[Q] Phone enters boot-loop while tying to root it - HTC Amaze 4G

So I unsuccessfully attempted to root my HTC Amaze. I unlocked my bootloader successfully, and followed the directions from one of many online guides; specifically the "Zerg Rush Root" method (I hope you guys are familiar with the method, the guide on this forum seemed to be the manual way). The problem occurred towards the end of the process where the phone finally reboots itself into 'root' mode.
Let me describe the steps I took to get to that point. I apologize for the length, I wanted to be as in-depth as possible. Please bear with me.
After unlocking my bootloader, I would execute the "Zerg Rush" program; the command prompt would pop up, do its thing, and seem to finish with no errors. I press a key to finish and close the command prompt when it asks for it, and wait to see if my phone went through any changes. No change. So I reboot my phone. Again, no change. Thinking there might've been a hiccup somewhere, I repeat this whole process once more with the same result.
I then realize that I didn't extract the "Zerg Rush" program to the directory the online guide told me to extract it in. I didn't think the directory made a difference. So I moved the folder to the instructed directory and executed the program once more.
This time, in the command prompt, towards the end when it lists "xxx zerglings sent" and "finding a new path", there were extra commands that I haven't seen during the first two tries. The command prompt then gets to the point where it says "awaiting response from device" and my phone starts to reboot. This is when the problem occurred.
My phone got stuck in a boot-loop (the droid emblem rocketing upwards followed by the HTC logo) with no sound. This loop went on for about 15-20 min all the while with the command prompt continuing to display "awaiting response from device" until it finally booted and displayed the lock screen. I slide the unlocker and immediately notice the phone is sluggish, has no sound, doesn't vibrate on touch, and has no service. Apps and Widgets might've been missing from the homescreen too but I cannot confirm this with certainty.
After a few minutes of panicking, I decide to reboot the phone. Luckily, it booted like normal, in non-root mode. All the functions returned and is currently in its factory setting. Bootloader is still unlocked.
At this point, I'm scared to re-attempt the rooting. I fear the infamous "Bricking" of the phone which pretty much renders the it irreparable.
So my questions are:
What could've caused this? Could it be because of the first two unsuccessful attempts?
Are there any precautionary steps I should take to ensure my phone's safe operation?
Is it safe for me to attempt rooting again? And if so, which method should I use?

How long did it take for you to type this up?
Did you try this thread: [HOW TO] ROOT HTC RUBY / AMAZE 4G
In the x amount of time that you spent typing that up you could have already had it rooted.

Lol you just pulled a "too long, did not read" on me. I did spend a good minute trying to articulate my experience. My main concern was whether if it was safe to attempt rooting after what happened. I'll take your response as an All-Clear and get right to it. Thanks

It's pretty much impossible to brick your phone with S-ON right now

[Q] 3 Step Root Help

I have been trying the 3 step root for a good while now, and after everything is pushed to the phone, it tells me to "choose the bootloader option and press power........" if you did it this way you know what im talking about. Anyway, my phone never boots into bootloader. In all but two times of trying it has stayed at my normal homescreen. when i finally get to the boootloader, a very rare occurrance, i press power, let the rom flash, and when it should ask me to update, it gives me the attached picture. Its so frustrating because I'm a noob. please help!
I didn't use Easyroot but from what I've read you need to follow the instructions in that pdf file I linked you exactly. Apparently some steps may need to be repeated multiple times.
This user had the same warning as you after the OTA and said he got it working by just following the instructions and performing steps until it worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15632108#post15632108
I've tried it over and over again, and typically got no result, but thanks for leading me in the right direction. I'm not running custom firmware... To my knowledge. I'lltry to reinstall everything on the phone and computer that has anything to do with adb like one of the posters said. Again, thanks!

tale of a rooting gone terribly wrong

I can laugh about it now, but...
First let me say that I am new to rooting, but not to toys Here's my train wreck comedy of errors, maybe someone can tell me how all of this was even possible?
I started by rooting using Doomlord's rooting script. That went super-easy. Then I decided I wanted to do a nand backup, so following the instructions here I went and installed ROM manager and used it to flash Clockwork Recovery Mod. CWR wouldn't load when I tried to get to recovery mode to do my backup so I asked around and I discovered that my Atrix was not unlocked. It all goes downhill from there.
Following all the unlocking instructions in the Pudding sticky, I used RSDLite, and the IHOP sbf (since I'm on Bell Canada). Well that looked like it was working, but when RSD showed me at 100% reboot after it was all done, the program stopped showing any further status to say it was complete. I've seen this happen a lot before doing other smartphone activities, and I knew it wasn't going to proceed further. So after giving it another 10 minutes just in case, I unplugged from my PC. And yes, of course, now RSD protests that it wasn't done. Typical. I shut down my phone and rebooted. Time for the Fastboot stage.
(at this point I want to point out that BriefMobile's guide is wrong. you do NOT skip to instruction #13 if you are on gingerbread because that does not work. I ran into a couple of other people who reported the same problem with his guide)
(also at this point, I want to clarify that all my USB drivers needed for this to work were installed, and many of the links provided by Pudding sticky are out of date and don't work. or both so I had to get software from other sources and cross my fingers)
So, now onto the fast boot. But wait! Briefmobile guide (linked as the guide to use in Pudding sticky) never informed me I need to put my sim card back in now. or not. I decided since NO instruction is being given either way, I left it out. Fastboot works fine until I enter the "fastboot oem unlock ###" part. Then the cmd window showed zero progress. Once again I wait 20 minutes this time. Nothing. Finally I sigh "here we go again" and unplug, knowing I am now going to be soft bricked, and I was right. I am now showing "unlocked" at bootup, but I am also now stuck in the logo boot-loop. Tried to reflash, that didn't work. Tried to fastboot boot again, that didn't work.
Finally I caved in and did a factory reset/wipe. My phone is now restored to 2.3.6 but I am now also rooted and unlocked like I wanted to be when I started all of this.
The problem is that none of this went anything nearly as smooth as others claimed it would be. Every step of the way caused errors. RSD didnt work properly in the end, and neither did the fastboot. The instructions for Bell Atrix 2.3.6 are all extremely outdated and/or irrelevant in some cases. Before all this happened I was considering flashing custom ROMS. Now I am absolutely terrified to do so, and would rather just use TiBU to freeze some bloatware and leave it at that. How did this all go so terribly wrong? Are days like this normal in the custom ROM scene?
no ideas anyone? I'm still baffled how my phone went through the train wreck that happened in the above post but still manages to be unlocked and rooted after the factory reset and 2.3.6 re-installed OTA. I still have root, and the phone is still unlocked.

Yep, sounds a little like the night I had when I unlocked the bootloader. If it helps, I've done a little bit of rom flashing since and have had exactly zero problems there. (I'm not a new-rom-every-week kind of gal, just wanted something more functional than stock.)
So that SBF was known to cause a soft-brick; RSD Lite would predictably choke on itself and your phone would display "failed to boot" with a bunch of options. You enter the fastboot oem unlock command and keep going. My fastboot procedure went as advertised, but upon reboot it did stick for ~15 minutes on the startup screen and I had to do a battery pull. After that, up it came and everything was peachy.
Did you pull the battery and attempt another reboot before doing the factory reset? Just curious.
Yeah, second battery pull was because both the phone and the PC cmd window became non responsive after I executed the final stage of the OEM unlock procedure.
The phone went into bootloop. Wouldn't reboot. Had to hard factory reset with the 3 finger salute
Huh. Well, unlocking the bootloader also causes a factory reset, so in this case your end outcome was the same. Sorry it was such a pain in the meantime.
Seriously, though, that's the hardest part. Installing CWM recovery and other roms is a piece of cake, just do plenty of reading before changing anything.
well looks like I got all the final kinks worked out. I froze all of my bloatware with TiBU including Motoblur Launcher and I'm now running my phone using Launcher 7. Everything's pretty zippy now and I think I may have just extended my phone as a keeper for the rest of this year

[Q] Please help, I think I bricked it rooting

was using zedomax's root method and got a bunch of errors "too many devices, more than 1 emulator" and now it won't finish booting. Gets just to the point where the unlock ring should come up and then nothing...
I can pull down the status bar and thats about it ...please help. I have the insurance, but will they be able to see that i started rooting it...
I would try to install the RUU to get it back.
It's probably not Bricked.
You can also check out the more full unlocking procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919
I believe one or both these procedures could be started while in the bootloader.
I'd try the RUU first though.
Look in the Sticky thread in Dev for the RUU (an EXE you run on the PC).

This happened to me as well. Then i realized i have both my old Epic4g AND my new EVOLTE plugged into my computer. I unplugged my epic and voila. it worked just fine. If it still doesnt work, try restarting your PC and redo the process.
Thanks guys for your answers. problem is resolved, but I will what happened in case anyone else has this problem.
I couldn't get the drivers to install on my laptop so I went to the desktop and ran the root. The error messages I got were like this: after the second reboot (supposed to reboot 3 times) it would say "device offline" and it filled the whole screen with that line. Then it said "error too many emulators" and then it would say it was done and that is as far as it would go. It did not boot a third time. I could reboot it, but it would only get as far as the screen JUST before the unlok ring comes up, and that's it.
After posting this thread I read another thread where someone suggested holding the volume down and power to bring up stock recovery and doing a factory reset from there (rookie mistake, I have had the Epic Touch for a while and forgot about the Evo's stock recovery). That got me back. THANK GOD! But still no root.
I didn't want to give up trying to I went back to my laptop and still without necessarily "installing" the drivers, went ahead and tried running the root and VIOLA! It worked flawlessly!
So I don't understand what was going on with the desktop though with the "device offline" and "too many emulators" thing, so if anyone could shed some light on that, I would appreciate it.
glad to hear you got it fixed but if you would have had to filed a claim then you can always say you lost it or something like that.

[Q] Rooted my phone. stuck in boot screen. PLZ HALP

when i open into recovery and go into twmp and i go to reboot>recovery it says no os installed. my recovery is completely gone. what do?
Ok so I was searching, a lot, and found that I can turn the phone back to OEM. unfortunately every guide I have read says it needs to be s-off using firewater. When i do the "adb reboot" function it gets stuck at the htc boot screen and I cannot perform the second step in making the phone s-off. what do I do? Is my phone legitimately bricked? Like hard bricked forever?
I also ran the RUU. It goes through and when it gets to step 1 of 7 it stops and says "unknown error occurred" I go through the error recovery steps and it still does not work. Just trying to keep all the info here so you understand the situation I'm in. It also boots into recovery mode, obviously, with the power button and volume down button.
got it. could go ahead and delete post.
Don't have the thread deleted, but instead explain how you finally solved the problem so others may learn from your experiences...

I know you've already sorted it out. But first, this phone is not bricked if the screen comes on. Recovering is usually not hard at all, just a matter of knowing how to do it.
Second, were you referring to a warranty claim for a phone being not bootable due to mods that you did? That isn't covered under warranty, and is immoral. Take responsibility for your actions; and don't jump the gun and think you have to get a new phone after just a couple hours of unsuccessful attempts to get the phone running. If you want to root and mod these devices, you are going to have to learn to be patient and work through little quirks like this.
Lastly, the phone needs to be bootable to perform firewater s-off.
Thanks. yea my only two friends that do this kind of **** are like seriously the most pessimistic, negative assholes I have seriously ever met in my life. They kinda just scared me into thinking it was easy to brick a phone and totally mess it up. After some research i just found all I had to do was run an RUU and make sure the phone was relocked.
seriously. they are real negative nancies.
Ok for those of you who may ever be in the situation I was in I will write up how i fixed it. very simple and took probably about 20 minutes start of download of tools to finish. This was done on windows 7 but i'm sure it is pretty similar on windows 8 as well.
In order to do this you will need to know that holding the power button AND the volume up button simultaneously emulate a battery pull and that holding the power button AND the volume down button enter recovery mode. If you are stuck in a boot screen or splash screen like I was you will need to emulate a battery pull and them immediately switch to enter recovery without actually removing your finger from the power button.
Then you need to make sure you have the right tools. you can find them at these locations.
RUU- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2757462
ADB- http://www.mediafire.com/download/5s2nfws9wkj9gyq/adb-fastboot.zip
Now you need to make sure your phone is either "***LOCKED*** or ***RELOCKED*** when you enter the recovery mode.
You can do this very easily. Plug your phone into your computer and enter recovery mode. Make sure the phone is in Fastboot USB mode and not Hboot. Open the folder titled "Android" in the adb kit you downloaded from the link above. Shift + right click anywhere on that folder(not on a file) and choose "Open command window here" type in the command window "fastboot oem lock". It will show as "relocked" after you do this and it reboots. This will allow you to run the RUU without any issues. Always make sure the phone is in "Fastboot USB" mode.
Now run the RUU executable and it will automatically pick up your phone assuming all of your drivers are in order. Just hit yes to everything and it will run through what it needs to. If you do not have a progress bar on your phone's screen as well as your computer then you messed up somewhere. start over.
If you try to do this on the At&T htc one (m8) without actually relocking it first the RUU will fail at step 1 of 7.
Good luck.

Then stay away from those guys! Sounds like they don't really know that much, wrong attitude, and you are probably already on your way to knowing what they know, if not more.
This phone is pretty hard to brick. As long as you aren't flashing hboot or radio, and don't flash anything intended for another device, its pretty difficult to brick this phone by modding it. The condition you were in was not a brick, and not even close. Some call this a "soft brick" but in my opinion, there is no such thing, its either bricked (requires opening the phone to recovery, such as JTAG or replacing motherboard) or its not. What I call it is "something is wrong with the phone and you just need to do the right steps to get running again".

Glad you sorted it out, so nice job.
Although RUU was probably a little overkill. RUU is a useful recovery tool, although a bit of a nuclear option. But good last resort. Since you RUU'ed, you will need to unlock the bootloader again, and flash custom recovery to get back to where you were originally (phone setup for mods) if that is the intention. If the intent was to go back to stock and stay there, RUU is a great way to do that.
You probably could have just gotten back up and running by using adb to wipe cache, re-install custom recovery and flash a ROM.

I think I have turned my brand new HTC 10 into a concrete block...

Hello all!
First of all, I am no developer.
Long story short.. I purchased an HTC 10 because I was sick and tired of my at&t galaxy s5 being bootlocked. I received the 10 and set out the next day to root it. I followed a video on youtube (not saying that the info was not correct...I may have done something wrong...not trying to discredit anybody) to the letter and lo and behold I ended up in a bootloop. My heart probably came close to a complete blockage at this point. This bootloop lasted maybe a minute before it would reboot. So... In my infinite wisdom I chose to relock the bootloader. Oh Boy!!! Fun times were ahead for me!! As soon as I relocked said bootloader, the bootloop increased its timing to about 1 point 5 seconds. I remember waking up on the floor in the fetal position. Now I am stuck with a phone that adb will not recognize. It does however recognize the device at the fastboot devices prompt. So my question is this.... Is this a salvageable phone? If so, How would one go about fixing this problem?
*** Relocked ***
htc_pmew1 pvt S-ON
os-2.28.617.8
I would prefer that the money I spent on this thing would amount to something more than a small ant bed.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Also I have been doing a lot of digging around and (I may be wrong) but. I could not find this scenario in the forums here. I apologize if this has already been covered.
...So..after looking around for a bit more, I discovered out that there is a way to flash a ruu/zip from an sd card. I have tried multiple times with what I thought were the right ones. As I am unable to boot into recovery, I feel I am limited as to what I should do. I have read about that I should wipe dalvik but I am very limited in my knowledge on an android system and would prefer to not mess this phone up anymore than it already is. I was trying to root and I used TWRP as the recovery but I never made it to the end before it started the loop. The Phone is an htc 10 unlocked version. and it just constantly reboots about 3 seconds apart. ADB says no device connected, so I cannot execute commands that way... really at a loss here. all the tutorials I have read refer to using and and being able to boot into rrecovery. when i boot into recovery, I get an immediate reboot and the 3 second bootloop forever. Is there a way to use twrp to somehow resolve this?Is there a tool that will help me at least get into recovery mode?
SOLVED... Ran across Batchtool by sneakyghost. Quite the bunch of tools there! Ended up solving my problem by placing the stock RUU in the root folder as the batch tool. Before I could not install from a factory RUU (would not recognize the phone through ADB or install the RUU. After the install of the batch tool I was able to get a clean install back to my factory settings.. Now I am free to mess it up again!!
BIG THANKS TO SNEAKYGHOST!!!!!
I'm unsure why the batch tool has worked for you and the sdcard method didn't - getting fastboot to work and all the bits and pieces together (drivers, Windows VCRedist, correct fastboot, correct adb) is usually more error prone than just identifying the correct zip and placing that in your sdcard root.
At this time, I'm a bit in a "scratch my head" mood, thinking this is weird. Same zip? Really the same zip didn't work from sdcard but would work in fastboot? I think I haven't come across that myself yet (non booting phones are a daily thing, almost).
I wish I had the time to analyze your steps with you, so I could gain understanding as to why that happened, so I can use that in the future, but alas! I have no time for XDA and deep digging around in issues of other people. Lately I can't even solve my own phone's problems anymore due to too many other things going on.
Well, glad it worked for your phone, anyhow. I'll keep this in mind for the next one messing up his/her phone.
