I have an EVO 3D with HBoot 1.40 that has sms problems. none of the Sprint reps over the phone could figure it out or fix it. I'm going to unroot it and take it into the store for them to try to fix it/replace it. I want to know from other people that have got a replacement from sprint, did they also get one with HBoot 1.50? or are they replacing with phones which would make it difficult/impossible for me to root it once I get it?
edit:
correction. I have Hboot 1.40. not 1.50.

I'm pretty sure you'll get the same 1.5 hboot. There hasn't been any hboots above 1.5 as far as I know.
Maybe if you're lucky you might get 1.4 from a refurb, but I highly doubt it.
Mine has that same hboot…… Does that mean I'm not allowed to root

I'm thinking that maybe I should just live with my 1.40 HBoot with sms problems until there is a full root made for 1.50 HBoot then. hmmmmm.

Try going to a custom ROM based on stock and run a profile update. Also try wiping the data on the messaging app.

the problem is sms between 130-160 characters that I send do not show up on the other persons phone. if I send a 180 character sms for example, the second text (20 character sms) only shows up. I've used all the well known roms. tried different sms clients. tried different keyboards. super wipes. hard resets. but nothing fixes the problem that I've had for months. even over the phone I spent hours and they tried everything and cant figure it out so told me to take it into the sprint store. which means I would have to unroot it and possibly get a phone I cant root in the process which to me means maybe I'll just live with the problem and send small sms.
I know going through the HTC unlock process is not the "preferable" method, but I have a Hboot 1.5, rooted running Scott's Senseless ROM and am still able to flash kernels and such (though I have to initiate the process using adb). If you want to use anything as a test-bed ROM, I would recommend this one as it is AMAZINGLY stable and very fast.
Also, why would you have to un-root the phone? I was told face-to-face by the Sprint sales guys that recommended Scott's Senseless to me that they will not turn anyone away with a rooted device.

I've had this problem when I'm roaming on 1x. After three replacements I narrowed it down. It has something to.do with the time stamp of your SMS. Sometimes it might be 1pm and half a message will come in from 5pm.

I just replaced my evo 4g with the 3d the end of Dec I didn’t check my hboot version but I am pretty sure it was not 1.5 till after I did all 3 of the htc updates. My parents also went the next day in a different town than me one phone needed 3 updates like mine and the other only one. So I am thinking it is still a pretty good possibility you could get 1.4. If you go the rout of replacing the phone. But all 3 phones had horrible 3g speeds till I called and re-provisioned each.

Well actually you can still root with hboot 1.50 you just can not s-off but still install custom roms.
You would have to use htc unlock
Here is some more information about rooting hboot 1.50

So I have gotten a 3d 2 weeks ago as a replacement through asurion for my broken evo 4g and like most people on xda it is only natural to root it and slap on a rom the second you get your hands on it. I checked the hboot and to my hearts content it was 1.4, and easy as cake to root since I was coming from evo 4g. The dilemma is that I have tried several roms and everyone I have loaded would give me random reboots and eventually it would just keep rebooting as soon it loads to the home screen. Realizing maybe if I just loaded it back to stock it would help. The random reboots have cut down but I still get it and it's really frustrating. I have checked the battery and it is not loose, and at this point I don't know what to do. I realize that if I go to the sprint store I have to be able to show them the problem. I am also worried that they will update my hboot to 1.5 and claim that I didn't update system software and just send me on my way. Anyone experiencing the same symptoms as mine? Should I just bring it in to sprint to see if I can get a new one?
Thank you

Without more information it would be hard to diagnose it without playing around with the device. It also sounds like it could be the kernel, or overclock settings causing instability because of the voltage either being too low, too high, or heat related. Do you have a custom kernel? If you are, is the device also being overclocked?
The first thing I would do is stop overclocking if you do have a custom kernel. If that doesn't fix it, change the kernel. Remember, some ROMs install their own kernel and you may not even be aware of that. While our devices run the same hardware design there are two possible differences between our device compared to another's. That would be flaws and differences caused by the manufacturing process, and different revision numbers. So while one device runs kernel A @ frequency B very well, another device may have problems and run kernel X @ Y frequency better.
So that could be the issue, and using those diagnostic steps you could easily determine that is the issue, or not.
Yeah I loaded the RUU on it and turned S-off back on. Just sucks because when it doesn't random reboot or bootloop it works great.

I am currently running everything stock, reverted back with RUU and turned back S-on, and it still does it, although less frequently. Before I reverted back to stock, I did use android revolutionary 1.1.1 and on boot up it would run unstable. I then applied his stock clock zip, and it seemed to allleviate the problem at first but would again random reboot. After decided to try InfectedRom which worked great but after a day it would just reboot and eventually just bootloop. Unlucky with both decided to try MIUI and ran great for a few days and kept it on the stock kernel, but again the issues have returned. I have properly wiped the phone each time before applying any ROMs and followed the directions with everyone of them. Before trying another new ROMs I would also battery pull each time it bootlooped to see if it was just a fluke, but it would always come back. I am interested in to see what revision it is, how would I check that?
Thanks again for all the advice!
Is your battery loose?
I thought I had this problem at first too but I just popped a business card behind the battery and Viola no random reboots

Not a problem at all, that is what the community is all about. Free exchange of information, open source advancement of the platform and technology. Everyone gives a little, and takes a little.
I know there is a dialer code that works to give you that information without the need to install any application, or the need for root access, but after lots of research I was unable to find which one would give that info. However, there is a very useful app that you might want to have anyway. It is called "elixir 2", available on the market for free. Once installed, information > click"processor" > more information > processor: (mine says: ....rev. 2 (v71))
Let us know what yours says [for curiosity sake] please
Quick note, if you replaced the phone through asurion and try to replace it doesn't sprint, don't they refer you back to asurion?

So just an update, I finally decided to bring it in store today with it rooted and s-off. I was just so sick and tired of it randomly rebooting I just walked into the Sprint store. Technician brought it in, updated the hboot 1.5 =*(. I checked bootloader, and of course I see the locked in capital letters, but I am still s-off. Does that mean I can still load TWRP and root it? Or do I have to follow the HTC method to root it? Thanks for all the help guys!
If it still says s-off, i believe you are good! but that sounds odd, because otherwise we should all be able to update are hboot after rooting? If anyone knows about this...but anyway...
It was not the hboot upgrade but the firmware upgrade that you needed. You did not have to take it to sprint to do that, they have the firmware update without hboot flooting around the dev threads. 2.3.4 and above roms require the new firmware or you'll get the problems you had. No that you have the firmware a lot of the more cutting edge roms still get reboots with most advanced kernels, you have to watch your rom kernel combo, or stick with the stock kernel.
As for flashing, if you really are s-off still, then you can flash anything you want just like on the ol 4g Let us know. Lucky bastard, have fun
[edit] Found this a few threads down:
"I did what you did, had 1.40 and flashed the wrong update, got 1.50 LOCKED with S-off. You can still flash ROMs and Kernels with no issues. I just had to reload TWRP recovery. Then I flashed the 1.40 Bootloader and all was well.
You can grab 1.40 and flash from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...eng+bootloader
***To others reading this...do not flash this, unless you are S-OFF with 1.50 hboot***
You do not need to UNLOCK using the htcdev method. Just flash the 1.40 hboot and you will be fine."
So reinstall twrp, flash 1.40, and have 1.40 s-off and flash the good way
Yep just flashed old hboot 1.3 and merrily rooted, so far so good running cleanrom 2.9 and taking sad panda's advice trying to figure out if it's app related. I am suspecting that it is groove ip running in the background. So far just installed cleanrom and added tapatalk and SwiftKey

Well, 1 of 2 things is going on....
1) They modded the ROM incorrectly and it always shows 1X (which I SERIOUSLY doubt)
2) Your location/cell tower sucks. You should get in the car and drive around and see if it changes.

Ive gone to my college where there is perfect reception....stays 1x....or 4g.....but 4g is spotty so i need 3g....school wifi sucks
Do a data profile reset using EPST. This happened to me after messing with PRLs last week.
##3282#
Enter your MSL
Select Edit
Select Data Profile
Hit your capacitive Menu button
Select Restore
Then you will reboot.
When the phone comes back on it will update PRL and data profile. It will also check for firmware upgrades, mine said none available. You can just hit cancel on that part if you're concerned.
I had to do this like 5 times before it finally got out of 1x mode. I was stuck on that for a day and a half. Also, this works best if you're in a good Sprint signal area.

Make sure you back up all your Apps & data with Titanium or the like.
Then go into fastboot>USB and run the RUU. (Rom Update Utility) windows executable. Follow the on screen prompts... It will show the progress on both the windows box and the Evo 3D screen. Takes like ~12 minutes maybe more I can't remember.
I am not sure if you will need to install HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe on the windows box first or if you already have it installed?
Warning: this will take you to fresh out of the box factory defaults.
Unlock, re-install Titanium or whatever and restore all your apps.
When you are finished your radio or (Baseband version) should be: 1.06.00.1216
Hopefully the new radios in this release will help with your issues at college.
Try to toggle airplane mode on then off. But....more likely than not, your in a bad area. Lol

My Rezound is S-off and everything. I RUU'ed back to GB yesterday to test the bluetooth in my car since it doesn't seem to work well in ICS. So, I cleared everything, RUU'ed again back to 3.14.605.5 and now I can't get 4G at all, no matter what ROM or network settings I use. I just tried RUU'ing again to see if for some reason it was a bad flash. Sure enough, it's still not working at all. Meanwhile my gf's Tbolt and my buddy's Razr are on full 4G, so it's definitely a phone issue.
Any ideas?
Did you do a factory reset with a stock recovery?
I actually saw a thread that mentioned doing a factory reset in Hboot, doing that now.
Done, 4G is back. Man this phone is complicated sometimes, mixing HBOOTS and radios equals hell, lol.

Two days ago I rooted and installed cm7.1. Everything was fine at home on WiFi then I go to work and my phone is rendered useless. I work in and area where before being rooted and having a custom Rom installed I would have good 3g service all day every day. Now the phone is bouncing back and fourth between 3g and 1x. With one to two bars on either and usually stuck on 1x. So I switch to mean Rom ics. Rom works exceptionally well but now I'm at work and once again terrible not even usuable signal strength in a place where I've worked for years and never had an issue before. It took me 3 hours to download tapatalk from the play store today just to write this. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong or if there's a fix! If not I'll be reverting to stock.
Sprint evo 3d
Hboot 1.5 s-on
4ext recovery
Mean Rom ics
I tried updating profile and prl with no luck. Which actually I don't even know what that does so it could be irrelevant.
Please help thanks!

Bumer man. If you were s-off I'd say just flash a different radio. However you being s-on makes that not a option. Have you tried calling sprint and have them reset your signal ?
#Root-Hack_Mod*Always\=LTE
Ya, definitely do s-off, prefer Closeone with Unknownforce, worth the time, not sure of other method, never tried. Different Rom, some my data is 200-400, others better signal and 1100-1600 3g. CM7 kind of old, second the recommended previously though my preference is Sense 4, no 4g in Phoenix metro, dam you Sprint...lol.

Okay everyone, I have an HTC EVO V, essentially a repackaged 3D for the Virgin network. Currently I have Harmonia ROM on it specifically made for the V. However, I have a big problem...
Every so often I'll send a text and get an SMS Error: Radio Interface Resource Shortage: Cause Code: 64 Error Class: 2. Also when I call the phone it won't go through. So resetting is one option, but it still comes back eventually. Sometimes I'll I update the Profile and PRL, which will only fix it for a time. It's very intermittent obviously, and someone suggested that it could be while I'm on 4G or WIFI but it wasn't true.
So what worries me is if I don't send a text and it won't go through then I don't know I'm having the problem... I'm thinking it's a radio issue but have found nothing consistent online, so I'm wondering what ya'll may think and or if it is indeed a radio issue, where I could download a reliable one that would stop these issues. Thanks for the help!

If you are S-OFF already it might be a good idea to flash the VM RUU and check to see how things work with the stock ROM and firmware. You won't lose S-OFF and will just have to re-flash a recovery and bootloader later to get back to where you are currently.
I do remember that some people in the MeanROM ICS thread with the "resource shortage" problem had to call Sprint and have them reprovision their phone before it worked properly, but you probably don't want to try that with VM unless you are stock.
