So...I just got my prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

and it's amazing after 5 minutes of playing with it! Anyways, I have the 27 build it looks like. I've had quite a few FC's already (random) and even using the XDA app on the prime, it FC's alot, especially when I goto create a new thread...it just doesnt work. Odd....
Anyways... I'm wondering if I should root as is, or if I should do some OTA's and get up to .33 and then root? What process should I take there. Also, maybe the OTA's will fix some of these FC's??
Additionally, if I root, maybe I can remove some of this bloatware.

I would just do the OTAs. Check the screen contrast and stuff on the different settings after each OTA let me know if you see the difference that some say if there. I never changed my setting much so I never noticed it. There is a thread around here explaining that in more detail.

personally i'm not doing anything until ICS is released in 8 days, run the updates and don't mess with anything till ICS, i'm doing this one by the book, i only plan to root if ICS isn't what it's cracked up to be or someone finds a way of porting the windows software over to the TFP or lastly some really really badass rom comes along , i don't plan on over clocking or anything of that sort or at least not until this thing is near the end of it's life cycle to me, which is about 1-2 years.. so yeah not rooting anytime soon here, at the very least i'd just wait for ICS ....

What's F'ed up, is everytime I goto settings --> about and do the system firmware, DMclient or whatever force closes. It force closes alot even not doing the about screen.
XDA force closes everytime I try to post. I will try a reboot. I havn't rebooted since I first booted it up from the package 15 min ago.
ugh..

For the record, XDA app crashing is a Honeycomb thing and not the tablet. Its been crashing since I got my Xoom last year and every Honeycomb tablet (I've used) since. Your best bet is to use Tapatalk.

Chugger, do you have a bluetooth device you can activate and use wifi to check for that issue?
Supposed to get mine on Friday.

that thread is b.s. there is no loss in quality or contrast afternew update. read my replies in that thread n you will know the real deal. he just trying to start up some more negative stuff on prime. plus he said he sold it and always talk about it in past tense. now how all of a sudden he got another one n updated. its clear now for me, other than games for prime, I can't believe anything he says. gets caught up too much in his stories and always changing.
Take anything he(Jzen) says with a truckload of road salt..lmfao.

Did you disable wifi and NOT installed the .33 OTA update to test it?
The .33 OTA auto enables wifi, so if you have installed it the best way to test the GPS is driving your car somewhere with the transformer prime inside and see if it loses lock or not.

I havn't installed any OTA updates yet and don't plan on it just yet. It's dead anyways and I have to charge it overnight. Only came with about 20% on it. I tested GPS with WI-FI on, and it was fine, havn't disabled WI-FI and tested yet though.
On my way into work tommorrow morning I can do that though and post back results of the .27 build. Why is the GPS on .33 worse or something?

@chugger....you should do a factory reset first.

[Q] ICS or HC

Ok - I just wanted a few opinions on what I should do.
I am one of the unfortunate people who had a perfectly working TP...Until ICS update. Now I have a continuous boot loop. I can only use my Prime for about 30 seconds before it reboots.
So I am going after work to return to BB. I called my local Gamestop and they were kind enough to hold the last one from the shipment they got today.
THE QUESTION: Should I immediately open the new one up and install ICS to see if it works on this one? Or stay with HC, until they fix the ICS update?
well you can only put it off 3 times, I say just do it. I reckon the issues are from a very early shipment that was just plagued. I may of course be wrong.

Did you try doing a factory reset on your current Prime after the ICS update? Maybe something is mucking up the works (sorry if that's too much technical jargon)...
You might find that the new Prime won't exhibit any problems. Certainly, neither of mine have any issues.

New firmware update today

Anybody know what it does? I'm currently installing it on my Prime. This will be my first update since the ICS upgrade.
Mine just finished updating... Not sure yet on what it was for.
Does it break root? I just got it, but haven't installed it yet.

Seriously..hmmm....I meed to check mines then for update...place update thread with any thoughts or finds on new firmware. I'm busy posting in another thread n we got new firmware. hope it doesn't kill my overclock..lol
I got it about a half an hour ago and so far I feel like the only thing they changed was the menu button icon in a bunch of Google apps. Now it is 3 vertical dots. I could be wrong but I feel like it was different before.
Besides that I don't notice any difference.
no update here in UK....
I wonder if this time it wipes the whole system partition in order to eliminate any remaining HC niggles that may/may not have been causing issues.

Were you rooted previously? Do you still have root?
looks like GPS driver gets updated.

yes!
edit, same link as above
I used the Voodoo Rootkeeper app to temporarily undo root, then tried to install the update and the update failed. I used Rootkeeper to give me back root, but my overclock got wiped out. I just ran the Gscript I created from the vipermod tool script and got it back and then had SystemTunerPro set it to keep the CPU settings on boot again, but I'm not sure what to do about the update at this point.
Tried installing and got an android that looked like it was is in surgery with a red warning sign above it....about to try again... I have root but that is all

I also have a custom boot anim which i am going to remove and retry now
You guys who have done stuff with root are brave. I'm waiting for the updates to slow down before I attempt any custom stuff. No need to confuse myself as to the cause of issues should they occur. I'm staying vanilla for awhile!!
Updated just fine for me on a rooted device. Restored root with root keeper. Did not unroot before running the update.

Thanks, I'll try it again without removing root.
Still didn't work. I'm going to remove my modded SystemUI and restore the original one and see if that will make it work.
I just upgraded. No issues, and root is still intact.
Update: Actually, I was mistaken. It broke root, but it restored fine with rootkeeper.

UPDATE:
2rd attempt failed as well died around 1/3 way, 2nd probably died at the same point I just didnt pay enough attention....3rd try was plugged in, I am at 45% so that shouldnt be the issue but thought I would try....going to remove root and try again
Mine seems to work just fine. Not sure why, but my prime is FLYING now...everything is super fast and smooth. Before it was fast, but not like this and every once in a while there would be a little lag. No more. This is even from "Normal" Mode. I can confirm that it breaks root however. My Prime no longer has root privileges.

Beta 11.1 - Update or not?

This question is for people in the US that downloaded the 11.1 firmware update and applied it. Did it fix / break anything? Should I try it and see if it helps with the rebooting issues?
I just want to know if it helps at all.

Been wondering the same thing. I actually read the entire thread on it, and came away with no real detail on what it has that may be different. I like to incorporate any fixes I can get my hands on, but there is too little info on this "undocumented" update. Folks were nice enough to make it available, but no one ever tore it down enough to know what it does/has. I won't take that kind of risk on... Probably best to wait for the next official, especially since that thread went nowhere, and was not too conclusive as to what this update may or may not do.

Oh OK..did only specific people get this one? Like Asus only made this available to people they contacted?
This is the thread
OP: Try to include the full release number so people know what you are talking about, specifically. In this case, its the ICS Update 9.4.2.11.1
This seems to be the bulk of avalable info on this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452933
In other words... not much. I thought about it... a lot. In fact I downloaded it last night, but so far, I am brave, but not stupid, I hope.
NEVER update to something that you do not know EXACTLY what it is, what it does(or is trying to do) and what is in it.
NEVER
Unless you LIKE having a shine "Spun Metalic" Brick... in which case, go for it.
I had the random freeze then immediately reboot bug. Really sucked and was really random. I couldn't pinpoint what was causing it at all.
Soooo, I gave 11.1 a go and all is well now.
Modded by MBOK
Um, where would I see it? Build is 9. whatever.. It updated automatically after unboxing and connecting, don't see an update available. Mine is working fine software wise, no reboots or anything

I have installed it and have been running it for a week or 2. I know that it has fixed my YouTube buffering issue. It seems that it hasn't fixed the lockup issue it wifi issue, but I have not had any reboot.
I would recommend it.
Ive been running it since a half hour after it was posted and its been very good. Everything runs great with the occasional browser freeze( doesnt matter which browser)one in a while which may be my own fault because of the way i hold it with one hand in the middle and my thumb touches the bottom of the display.

Hence why I posted this thread -_-
And so far people seem to be saying that it fixes up the problems a little bit. If I can get more confirmation of this, then I'll apply it. It's an official ASUS beta for USA users only, so that's why it's not "untrustworthy".
Updating now.
I don't mind trying new things, and I'm still within my return window. I'll post if I notice anything new, but I have had 0 software bugs to date.

It's not an OTA. It's a beta that requires manual install. Or are you receiving errors on manual installation?

I think you have to set the brightness to 50% and something else for it to go into "update mode" or whatever.
I've had it installed for over a week and a half, and it fixed my re-booting issue.

I'm used to searching on my tablet to see if it needs an update. But you said this was a manual.
However, when I got to the Asus Prime Firmware update site, the newest looks like 11, not 11.1.
I've bite the bullet to manually update to the beta 11.1, I will report back if it worked for me. I've had reboots/crashes/and lockups. Not too many, but enough to make me mad at this expensive 64gb tablet. Let's see. I've applied the update without a factory reset, hopefully a factor reset isn't needed since I've done a few after the orginal ICS update.

opening apps for 1st time is slow but after that is butterly smooth.
screen swiping is damn smooth.
love how google now works although i don really use it.
quadrant score is around 3.3k in performance mode
and again screen rotation take 4-6 seconds!

I seem to remember at least one Nexus 7 review said this slowness was a 'feature' - i.e., to prevent accidental rotations...as such it might be intentional.
My screen rotation animation starts after one second and completes a half second later. If the virtual keyboard is up, it takes an extra second for the rotation animation to start. I haven't experienced any 4 to 6 second delays but it could conceivably be slower with more resource-intensive apps.
Awesome update, running stock unrooted, web browsing is much, much better, its actually enjoyable now. I havent tried chrome yet, was only using stock browser with default settings with flash set to always on.
Project butter makes things run smoothly.
Google now is pretty awesome.
Thats all i noticed for now.
Great job asus!!
Update went well. Chrome running great. Weather Widget stuck on Centigrade. Scrolling is nice and smooth. No complaints after an hour of use.

i m afraid i ll disagree
after 3-4 reboots..
performance IS better though dont excpect to see the butterness of a galaxy Nexus or Nexus 7. Stock launcer is by far improved, faster smoother and very very responsive. I noticed some lag when scrolling on portrait mode but it was the moving wallpaper...disable it and itll be ok.
screen rotation IS noticable faster
opening apps IS faster though i noticed a small hickup when opening some of the times
Google now is working lovely, fast and loud. When in portrait at lock screen the google now icon dissapears, u have to landscape it to appear and use..:silly:
Chrome is a bit faster...not much, but it is better at least in responsivness...no ANR till now. Stock browser still better..
Nova launcher wich i use needs a clear cache/data and then its absolutely amazing
stock gallery takes about 3-4 sec everytime to open ..thats bad
Youtube app seems faster overall to me..
Maps just the same..
seems to me Asus did a good job here...just good

I got the same message and even rebooted a couple times with no success. Then i gave up and left it alone, and like 10 mins later my prime notified me that it dowmloaded the update and is ready to install. So i guess anyone with a greyed out check update box, it will eventually download on its own.

*UPDATE*
Finally began downloading the update after the 5th time of rebooting and then checking for update. The install took roughly 18-20 minutes. No issues with the install so far. Slightly laggy, but that's normal until a few reboots after firmware update (every firmware update has been like that for me so I'm pretty sure it's normal).
So far so good

I'll be holding off updating until a root method is discovered, the reason being that I'd like to restore my user apps with Titanium Backup, as I'll be resetting to factory defaults right after the upgrade. Not taking the chance of crap performance manifesting itself later after my god-awful experience with ICS. If by the end of October I'm still dissatisfied with my Prime, I'll be selling it at a loss and saying adiós to ASUS.
I got the download, but when I try to install it and rebooted it said it failed. Went to check update again, it's says there's no update.

It appears same issue when doing OTA to upgrade to ICS .28. This thread has some soft of information can be refer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908030.
I had to update manually when it is failed for OTA. You may need to download the complete ROM and update it from SD card.

I got the download, but when I try to install it and rebooted it said it failed. Went to check update again, it's says there's no update.
Anybody else with the same issue?

Still 4.1.1
I took a screenshot before the update. Looks like new bluetooth and kernel changed.
If there's a new kernel maybe we have stock 1.6 again?? Anyone who updated use a cpu controller so we can see how high it goes stock?

1.4GHz...
I like the update. It seemed to have sped up my tablet. Don't get the annoying kb lag when I type and havent seen any ANR with browser and I'm currently downloading a bunch of stuff on play store. Currently it's downloading NOVA 3 and everything is still snappy.
EDIT: K finally got it to ANR in browser lol. I loaded a few heavy pages. Took a while though which is good.

Just got the update here..
And lost the power/wifi etc control widget! I don't see it anymore!
Do you still have that widget in your prime?
Thanks.
WTF?
What the hell???
This update is awful. Been using it for the past 20 minutes and have had more ANR's and frozen screens with the stock browser than I've had the past month combined.
Tried a cold boot and it improved nothing.
Not happy. Going to bed angry now, but may have to resort to a factory restore in the morning... but seriously? Should I have to reinstall all of my files and apps for this "improvement"???
Imagine if everytime you installed a Windows update it fored you to reinstall all your software ad documents/files???
ww out also, seems to be the same update recently released for the TF300.
Going through the battery quickly. It seems that "Download Manager" is hogging a lot of CPU. Have done a cold boot, this has not fixed the battery drain.

No issues so far....
I just installed the update and have not seen anything to cause me any concern. Usually I listen to my podcasts at night at work on a creative BT stereo headset. I would have to say the sound is a little better then what it has been, so perhaps something was tweaked to enhance transmission or clarity. Since the pad is on my desk, its not like distance was ever a factor in BT performance as I experience it.
Wireless seems just fine as well......I am getting more bars in the same location then I usually do, but I havent tested it extensively. Could haev just picked up a more favorable access point.
Browsing seems more crisp then it usually does. Pulse seems to be more responsive instead of pondering.
GPS is surprisingly........same (wasnt expecting anything here getting better)
Settled down now, "Download Manager" process has stopped hogging CPU. WIFI connection speed is a lot faster.

Don't ASUS provide a backup app? All you really need probably is wipe dalvik cache (but that needs root).
After banging my head on the table due to the failed JB update over and over. I tried everything that does not involve unlocking my bootloader.
No luck with that
Of course it said no updates available after the failed JB update... :silly:
but, now this update popped up today on my tablet, I said "what the heck, try and see what happens".
Well, I 'll be damned, this time it worked!!! Updated the dock firmware at the same time too!!!
They must have changed something in the update procedure due to all the people who were unable to update before???
Anyways, finally I am running a stock 4.1.1 JB ROM! :good:
P.S. I was literally considering unlocking it today, just finished backing up with Ti-Pro and the alert showed up on my status bar.

Me think too! Oh Polaris office got updated again.
Doesn't feel any faster to me though but I got a ipad mini now for that now.
I've been wanting to root for a while now, but seems to be very difficult. Is this new version going to make it worse?
I got excited when I saw that there was a firmware update, bu tmy wifi still disconnects during sleep even though I have it set to always stay on during sleep.
I'll try a factory reset later, but I'm not expecting anything to work. Looks like ASUS is either ignoring this problem or doesn't know about it.
