installing market on chinese version of prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

So I have got myself a tranformer prime from china as it has an earlier release than my home country, but i realized that might not be a smart move... They have stripped the android market and I cannot add gmail account and get it to sync with my device.
Looked around a bit and not sure i have found anything that helps with the situation. can anyone help a bit? thanks

I guess you'll have to wait until the bootloader is unlocked and you can flash an uncrippled rom. I'm not sure if you can install all the google apps only using root access...

Ouch, yeah I would not buy a Chinese version unless you live there. It could have a bunch of spyware and firewall stuff on it too. The Chinese government has a whole suite of tools they use to filter, restrict and track people's behaviors.
Until the bootloader unlock tool is available from ASUS, and assuming it is a complete unlock to allow you to install roms and such, you are stuck. However, this would also void your warranty and just create headaches for you it you ever need to contact ASUS for help.
I would return it and buy one when it is available in a country where it will not be crippled. Just does not seem worth breaching your warranty just to put a default, other region ROM back on it.
You could try calling ASUS and acting confused as to why it doesn't have the market. Maybe they will swap it out for you if you did not realize if would be crippled from the retailer you bought it from.

I thought about flashing rom when its unlocked later too, but say i flashed an official rom e.g. UK, would i be receiving auto updates from UK asus or do i need to reflash everytime there's an update?

Once I realized my place wouldn't be selling prime any soon (there still isn't an offciail date!) I went for Chinese ones... completely oblivious to the fact they have crippled the market lol
In any case I ain't too worried about warranty... since i'm rooting/unlocking bootloader anyway, just that since this is my first tablet its better to be safe. In any case thanks for your suggestion!

Had the same problem! Fixed it, check out thread below (solution by devilfan):

[Q] xperia neo I need urgent help to undersand if it's new PLEASE!!

Hi to all!
I need some help for a urgent problem!!!!!
I bought 2 weeks ago a new xperia neo in a big chain store. I haven't rooted it, flashed,.. I haven't done nothing like this.
In this days I have tried to do the update at the firmware 0.62 but SEUS and Pc Companion says that I have a modified software and I can't update.
So I think they have sold me an used phone.
With the *#*#7378423#*#* code I have seen that it's write:
Rooting status:
Bootloader unlocked: Yes
So, i have understand that the bootloader is unlooked and the phone is surely used, it's right??
How can I demonstrate that the modifying has done before the date I have bought it?
There is a date of the flashing saved or an other way to demonstrate that the phone is used and it was modified before I bought it???
Please help me because I don't know what to do!!
Thanks.

do nothing and thank them they saved you hours of stress
thats great news why complain but if it breaks then your nacked because of warenty void
wasnt the box sealed? does the phone look new? (no scratched, finger prints etc.).
are you sure it says "Bootloader unlocked: Yes"? or is it "Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes"?
if it is the second, it only means the phone was not locked by an operator. mine has the same message and no problems updating with pc companion (went from .42 to .58).
if you want to know if it is rooted, try using an application from market that requires root (droid wall, proxy droid, root explorer etc.)

In the box I haven't seen any seal, but the phone looks new.
Yes, it's "Bootloader unlocked: Yes"
I have tried but I haven't root privileges, maybe they have flashed a stock rom to sell it like new?
Believe me you will get ics

Well I'd not have paid for this phone, it's obviously used. Would you buy milk that some hairy fat guy opened, took a sip of and then sealed the package? Would you buy a phone for full price that some guy used and did who knows what? You'd really pay for used phone as much as for new phone? You'd really cheer for being cheated?
So for OP, you asked a fair question. The answer is, this phone is used and you're being robbed of your money, unless you paid noticeably less than for new Xperia neo. So do what you will, your money, your responsibility.
I would rather contact Sony Ericsson first and then the shop you got the phone from.
the seal would have to be on the box. you cant open the box until you cut the seal. mine was opened in front of me and the seller had some trouble cutting the seal.
i would guess somebody messed with its software (the company that imported it), but not used the phone per se. some smaller companies import locked phones and unlock them then sell as "unlocked" phone (usually at lower price than official retailers). they replace the original SE seal with their own seal.
if you payed less than usual price, i would say mess with the software yourself and make it suit your needs/wishes.
I'd not be so trusting, this phone could have been in use for a week. I've noticed some reseller shop employees having that mentality "I'll just use it for a week, as long as no one notices I am fine."
It could even be a developer phone, which you get for almost free.
How do you make the difference what is what with such a phone? What if sometime later you need to take it for guarantee repairs and Sony tells you "you messed the phone up, now you got to pay for services"
This "shut up and hope you're lucky" is just silly. It's cheating by a company, isn't that awful already?
Breaking a guarantee provided by company is your choice. It's your phone, your money. This guy didn't have a liberty to even make that choice. So...
Yes, I've paid like for a new one, for this I feel cheated.
So I don't know what to do, sure I'll go to talk with the vendor (that is a big chain, and for this I thought I could trust, but evidently I was wrong)
But at the moment I have no proof if they tell me that I flashed it...
For this I'm looking for everything that can proof that the flash was before the sold date.
Anyone know if it's possible explore the files on the phone memory to see the creation date??
Or other things like this?
and thanks to everyone for the help!!
P.S.: I've looked also for the deleted files on SD but unfortunely it seems new (or formatted very well)

Thanks for the great idea!!
I've tried with this but it doesn't shows the internal memory, only shows the SD memory, but I have also tried with "File Expert" and it shows me all the internal memory and there is the date of some files:
- some files are dated 01/jan/1970 "I think the ones of the xperia factory installation"
- some are dated with the date of today
- but there are also some files modified in september / october
now I hope the final question I have to ask you...
Which are the files/directory that you can modifying only flashing/rooting, and not in the normal use??
so they can't say me that they have only opened the phone but is a proof they have modyfied it!!!
If its really a big chain as you say, I doubt they will challenge you on it. People saying "It was like that when I got it" is something I doubt they hear a lot from people who just bought the phone, wanting it exchanged.
People who make warranty claims in such situations, I'm sure they've heard it plenty.
Basically the more time you wait, the more suspicious it will seem. Think about the scenario:
1. Someone buys a new phone.
2. Goes home, discovers its likely been used before.
3. Next days returns it, showing the bootloader was already unlocked.
The alternative explanation for the shop, is that you unlocked it yourself in the first day, and then immediately got cold feet about unlocking the BL and returned it. They are unlikely to push such an unlikely alternate theory.
I know it might not have been just a day, but you see my point: the shorter the time, the less likely you are to be challenged. A reputable shop in this situation will not doubt you (not likely, at the very least).
If they don't accept your story, say you'll to escalate it to a local authority or by contacting SE (e.g. if employees use the phones, the managers will know about this, and would fear it becoming public in an investigation by someone else; if it was unlocked by someone else, they risk exposing less-than-ideal distribution channels).
Also, ignore those who are saying you should be happy with an unlocked BL. The official BL unlock is so simple (which is what it is if SE rejected the device), you would never need someone to do it for you. If you wanted a secondhand preunlocked device, you should pay secondhand price.
Well if it was me I would be happy but where im from this just would not happen "i hope this is the case"anyway but like he said iff you don't return on day one more fool you moral of the story just flash what you want and move on

I hope!
I have talk with the shop and I returned the phone to the Sony reparation center and if they found I haven't modified the phone, the shop said will give me a new phone...
P.S.: I know the Unlock of bootloader is a good thing but maybe the phone was used in wrong ways and damaged in something! I don't know, and sure I haven't the guarantee.
So, if I want isn't too difficult unlock it, but before I have the full guarantee and I'm sure no one has used it.
if I wanted to buy a used phone at least I could save some money!!

Will there ever be a way to "Re-Lock" the bootloader?

I imagine that the obvious answer is also the correct one, meaning this is not going to be an option. In a way, it's just as frustrating as before Asus provided an Unlock tool (which they did, on schedule at least on the schedule they committed to.) For all of the blunders that occurred around and with the Transformer Prime, they have work like hell to overcome a lot of the issues. They haven't been entirely succesfull on all fronts, such as the reboots that keep recurring for some, but not for others with each succesive update, but you cannot fault Asus for failing to try.
I guess why I asked will be a common point of contention for a lot of us. It can be agonizing to see sweet looking ROMs showing up, and wanting to enjoy that on the Prime, but unfortunately the Bootloader Lock/Unlock is not like rooting, S-On and all the rest because just about all of those changes are undo-able.
I know personally that every device I root, I look at the tool or method to see how difficult (or possible even) un-rooting is. As long as I now I can put the device n a returnable state for warranty coverage, I am the bravest ROM Flasher in the world! LOL
Because $500-800 is a lot of money to have tied up in a device, one that has had more that a fair amount of issues, including issues that require RMA, it is just too risky for the average Prime owner to unlock the Bootloader.... MAJOR BUMMER!
A really awesome option would have been, or could be if Asus said: "Unlocked bootloader devices lose warranty, BUT, if you are able to restore the device to factory spec (including re-locking the bootloader, a tool that does not presently exist) we will honor the remaining portion of the warranty"
And yes, I am aware that the serial number is recorded by Asus during the unlock process.
That would be the ultimate option. The chance of it happening?About as likely as a new update arriving that fixes GPS completely and permanently. Oh well. One can dream, right?
Sigh.
Prior to owning the TF201, I owned the TF101 which was flawless for the first 4 months of owning it, and then one day it developed this strange off-white splotchy area on the screen, it was pretty big too... way more noticeable than a dead pixel. If I couldn't have RMA'd it, then the value of the tablet would've gone down significantly.
I'm a little more worried about the TF201 developing issues later in it's life, so I probably wont be unlocking my device until there's a way around the warranty void. A $500 gamble is not worth a minor performance boost you might get from using a custom rom (IMO).
Edit: Just noticed you live about 30-40 minutes from me, Raleigh NC here.

Even if you are able to lock i it wont matter. The bootloader unlock tool provided by ASUS reports your serial number when you unlock kinda like a phone home mode. Using this serial hey generate some kinds of unlock code. This is the finding thus so far from the development forum and reviviewing the decompile apk file.

This. If you relock your bootloader you only limit what you yourself can do with the tablet. The damage has already been done as far as Asus is concerned
if I had 2 primes stuck the serial number of the other prime on mine (unlocked and rooted) then unrooted and flashed back to stock would an RMA work? I don't see why it wouldn't I'm just a little curious?

Voiding the warranty by rooting is nothing new.
It has always been that way since day one.
Only difference is that now ASUS has figured a way to know which units have been unlocked.
I wouldn't be surprised if other companies start doing the same thing.

Cant you use multiple unlock codes to make your own decrypter, that way asus never knows and you can re-encrypt it if you need to send it in for warranty

I am not sure this is feasible, An "un official" unlocker would of course get us half way there. Then we just need a way to properly re-encrypt that mimics the stock 128 bit encryption. It would be risky either way, and as we have seen, people are bricking devices already in the earliest stages of learning what works and what doesn't. I think that I even saw that Diamondback bricked his Prime, because Asus does not give us access to NVFlash ! (Virtuous ROM chef for Prime, our first non-Asus ROM)
So I think we are going to see a slowing of the initial rush out the gate to mod and develop for this.

Whatever the case, atleast asus has allowed us to unlock it with this simple to use apk.
Eitherway, the future for any android device (esp for people on this forum) is to go the custom rom way!
From what i heard, CM9 is already in the works and a beta is soon to follow!
hxxp://androidroot.mobi/2012/02/22/cyanogenmod-9-for-asus-transformer-prime/
Being able to block ASUS from knowing you have unlocked your bootloader using their tool would depend on the following:
Option A: is the package unlocks the bootloader and then sends a beacon home with your device information and ASUS then voids your warranty and blocks OTA. This could be resolved by blocking the call home.
Option B: which is more likely is the tool FIRST sends a call to ASUS with your device info, voids your warranty, and THEN returns the actual unlock code.
Option C: A dev develops a aftermarket unlocking tool.
The only way to beat option B would be to decrypt the encryption and generate your own code by inserting it in a custom installer or modifying the homebeacons dns and making a server to intercept the original message and respond with the correct code etc.

Asus knows if you have rooted? devicetracker

So,
As i was updating my prime today from .17 to .21 i noticed a link in the upgrade notification that said something like "track your firmware upgrade history"
Upon going there on my PC I entered my serial, etc and voila. Awesome "Seekdroid" type functionality however when i click to view my firmware history it shows EVERY SINGLE upgrade and downgrade. The Terms of Service claim that no information is sync'd or exchanged until you accept the ToS but now that i have, i am a bit concerned that ASUS has access and can see that i have downgraded my device multiple times. Ergo opperating outside the manufacturers specs thereby voiding the warranty. Any input?
Wow, good catch.
But i doubt that the clueless (as they have shown to be, time and time again) workers on repair centers etc will check any of that. (I can be wrong, hehehe)
Downgrading your firmware shouldn't void your warranty.
Asus publishes the firmware files on their website, so they shouldn't be considered as "bad"
Do you have a link to this online service that tracks your upgrade history? If it works for you based on information you input to the website then it should work for any Prime owner.
I am sure more people will be able to provide an opinion on this situation if they actually knew what it is you are talking about.
http://waveshare.asus.com/select_lang.action
Not sure if this makes any difference but it says "ASUS will collect your personal information only after you sign in this Website and agree to activate the service of this Website." So its only tracked if you use the service?
Also, if your only rooted, not unlocked, you should be temp unrooting using voodoo root tool. When you do that your device is technically not rooted when you upgrade the device. Once it complete's, you re-root it basically and should be oblivious to it. But I am no expert on these things by no means.
I think the title of this post might be a little alarmist for some people. I mean I have read the agreement that pops up when you register for the site, and the site does exactly what it says it will do, it tracks your upgrade path in order to help pinpoint any software related issues in case you need to contact Asus support.
It is completely voluntary and the service is pretty clearly described when you sign up on the web page.
Also Asus doesn't seem to consider rooting a reason to break a users warranty, at least there are reports of many users who have sent their rooted tablets in for repair and none of their repairs were denied because the devices were rooted.

+1 on this. I sent my TF101 in twice for RMA both times it was rooted with a custom rom and they repaired it no problem. Unfortunately, with the prime and the unlock, once you unlock you void your warranty fully. I have an earlier Tf101 that wasnt locked down like the prime was so even with flashing stuff to that, you still had your warranty because there was no agreement that said if you did your warranty would be void.
As a matter of fact when the newer 101s came out with the tougher encryption was one of the times I sent my 101 back for RMA and I even told Hai Trat that I only request they dont replace the unit with a unit that cant be rooted and they dont update the firmware at all so I wouldnt lose root. He said he would make note of that for the techs
I just tested the Update list option for my rooted Prime with .21 firmware. The site was not aware of my latest update. I did not use the OTA update because I am unlocked and used a pre-rooted .21 stock ROM image.

HUAWEI Y538: how to upgrade Lollipop to something usable?

I lucked into a sale on a HUAWEI Y538 smartphone at Best Buy the other day, knowing we have no Boost Network around here for the cellphone service. Perfect!
I just wanted it as a nice little media player and access to my LAN, like my KitKat tablet. Nothing terribly fancy. I rooted it with Kingo, hoping to remove that nag cellphone activation every startup. I have to press Accept, then Self Service comes in and I click the no button. In addition as many of you know, Lollipop has a lot of unwanted background apps running . I spent a whole day trying to tame this and the only good news is that I worked out the factory reset.
My real question is if it's possible to remove that startup nag entirely, but either way, to ask if it's possible to downgrade to KitKat or something else? As a WiFi-only media player Lollipop would seem to be quite awful.
I've been on computers for decades but no experience with Android except my happy KitKat tablet. If some kind soul could be persuaded to help me out, well that'd be really cool.

If I 'm reading that right they want me to log in every day for 14 days, which is kind of nuts.
To be fair the phone may possibly be rooted using Kingo (fast boot showed an "unlocked" message which I don't know if that means rooted but probably not boot unlocked), and for all I know that changes some of the information.
So I'm just replying FYI so you know how it went. Maybe I should do factory reset and try again?
Long day I'll go crash and see how it looks in the morning. Thanks for trying!
Joey
Happy here to report a partial solution, 1/2 way there!
If you take out the SIM card inside the phone it only nags once and saves probably 30 seconds of boot-up time. It's a great improvement!

I bought the same phone at BB ($10 on sale) to use like you do (unactivated). What you're trying to do is actually super simple. Merely put the device in Airplane mode, then turn back on the wifi (and GPS if you like). You will not be prompted to activate your device. You actually should be doing this anyway as it saves your battery by not having the cell radio constantly trying to talk to the tower.
In case you missed it, there is a firmware update to the phone that can be downloaded via the Emui app on the phone. I'm not sure what all the update affects, but it doesn't impact your ability to use the procedure I described to avoid the constant activation reminder.

COOL! Perfect it boots and no need to click anything further - and besides it's less stray microwaves. Also to report Huawei replied and said they accept bootloader code requests at: consumer (at) huawei.com. They say to include IMEI and serial numbers in the email. Both can be found in Settings >> about phone or underneath the back cover.
Where to go from here, I'd also like to disable sneaky RAM-stealing apps like Sprint cellphone and some apps I'll never use, such as most Google Play. Add decent firewall and decent media player, and have a good time!
Recommend root method I'm good to go.

I've read elsewhere (here on XDA) that folks have gotten root using Kingo root (mostly tethered to a Windows PC and not the app version). Note that this root method often requires you to run the rooting program multiple times before it is successful. I'm not a fan of Kingo after being forced to use it to re-root another device (it took well over a dozen times before root took). Also, Kingo doesn't use SuperSu, it installs a Kingo version of SuperSu which CAN be removed (not exactly easily) but users of the Huawei Y538 Union have gotten bootloops trying to remove Kingo's proprietary SuperSu, so not advisable at this time. Even after rooted you are not able to remove the pre-installed bloatware because of the locked bootloader (which is different than the carrier unlock). To be honest, I've pretty much decided to just not root this device and just install an SD card if I need the space...I'd rather do that than risk bricking the device when (for me) there's really no need. I'm going to wait it out and see if anybody can figure a reliable way to deal with the device without bricking before I do anything else.
If you do root using Kingo, you might be able to "freeze" the background apps you don't want using Titanium Backup. I've read that folks haven't had any luck using TB to uninstall the bloatware, but if you're just trying to free ram it *might* work. I believe the risk would be the device expecting certain apps to run, and if unable it might bootloop/brick. Without a custom recovery allowing a nand backup bricking seems like a real possibility.
Please post your results if you unlock your bootloader. It surprises me that they're offering this, as I thought they only supported carrier unlocking. If you're able to figure out how to trim down the bloat please share.
I'm currently using Google's Play Music app for music/podcasts since I've already got 20,000 song's uploaded and since I can't delete that app anyway. Otherwise I'd just use Doubletwist for offline listening.
In case you, or anyone else with this phone is interested, I ended up purchasing a cheap ($5 delivered) case for this thing. Overall I like the case, but if you have any questions about that, let me know.
Yeah that case is perfect. I might have found the same on eBay searching " Huawei Union Y538 Case Innovaa".
As for Kingo ROOT, I have one hit and one miss to report. The KitKAt tablet it worked and I un-rooted after I got my business done. But the Lollipop phone is another story. I run a really tight ship on the Windows end, and Kingo rooted Lollipop, I got some functions involving root accomplished, but it ended at some point (completely offline except for USB tether to PC).
I factory reset the phone and tried again. Kingo downloaded more stuff and my firewall asked for access to PCAccelerator and acdsee.. The former is considered a virus and the second an image viewing app, which I don't use (maybe it's payloaded who knows).
I don't wish to scare anyone nor besmirch Kingo ROOT's reputation if it's a wholesome rooting app, but advise great caution and use a firewall that notifies things like this (I use NetLimiter on PC).
So I await the boot-unlock code and hope I live to tell about it Thanks a million zerozed99! That case is icing on the cake.
For what it's worth, no reply from Hauwei, and yesterday I sent another SOS asking, if not for boot unlock code, even just a stock KitKat ROM for the Y538. We know that model ran KitKat as well as Lollipop.
It just kills me to see this cute little quadcore wasted with all the bloatware taking up valuable RAM and battery power as well.
Ladies & Gentlemen, distinguished colleagues at xda-developers... Please bear with me.
I started coding on Macs in 1981(1981!). I later went on to 5 years formal education in Computer Science at a decent University, and spent the better part of 2 decades volunteering for low and no income people- those were the best years of my life!
Now I'm on the old side, with some heart disease that has four stents in my heart and the no-fun life expectancy that goes with it.
Now, being a reasonably informed geek, I'm seeing some disturbing things I want to air out in "public" if you'll so allow me.
The idea Hauwei will send you a boot unlock code, I don't think it's true. They make it easy to fill out a form with at least four identifying informations, but I have YET to see anyone receive their code! In my case the form advances to a page written in Chinese! I believe this is a spy device and priced to spy on a certain demographic. The almost perfect unlockability and easy bootlock application with no one reporting being sent a code.... there's a reason.
Granted one thing: I've never owned a cellphone nor did I even want cell access from this. Maybe you've noticed the same thing(s) years ago. I just wanted a little quadcore computer to play around with, to access my LAN and play media, and this has me worried the kind of entities that design such forced options.
Oh well, no luck. anyone else going to wait a bit or should I trash this?
Can't tell you how much I'd like Marshmallow and the evil bootloader out of there for something else.
Lollipop is not so bad IMHO except for the lack of privs to access our own SD cards.
If you hold down the volume-down button and press the power button until the phone starts up you can boot into fastboot mode. I've read here in XDA someplace that there are 2 available builds of TWRP custom recovery for the y6, both work on our phone, tho only one of the builds works fully. I have not tried to install either on my y538 yet, but I will, and I'll let you know what I find out.
If you can get the bootloader unlocked, you should be able to flash SuperSU from TWRP.
I suggest you google the xda guide to fastboot. It is not very complicated.
I doubt we can locate any custom ROM for this device. However, if we can get rooted we can backup stock and then remove all the bloatware. ES File Explorer is great in root mode for managing the SD card.
More useful info: I pulled my SIM out before I fired up the phone for the first time, and when I turned on the phone it didn't download any of the extra crapware from Sprint! I have the Virgin version, and I expected all that stuff to download, but it did not. Also, if you look in the App Manager settings, you will see a few apps which shipped on your phone in the Disabled state!! You may wish to enable Lookout or others of the stock disabled apps. Also, without root, you can remove the Sprint ID app here, and disable any of the Google spots you don't want, like Play News or Play Movies.
This is my first Huawei device, though it's my twenty-somethingh Android, and so far I am very pleased with the layout of the settings and of the notifications tray. This is way liveable, and they allow us to disable most of the bloat.
Good luck!

Zenpad P008 Verizon LTE ZT581KL Rooting method?

I cannot even find any information on this device let alone a root method. Apparently from my searches methods for the zenphone may work but im not sure if I want to risk bricking this device, but verizon would just replace it anyway. I guess its fairly new? It came with MM and already has an OTA which i keep putting off while I am going to try out various methods to get this one rooted and unleashed since one verizon store essentially scammed me over my new s7 edge so another store refunded everything for me. Now I got this 4g tablet I want to fasten in my car and it would be nice to root or unlock and put some custom vehicle firmware on it or something like that.
I have the same issue with my new Zenpad 3 8.0 . KingRoot and some other rooting apps didn't work for me.
At least someone finally replies.... I am still stuck trying to root this thing. I've tried nearly everything to no success. Even the temporary cwm wouldn't work for me
Same here buddy. Why did ASUS remove such features as App to SD and multi user support?
Anyone found anything? I have the tablet too...
Well damn this sux, Verizon stuck me with another unrootable device, at least I can say I got my pixel in time to unlock the bootloader and route it but not much activity for it since decided to lock them down. I thought I learned with my G4 that's why I got the pixel got home just to find out they're going to be locked down too lol Oh God how I loath Verizon

I hear ya. I have this tablet too: Asus Verizon Zenpad Z8 ZT581KL with V.3.4.23. Despite my best efforts, the damn system update notification keeps coming up telling me to update to Android 7--which I DO NOT want to do since doing that very well could kill any small hope I have on rooting the device. Since this is a Verizon branded tablet, they made an agreement with Asus to lock it down like Gitmo, so any official bootloader unlocker will not work with Verizon. Maybe one day when Verizon get's their head out of their ass and understands that people have the right to screw with their phones, they will allow unlocking options--though I doubt it.
This would be a great little tablet, if Verizon gave us more control over it--Jesus Christ, you're still getting $$ from me on your non-unlimited data. Bunch of ****-tards---I used to work for them back in the day at one of their corporate locations in Folsom, CA. Sadly, I think it's that prison mentality (Folsom Prison) that must have been carried in the air a few miles to the Verizon offices there. That was WDTS (Wireless Data Tech Support)....I was there right when EVDO just came out/expanding (Before Iphones...closest thing would have been a BES-Enabled Blackberry, or a fancy PDA)--oh those were the days...
There are rooting options available if you understand Chinese--but even its for older software versions 3.3.x, etc, and from what I can understand, the flash might actually take (hackers take note: if the flash can take..maybe we can piece together a flash with proper rooted versions)...but since this is a Sim/LTE tablet by doing that it will screw up the radio (Cellular) and recovery partitions. But maybe something round-about could be done that does that, then reflashes modified signed firmware to root it--I dunno.
My google-fu is pretty good and I came across some cached, or snippet that said SRSroot might root 6.0.1 on the ZT581KL, but not sure now legit it is.
Unless more people get this tablet/devs play with it, I don't think we will get root/bootloader/recovery anytime soon. I wish I lived in a country that allowed multiple wifes, because I would do a bounty for root on this devices and give away one of my wives for payment.
I used the tablet mostly for navigation, but I want root/twrp for backup purposes, if I need to wipe the device crossing the border since police now wanting to look at peoples phones/tablets. I love using Waze since I'll be driving down the road with a FAT blunt smoking away, so it's good to know if cops are around.
Zenpad z8 running on Fi
I also have this pad. I bought it from Verizon because it's USB-C and I loathe micro USB and even more so because the helpful sales guy at Verizon let me try my Google Fi data only sim...and sure enough it works awesome after setting h2g2 as the apn. Would love to root it though I hate how I can only have one user account on this for now.
Kind of off-topic, but I can't find any clear answer to my question about the Z8 and Z8s. I'm considering buying one, but I do not want a data-plan. Do these tablets work without a SIM in them, or will I be stuck at a home screen that says "Insert SIM..."?

Of course you can use it without a SIM.
I just ordered this tablet. I'm sad I can't root it, but I mainly use root for adblocking. I will have to use DNS66 or BlockThis instead.
This method doesn't work?

Zenpad P008 Verizon root - no luck
I just tried One Click Root and that didn't work either. Upon chatting with support they were stymied by the lack of an 'OEM Override' debug mode setting.
Can anybody help, I'm new at this stuff. Plus I'm teaching myself. I've rooted some devices. Did some firmware jobs, kinda' familiar with Odin. But I've tried everything from KingRoot PC to adb tryna' root this thing (P008). Between this thing and that Knox MDM shizzle. Man!, Anybody got anything on these topics......
Anyone try Magisk?? I also want to root this thing. Cannot get a usb gaming controller to recognize either.
