[Q] Change Mobile Network Type - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed something interesting today on the country side.
My galaxy S 2 uses the HSDPA mobile network type and i didn't had a strong signal there and my data connection wasn't working at all.
My cousin has an LG Optimus Black witch uses the EDGE mobile network type and he had full signal and data connection.
Is there any way to switch to EDGE when i don't have full signal ?

Nevermind i found out how This thread can either be closed or deleted

[Q] No data at&t

I can't seem to do data on the phone and It seem's to not even get 2g working.
I am on the pay as you go plan 500mb to start to see if it worked and so far it has not. I have never had a real smartphone before so any help would be good.
You turned on your packet data in the Wireless and Network -> Mobile networks settings?

yes and it does not work.
Did you install custom rom ?
If Yes - that particular rom has wrong APN settings.(search forum for default ATT APN settings enter manually )
If NO - no idea whats your problem.

I just got the phone to day and it runs very well, so no custom rom. It's a 3G sim as well. I took it out of my KRZR and put it in the s2. It may not have the right setting's. I am starting to think the phone itself may have a dead 2/3/4g chip. (I don't know alot about cell's ok.)
You tried the Network operator and waited until Select automatically was available?
Yes and that did not work.
EDIT: HELP would be good.
AT&T data settings have been debated at length in this thread, with several members posting their AT&T APN settings for others to try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983
If settings in one post don't work for you, try another.

Lol this guy hasnt done research for ****. To the OP: when people are trying to help you, don't be a smartass. Also put in wap.cingular in your APN settings and you will have data

I did not mean to seem ungrateful. I have done alot of thinking before hand about geting this phone. I just don't have alot of hand's on with smartphone's and I am more the hands on type ok.
Edit: it was on Wap.cingular when I got it and put the sim in.( so that did not work. thanks for trying.)

No problem. Another one you could try is putting it simply as 'phone' . That doesnt work for me but it may for you

I just ran the speedtest app and 3g poped up, and then died in 30 sec. I am just ?????????????????.
I tryed puting on phone and it did not work. I may try calling AT&t to see if anything can be done. I know it's a risk, but I want data on the phone.)
Edit: I can only seem to get 3g runing the speedtest app and if I trun wifi off, then it won't work. I don't know of anything more I can try, so I will try to get my $ back from them.
The phone is faster than my p4 PC that I had 3 years ago.
I don't know what unlimted data plan would work.
I don't get why the 3g/h+ will come up for 3-5 sec and then just wifi and then I can't use 2/3g/h+ to do anything. I am unsure what the isuse is with my data plan and I may have to do a hotspot from sprint or something.(I would not want to do it this way if I can.)

[Q] Problem: only GSM signal good;only WCDMA no signal

My Galaxy S 3 got a problem. When I choose the network only wcdma, no signal appear; if I choose only GSM, the signal is good; WCDMA/GSM, some seconds no signal and some seconds has. I have updated some firmware, but all is the same. I do not know what happens, and can some body help me?
Looks like your provider has rubbish 3G coverage
Try different simcard on network with good 3G/2G and then see what happens

Mobile network strength problem

Hello!
I have problem.
I have galaxy S2 with stock rom, and the phone comes from UK. I have pretty bad mobile network signal in Latvia. Comparing to some other S2 phone, it had better signal strength.
My guess would be, that some Frequency's are different. I couldnt find which phone builds are meant for which countrys, and couldnt get list of supported Frequencies.
My phone build nr. is "JZ054K.I9100XWLSD".

I meant that you're right, OP needs to flash a different modem.
I've added that he/she needs to flash the same modem as on the S2 with the good reception.
O ok cool. Sign may not be as good if on a different network or maybe it's his network that's slower than his mates network. But yes good advice and open should do that

[Q] Data speed problem

Hello All,
I am hoping that someone can help me out.
I purchased 6 Samsung Galaxy S3 unlocked phones. I put SIM chips in each, all from the same provider and all with the same service plan. 3 of the phones everything is working great including fast Internet. The other 3 phones have extremely slow Internet. I did a bit of research and noticed that the phones that are slow display EDGE in Mobile network type. The phones that are fast display HSDPA:9 . Could this difference be the cause of the data speed problem? Can anything be done to fix it?
My apologizes if this is being posted in the wrong forum.
Thanks

In your way, EDGE means slow, HSDPA fast, HSDPA offers speeds up to 21mbps (if your carrier supports it) and EDGE up to 0.5 mbps or so.
Now, if your 3 other phones don't connect to HSDPA (3G) then it's disabled in settings or signal is low or the chip is messed up.
So by checking if everything is good go to settings, under first tab (connections) go to More networks > Mobile networks and make sure that under network mode WCDMA/GSM is checked, notice that WCDMA is HSDPA.
If still not getting faster speeds try to check if WCDMA only option works, if not, eh, bad chip.

Thanks for the reply.
I activated the WCDMA/GSM. As soon as I did the icon status(?)displayed on the top of the phone turned to a circle with a line through it. About 3 minutes later the status changed to an E with bars next to it. The Status/Mobile network type still says EDGE.
When I try to connect to a site it is slow. Does this mean the device is still getting the 2G signal? Could all 3 phones have a bad chip?
Thanks.
that is true

Do all of the phones have the same baseband? Check in settings, about.
Just to make sure the modem is the same.
I just check 2 of the phones (they are all not with me now)
The baseband of one of the good (fast) ones is: I747UCDMG2
and on one of the slow data phones is: I747MVLUEMK5
What does this mean, that they are not the same?

Both are i747 version which is not international version, maybe Korean or something like that, try using only WCDMA this is constant 3G, and see if it works, if not, flash the latest software from sam mobile via Odin, but watch out you download for i747, not i9300 etc. There are many S3 variants.
I tried using only WCDMA with no success.
Do you have instructions of how to locate and flash the latest software? Also I know the phone is currently unlocked would this change that?
Thanks so much.

If it is unlocked, it shouldn't change that.
And note if changing software doesn't help then the chip might be damaged.
For software, go to www.sammobile.com and register, then go to browse firmware and select android/galaxy s3 bla bla.. until you get to country, there select your country, or go to top and select 'top 10 latest' and choose one that is different from yours.
You can know of it is different by the baseband name letters for etc 'XXUGNG3'.
Then download the software you want (it may take a while) and download Odin v3.09 (just type that in google you'll fond ot) and Samsung USB Drivers (also found on google easily).
Install usb drivers, reboot, open Odin, extract downloaded firmware, go to odin and select AP and then navigate to extracted zip and select you software.
Then put your phone in download mode: hold vol down+power+home and then vol up for continue when you see the picture, connect your phone and flash.
Also, please, about that, read here on xda and see tutorials on youtube, this has been answered multiple time and.i am one of rare users that will thoroughly help in answered questions.
I followed the instructions and flashed the phone. It did not help.
Any other ideas? One of the phones we got was brand new! I can't imagine there is a faulty chip in 3 out of 6 phones?
I am frustrated.

Are they unlocked? Of they are try another carrier, or try somewhere where the signal is at it's best reception.
If these simple methods don't work just get it analyzed in the service center, i doubt it can be software problem because you tried with another rom, also, when you'll try maybe changing carrier or going around town to see if it works, and it doesn't, then it is hardware problem, unfortunately.
Thank for all your help.
Nothing seemed to work.
I did try another carrier and it did not work.
I just can't imagine that 3 out of 6 phones have the same problem and 1 of them is new.
Could it be that the 3/4 G only works in the USA and not in foreign countries?

Network signal guru not working

So I am trying to lock lte band and I am using network signal guru for that.

That is really strange. Every ROM and kernel combo I have used so far has worked well with NSG app. Its the kernel that's the key. Stock kernels shouldn't have any issues.
Have you flashed any 3rd-party kernel?
Edit: NSG app, the free version at least doesn't work with SIM2. So for some reason you had the only SIM in the 2nd slot...
