didn't have a 4G compatible radio. He then asked if I had received a new sim with the phone. I said a micro sim. And he said then it would be no problem. He said something about how he works for a specialist department and he could ping my phone and get certain info back from it about its capability.
I'm wondering (which I now realise I should've asked) will the British 4G network infrastructure be different to the US? Meaning we wouldn't need the same phone hardware as US 4G users to receive the same speeds.
In fact, I might just call them back tomorrow.

I just read that the UK 4G signal will be at 1800mhz which is different to US. Don't know what that means or what the implications are. But I'd love it if that meant I don't have to get a new phone when 4G becomes available in the UK!

actually many of the features can be implemented without S Pen.
It will be bad if samsung don't give us that super cool gallery, best faces, video seeking preview,etc...
Yeah, I see how some of those features, like the gallery could be made available on the S3. I don't see how hovering or pressure sensitive additions could be made.

the note 2 is good
but not alot better than s3
so i think i will stick with my s3
despite being painful, i think i'll keep my S3 until the S4.. i think i read spring 2013? i'm really curious already about it :fingers-crossed:
i think i would have definitely upgraded to the note if it had quad cpu and higher resolution. quad core isn't enough to warrant because i don't see many apps making use. probably a battery killer too.
Wow! We're talking S4 already!!
The initial envy I had for the Note 2 is starting to fade. As I have the international S3, I think the hardware's pretty much the same, just bigger screen and overclocked. And all the software differences could be addressed with a few updates. Jelly Bean being the main one.

I worried that samsung might not provide those features update to us(international s3 users). they might want to keep them exclusive to note only.
Seem like samsung spent more time innovating on Note series than on S series
But I see all S3 features are available on Note2

What is stopping you from upgrading to a Note 2?

I'm tempted really, by the speed and stuff and the extra ram. But the size irks me a little and the fact that the only plus goodness is just a pen which writes on the screen, it doesnt help that it costs around 600euros here in my country, which is 800 SGD.
Hi,
I haven't upgrade my international Galaxy S3, because I hate big screen like that. I prefer one phone and one tablet (10inches).
I don't think they have an huge difference between Galaxy S3 and GNote 2 speed. At last, pen exists for galaxy S3or other capacitive digitizer.

I don't know if I had to set something up beforehand, but I tried my friend's Note II S-Pen on my S3 and it didn't work. Not going to lie, I'd've liked a Note 2 but I didn't know if it would've fit my hand (I found out today that it does - mostly). If my next phone is a Samsung one (hopefully so) then it will be the Note 3.

No, S-pen doesn't work. But C-pen (made by Samsung) is design to work with Galaxy S3.

If we're to believe Samsung Display, the display arm of Samsung, which is actually a desperate company, there might not be a Note 3 as we know it. They're replacing both the Note 2 display, as well as the S3 display with a 1920x1080 4.99 inch panel this year. This according to Anandtech. I suppose we could see a curved OLED touting Note, but then again, flexible OLED yield isn't supposed to be good enough for production runs til 2014.
Unless they're keeping the display a secret, this is what most would expect. This doesn't mean that they'll have some other type of offering or combination to allow SPen functionality on say....the S4, but I wouldn't personally design a new chassis around an S4 and call it a Note.
I'd definitely choose the S3 at this point. The Development support will last significantly longer than it will for this device. Isn't it the most popular Android device ever? That is to say, more users often means more ROMs, the pressure to update and develop for it will be higher.
Since were not talking about an upgrade, its a no brainer.
But if you had to use an upgrade, or pay more than say....50-100 bucks (personal figure) I definitely wouldn't do it. A new generation of SoCs is just around the corner. Just as well, the GPU is much more powerful on the S3, but app support and UI/general performance isn't too much better now that we have 4.2 AOSP. And while an official JB is probably a couple months out, but it will bring most Note2 features home for us.
That's the current sitrep for both devices.

Personally I love my note and it's plenty fast with the stable roms out there. My gf has a S3 and it's a nice device and I can really see the appeal but it really depends on WHAT you plan on doing with it. I remote into computers and my home network. Work on servers all from my phone so moving to a smaller screen isn't what I'd do. It has the horsepower to show up plenty of phones and though it's a gen old with older hardware, I kept my 86 toyota camry longer than I've had this phone and THAT was a piece of crap.
But again it's all about needs and wants. If you feel that you need the faster phone and are willing to loose the screen size, I say go for it.

Agreed, with new phone announcements coming up soon it doesn't make sense to upgrade for any form of currency, but in a straight trade, it might be worth it.

actually the note 2 non international is fast enough, after you apply the Lag-remover app, posted this month. The Note flies after!

the fluidity of the s3 blows the note out of the water...
so so smooth.

Galaxy Mega 6.3 or 5.8 officially Announced

Samsung just announced Galaxy Mega, either a 5.8 inch screen or a 6.3 if you dont believe check Engadget.com

So it won't be part of the note family?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Lol. They might as well just produce the note from 5-7" at 0.5" increments.

I don't think the Mega has an S-pen though. Maybe that will bring the cost down to open up for more consumers.

They have big screens, but internals similar to our Notes. Neither of these would be an upgrade.
They get a big MEH from me...

I was really excited till i read the specs They have always made Note similiar in specs to the "S" series. So I was thinking at least same hardware and camera. Looks like I just might buy a Note 2 till something better pops up.... Dual core and 8 megapixel camera? 1.5 gb memory will not have me anticipating its release.
If it doesn't have a s pen I rather just upgrade to note 2

From what I understand the bigger mega has the s pen .. These new releases still have better specs just not as good as what may be on the way

these are budget phablets imo.. I'm sure there will be a note 3 that will blow them out of the water.

I agree.

The 6.3 is actually VERY interesting.
1) It will be most likely bigger than Note 3 screen size and is lower resolution.
2) 720P is more than enough for me and with 3200 battery and dual core processor means amazing battery life
3) It is PLS LCD, and hands on review is very positive. I personally always preferred LCD's color accuracy over pentile AMOLED's bluish whites
4) Unconfirmed: It is supposed to be Exynos A15, same processor in N10, which is flat out amazing
I have no use for the S-Pen, if this is $200 cheaper than Note 2 and is available on AT&T it is a winner.
Too bad I doubt we will have this for AT&T so will most likely have to do Note 3 . . .
Doesn't AT&T have similar frequencies to the rest of the world?
I'm interested in the 6.3, to use on a TMobile phone plan OR an AT&T tablet plan (might not be recognized as a phone). I love my 7.0+ but these would pocket carry a little easier. I'd consider selling that and my i717 and getting the 6.3 to go with my S2 (still love that thing!).
The 5.8 does look a little bleh but the 6.3 might be what I always wanted- a compact cellular tablet. They both look a lot better than that Galaxy Grand/Samsung Galaxy Player with a radio thing.
Better to wait and see what specs the note 3 has to offer. I think witch ever mega sells the best will be size of note 3 Testing the waters.

I don't get that theory though, not many people are going to want a phone with a qhd display in this day and age.
Just speaking in terms of size. I'm sure total specs of the famous (or infamous) note line will be much better

Since the note first launched its outspecced the flagship galaxy phone of its generation. I'm really hoping the US note 3 gets the new exynos and a non pen tile screen.

I've read in a few articles that note 3 might come with the octa core if can iron out the LTE.

Im compairing the Mega 6.3 with the Hauwei Ascend Mate 6.1, on specs the Ascend wins hands down, but still not sure as 3rd party roms might not be developed for the Ascend, a 4050mah battery is awesome too and its waterproof, quad core and 2gb of ram!!!, this is a difficult choice at least i've got 4 weeks to decide.
The Mate also looks to be pentaband.
