Has anyone else had this problem? I plug my Photon into a USB power adapter plugged into my car's cigarette lighter and the phone displays the message that the device is charging but the percent of charge continues to decline. I have changed USB adapters and USB cables but it still happens. If I use an AC adapter and the same USB cable the phone charges correctly.
Is it a software or hardware problem? I was unlocked and rooted using several of the current custom ROMs and the charging process in the car worked then. When I re-locked and went back to stock and re-rooted then this happened.
i am having the same issue as of yesterday. Did you ever find out what the issue was?
im guessing that the car was off and that it was a foreign car...
Numerous issue could actually cause the same symptoms, Apps/games in the background... failing alternator, failing cigarette lighter, failing car adapter...
car not running while its charging could also cause this issue depending on charge level of the battery and the volts of the battery...
What you'll need to do is eliminate the possibilities..
Try with the car on and the phone on...
try with the car on and the phone off...
try with a different adapter for the car...
try with a different usb cord...
try with a magnum 44 aimed at it...
Try with a different Car is also another good option.

I have the same issue with the incar charger and using a computers usb port to charge my phone..(doesnt charge when under load ..ie-dowloading something)...i think that it is the charger being underpowered..example..
Stock a/c charger puts out 850mA
Most computer usb and standard car usb chargers only put out around 500mA

Mine charges very slowly in the car. The other day, I plugged in at 32%. Drove 30 minutes to get home, and it had only reached 37%. Plugged in at home, and within 10 minutes had well over 50%, even though I was actively using it then.
This is on stock rooted, btw.
The stock drivers must use a very conservative power draw when plugged into a relatively low-output power source. By contrast, the power draw from a high-output AC adapter must be quite aggressive, because it charges more quickly than other phones I've used when plugged into AC.
It did turn out to be caused by the car charger being underpowered. I went to BestBuy and bought a "high capacity" charger and all is good!

Which specific car charger did you get? I'm having the same problem too!
The Photon needs at least 850mA charger to get charge currently. Otherwise it charge slowly or not charge at all.
Can anyone post a link to a specific charger that is working great for you and charging fast while in the car?

Hello there,
I bought Samsung's MHL to HDMI Adapter (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MHL-HDMI-Adapter-Packaging/dp/B005LGUDKK/ref=pd_cp_cps_1) for my at&t SGS2, video and audio worked on my HDTV without hassle, but it did not actually charge phone's battery. when it was hooked up it kept 'rising bar' on battery icon in notification area and I was under impression it's truly charging as well playing the video on my TV, but it showed 30% batter warning that's when I realized it's not charging but faking to show charging!
Is is normal or abnormal, but I read in wiki or somewhere when it's hooked on MHL to HDMI Adapter/dongle SSGS2's designed to charge the battery as well, I need to your help to determine if I have a faulty one or I should turn on/off anything on phone!

It will only charge your phone if the TV is a MHL compliant TV. I don't think any TVs on the market are compliant yet.
There should be a spot on the adapter to plug your charger into. That is the solution for non-compliant TVs. Did you plug your charger into the adapter?

Thanks quarlow for quick reply. Yes I indeed plugged the charger into Adapter in order for it to work, that worked flawlessly, but the question is why the battery icon on my phone was showing 'charging bar' while it was not actually charging, that's mysterious.
My TV may be not MHL complaint as it's 2 yrs old already, but MHL complaint TV's don't need the MHL adapter be powered by external chargers, if I am right.

I too have an MHL adapter but it isn't the official "Samsung" one, but it will charge the phone overnight, but I've never left the device plugged into a tv and the adapter for an extended period of time.
I imagine that the adapter needs to draw power to send an image out to the TV, and the phone simply assumes that a charger is plugged in but rather than actually getting a charge the power is being diverted into the MHL adapter, and maybe a little bit is going to the phone but not enough to offset the drain of displaying an image on an HDTV.
I'll give it a test drive tonight and see if I get any different results, but I bet I have the same result.

From what I can tell the stock charger is only 700MA and will charge the phone slowly when not in use, however if it is inuse I am sure it will only be able to keep up with the power used.
I use an HTC charger most of the time it is a 1000MA charger and seems to be a bit faster. I have not tried this with the MHL connector tho.

I believe this is your answer as well. I did not have the opportunity to test drive the MHL adapter last night, but what I would suggest is turning off whatever you aren't using while streaming. Check out the link below, and the last review for a similar problem from another MHL adapter, although MHL allows charging I imagine if you read the spec on it (the tech spec), it probably only supports 500 mAh max. Although it costs $100 to read the draft spec (which is stupid).
I will find out if I experience the same drain as well but I imagine what is happening is the Wifi/Data connection is draining faster than the charge is going into the battery, which is probably why standard use doesn't cause a problem. However streaming coupled with whatever else is going on is probably the culprit. So I'd suggest if you are going to stream anything while connected to disable non essential services (Sync, other data connections, bluetooth) and clear RAM so only what you want is actually running.

So you mean if phone is hooked up with MHL adapter while it's not actually streaming , the battery percentage should go up (meaning charging) like 8% ->to 9% -> 10% ? I can try this.
I know the MHL adapter will charge your phone if you aren't streaming, I had mine plugged in sent text message, watched a video clip I shot, looked through pictures, and left it plugged in. I also used to charge my phone via the MHL adapter (charger into MHL into phone) regularly but the charger kept popping out of my adapter if I checked my phone.
I'll look into it more this weekend and get back with you about it.
Can confirm this is indeed a problem. Would recommend under clocking the processor

My processor is oc'd on demand but it drained it really fast. Probably a glitch in their version of GB.

I did kinda experiment, MHL adapter is indeed charging the battery while streaming, but battery drains faster than being charged, this is the outcome.
1. I plugged the phone while it's not streaming ..battery percentage increased from 78 ->79->80% and so on.
2. I took the phone off the MHL adapter and played the same video (flash based) it drained 10% of battery in 20 minutes.
3. I hooked the MHL adapter/charger and streamed the same video (flash based) it drained 5% of battery in 20 minutes.
I would like to conclude, MHL adapter charged the battery, but flash based video streaming drained the battery faster than the rate in which the battery was being charged.
Has anyone noticed that phone does not charge while using GPS. The charging indicator is on but when I look at the stats it says discharging at -450 mAh. Is this the way it is and if so, is there a fix? 1 hr 42 m with 73% display on battery use and 43% charge remaining, but was plugged in the entire time while driving under an hour home. I am using the same Motorola high performance charger that every other phone is charged fully even when using GPS.
are you absolutely sure the charger is giving the full 1A?
What sensor app are you using to see the battery discharging?
Mine charges normally with gps on.

I was curious so I tested this with "Battery Monitor" I have it plugged into my laptop currently which only gives +500mA. and not the +1A that you get from a wall/car/high power usb port.
the app is showing +257mA with GPS on and functioning normally.
So charging good here... Might be something with your motorola charger? It could have a sensor in it to detect 'trickle charging mode' that is improperly engaging when connected to the HTC causing the charger to put out a minimal 'sustain only' level of amperage.

you need a charger putting out 1A ... most car chargers put out 500mA so find a good one off monoprice
Here's what I'm doing. I have a Belkin 2.1A(2100mAh) USB car charger dongle. The problem is, once i connect the USB cable to it the phone registers it as "Charging USB" and does notcharge anywhere near as fast(power-wise) as if the phone was registering it "Charging AC". I'm not keen on using a power inverter to get the full AC charge so instead i am going to go pick up a cheap micro USB cable, splice it open, then disconnect the data wires(green & white ones) & then tape it back up. By disconnecting the data wires, the phone will no longer think it's a USB connection and then charge via AC, getting the best charge possible.

I've found that using the included USB cable with a Belkin dual port USB car charger allows the phone to charge as if it were plugged in to a wall. I'm guessing the included cable has a different layout than standard Micro USB cables.

I'm guessing that I have the same belkin dual port (2.1amp and 1amp ports) and the best I've seen out of it is about 250mah charging. This is using the supplied usb/micro hdmi whatever cord for the phone.
I have seen discharge rates off the charger of 750mah which is the highest I've seen on any phone. I'm guessing if you are using the nav on your phone with the screen on, it will probably still be using battery while plugged in.

Possible, but says AC charging in Battery Monitor widget. I will post a few pics.
Here are a few Pics. you can see a couple of things.
-Charger rated at 950 MA out. and no other phone I have owned lost a charge while driving including TBolt, Charge, Bionic.
-Shows as AC charging
- Spikes of good charging detected
Put on Normal power mode today on the way in. live wallpapers did not wrok, just flickered. 3G on vice 4G. Battery still went down, but above 90% on 40 minute drive in. Screen low but on. Bluetooth speaker.
Maybe it is the iBolt car mount. See review online. will try without dock this afternoon on my way home.

Try playing pandora when the phone is 100 charged. After 45 minutes on the car mount (and yes it is plugged into a charger and all indicatros show it is charging) and the charge level is 84. Using the same charger but plugged into the phone, playing Pandora for 45 min starting charge level 68. Ending charge level is 100.

ok, drove home off the window mount and just on charger, all same except full brightness on screen.40 minute drive. came up 7% battery vice down from 100 to 43%. nedd a few trials to confirm, but looks like window mount is throttleing juice.

i have seen spurts up to 913 with GPS off and screen just turned on. Using battery monitor widget. Not on window mount, just charger.
I can confirm. The car dock will not charge your phone atleast not with the screen on and nothing else running but battery monitor widget.
I bought one and tested it extensively yesterday. I used a Verizon 1a charger and a generic 1a charger. With the dock and both chargerz the phone DIScharged(as in LOST battery power) at between 100ma and 200ma. Without the dock using the same chargers and changing nothing on the phone the phone charged at between 50a and 300ma.
I did the test several times to eliminate any random things the phone may have been doing in the background.
After doing that controlled test I played with it some more and no matter what I did I could not get a positive charge with the dock attached even in airplane mode with the screen backlight at minimum. Without the dock using the same chargers i ran Pandora and a police scanner both outputting through the phone speaker, gps, wifi, mobile all on, and screen on auto and still had a very small positive charge.
Moral of the story DO NOT BUY THIS DOCK unless you dont mind it just being a piece of plastic that holds your phone in place.
I wonder if there's a quick mod to it to get it working right. Like the soldering of the USB chargers I've seen.

I just went ahead and bought an extra battery so I wouldn't have to charge in the car. Only takes 20 seconds to pop in a new battery.
Can charge both batts while I sleep at night.

I was looking for a high current charger for my Android tablet and there was a review that talked about compatibility. Some of the high cap chargers appear to be designed for Apple products and the pin wiring is subtly different. So, on some non-Apple products, the charge is only recognized as a lower power, 500mah charger and the users reported that some devices would normally charge and others would not. Some of the dual port charges also split the power. The 2.1 amp port and the 1 amp port cannot be used at the same time, depending on what is plugged into them. This was also brand specific. I ordered the Amazon Basics 2.1 amp dual charger and will see how that works. I have noticed a difference in charge rates between my Motorola charger left over from the Blackberry and the Verizon OEM one. The VZW one is faster.
I do the same thing I have been doing since my Windows phone days.
I use the AC cord plugged into a 12v to AC adaptor(screen set to 100% bright and no timeout).
I drove 6 hours last week ruuning Google Maps/GPS & my battery was 100% charged when I got to my destination.

I just got my microUSB to HDMI adapter from Monoprice and it works well. However, is it supposed to maintain current to the phone? I have it all plugged in and I get an orange light on the phone but I lost 10% battery power using it for 15 minutes. Doesn't seem right?
P.S. Monoprice customer service is excellent. I can't speak to the longevity of the products but the service is excellent.

I used an AC outlet 1 amp USB charging plug to power the system with a standard micro-USB cable.
People have observed problems with charging the Rezound through a car dock, so maybe it's related to that problem as well.
I tried charging using the Monoprice cable and it charged fine. If we were unsure before, I can say for sure now that it is the adapter. I don't know if it's the one sold by monoprice or, like you said, a bug in the system. Guess I can only watch 60 min. of video (tops and end up with a dead phone) or I'm out $7... kind of think I'm out the money... and no need for the cables I bought with it. Hope others read this.
The other Monoprice cables are fine. No beef with them.

I understand that there may be an issue with your MHL adapter you had purchased. One thing to keep in mind is that our phones are really powerful now and draw a huge amount of power. So one thing to first consider is your power draw, secondly remember most androids can tell whether it’s connected to a computer usb port or AC power supply by checking if the data pins are shorted together. Since the data pins will be in use with the MHL adapter it will never register as an AC power supply and will not draw more than 500ma of power available to a computer usb port. This is not a limitation of the MHL adapter, but rather a design flaw in the implementation of MHL itself on the phone and perhaps design flaw is a little harsh but with the implementation of the MHL on the phone, not the adapter itself. Hopefully this clears up some things for you and if the adapter isn’t going to quite work out for you I can still issue an RMA for a return for you if you like I would just need an order number to get the process started.

I wonder if a Y adapter out of the phone to split the adapter and a charging cable would work? If there is such a thing for micro usb.
Don't think so. The phone won't draw the higher 'AC' charging current unless it sees that the data pins are shorted. If the data pins are shorted, you won't be able to get data out for the HDMI connection.
Basically, while it's nice to have only one port to keep things simple, a separate HDMI port and USB port for charging would have worked better in this case.
Well then I'm returning for a GNex.
If it's tethered via usb to a computer with an HDMI out to TV/receiver can you stream from the Rezound? And would the charge via usb be enough to keep it alive for a movie?
If not then I'm definitely dropping mhs. Connection problems and this issue... Bah.

Maybe depends on what else was drawing power on your phone. If you turned off everything else, maybe you would have enough charge to stream a movie. My battery was dropping pretty fast, but I didn't try to optimize by turning off mobile data, wireless, etc...

That would be exactly the same for the same reason, while connected to your wall charger the phone can receive 1000mA and will be in "AC" mode, when connected to your computer or another device which uses the data pins your phone will be in "USB" mode and can only receive 500mA, since your phone is capable of using as much as 1000mA this will not be enough to charge your phone if you are doing anything power intensive like say playing a movie etc. It will only supplement the battery power and keep it from draining so fast.
It should make it through a movie though. I have not tried mhl so I don't know what it draws from the phone. If you instal "battery monitor widget" from the market it will tell you what your draw is and will keep a history log of it with posts every 5 min, try playing a movie then go and check the log and see what it drains on average.
My phone easily makes it through a movie if I start with a fully charged battery, although it does steadily drain it.
As far as the nexus, if anything it is probably even worse with the bigger screen.

On mine, the screen turns off as soon as it shows on the TV. If you unplug the connection, phone screen comes back on.

Are you using the phone to watch? Meaning is your screen on? It would seem that's the only way the screen size would matter. If you brought up the nexus due to my comment it was just a joke because of all the warring threads. I'm in love with the Rezound.
I have a one amp usb charger that cant seem to charge the Note while streaming audio over LTE, HSPA, or locally with beyond pod. With the screen off, i lose a percent every five to ten minutes while streaming audio through winamp, flash via the stocm browser, or beyondpod, and the note doesnt lose power while playing local media through beyondpod or winamp...but it doesnt charge either.
And when im charging via he wall adapter and im using the devjce it charges extremely slowly...this is a slow chargibg device, but really, cant i even charge it in the car while playing local audio? Can a usb device pull over a amp from a car charger? It was hard enough even finding a one amp adapter at brick and mortar stores. Are there more powerful adapters? Can the GNote pull more than an amp? Whats does the wall adapter pull?
What adapters are you guys using? Any reccomendations?

Yup....same issue here. I've brought it up elsewhere but still no concrete answers on alternate usb chargers that solve the discharge/slow charge during use.

I'm being told that a Motorola brand, mini USB car charger with the blue light that glows, has the pins on the contact that are shorted which makes it act like a home charger.

Another post indicating improper charge using any cable but the OEM just showed up. Maybe that's why the dock works.... Going to try my 2.1A charger with the Samsung cable. Using a universal Belkin gave ne a %3 loss while charging using GPS and streaming music for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

No go on the factory supplied cable with the 2.1A adapter. It actually lost more charge that way versus the Belkin cable and 2.1A adapter. Not sure what else to do other than buying a Motorola car charger locally to test it.

I'm now getting feedback that indeed the Motorola charger will correct this issue and allow for charging to full while device is in use. ebay has them for $7.59 with free shipping. Or find one locally.

Be careful using non OEM chargers/cables. I seem to recall a thread (from International GNote Forum) on the usb connector on the GNote being extremely sensitive. I would hate to see anyone messing up their USB connector for charging.

Well I tried this adapter from Motorola and STILL discharges when used with GPS and streaming music.

Nav, Pandora and a 5.3" HD screen running, probably just exceed the phone's recharge rate. I have found the very best recharging combo, while the phone is under load, to be the Moto charger and....wait for it....a cheap Hyperion 2600mah replacement battery on Amazon! I have no clue why.
The oem Samsung battery barely creeps upward while running nav and mp3's at the same time at about 5-10% an hour. Still beats my previous discharging.
But inadvertently, I found my backup Hyperion batt charges at a pretty quick pace with the exact same load. I haven't measured it yet, but it is at least twice as fast. Let the geniuses figure this one out, because it makes no sense to me.

Using the moto charger, I started with a full battery, watched 70 minutes of streaming video in the Plex app this morning -- with a mix of 4G/LTE -- and unplugged with a full 100% charge at the end of that 70 minutes. Good stuff!
Just drove home today streaming Pandora in the car for thirty minutes with brightness on auto and Bluetooth audio to the car radio on my OEM Samsung genuine car dock. I was at 95% and when I got home I was 100.

I just recieved this Car Charger 12V Cigarette Lighter to USB Adapter bought on ebay. it looks to be of decent quality and it's assembled with screws so it can be dissassembled and re-assembled. I plan on opening it up and shorting pins 2 & 3 to enable fast-charge. I'll report back after a road trip tomorrow
Well, I opened it up this morning, and it looks as though the data-pins are already shorted, so I'll see how it works today as I'll be out and about.
