[Q] SGS2 USB not detected (kind of) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, so today i decided to help my friend fix her SGS2, since it was suddenly going CRAZY after she switched to her spare battery! she has been using it for only..3-4 months with no problems until today AFAIK. she is a normal user, so no rooting nothing.
phone version 2.3.3, zskg2.
so basically the problems that happened were that:
1.) MTP App thing kept flashing for a while, so i tried to turn it off and reboot. after a few times the MTP thing stopped, but then another happened. after powering off, the phone would still turn back on immediately by itself.
2.) Dock screen (as if the phone was docked) kept appearing for no reason
3.) battery life draining like crazy
so i thought it was just a software problem , i could flash a few roms whatever and it would be ok.
we thoguht maybe it was the spare battery's fault, so i eventually changed back to the original Samsung battery when trying to fix. no luck.
so i plugged the phone into usb on my computer. no response WTF? ticked usb debugging tried just usb media storage mode etc neither computer nor phone did anything when usb attached! BUT, the phone is able to charge from electric wall socket. very strange.
HOWEVER, when i ran ODIN, it actually detected somehow?! So i decided to uninstall and reinstall kies, thinking maybe it would help. i think after reinstalling, i plugged the phone in and it did install drivers, or maybe i was confusing it with some other driver installation.. actually i might be confused since i had my own SGS2 with me as well.
so after googling and searching a bit for things like 'usb problems' etc, i thought maybe her usb port was just dirty. currently dont have access to alcohol to clean it a bit but actually out of maybe 50 times of plugging and unplugging the USB cable i got the phone to have a response twice?
Anyway, I managed to flash CF-root and then flashed Litening ROM on her phone. it still does not do anything when i plug in the USB cable.
any ideas people? phone is just charging from socket now. after flashing litening ROM i still had one instance where it randomly changed to the Dock screen. weird as hell.

Maybe its broke and needs a warranty repair. Do you really think you should have tried flashing, making the warranty void?
On a more helpful note I spent hours trying to make my sgs2 connect to my new laptop. It would charge but not connect.
I got it to work by using a USB port on the other side of the PC. Simple as that. Something to do worth more power on USB port that attaches directly to the motherboard.

From what I read, it surely looks like there is something wrong with the USB/USB port/USB cable to PC.
I don't know an exact answer to solve your problem, but I can only list possibilities to certain fixes.
- Use a different port on your computer
- Try a different computer
- Change USB to PC cable
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Wipe Cache Partition
- Wipe Battery Stats
If that doesn't work, you have to go back to your local provider, assuming either Smartone, 1O1O, 3 or PCCW and hope that they would fix it for you IF you didn't reset your counter back to 0. If you want to bring it back and it is under warranty, get a USB jig off eBay, plug it in to the phone, and the custom counter would reset so you can claim your full warranty. (just hope that your USB slot can even recognize the jig when inserted or you're screwed)

uh oh.. crap. she didn't get the phone through the networks but yeah.. guess I might have to usb jig it etc. thanks for advice guys.

again, thanks for the advice about this .
this morning i did manage to get the phone to at least register that it was charging when plugged in to the USB, although it would still not do the USB debug or media storage mode at all. Additionally, the 'dock' screen also appeared several times after unplugging the USB. really strange. also tried using another computer and USB ports as well, didn't make a difference either..
i even tried turning off the phone, taking out battery and cleaning the usb port with rubbing alcohol, and it temporarily solved the self booting problem but it came back again shortly.
would you have any experience with whether the samsung repair centres void warranty or not in HK? i am getting a USB JIG just in case though..

just wondering: would I be able to use qtadb program to access the phones sdcard you think? since odin could detect and flash, but not kies or the normal windows driver stuff.

sounds to me like the usb cable is not working
or your pc case is not giving enought power to be detected properly, try to plug it directly to the motherboard usb ports
i also believe making the warrnty void was not the smartest choice lol
cheers

Easiest way is to place a Micro SD card into the phone, backup all data from the internal SD card to the Micro SD card. Keep it simple
Titanium Backup is a great app for that since you're rooted.

You can connect QtADB with your phone via Wifi, so if USB does not work, since the USB does not really work.
Yes, QtADB works with External SD support
How to connect QtADB with Phone via Wifi
1) connect Your phone via usb, when it’s connected choose Connection->WiFi from menu and type phones IP and port (to change connection mode You need to connect QtADB with phone because its changing options in phone, not in QtADB. Next time You don’t have to connect usb before connecting via Wifi)
2) install on phone adbWireless and run. Press green button, it will show Your IP and port on phone screen. Type it to the QtADB and press connect.

It also breaks down storage info into system partition, data partition, internal and external SD cards etc.

hi again all, I didn't manage to get qtadb to work .but anyway, my friends phone started going crazy dockscreen mode again and turning on by itself. so i flashed stock rom and kernel back on friends's phone with odin, and then USB jig worked perfectly fine! thanks for responses and help guys!

New kinda Charging problem:((

everything was fine till now with the charger, lately i have this strange charging problem which goes like this..
previously when we connect the wall/usb charger charging used to start immediately but now it takes time..i need to wait for 45 seconds then the light appears..??
previosly it used to attain 100% charge quickly..but now its slogging??i mean very slow trust me...
responds late to the power n then slow charge??????????????
its the same even when i try with usb and the worst part is it doesn even detect usb connection but charge at slow rate??
any ideas?thanks in advance!!
right now im on cobratos 2.3.4 awesome miui rom!!
So you are using APP2SDcard? You are going to have problems mounting it to USB, if the SDCard is already being used.
For the 45 second thing....I donno....do you have any Task Manager app where you can make sure you don't have like 10+ apps running? Check that. Turn all apps off and then try.

Noo im not using app2sd..the phone gets charged but not able to mount when connected thru usb????

Can you unmount the SDCard under Settings->SDCard and Phone Storage?
If you can unmount it....do that....then plug the phone into a computer (using the original USB cable that came with the phone)
And try using different USB ports or a different computer.
It not charging for 45 seconds after you plug it in would make me want to reflash and start from scratch again. Not a good sign.
That is probably what I would suggest next.
Will try with a different computer and let you no...
apart from 45 seconds delay even the charging process has become very slow:-(
Tried even with different usb ports and computer..no luck
Phones usb socket has gone I guess

What about getting into xrecovery?
You could flash a different ROM with the baseband it matches.
Sent from my Atrix 4G with XDA Premium App
Yea could do that but still the problem persists
Have you tried changing the usb cable? I was convinced my usb port had gone, as it took ages to recognise the charger, and I often had to wiggle the cable where it was plugged into the phone to get it to start charging.
Then I left my cable at home and had to buy a cheap £1 blackberry charge cable from poundland to charge my phone at work - and all problems went away!
After checking the ends of both cables, it looks like the usb pins have become bent inside the small end of the usb cable (mini-usb end).
I'd doublecheck this before doing anything more drastic as it's a simple thing to overlook (well, I did!)
Yep tried with different cables too..i don't think its the problem of usb port too as there is a late recognition ..slow charging but no sd connection

[Q] SGS2 can't get along with my computer, desperate!

My SGS2 keeps disconnecting and reconnecting the usb with my computer. This is hapenning for quite a long time now.
I keep hearing the windows connect/disconnect usb sound when my phone is plugged in, making it unable to recognize the device.
Today, it finally didn't had this problem for a while, so I took my chance to get back to stock ROM (because I need to send my phone to Samsung for camera problems). So I flashed stock ROM with ODIN, but I encoutered a problem: it didn't get further than the boot animation.
When I tried to reflash, ODIN didn't recognize my phone anymore, just like before. When I plug in my SGS2 to my computer while on download mode, it just keeps reconecting the USB, so the device can't be installed.
Tried a different computer. It kept being connected, but that comp sucks and it couldn't recognize my phone at all. My own computer also has problems recognizing the SGS2, but also has the problem that it can't stay connected.
Things to know:
- Other usb devices do stay connected, it's just for my sgs2
- I've tried different USB hubs etc., reinstalling Kies, uninstalling drivers.
- It does keep charging the phone, even when the computer makes the disconnect sound. That makes it even weirder!
Basically I'm seriously out of clues how to revive my phone
I don't want to send it to Samsung, scared of losing warranty.
You guys are my last hope!
to start the ball rolling, YOU SHOULDNT BE connecting sgs2 to a HUB, thats probably the fault, second, have you tried a different usb lead or a different computer with the same lead to either verify if its the phone or lead at fault??
No one on here can answer your question because it sounds like a hardware issue, wire or hub or charger port, but it is an elimination process and only you can do that.
If you try everything and still get no joy, restore your pc to an earlier point, uninstall the samsung drivers and re-install them etc etc.
I very much doubt its a software problem tho, looking at what you tried already, lots of people use hubs, if youre flashing roms and your connected to a hub then ya play a dangerous game and risk soft bricking your phone, most of the time odin wont recognise your phone through a hub, same if ya usb lead is too long, itll charge but no data. always connect it directly to the pc usb 2 port.

Ow, I think I used the wrong word. I meant to say port instead of hub.. Translation fail there. So that's not the problem, I've put the cable directly into the USB port.
I think you are right about the hardware problem. I'm just not sure where the problem is. I only have one cable, so I can't test that atm. But like I said, the connection problem does NOT occur on another computer. It keeps the device connected (as an unknown device though).
So it's weird: it looks like a SGS2 hardware problem, but on the same time it has a different problem on a different computer. It's really confusing...
Thanks for the quick reply by the way

Then please explain me how I could ever do that when there is no working ROM on my phone. I'm stuck on the 'restore with Kies' screen, like I told in my post (yes, still). And how it will ever work with ODIN? It won't...
Now not any computer is connecting with my sgs2. It just doesn't show anything (not even unknown device). I'm going to try to buy a new cable. Is it needed to buy a Samsung cable? Because it's harder to find than just a regular usb to micro usb cable (and more expensive ). This is my last hope. When it's not working, I need to send it to Samsung.

You need to replace your usb board within your phone. New part can be found on ebay for around $10. It's a really simple task replacing it. No soldering or anything.
It's been well documented on these boards.

Good Luck!
EDIT: s**t, I forgot. You have to take care of your battery problem FIRST!!! You cannot do this under 40% and phone will not charge it! I did not have wall charger at the time, so I had to pull battery and splice a USB cable and tape wires to contacts on battery for like 4 hours!

don't use windows (or mac) haha. try linux. i bet it's just a windows error. so it sounds. did you try formatting the card?
yeah, i formatted both internal and external sd twice
Formatted both internal and external sd twice, no progress
Charging Cable
I have a cable that always charges my phone.
I took it apart to see what made it work.
Only two wires Red Pos. Black Neg. from the USB Plug.
The Red Pos. wire was connected to the Pos. and the White Neg.
data tab on the Micro USB side. Black Neg. to Neg.
This works to Charge Phone on the Computer, Wall Charge,
and USB adapter in the car.

[Q] Unable to connect to pc (no it's not a driver issue....)

Hi,
Having a problem since a few weeks with my s3.
Normally i could connect wiht my phone to any pc,, without any problems. Either it be unix, win, whatever...
Suddnely it stopped working, only thing that happens is charging when i connect it to my pc. Different cables tested, original one, etc..
Connecting it to different pc's resulted in a no go.. so it must be phone related.
No windows pop up, or anything!!
So I figured: Let's install a new rom.
Tried ultima 15 rom, got a different CM rom now (sentinel)... all to no avail.
Is it possible that this has something to do with my radio?
rom info:
android: 4.3
baseband: CEEMG2
Anyone have an idea what to do? Even ADB push ain't working..
See your identical post
I experienced the same problem when m using the Galaxy Nexus S But it was solved by using the app from play store named SD booster... In this app m just set the value of sd card to 1024 give root access and Boom my phone is connected as normal
If this not help then i seriously recommend you to replace the charging port of the mobile through samsung outlet
Go into developer settings, some ROMs may have different ways to get into develop er setting and after you get in make sure USB debugging is enable ^.^

Usb debugging is not required for phone to pc connection see basic faqs and guides .
But as OP has ruled out drivers and cable that only leaves the phone so its worth trying .
Usual replies are
Drivers
Cable
Dirty USB Ports
Not connected to main-board usb port .
I had same issue with my Galaxy SII and when i took it to service center they said mother board needs to be replaced.
So after that SII was good as new.
Got same problem here.
phone is charging over usb , but no data connection (tried different usb cables, different usb ports, different pc etc) but nothing..
also.. tried in download mode and so (after reading forums..) but without success.
then i decided to dissasemble that phone and look, what's inside that beast
cleaned usb port (inside, with contact cleaner), resoldered all pins and etc..
reassembled it back to one piece again and still, no data connection, but only charging
so, here i am, what to do next ? change the usb port on motherboard ?
(visually, everything looks right, good solder points and etc.)
Thanks, Martin

if anybody interested:
i've got it working again :victory:
basically, the problem was the hard way (crap usb data connections on motherboard)
soldered new ways for data+ and data-, and now it's back alive again...
(pictures of ways in attachment)
Martin
see you fixed it already but a note to others :
try using usb port right on the motherboard instead of the case front panel usb ports.....connecting to the front usb ports didn't work for me on some roms, but the rear one always connected so I just have a long cable running out of the back to connect my phone and it works on all roms I've used so far
Nice work hani93, i unfortunately do not dare to desolder and solder this stuff
I've noticed another thing though which is weird!!
When i tried to charge my phone via the power charger (the ac one?), when i check my battery view it still says that i'm charging via USB.
I don't think this is correct, i thought it should say AC or something and when charging via USB port on pc it should display USB?
I think this might be one of the issues that it's also not popping up on the computer.
Anyone know what is causing this or someone can confirm that when charging via power supply it should say something else then USB?
Just confirming your question when charging by PC it says (USB) and when its charging from the Mains it says (AC).
hmmm... guess it must be a hardware issue then?
Either usb port or mainboard... christ...
open it up and cleaned the contacts a bit of the usb port...
Still not functioning..

try to go into Download mode (volDown+Home+Power) and then connect usb, same situation?(eg, no data connection to pc ?)
if nothing again.. try to clean usb port inside (where you plug usb cable), sometimes there is dust and etc. then it stops working.
also, how did you clean contacts on motherboard ? i suggest to take soldering iron with clean bit, and drag iron along the pins.

DNA now won't connect to PC

So I was just going to change ROMs, and I realized that my DNA won't connect to a PC over USB anymore. I always plug it in at work via USB to a laptop to charge, and it would normally open the autostart/autorun window, which I would always notice because I'll switch computers often. Last week the autostart dialog stopped opening, but I was distracted with work being busy and it just went to the back of my mind.
Until now.
I've checked all the normal trivial stuff... trying different cables, using different USB ports, and obviously different PCs. It also won't be detected by ADB. Yes, developer options are enabled, yes USB debugging is enabled. It sounds to me like its the port on the phone, so then I'm screwed, but I was just wondering if anyone knows any tricks I can try.
Are you running a custom rom? Go to settings>storage>storage settings>USB computer connection and make sure the connect as Media device (MTP) is checked. Same thing happened to me and some how this setting was unchecked

Have you found a solution for this? I am in the exact same situation with no solutions working for me. I tried PDAnet and many other things. The device is unrecognized by my computer completely not even showing up in the device manager. This likely is a hardware issue, but I'm rooted with no way to return to stock because I can't connect to my computer which makes me unable to use my warranty for repair. This is a really unfortunate pickle as I'm not sure if I can even do anything at this point. I have found online that people with a hardware issue with connecting to their computers also had the slow charge notification when charging either through the computer or the power adapter. Mine does not display slow charge which gives me some hope that it is somehow a driver issue. Do you get the slow charge notification at all?
EDIT: It's a hardware issue for me. Noticed my charger is sticking slightly more out than usual, and it just can't get the right connection

Anyway, for me it just turned out to be that all the cables I tried were bad. Pretty low odds, I'm actually surprised both my cable at home and the one at work were all bad. Sure enough I tried it with a coworker's cable and it worked fine.
