[Q] [View] - Noob Question - Rooting - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I’ve been on this forum for a few weeks now and seen many posts on rooting/s-off etc, and I am confused over the options. (thanks to Globatron and others for their hard work). I was hoping that someone could give me the right reference.
I have the stock View with GB and the OTA update has been staring at me for some time now. I don’t (yet) want to upgrade To HC but I do want to do things like backups, remove Sprint bloatware etc. I understand that I have to root the device to do this. Can anyone point me to the steps necessary to root my stock View? Do I just run the prerequisite steps in Globatrons thread? Which steps specifically?
If I do this, and later decide to update to the OTA HC update, will that brick the View? Do I have to use one of the custom ROMs (and approaches) documented here?
Also, if someone here does a custom ICS ROM for the View, could we go from GB direct, or would we have to go GB > HC > ICS?
Thx for your help.

This thread does not belong in development. It belongs in the general section. The development forum is for just that threads that are about development (roms, kernels, recoveries, tools) and not for general how to questions or questions on how to root.

New to Flyer/View - Read this first.

This thread will always be a work in progress, there may be times when it stays static for a while due to the fluctuating nature of events if you notice it hasn't been updated in a while don't assume it is dormant.
Please do not post in this thread for support/question etc. This is intended to to be a ONE WAY THREAD. I write down the information and other people read it. Do not consider this as a rebuke to anyone nor an attempt on my part to indicate that I am "the authority on all things flyer" that is not the case. I am simply indicating that I will maintain a thread for information on all things development related. In addition Scabes24 will maintain a list of useful links in post 5. If either of us runs out space we will get a moderator to make room for more posts. If there is anything you feel is missing and can contribute to the thread then PM me an I will add it. The only exception to this is for ROM Devs who want to grab one post each after the general information to maintain an Index of their ROMs / releases, the ROM must be released to post in this thread, no announcements of upcoming releases etc.
If you're wondering why I said all this...the simple answer is I want a simple location for new people to get all the information on this stuff without having to trawl through pages and pages of posts in case there is a useful piece of information. It should all be in the first 5 posts + any posts the ROM developers use.
Anything that does not fall into these categories I will ask a moderator to delete from the thread.
Do not under any circumstances post a reply to say thanks or similar. If you want to say thanks, use the thanks button.

View needs a dedicated thread, maybe?
With the recent massive holiday promotion and sales of "Sprint's HTC Evo View 4G", we may need a separate thread for the Noobs who are getting confused whether they can use Flyer mods/roms/hacks. As a View user, even I am not always sure which of these posts pertain to the View.
Just a friendly suggestion to the gods of XDA....

Maybe when there is something worth posting for the view I'll do that, however for now everything is labeled Flyer, View or nothing if it applies to both models or is android generic.

Information on Rooting

Hey
Is there any where you can recommend a full explanation of rooting android devices and also installing custom roms to the device?
I do not know anything about this, but have been told that installing custom rom’s is a way to go, when using an android device.
and I have also been recommended the CyanogenMod way of rooting.
I would like a comprehensive explanation and maybe also tutorials for this, for a complete newbie like myself!
Thanks
---------
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, running ICS
The roll-up sticky in the I9100 General section contains links to everything you are looking for.
there are quite a few links in that thread, can you please guide me as to where to start, i am a complete beginner in this field!
In that post, you should be looking for anything to do with rooting. Only 2-3 have rooting in the title, so they would be appropriate places to start.
Here is a thread that you can start from, my advice is just to keep reading as much as possible.
Also most kernels/thread have instructions in the OP.

New to s3 - Questions about rooting + accessories

Hi Guys,
Just got an s3 GT-I900T moving from a HTC Desire HD.
Few questions in regards to rooting as I rooted my DHD which was rather easy.
My questions are
1. Firmware v Rom - What's the difference and do I need to flash both or..?
2. Anything you would recommend I should know that is different in the rooting process for the device?
Accessories related questions
1. I've tried finding it, but how much thicker does using the Hyperion 4200mAH make the phone, from photo's it looks to make it roughly double the size?
2. For the Hyperion 2200mAH - How more time does it bring the battery to, eg from a day to a day and a half or?
Sorry if my questions seem stupid.. they do seem a little stupid to me, but I did try searching - possibly I'm just terribly at seaching for things

1. Not sure if there is really a big difference. Firmware for me is a rom, custom roms are also roms/firmwares in a way
2. Read the Stickies in the General thread, it will help you to get behind the rooting process.
ps: I guess you meant GT-I9300T not GT-I900T

Yes I did mean that..
In regards to 1 - Cool, I was hoping they were the same, hence the stupid question part, thanks Chrismast.

In this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273 Chainfire said "No CWM and such ?
I have personally moved away from permanent custom recoveries, and I am no longer supporting them. On newer devices they cause flash counter and OTA flashing issues. If you really want one, others do provide versions of CWM and TWRP for most devices. Personally I just use Mobile ODIN to install ZIPs and Titanium Backup for my backup/restore needs. I do always want root though, and as such I'm still supporting CF-Auto-Root as quick way to root."
Originally I was going to install CWM, but yeah, what's the best way to go about this?

yes, you can use CF-Auto-Root whereas I did not use it as it was not available (?) that time, but I am sure there is a guide in that thread. Otherwise you could use CF-Root 6.4. Make sure you have the international I9300/T version though! Also a good start to read is here. For backups, once you installed CWM you will be able to do a nandroid backup. In addition backup your EFS folder and copy it to your computer, instructions here. I hope it helps!

New to Evo 3d..help with root?

hello.i have a Sprint htc evo 3d,android version 4.0.3.software version.2.95.651.6710rd.I would like to know whats the best and easiest way to root the evo3d and what is a good rom to run that is very stable and wifi and everything works..and a good kernel to run with it..i have rooted tablets and other phones before, but evo looks a lil complicated..sorry if posted in wrong section, and thank you again for your help..( i tried following these steps..-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218193) watching the video and going step by step..doing full root part..when i go and open revolutionary.and run it.gives me..(your device.shooter with hboot 1.58.0000 is not supported at this time..can someone please help me..
You can't find the relevant thread and follow directions? I'll even help you out, you'll need a 32bit unix/linux. Ubuntu has a nice bootable you can burn and use. Then you use the jpuntubear executable downloaded from their website within that. Granted the one provided by the relevant thread might work on a 32bit OS but I can verify that it didn't work on Win7 64bit. Oh and you will have to hotwire your phone, literally short circuit your phone to get s-off so you can put a working ROM on. If you just want root and ok with stock OS, then you don't have to short your phone.
Also, if you can't find relevant thread and follow directions how do you expect to survive in the world of custom ROM's?

Lurk More.
I have Windows 7 32 bit..
I also have the same issue. A couple of months ago I tried to get s-off and it failed with the same message. After not finding any relevant information I gave up and just rooted my phone with the stock rom. I have had several android phones (Epic, galaxy SII, Evo 4G, lg Optimus V) and never had any problems. Make sure to reply with an answer rather than bashing the person asking the question.
At the moment I just want to root it..and methods that I have been following don't work..

As others have mentioned, what is probably the most comprehensive compilation of information you will find on the web can be found on the link below:

Additionally, if you have issues with the "wire trick" to get S-OFF you can always just do the HTC unlock. You won't be able to flash HBoots but you can flash ROMs and Kernels (use fastboot to boot into recovery from PC).
I, for one, can state that I've done the JopunutBear "wire trick" successfully twice on a Windows 8, 64-bit OS. However, if you choose to try to do this know that you will be entirely on your own as they no longer support anything other than Linux.
