So I'm trying to get Uruk to install on my 250g A70, and following the instructions posted, when i get to the point where you have to go into the recovery menu for the second time and select "Developer Edition" the UD splash comes up, but it hangs saying "Failed to mount rootfs /dev/sda2/" and then reboots. I havent been able to find any info about this error, and for the most part all I have found is info about the sd card version of the device. Is there a fix for this or am i just hosed?
Thanks guys
Hi, I get successful Uruk 1.6 on my A70 250gb, sometime get error same. I think u try again format your device with stock rom then install SDE and install Uruk 1.6 ( lastest firmware in now )
That is the order I did it in, actually, but I suppose it's worth another try...
Come on guys.
$auron is constantly asking for A70H guys to help him discover the best way for the tablet and no one will help.
How do you think will he be able to determine what to do, if YOU don't help him??

You are joking, right?
In the devthread $auron asked just 2 days ago for help of A70H owners.
Just read the end of that thread.
I am also having this problem. Steps I did probably all possible solutions:
1. Reset Android - stil the same
2. Uninstal and reinstal SDE - stil the same
3. Format device - stil the same
4. Uninstall SDE , Format device , upload stock firmware , install SDE , try to install Uruk - stil the same
I had urukdroid before and it was very good for usage. Hope someone knows and is going to share the solution of this problem.
Device: Archos 70 IT 8GB
I have an archos 70 250g hdd and have never had problem installin upgrading or downgrading my device, and hope i can help others. In regaurds to the incorrect power % it happens, look at the actual voltage left on battery max 100% batt is 4.198v i believe but most battery % come from empirical calculators that guesstimate based on useage, if hdd spins this % will drop faster than voltage does in anticipation, stop the program thats usin hdd and it will even out, might need a restart or a deletion of batterystats.bin. And SWAP/compcache works very well on hdd model but like it says it will only use the swaped memory when the ram reaches a certain limit then it will start to swap, i cheat this by starting up with alot of programs then clearing them with memory booster. It pushes background system apps to swaped mem and allows me to use only 35% of my limited 256ram leavin me with 65% open for whatever.. i have been able to run (somewhat choppy) vendetta online from my device doing this that requires 512 ram but will slowly load.. hope i was helpful

Make sure you've downloaded the proper files. You should download this: UrukDroid_1.6-Install.rar everything you need is there.

Now, using my Archos 70IT machine,
After bootup, I need to run z4root (temp root) to root the machine,
then, I open up the setcpu to check the CPU frequency profiles,
repeating the steps again and again for each boot up...
Heard that it is hard to root as the system files are protected using a squashfs compressed image (with encryption?)
Cannot touch the system files make me feel sad
- I want to modify the hosts file to bypass all the advertisements
- I want to remove not-used system apps
- I want to modify the init.rc (maybe lagfix?)
- I want to apply wifi ad-hoc fix
- bla bla bla....
So, I would like to ask for the progress of rooting? Any news? Anything I can help to speedup the investigation?
Many of plenty of thanks to all those rooting gurus ~~~ !
I also have same problem. Can anyone advise how to resolve. Many thanks.
I think, though I can very easily be wrong, the problem right now is gaining write access to the partitions, the main system partition is mounted Read Only.
I'm trying to find time to look at this but I don't think I'll be able to get any time untill the weekend.

Yeah, from following a bit of the action over at archosfans.com forums it seems the system is mounted as a read only SquashFS image.
As soon as I get my A101 I'll dig deeper into this problem. Hopefully we'll get a working solution

Yes, I've been holding my order for the Archos 70 to see if root would seem plausible and I just ordered it now. A section at XDA together with Archos release of the source should help us in search for enlightenment
Delivery in 2-4 days, final exam for some electronics course next week and then I've got 30 days off Uni to spend on this...hopefully
I have an A70IT 8 GB and have yet to successfully get z4root to work on it. I'm using the latest version (downloaded today).
I look forward to hearing how some people are successfully doing it, at least I get the impression on the fan site, they are doing it successfully. If anyone knows or has the time / desire to help a fellow Archos user out, please feel free to contact me.

I had the same problem with Z4Root not working. I found that powering off (complete power off, no suspending or rebooting) the device and starting it back up again did the trick. I also found that I have better success getting Z4Root to run if its the first program I run after a fresh power up. Don't run anything until you Z4Root.
Let me know if this works for you or not.
I've been having inconsistent results, but just stumbled across something that might help.
set airplane mode
turn off unknown sources
turn off usb debug
power off
power on
reset airplane mode off/on (doesn't look like it is really on on reboot)
turn on unknown sources
turn on usb debug
run z4root
wait.
seems to be working more consistently. I think these tablets don't save the state of things like unknown sources and usb debug (and airplane mode) very cleanly.
does this proxy app work with z4root ?

i really would like to use the wifi at my university with my archos.
I've been using it for some time. The only trick is that you need uncheck USB Debugging and recheck every time you run the z4Root app. Doesn't matter if its currently on, uncheck/re-check and you'll be good.

Shouldn't it be possible to write a simple app that does this automatically on each startup after launch?
Tasker probably can. I haven't installed it to test yet.

Hey there, Archos users.
There is an issue i have with my Archos 101 since I have upgraded to 2.3.20 (I have the same on 2.3.26) with internal memory and SD card.
Here is what I have:
After i boot the device, within some time (from 1 minute up to 30 minutes) the SD icon appears on the top saying "SD card safe to remove: You can safely remove SD card". When I am trying to access the file system from "Files" app - i can see no files even on my internal memory and a message: You can not use the internal storage while it's connected and mounted to the USB..
At the same time all files on internal memory and SD can be fully (RW) accessed via alternative file managers (ASTRO etc.).
As I have no posibility to downgrade to older firmware - I have installed Uruk 0.7. I was playing with it for about 30 minutes - no problems.
Did anyone faced the same issues? I am in Ukraine so have no local Archos support so dramaticaly need your help.
Just tried chulri's method of rooting - same problem.
As I understand, this method uses the installed firmware as a basis and puts root in it.

Will do now, but how come Uruk is working fine? Does it allocate some dedicated part of internal storage?
UPD: Well, it did not help. I did the disk check twice and got the same problem right after i boot up.
Anyone? Really need you help people.
Sounds like you are having the same exact problem I was having a few weeks ago and am having again now. The only solution I found that seems to work 100% is a full system wipe unfortunately. Meaning... wipe the entire Archos drive clean AND remove SDE as well as Android (if you happen to have Android), then reinstall Android first, then reinstall the 2.3.20 SDE as well, then reflash your 2.3.20 firmware again and rebooting after each step. Doing so solves the problem BUT I have no idea why it keeps happening to me still? In addition to having the same message as you... I then try to connect my A101IT to my laptop via the micro USB cable it reads "USB Operation Failed, There is a problem using your device's memory for USB storage. Only problem is that I never uninstalled or touched anything in the A101IT's system folders that I wasn't supposed to even though I have Chulri's Permanent Root Access via Firmware 2.3.20. So any help with the BOTH of these messages would be much appreciated too. By the way, like (gsmguru) I still have the problem when I go to my Recovery Menu and click on Check Disc.
I think i have the solution for this problem . Please try and post your results.
I suspect it has something related with latest fw's and wifi "Network share" .
When i deleted my home network and connected again BUT NOW checking the "disable network share" option the problem stopped for me the last 3 days.
Post your results so we can inform Archos about this bug.
You sir, are a genius!! Disabling Network Share in my personal Wifi Settings solved it in 2 seconds! Thanks!
.... Let's see how long Disabling Network Share lasts before the initial problem arises again...
Just got online. Let me check...
1. Staring up Archos
2. Problem with internal memory apperared immidiately.
3. Settings - WiFi - Forget...
4. Connect to.... Disabling Network Share
5. Reboot...
6. Where is that "Thank you" button?
It hellped. But... no more "The Big Bang Theory" from my NAS.
There is a bug in the new firmware. Just sent a custommer request via archos site from my account.
THANK YOU lagoskon.

I also had the same. Just did not mentioned.
Anyway - I am kind of happy it's not HW issue. Hope it'll be fixed.
When I try to reinstall the firmware it will not work. I get a message update failed: (1). This is done in the recovery section. I have put the latest firmware in, but nothing happens other then the error message. When I turn on the Archos it just goes straight to the Archos A70S Recovery screen. I have totally reformatted the device several times. Any thoughts on this board? Thanks.
Aaron
Try to format the device and then install the firmware, also, make sure to have the right firmware so the archos stock .aos file and not the SDE firmware .aos file
have you tried redownloading the archos firmware again? maybe the download got corrupted?
Also try running the repair tools under recovery: specifically Check Disk?
do you have a (1) at the end of the aos file? "sdqsqdfkqsdomij(1).aos" like Firefox do, i had the same error like that
Thanks...but I think I have tried it all...no luck
Try using a different browser, like IE to download it.
I've got the same thing going on. Was trying to re-partition the app space and something didn't work for the 4th time. So I removed Android and the SDE and now I can't get it to boot. My problem is that I was running windows, not sure what you were using, and I changed the recovery location's format. So every time I go to load the file the archos will format the partition then windows says it will not read and formats the partition... I move the file and try to start the reload only to fail.
I'm going to run ADB hopefully tomorrow. I hardly know what I'm doing, but don't really care if I break it! Just playing around but if anyone has any ideas let me know!
If you removed sde and android, there is nothing to boot from.
You then have to go into the recovery, format the device from there and then restore the orginal Android by transfering the aos file from arcos.
Yeah, I might have done that 10 times. That is when the archos reformats itself to something and then windows can't read the drive.
After you have transfered the AOS File to the device and it installs the Archos Android
it reformats the device to something?
I think that the archos is formatting to ext3 but windows can't read it, so windows then formats to whatever and I move the file, then hit ok on archos and you get failed message.
I know that AOS files work because I have already used them once.
If any of you guys give up on trying to get life into your bricked gen8 devices, then shoot me a message... I might be interested in buying the device from you.
Have you tried tried to fully charge it before installing? I had that same problem and it got fixed by fully charging the device first.
Full charge and plugged in as we speak.
You now have 133 posts on xda and still are not able to post a complete detailed description of what you are doing and what is happening?
How should we help?
My suggestion if you get an Error, tell us what error exactly, as my crystal ball is on repair atm.
Ha! 393 posts and your only kind of a ****? Thanks!
All kidding aside It's not easy to describe whats going on, and I wasn't trying to hijack this thread but I think the original poster is way gone. I was only trying to say I had the same problem and was going to try a few things to get it working again, but this was only yesterday and I have not had luck. I never really even asked for help but appreciate everyones input.
So... Let me start again!
Archos 101.
Long ago I had Urik Droid 1.0 installed but it had since been removed. Before I messed everything up i had the latest Archos update and rooted. I was trying to create a large partition for apps and had just edited the init.rc and rebooted. Somewhere here I messed up! Boot loops start and I'm into recovery.
Recovery shows everything normal, but I'm unable to update archos via AOS file. So I totally reformat and remove SDE in an attempt to just start fresh. This is not the case and I figured it wouldn't be.
As I described before, using windows, in archos recovery this is what is displayed.
Archos A101IT Recovery
Would you like to recover system?
NO
REBOOT
UPDATE FIRMWARE
REPAIR SYSTEM
FORMAT SYSTEM
If you select updated firmware the archos will reformat to ext3. It then says USB connection: Press OK to disconnect. Windows then says that it is unable to use the disk and asks to re-format. I did, because I don't think I can do anything else, moved the AOS file over and hit ok. Update failed (1).
So today I installed linux in an attempt to move ext3 to ext3. I did get the file transfered and my archos even said plug into dc power. I did and waited... Update Failed (206). Not sure what this one is!
And that's really all I know. I can't even get the last thing I described to come up again. But I have all week on vacation.
And lastly I would like to thank you for the help
And I just got the AOS to install! Formated repair to Vfat, used repair option and moved AOS into archos. For whatever reason this time it worked. Rebooted and android just started up. Don't know if everything works yet but we will see!
Funny, you do the mistake and call others names.

I was kidding. Take a deep breath, relax and please try to help someone else if that is what you are on here to do.
I'm pretty sure what you said to me was worst then my little joke. It was hardly clever and I'm ok with it as it did make me laugh a little.

I didn't need your help
You didn't help.
And I'm ok with it even if you are not.
I'm going fishing now. Good day everyone.
No, it was exactly what you needed, as before my message you didn't tell us what was happening on your side.
Please read what you have posted before and check yourself if you would be able to get any sence from that.
It is funny how some people handle kritik.
Below,I will list the steps I do to setup my webtop,I am using webtop2sd on a 32GB PNY Class 10 card, and used a 2GB Transcend (not sure on class,im sure its old) card to test with, same results with both pretty much,so I think something im doing is causing it to stop working.
What happends when it stops, is it just wont come up anymore. When I plug the phone into my lapdock, I either get a bluebox with an HDMI not found error (I'm assuming from the dock itself), or the red moto logo that just moves around. I would try resetting the phone, and reinstalling the executable through the webtop2sd app, and it still wont launch. This has happened about 5 times so far, I would get it setup how I would want it to be,then it stops working.
So here is what I would do (there is a phone reboot between each step pretty much)
1. Use my PC to partiton the SD card, ~22 GB FAT32 followed by an ~8GB ext3
2. Use webtop2sd to create the webtop, default settings, aside from the missing dock fix, which I only used 2-3 out of the 5 times I ran it
3. Once I am in the new webtop, I would install terminal and synaptic, then reboot.
4. Then I would run the webtop scripts, version 1.4, hitting yes to everything, then a reboot
5. I would check to see if synaptic is installed, the last time i did this, I had to use aptitude to install it.
6. Once I got synaptic up,I would use it to install the xfce4 package. Just about everytime I would go to install it,I would get an error on the "tzdata" package, the only way I could get past it,would be to uninstall tzdata, then most of the time, whatever I would go to install would reinstall it anyway. This does concern me, because when I remove tzdata, it appears to be tied to a critical package, which may be the source of my problem, but I am not sure.
7. Once I would get xfce4 installed,I would add xfdesktop and xfce-panel to the startup list (those may not be the exact package names, there is another thread I reference for that, can't remember atm, nor can I remember the exact name of that startup file, but its on this forum somewhere). I would also comment out the awmdock one and the webtop desktop one as well.
8. I would reboot, and it would actually boot up xfce4 just fine, the only gripe I have,is that I would usually get an error on the trash service needing thunar, when it is already installed. The one time,I was able to install open office, and test out some youtube videos.
9. At about this time, I would reboot my phone to see if it still works, then I would get the "bouncing moto logo of death" on my lapdock screen, and would have to start over.
One other unrelated note, about every other time I would reboot my phone, it would come up saying SIM card not installed, so I would reboot it again to fix the problem. So there were normally 2 reboots when a reboot is required.
So,I guess I would ask a few direct questions about my problem
1. Has anyone else had a problem with the tzdata package? Is there a way around it without uninstalling it?
2. Could the full xfce4 package be breaking the webtop? Do I only need certain packages out of it?
3. Even though I tested this on 2 different SD cards, could my problem be that the files are just getting corrupted on the card? Its pretty consistant though, I canpretty much say "Look,my awesome webtop is now setup how I want it to be, now watch me reboot my phone to see it not work anymore" everytime I go to set it up.
Info on my phone:
Stock firmware, unlocked bootloader, cwm installed (I thought I needed it,but not for webtop2sd) and rooted running latest webtop2sd. I havent messed with the stock webtop on the phone itself, i rather not since I like having it as a backup.
Btw, I am a bit of a linux n00b, I've pretty much just been reading what other people have been doing. Any help would be appreciated, thanx
You sure like to mod the webtop. Lol jk.
I have no issues and I have webtop with the Lapdock with the Ninja ROM. My phone is bootloader unlocked and rooted. I personally think you modded too much if that's possible. If I were you, I would start over and try webtop with stock firmware or a ROM with a fresh sd card. That way you can know if your phone has a hardware issue or if you modded too much. Hope this helps.

I can assure you that your phone is more modded than mine is, since im running stock firmware. What I'm doing is really not that much modding, I'm just trying to get a better interface running on the webtop, which people have posted saying they have the same one working on theirs. Its also not that I can't get it working, its really not hard, just time consuming, I just need to know why it keeps breaking on phone reboots...

Have you tried reflashing the phone yet with new firmwares or ROMS?
Sent from my Atrix XDA Premium App
why would I do that when the issue has something to do with the files on the SD card?
webtop2sd copies the webtop files from the phone, to the SD card,so the files on the phone are basically out of the equation at that point. So its not a problem with android, but with the other linux files from webtop on the SD card
Oh ok. Well have you tried an all new sd card yet?

I believe tzdata has been my problem for he past like 3 days I've been messing with this
It has been running great for the past day. XFCE4 is a large improvement over the standard webtop.
Of course, I ran into another snag, I need to access windows network shares, and Samba doesn't seem to be functioning, specifically, the samba-common package wont install correctly.
This user was able to fix it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19132707&postcount=19
But I have no idea how to fix the read/sym links. Can any linux gurus here explain how that is fixed? Thanx guys!

Yeah his post was kind of light on the details.
What it looks like is that when the /var/lib/dpkg/samba-common.postinst script is run by dpkg --configure -a it calls a program named ucf that in turn wants to run the symbolic link of "readlink" located in /usr/bin.
This is where i got stuck. I am by no means a linux guru.
I tried deleting the symlink to force ucf to use the "readlink" in the path, tried setting the symlink to point to the "readlink" located in /system/bin and in /system/xbin, and set the symlink to the busybox in /system/bin and to the custom busybox webtop2sd uses in /system/etc/webtop2sd but it did not help.
The output of dpkg changed slightly depending on which "readlink" ucf used but still the same error, "readlink: invalid option", and no samba-common.
Btw my busybox is 1.19.3
2.3.5 webtop on sdcard with fixed dependencies
A little help would be appreciated.
I was told on IRC that the actual problem is that the stock kernel does not include CIPs support, which is what is required for connectivity
but I still dont like the fact that samba package is still broken...
I'm using faux123's 0.2.3 kernel though, which might have CIPs support. Its hard to tell from the changelog and features listed in his kernel thread. Btw the 0.2.3 kernel fixes the broken top panel.

A quick question. Are there any other drives connected?
You could try actually install it onto your SSD from the boot up.. Your SSD would need 2 partitions though.. One is FAT32 (around 3GB large) and the other can be FAT32 or NTFS, it wont make a difference. If you want to know how to do the install from boot then just send a reply asking.
I have just tried with a different machine and I'm getting a full SELinux error. I doubt that there is anything that we would do.. (I'm not pro enough to go reading through the actual OS files... ) Not all PC's are supported unfortunately. Mine is not, I have had better luck running Remix OS in Virtual Box, well... before the latest release at least. Now I'm getting errors that seem to have been around since Android_x86 project began.
Another option would be to try the Legacy version if your motherboard is able to boot legacy. (Sorry, have not tried looking at your MoBo)
My advice (which I am also following) would be to be patient and just hold out for a while. Until the next update comes along for us to try.
More support is intended on being added with every release.
all my files is in a fat32 partitions and work on my laptop is just my pc ... wont works
Are there any other drives connected?
yes i have 4 drive with my pc
If it is working on your laptop then settle with that for now.
No, not other drives would be recommended, just saw them in the debug at the beginning.
The error that seems to be coming up for you and I (this is as far as I understand) has to do with kernel security settings as to what to allow on boot. The issue can arise when certain files have not been given the policy labels that they require to run. So they effectively get denied constantly. This is likely where a lot of the added hardware support will sort things out... I'm also running an NVidia Card.. could be the drivers needed..(although that would not explain why VM's don't work)
Sorry that I cannot help you mate.. This is going too deep into the realm that I know little about when it comes to the actual stuff. I follow instructions when having to make a change to my Linux distro.
I do envy you having the latest version working on a device. My laptop wont boot for me either.
You could try the Andriod_x86 forums and see what the common threads are. Seeing as Jide is using android_x86 as a base.
If anyone else knows more and is able to shed light on the matter, please do so? I am also up to correction on my statements.
I asked the same question on other forums and on google group

I know its not an answer to your question, but have you tried the new 2 February version? I have got it working in VirtualBox atm.
