I'm making a program where it will send a text message to a select group of people at a push of a button for fire departments. Right now, all of the numbers are hard coded in so if they want to add or remove someone from the list, they have to go through me and I have to send them the program every time.
I want to make it so that a contact list will come up and they can check/uncheck the people they want to send it to. I have searched for hours on end and can not find a clear (or even a rough for that matter) tutorial on how to accomplish this. There are a ton on how to select a single user, but non on how to select multiple people.
Here is what I need:
-Contact list that will select multiple people
-Selection sticks after closing the program, restarting phone, etc.
If anyone is willing to help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it and I might be able to slip you a little cash to go along with it.
Thanks
Bump. Anyone?
So what are you doing so far? Are you reading anything from the actual phone's contacts, or just using a hard-coded list? Do you even need actual phone's list, or are you maintaining a separate list independent of the phone's contacts, but modifiable by the user?

Right now, I have a hard coded list in XML format that the program loops to send the SMS out. I would like to use the phone list to be able to select the contacts so I can add/remove people on the fly instead of having to be at my computer.
So far, The farthest I have been able to get on the contact list is using this to populate the list but that is only single selection.
Just a bump in the right direction:
Use a listview with an adapter and choose simple list item multiple choice...

Hi,
Are there many users utilising their Task lists?
So far as I know that is possible with P. tasks you can buy it for 2.39 euro. There is a thread about on xda. I can sync with exchange I tought.
I wish Remember The Milk worked on WM that same as it does on Android. Unfortunately, all it does is sync/mix between Tasks and RTM online. PITA if you ask me. Android version was great. This is sh1t. Am having to use Tasks for everything now - business and personal - but the default app is not particularly good at displaying what order you want to get things done in.

Sorry guys where can I eevn fnd the Tasks list?
I dont need to synch it but it wouldbe good to have a local easily accessible list to add to and tick off when stuff is done
i struggled for weeks, cos theres a bug in where you can't set start and due dates, making tasks useless.
came across "manila tasks" on xda (where else) which makes tasks much more finger friendly, and it the built in task list so syncs when outlook syncs.
eeerrrmmm......so where is it then please?
hmm let me see if i can find it, , hang on (types manila tasks into google) oh there it is, hit number 1!

oh wait, did you mean where it is the default one on the phone? well on a stock rom its called tasks, and is in the start menu, but on a cooked rom the link could be in a sub folder, so you can get to it directly in windows/tasks.exe (it may be hidden, make sure you show all files)
I have the the stock rom.
I have no Tab called Tasks.
I then did a search in Windows and way down at the bottom there is Tasks.
It does not show up when I look at the programs visible by pressing the "windows" buttom.
I have in the interim created a quicklink to it but I would like to be able to see it when I press the windows button - any idea how I do this please?
I am guessing the same way as I managed to see the games but when I long press on it I just get the option to send via bluetooth or copy, not to create shortcut etc.
EVen when I copy it I dont then get to paste it anywhere

choose copy, then scroll right up to the top, go into the folder 'start menu' then click menu - edit - paste shortcut
you might find the tasks link in you start menu (windows key) in a subfolder, tools, maybe, or outlook perhaps. (Im on a non stock, so dont know where it was by default)
I remembered that eventually (paste shorcut then rename it).
Also good call about Outlook - it is indeed there as is "notes" which I also wanted (i created a link to Onenote in the interim).
I thought Outlook was the program not a folder so have never pressed it to date.
Thanks for the heads up
Hy everyone,
I've tried searching the forums for a solution but no luck..
Is there any way to save a number while having a conversation?
if i select the "keypad" during a call, and write down a number, there isn't a "save to contacts" option or anything similar to that..
i've fiddled around a bit and the only thing remotely similar to what i need is only an option to save a note during the call, but that is absolutely ridiculous, why would i want to save a note and then go and retrieve it.. i just want to save a contact while talking...
I take it that the phone number you want to save to contacts is different to the telephone call you are currently connected to.
Why not, while on a call, press the Home button, then select the Contacts tab, then select New Contact. You can then write the number in the new contact, along with other details.
hey fred_up thanks for the reply!
actually i did thought of that right after i posted the question, but i just think it's sad that we need to perfotm so many actions in order to do such a simple task... one i used to do once without even taking the phone away from my ear... (and no - i'm not complaining about my hd2, i love it despite its little flaws).
A very handy bit of software is called AutoLoudspeaker - if you do a search, you'll find it on this site. As soon as you take the phone away from your ear (ie the screen lights up via the proximity sensors) the phone goes automatically into loudspeaker mode. That'll take one step out of the process.
No doubt some clever clogs will develop some registry edit that means a long press of the Windows button will open up a new contact page.
Yeh i'm aware of that option, and i use it sometimes when at home, doing the coocking or dishes when the GF is out or while playing pc games but it doesnt really meet my needs when i need to remember a nuber for just a second after i hang up..

Now THAT WOULD BE GENIOUSLY AWESOME!
or maybe even a little app, that is called "numbers" for that matter, which can be located on the home tab and when opening it you'll get a numpad and a screen, and would be able to save numbers in a big font, only numbers, nothing else, the numbers will stay on the screen untill you decide to delete them.
unlike the notepad which saves the notes in a file you need to open, and which is not so finger friendly when coming to fast numbering..
food for thought
maybe i'll just forward the idea to a new app request

may be you can put in a quicklink for 'calculator' on home screen..
I have one, but for that matter - you cannot save numbers you type in the calc, they just vanish once the app is closed, and also - i don't like using things for a purpose they were not meant for, it feels a little stupid..
use panaromic calculator, pressing the x only minimises the program
I am developing an app that sends a text to a group of people (my fellow firefighters) when we get a call. I have everything working but I have to hard code the phone numbers in.
What I want to do is to be able to hit menu and then 'select contacts' or whatever. In the new screen, I just want a simple contact selection with a checkbox so I can select/deselect people and the rest of the program runs with that list so I don't have to hard code the phone number, export, move apk to my phone, install, etc. every time I have to change something.
I have googled for about 3 days using many various terms and can only find guides to a single contact selection. None of them allow you to select multiple contacts.
Does anyone know a way to make this happen? I am pretty new to java so I don't know much about it.
Eclipse with the android base 2.2 (SDK v. 8)
Any help is appreciated.
Any help please? I am quickly coming up to this part of my project and it's the last thing I need to do.
Hey there, I've had an android phone knocking around for some time but only recently started really using it. The main reason I need it is to organize my self, my work and life.
So with this in mind I went and got Any.do and such apps but as I downloaded opened and discarded them I started to find that they all seem to run into the same grave limitations. I have a room full of lists on bits of paper and what I want is to keep them on my phone. But the apps I try offer the option of creating a list and that's it, about 70% of them I discarded because you cant even change the order of the items in the list which is useless to me as i need to write them in priority.
The next problem is that apps such as Any.do which is the best I've found so far can create folders such as work and play and then one long list of everything i will ever need to do at work. I have many tasks to do at work and those tasks consist of other lists of tasks and so on. For example I need to sort out transport up north for a group of people to do a job so I have a work list with the current jobs on it and on it is this job's name, on another bit of paper iis a list of things i need to do for this Job. One of the things I need to do is sort the van out so under fix the van is another list of things I need to do to fix the van, in that list amongst other things in insurance, so i have another list of things to do to get the insurance.
This is how it all works, breaking big tasks down into smaller and smaller tasks till life is all clear and doable. One folder labeled WORK with all these things listed is useless. Great for doing the shopping or organizing a party but no good for organizing your life unless your life is painfully simple.
Because the method of lists within lists is so old and simple and suited to an app I presumed they'd all be able to do it but I cant seem to find one anywhere and I've been at it for a while but then I can barely turn the thing on. So please anyone who knows where to look or what I'm doing wrong I'd appreciate some guidance.

sorry, but you are searching for an notes app, am i right?
i suggest you to try google keep, easy to use, reorderable, you can set alarms and its in the google enviroment.. so it is synced between devices and browser
.. or ask the nsa for help, if you forgot something
I'm searching using the terms: Organization, to do list, Productivity and things like this to try and find an App to help organize into one orderly document of easily assessable lists of what I have to do.
Google Keep is another one that you can make lists in but the list's can not reference each other so you can list everything you have and need to do and buy and so on but you can not group or nest the lists beyond the first level much like the other apps I've seen. You can list WORK,HOLIDAY,SHOP,PARTY and then within the WORK list you can list NORTHERN JOB, FRANK'S, TAX RETURNS. But then that's it. You cant list anything inside TAX RETURNS. It's to basic to organize anything beyond odd jobs and the shopping.
It is one of the ones that is reorderable as in you can move the order of items in the two lists and synchronizing and alarms and all that is fine but I just really need a simple but effective app that allows me to create lists to organize what I have to do and in what order.
I guess I can do it by using folders inside folders with names on them for jobs but it seems like a hell of a work around. Be easier to just live with all my bits of paper but I'm sure there are apps out there to organize things in a little more depth than things like Google keep, I'm sure just not looking in the right place? Anyone?
Does anyone know of an app that would behave like Pocket, but instead of saving the whole page it would allow you just to save bits of text from pages?
Its for learning purposes mostly. I spend a lot of times on FB groups or similiar places, and in like 90% of cases I need to save just one post in a thread, or just a short bit of text. Saving the whole page is counter productive cause either I forget why exactly I saved it, or I have to spend a lot of times looking for the exact info I wanted.
Pocket works great for what it's intended, and I would need something similar. Right now copy and paste seems to be the best solution, but when I send it to OneNote it adds it to new page, and what's worse it won't let me choose which workbook.
So, I need to be able to save part of text (saving images too would be a plus) and be able to quickly find it (via tags or something else). And of course, the ability to export it all. Can anyone recommend something?
I use Google Keep in exactly the manner you describe.
Take a screenshot, crop the image to only the important stuff. Move the images to a special folder perhaps, using any file manager. That's how I do it
