[Q] Installing, using and uninstalling Android? - Android Development on Bada

I know that there already exists a thread for stupid/noob questions, but I have lots of doubts and would like to get them clarified at one single place. I know I could have got the answers via browsing through the pinned thread but it's a long thread to go through, so I'm sorry if the questions are already answered.
Q1: Can someone link me to the latest and safest method of porting Android to Wave S8500?
Q2: After installing and trying Android, how do I COMPLETELY remove it?
Q3: Which bada firmware do I need to have before installing Android?
Q4: Is the Android market available via Wi-Fi?
Q5: Can I use apps like Skype or play games like Angry Birds?
Q6: I know that the method is on dual boot, but just wanted to get it confirmed. Android installation provides dual boot of Android and bada, doesn't it?
Q7: Will installing Android cause any hardware problems to my device or any software problems to the bada firmware I have installed?
Q8: If I have Android installed, then can I update/degrade my bada firmware OS or do I need to remove Android before updating/degrading bada firmware?
I would appreciate if someone answers these questions.
Thanks.

The only thing you must do is to download Google Chrome and translate the site
http://christec.blogspot.com/2011/07/android-auf-wave-anleitung.html

Well alot of questions like how do I uninstall, updating bada and possible issues are not answered there. Thanks for the reply though.
Anyone who can provide me with a detailed reply?

1. In Polish
Xda topic
2. it's described in polish version of tut just use google translate
3. Again polish tut.
4. Yes but, on 1 of 4 my android installations it doesn't just try your luck, if it doesn't work reinstall android and it should help
5. Yes, most of all apps work correctly, but not all ;]
6. yes, power button for bada, call and power buttons for android.
7. if you will not try actions like dangerously high overclocking cpu, it shouldn't
8. you don't have to uninstall it but after flashing u will not have working android, u'll have to reinstall it.
good luck and sorry for my english ;]
cheers from Poland ;}

Thanks, but I can't find any method of uninstalling Android.

i just unistalled android and reinstalled the rooted version so i can overclock
first connect your wave trough mass storage
if you want to uninstall you have to download zImage & stuff: from the tutorial topic
in the galaxyboot map youll find mkext2images-remove.sh
then just put this one in your bada storage and remove the "-remove" part from the name
and then turn your phone off and boot in in recovery mode and wait till it reboots it self or boots to bada ( if it takes more than 10 minutes just press menu button to reboot it )
thats how i did it
i didnt understand it too i had to try it like 10 times before i finaly understood how to do it

Thanks for the help friends. Everything sounds little complicated for now, I'll install Android once I get a clear idea of the process.

if you want to overclock your phone to 1.3/1.4 STABLE (batery wont go empty faster ) id flash it with the rooter version

The process looks complicated at first, but it's surprisingly easy.
I don't know that using this process you can actually brick your phone. Brick the firmware, easily, but Download Mode always work and reflashing is easy as 1.. 2.. 3!

true, but if your overclocking hardware, you almost always have some small risk of damaging hardware in the long term, even when not raising the voltage.
i find my wave will get hot enough on a hot day without getting overclocked, temperatures DO rise also from frequency increase alone, continuous exposure to increased temperatures can shorten hardware life, people should really think carefully before overclocking.

I wasn't referring to overclocking
I should've been more specific.
I personally think it's pretty ridiculous overclocking a mobile device... There is next to no extra cooling and the components are packed into a tight case. Sure, as an experiment but it's stupid to have it permanent. Hell people don't overclock laptop CPU's and they have better cooling than phones.

Horrible battery after update

I'm the slowest person when it comes to new phone stuff and I only just recently updated my mini pro to 2.1, mainly because I don't have acces to a pc with windows.
SInce the update however, my battery life is worse than ever. I wnt to crush this phone on the floor. Any alternatives to this? I don't have timescape or synchronisation on or wifi or bluetooth.
Hmmm.....get ur phone rooted.....for it would help u save more battery.....however...check dat ur phone does not usedata trafffic ol the time....and for charging tips.....dnt charge ur phone until its <10% and charge it until its complete...avoid disconnecting it in between....nd if u have rooted use SetCpu and Auto killer memory optimiser...set em at ondemand nd optimum settings...
Thanks, I will try to root, I barely even know what it means, but I will try.
Any other tips?
try downloading an app that auto kills apps that run in the background without you noticing
Guys, rooting is probably out of the field of my abilities right now, I don't have time for countless hours to learn how to root and then USE it. I think it requires putiing in commands to do anything...this is definately to dificult I think.
Please, is there anyone who can give simple advice what to do? Ya all made me update saying battery will be better, well it is worse lol so this is kind of your fault. Just kidding but please help

Root is very simple. just search SuperOneClick.
If u cant root, android is not for you. You hav to learn to install custom firnwares
Lol I don't think roms are a neccesity for me. Even dummys can enjoy some of Android world.
When I root I'm worried how to do stuff, like uninstal apps. I did find some apps in Market, like battery calibrater.
So can I just root and then use root requring simple apps? I can't learn commands like in terminal emulator.
When I root, do I lose any functionality of phone, do I have to reinstal my old apps like Opera?
And is stuff like xrecovery and jit, whatever that is obligatory?
Sorry guys. All I want is recalibrate battery by removing battery stats and look how much trouble I have with it lol.
Were you on android 1.6 operating system previous to your update? If yes, it is possible to step back the update using xrecovery but then again you are a self-confessed newbie. I would say it would be worthwhile to learn how to root and install xrecovery, they really are not hard to set up.
Follow this video tutorial, it really is easy.

Samsung galaxy player 5.0 (Few random questions)

Hi all,
I was looking into overclocking and underclocking the hummingbird processor withing my galaxy player 5.0
The overclocking is obviously for fun (I know the risks to the CPU and battery), the uderclocking is more so for power management.
I so far have not been able to go past the 1 GHz on the stock kernel.
Has anyone else tried this on stock/custom kernel and gotten any descent results?
I'm intrested in your expierences.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I'd upload the 5.0 compatible kernel and ROM into my device to use it and try it out; I found it on this sight, but I have been stuck on attempting to backup my current Kernel and ROM, as I do not want to loose it.
(I'm trying to do it "manually" with a program that was meant for something totally different, its interesting on the parts of data I could dump, but nothing is usable).
But aside from that, I have been trying different things with just the root on stock kernel and ROM, and I have found a few things that were fun to play with like the droid wall and an SD speed up...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
honestly I do not see anything else I need/can use the root for right now...
An I missing something? Is the android that open...?!
(This is coming from someone who worked and worked to unlock an iPod touch and turned it into an iPhone and partially into a pocket PC)
I remember the kernels name: Entrophies Kernel (idk how to spell it)
(Its on this forms sight in a different category somewhere)
-I'd use it, but first I'm putting back the stock charging and battery management, I personally do not like the settings he has, Li-Ion Polymer batteries like a complete charge, and a steady charge with a taper at the end...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Any thoughts and experiences on anything I had not asked about is also welcome.
Everywhere I look for information about this device, I keep finding random one posts with questions and never any answers.
Also, people seem to not know about this device, and also not know how to modify and back its data up, including me with my failed atempts... o_o
Ultimately, if I can figure enough out about this device, because everything I have found so far is scattered about online, I'd like to make a post and dedicate it to the galaxy 5 player eventually, with up-to-date (or as close as possible) info on many things. Because thats the biggest problem I see, nothings ever centralized.
If you have root then This should work on your 5.0 player. I just installed it (stock) to try after seeing your post and i already have my 5.0 overclocked to 1.1ghz
Tegrak Overclock is a great utility to over and under clock your CPU.
[root]How to back up your current kernel U.S 5.0 YP-G70
Download MDump Partition dumper v0.02: link in signature!
Open MDump on your device and select "mmcblk0p11"
Rename the file: mmcblk0p11.mdump -> zImage
Touch "Start Dump"
Move the file to a linux machine and put it in a tar ball. (example command: tar -H ustar -c zImage > kernel.tar)
You now have a backup of your stock kernel which you can reflash using odin! (kernel.tar)
Update: I just noticed that you wanted the ROM too, it's mmcblk0p13. You can just dump that as well; rename it "factoryfs.rfs" and include it in the tar ball.
I plan on eventually adding support for clocking at 1.2 GHz and voltage control - I've just been busy with some issues with my I777 kernel (SoDs... ) and busy with real life in general.
I won't be just grabbing rumirand's patches as his use a slightly different approach than the netarchy-style code I prefer.
wow thanks everyone for the fast replies, I'm replying to each post in order, I added quotes to show which ones I am replying to.

Thanks for the link, I added the app to my device, and overjoyed, I clicked on the 1.3 GHz setting and applied it!
I do not see much of a difference as my device never lagged, if that, before.
I tried a few benchmark utilities, and it seems to surpass almost all the single core CPU phones I looked at...

I really like your kernel, you have done a nice job with it!
I was just wondering if you are keeping a single serries of the kernel or one with the modified power management, and one without?
Reason asking, is that I'm an EE, and I know a few people who work with battery management, and they all tell me the Li-Ion Polymer batteries like to be fully charged. I'm just curious as to your approach/reason behind stopping the charge just short of the top?
I like your selections for the custom charging with the kernel for quicker charge times... when I eventually get your kernel onto my device, I'm going to see if I can change settings while its installed, kinda like a power charge for when needed, and a regular charge for over night for less stress...
-------------------------------------------------------------
idk, I'm new to android, I've been stuck in i-Devices lingo for a long time and I'm slowly figuring this android stuff out...
So far, the only real thing I actually needed root for is overclocking and underclocking, droidwall, and tor... I like how open the system is (aside from the kernel/boxroom seeming to be locked when my friend tried a program called adb on it the other day).
Just curious, anything fun I can do with a custom kernel/rom? the only thing I see it can do so far from searching a few links is themes? idk, i need to look into it more...lol
I came across running ubuntu linux on the device through a vnc, even though its installed on the device... I was thinking of trying that if it looks like its ok...lol
I'm just a bit excited, I have this thing that can do so much, but idk what to do with it other than using it as a free wifi phone so far...lol

I'm an EE myself. That's odd - all information I've ever seen says that Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries do NOT like to be fully "topped off" or "trickle charged".
I'll try to dig up my sources later, but, from memory:
Overcharging them can result in metallic lithium plating out, which leads to permanent capacity loss. This is why all Li-Ion chargers stop charging once current drops below a certain rate in the constant-voltage phase. In the case of almost every Samsung I've ever used, CPU/power usage counts against the charge current limit - so I'm REALLY paranoid about the charger terminating properly, which is why I make it cut off earlier, as a way of offsetting some of the stress on the battery that the charging rate bump creates.
Also, Li-Ion batteries stored at maximum charge will lose capacity far faster than ones stored at around 50% charge. (This is why almost all new devices have batteries only 50% charged or so.)
I may eventually add a feature to disable the increased charging rate at runtime, however, in the case of the Galaxy Player:
It has a 2500 mAh battery, so 800 mA is actually still less than C/3 charge rate for the battery, whereas on most Galaxy S phones, they charge at 600 mA for an (approximately) 1650 mAh battery, making charge rate slightly more than C/3.
I also reduce charge rate below stock near the top - the technique is inspired by this: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/20/apple-patent-application-points-to-denser-batteries-improved-ch/

Well, on many Android devices, root is needed to kill carrier bloatware. It happens that wifi-only non-carrier-branded devices tend to be less mangled and require less debloating. (Often none...) I've frequently run stock system firmware with custom kernels on wifi-only devices for long periods of time - but carrier-mangled devices almost always need an immediate debloat.

Few questions:RR/Siyah/UnVlt/BT Keyboards..!!

Hi all,
Im not a noob around here I have been lurking for a few years since I had my HTC hero and have been flashing my S2 for about 5 months now, very impressed with the amount of development here ...
I understand most things about flashing etc but am still unclear and have found it hard to find answers for the following:
I have Resurrection Remix 2.2 + siyah 3.3.2 + dualbooted with omega v15 4.0.3
1. Am I better off changing CPU frequencies/governers/voltages with the built in "performance" on Ressurection Remix or using the Siyah eXTweaks app
2. If I apply some settings in the extweaks app, such as an undervolt/BLN... will these settings apply to my second rom? + also, If I change settings on main rom, then load second rom, then go back to main rom will the settings still be changed on the main rom or do they get wiped.
3. I have one of those stupid small mini bluetooth keyboards which are about the same size as the phone and are under £10 on ebay... I also have a bluetooth mouse.. The bluetooth mouse works fine and stays connected for as long as I want, however does anybody know why the connection to the keyboard constantly times out after a few minutes? Very frustrating as I bought it to use with MHL adapter and have trouble reconnecting after its lost connection... I bought it because it was cheap and I dont have a lot of money to spend on that kind of thing, but if anybody has any other cheap alternatives can you post link.
4. A lot of the time recently, my phone crashes when watching a vide with MX player or playing a game... it just hangs.. dont know why, ive had RR running stable for over a week now with no tweaks applied and its still happening...
5. i have 4 copies of every folder showing up on memory card not enough space to copy data to laptop and format... any advice?
6. Advice needed on whats the best undervolt settings for me,I see multiple threads for Siyah _ extweaks but every time I mess about with that I end up breaking my rom and changing it... but when it has worked the battery life is great!
Apreciate anyone who helps or has any advice to offer, I will give thanks to you all.

1 make sure that they both are on the same settings.
2 I'm pretty sure it will only affect the rom you're on. Not both. Might want to check the dual boot thread though
3 try to forget the device and reconnect it/reboot then try to reconnect it
4 did you do a full wipe when you installed it?
5 I'm pretty sure there is a fix in rr FAQ on the op
6 not every device can handle being oc / uv.. If you break the rom on the setting increase it by 25/50 until you get it stable
Hope I could help

well the only little more advice given may be never under volt or over clock ur beast (GS2) since it never likes the same, they r only done on some specfic issues so keep the default settings
also the duplicate file issues its no more with 2.2 if u fallowed the extended installation steps in the FAQ properly

Do you mean it never works the same? I see, it's never been stable for me... however the extra battery life vs. risk of having to reinstall rom is a hard choice.. maybe if keep even more regular backups it may help if things go wrong..
And I have reinstalled 2.2 properly following the extended which I always do. Still have 4 copies of every file folder, and it's showing up the same in windows as well now. But i dont think it's taking up 4x the space...
Is there an easy way to fix this or am I going to have to reformat memorycard? is that best done on the phone or on windows?

[Q] Q: Whats up with the ram

Hi Guys,
I am on ICS 4.0.4 and my S3 shows 779 MB, which is always busied by 680 or so!!!
I checked an S2 with ICS 4.0.4 and the memory is 830, and is busied by 450 on average. (S2 has larger memory than S3 on ICS4.0.4???)
So what is wrong with the S3 memory? i keep on killing apps all day and night to bring it to 450 or around, I dont have too many programs, and, i am not using except two widgets, checking on the background processes annd programs, most of the system's stuff is running on its own, even if i freeze some using Titanium pro.
Anyone has the same problem (if i can call it a problem?!) is that normal??!
Why would you consider it as a problem? Android is best at multitasking. You don't have to kill apps, its the nature of the beast so to speak to have a semblance of the apps running in the background for your convenience.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using XDA Premium HD app
Bigger screen and stuff like Smart stay and S voice eat up extra Ram.
Yeah it's really dumb to kill apps and clear ram the whole time, phone will feel sluggish because it needs to fore up stuff all the time that would normally sit kindly and wait for you in ram... You are making your phone slow and killing your battery

Okay, i got it, No more killing APPS , now the question is, how come the S2 has more overall ram than the super S3, on ICS4.0.4??? considering the 779MB to the 830? its just a noob question

Deodexed ROMs have their .apk's (which are basically the application packages) repackaged in a certain way. An "odex" can be thought of as a collection of parts of applications that have been pulled out and optimized before booting. This speeds up the boot process - in a way, it preloads part of the applications - but it also makes hacking those apps difficult because part of the original code is already extracted somewhere else.
Deodexing is just a process of putting those pieces back into the original applications. It takes a while to extract those parts and build the .dex cache (aka Dalvik cache), but only because the relevant parts aren't in an easy-to-access place for the system. The advantage of this is that an app can be modified effectively and the developer doesn't have to worry about conflicts from the separate odex part of the code.
So, short version: "Deodexed" ROMs have all their apps put back together. If an app can be themed, for example, a deodexed version of that app will not get messed up when the modified .apk tries to mesh with the odex of the original un-modified .apk. Because it's not there.
If you want an aftermarket theme, you need a deodexed ROM. I'm not sure if deodexing can be done to individual apps within a non-deodexed ROM.
The search on the site is horrible. I use Google and type xda after anything I'm looking for

Query on RAM....

Yeah it's really dumb to kill apps and clear ram the whole time, phone will feel sluggish because it needs to fore up stuff all the time that would normally sit kindly and wait for you in ram... You are making your phone slow and killing your battery

I suppose "standard ROMS" have no apps or anything in the "Dalvik cache" ? (as all apps have "stand-alone" APK's ?) ... correct ?
well, I guess its widely know how android manages memory, and clearing ram is more of a performance inhibitor than a booster. I gave up all hope when I took my s3 to the service center and was given the solution of clearing the RAM repeatedly to solve the horrible ram issue.
the problem i was and still am facing is, the ram usage increases automatically within few hours of usage with hardly any apps installed. its extreme as it crosses 790mb and stays in that range. whats bad is apps keep on restarting in the background, phone slows down terribly ( switching between apps, moving out of an app just to stare at the app drawer 3-4 secs for all the apps to load, even the keyboard takes time to pop up). So moderate ram usage is good, but high ram usage is bad especially when it causes to slow down basic use. now what problem i am left with is deciding whether to root and flash a custom ROM and void the warranty on my one month old device, as both the times i revisited the service center the only thing the guy did was format and reload the firmware, which didn't solve anything. this was prevalent on stock ICS as well after the JB update via kies. as a last resort I am thinking of trying an official firmware from another region. as Indian one was causing the issue. my friend got his s3 from saudi and he hasnt had such severe problem(certain sluggishness is acceptable on a bloated stock firmware). so i am thinking of flashing that firmware. is it safe to do that? and i wouldnt need root access for that right, only odin and the firmware correct?

Generally RAM usage depends a lot on running widgets.
I personally use only one widget on screen at all times. (Google search) which is enough to get the job done for anything. And I run only 3 home screens
I would usually have about 200 free ram
Also Im on Omega 34 rom which is by far best (In my opinion for RAM management). It automates in such a way that 200mb ram is free at all times.
I really dont care much about warranty ,the first thing I do when I get an android device is to root it. (You do know you can unroot right ?)
So if RAM is really so important to you its best to root.

yes I am well aware of rooting/un-rooting and other basics, had done all that on my S2(i9100), also found it more fun and efficient than stock but time is the only factor that's stopping me from experimenting. and thanks for the omega tip. I am certainly going to flash a custom ROM, after trying out few official ones, When I do, I would definitely go for Omega, alot of people recommending that one.
Omega is good as is WanamLite, Foxhound and Hyperlight. Smoothest I've used were Foxhound and Omega although I'm running WanamLite at the moment. Smoothest version I've used.

[Q] Im bored...

Hello guys.. I'm a flashaholic.
The reason i'm here, is because i've just realized, that i haven't had my quick fix for some time now..
Everything seems so stable, except the *mic* issue, but hey, i fixed it with a hands-free.. Otherwise, i'm very happy with my phone, it works, it doesn't use up that much battery, and it doesn't crash, you can even do normal stuff to it.
But to the point.. I really, REALLY miss AOSP, especially the theming.
I can live with the occasional bugs, though i wish it could be at least somewhat stable.. *You know, im not that picky*.
But the one thing that keeps me from using AOSP; is the camera app from Sony, because i like taking pictures of my son, and the environment..
Are there any Camera app out there comparable to the Sony equivalent?
Oh, the urge..

I have the same urge, I wanna get the full output from my Xperia Z2, feel all those four cores working in my hand. But that one Sony Camera app stops me because it's beautiful. It's matchless. That's the only reason I'm not changing my ROM and be bound to what Sony's put in my phone.
I am in the same boat here! I want to flash PA so bad especially with all their features but then the camera app, the noise cancelling features and x-reality etc is really stopping me from doing so
i use to be in the same boat before i noticed there is no point to flashing roms when im on a rom which does what i want
perhaps you should find a rom which has what you want
Same here.I literally used to flash a new ROM on my Nexus 5 everyday. As has been said though, the stock Z2 ROM does everything I want it to and rooted with some xposed mods its perfect.I just have to learn to live with my phone the way most other people do.
just a note
formatting then writing a rom to your system slows your device ALOT, it also cause alot of other issues but that comes after long wear n tear

Does this include doing a clean install? I mean doing clean install also slows the system? I've done clean install (re-install the stock Sony Z2 ROM) for 3 times till now. (Via Sony PC Companion)

firmware upgrade
flashing custom rom
flashing ftf via flashtool

all of those wear bout the same, its a matter of which one you do the most
in this case, flashing custom roms is this one

But I've done clean install via Sony PC Companion for 3 times now... So does this mean my phone isn't as fast as the day I bought it? Even though I've installed a clean ROM?

I remember reading somewhere years ago that flashing new firmware over and over will eventually wear out the hardware and cause it to slow down/eventually fail. I can't seem to find anything for this when searching though! Would it be possible for you to shed some light on what I should be searching for or what causes this issue?
Thanks in advance!

there is something called read/write cycle life
you can only write info so many times onto a disk before it wears out and stops working
formatting a partition takes a huge amount of cycles, installing roms does the same too because its alot of data that has to write
some info

Cheers for the reply! From what I read on the link, it says most flash memory have a P/E cycle of around 100,000 and from what I can remember, it varies depending on the type/quality of the flash memory used (Nexus 7 2012 had rubbish flash memory which a lot of people complained about). Just going off an assumption that the Z2 has a P/E cycle of 100,000, wouldn't it take quite a lot of ROM flashes before the memory deteriorates? Or is it more due to the size of the data being written/erased than the amount of times it is being done?
Sorry for the questions, I know this isn't the thread for it but it is interesting to me!

I used to flash a lot roms everyday on various devices. I didn't notice any side effects of it. As I know a little about hardware there is nothing to fear. You can imagine than one memory cell is one bit of data. If it withstands 100 000 writes it literally means that you can save data (eg. flash rom on it) 100 000 times. There is no way that you can cross this number even with everyday flashing. And it doesn't matter how much data we are writing because each memory cell deteriorates individually, so if we write on 1000 cells it means that every cell will deteriorate only by one write operation which means every cell will still be able to be written 99 999 times.
Another thing is that the storage memory in smartphones is usually one chip which means that all your data including /system partition (which you overwrite during rom flashing) and your photos and music on /data are on one physical device. The conclusion is that if you are afraid of rom flashing and wiping you should also be afraid of saving photos to internal memory. And since we are using our int. memory and change files placed on it a lot it means that we can flash roms as we please without consequences.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. I had my suspicions this would be the case and you've driven it home by explaining the whole music/data/pictures scenario. I used to flash PA and other roms on my N4 more often than I care to count but I never once saw a decrease in performance so it's good to know (personally and for others) the phone's read/write performance is not going to be realistically affected! :highfive:

I've flashed previous android devices ( HTC magic / Desire HD / SGS 3) 100+ times each with no obvious slow down, my albeit limited understanding was that NAND chips where rated for 100k+ P/E cycles?

Correct from the wiki link provided a few posts ago:
"Most commercially available flash products are guaranteed to withstand around 100,000 P/E cycles before the wear begins to deteriorate the integrity of the storage.[21] Micron Technology and Sun Microsystems announced an SLC NAND flash memory chip rated for 1,000,000 P/E cycles on 17 December 2008"
