[Q] What to do when changing ROMs - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I currently have the Exynos 7.2 (XXKI4) and I'm tried to change to the HyperAndroid Androidmeda ROM but I got in a bootloop. Should I go back to stock ROM then try to put the HyperAndroid?
There's another question that's been bugging me, what is all the KF2, KI4, KE2, etc? does it matter which one i use when going back to stock? is there a preferred one for Bell SGS2?
Thanks

Try XXKI3 get it from xda

I always use titanium backup for apps and data backup and after flashing rom I'll wipe data for better matching.

By this you mean that you wiped everything after flashing? Of course you will get a bootloop then. Your rom is wiped.
Flash the rom again and you are good to go.

backup everything using Titanium Backup, and then do a factory reset (from the phone's menu).
go into recovery and a complete wipe again (factory/data + cache + dalvik) and flash the rom you want.
if it doesn't work, revert back to a stock rom using Odin (I use KE7 since it has the old bootloader so I can get rid of the yellow triangle with a Jig).
use Odin to flash CF-Root's kernel. Then go into recovery, wipe everything and flash the rom of choice.
This procedure worked for me a couple of times.

thanks for all the help! Everything turned out great

[Q] How to flash from CM7 to unnamed, and others

Coming from captivate, i used to have to one-click back to stock before i could do anything. Do i have to do the same here when going from a AOSP rom to a i777 rom?
FYI whenever i flash I ALWAYS wipe data/cache/dalvik cache (and sometimes battery stats)
Also does any kernel for the i777 work on any rom?

I don't and haven't run into a single problem yet. It takes the long process out of it like we used to have to do on the captivate. uber nice
this phone has different system so you flash from cm7 to a samsung with no issues.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
As the above said it is not an issue like we had on the Cappy's. If you made a nandroid backup of any rom you were on (ie: stock rom) then just go to cwm, wipe data/factory reset, then install your nandroid backup. Much easier now. Samsung got smart and changed the partitions so CM7 doesn't have to use mtd partition any longer. So no problem switching back and forth.

This might seem like a dumb question, but I'm new to this (just flashed UnNamed yesterday). I'd like to try other ROMs too, so all I would need to do is download the .zip file for the ROM, put it on my sd root (like I did UnNamed), go to CWM, do a wipe data/factory reset, then proceed to install the new ROM the same way I installed UnNamed (from CWM)?
If that's correct, that sounds easy enough to switch back and forth.
Indeed. Just be sure to do a backup in cwm in case there are issues with the new rom.

Yes. It is that easy. Like above commented on go into cwm recovery, choose backup and restore, choose backup, then it will create a backup of EVERYTHING, your rom, settings, apps, and everything else. So if you don't like the new rom or have an issue with the new rom and want to go back it is as easy as going back to cwm, backup and restore, choose restore, then choose whatever backed up rom/date you want to restore. MAKE SURE TO WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET BEFORE RESTORING A NANDROID BACKUP.

Freezing on Me At All Times

Pretty much copy and paste, but I have updated it with latest info.
geokilla said:
So this is weird... In four days, the ROM or phone has froze on me about half a dozen times now. The first time when I was setting it up by as I had just done a flash of the ROM. While setting it up, the phone decided to suddenly slow down all of a sudden to a crawl, up to the point where everything started to get washed out and freeze on me. Force restart by holding Volume Up + Power was the only solution to fix it. Just now, my sister had it connected to her computer and was transferring music over into the internal SD when suddenly, the same thing happened. Again, only solution was to force restart. Anyone have this happen to them before? Everything is completely stock except that we're on Dorimanx 5.3 kernel. Then the other times, it would either slow down and freeze in the CWM Recovery Menu, or when she is texting, playing games, etc. There aren't that many apps installed at all. Reflash of kernel doesn't solve the problem.

Could it be that I need to flash the phone with official ICS + bootloader + PIT? I jumped straight from stock Gingerbread to custom ICS.

try doing a wipe data/factory reset as that is normally a fix to these kind of problems. Also clear cache and dalvik and that should fix the problem!

Do not use the .pit file unless you understand 100%sure about what you are doing. That's probably the easiest way to bork your device.
Edit: try flashing a different kernel. Try dark knight or fluxi. I think it would solve your issues

I would get an official rom, and flash it with odin, (no repartition is required) then install your fav. custom rom

I can't wipe data/factory reset in CWM for some reason when I first tried to install the custom ROM. Never tried again... I wonder if it's because my I9100 is brickable.
I have cleared cache and dalvik cache but no luck. It even slowed down and froze in CWM Recovery.

I know what I'm doing. Flashed with PIT many times before on my Captivate. Haven't tried PIT on her I9100 though. I haven't broken my phone with PIT yet, even though there's quite a few PITs out there lol.
I've read of others running the same combo as me, but they're fine so I wonder what else could cause this...

The ICS ROM from the Q&A Sticky should work right? Her I9100 is brickable so.... Gotta be careful.
Flash a stock rom, go to sammobile.com and find one then try again?

If I helped you press thanks!
format cache/data/system , then make all wipes , then put your phone in download mode , flash a stock ROM from samfirmware.com , then root your phone !
Running the latest Dorimanx 5.5 kernel and still getting the same problem. In fact, I noticed that if you set it to Performance under Kernel Tweaks in Recovery, the problem is more apparent. Setting it to default causes the issue too.

[Q] Help with Flashing roms

Hello, I am new to android customization/flashing roms, and last time I tried flashing a rom on my Galaxy Player 5.0 YP-G70, it worked, but when I tried going back, I realized I didn't have a backup of my old rom, so I went online and flashed a stock rom for my player, which ended up hard bricking the device.
I want to know everything I should do before flashing a rom so that I don't risk screwing up my player again. How do i back it up? How do I restore that backup? and most importantly, what other roms support this player (US Version of Galaxy Player, or YP-G70) specifically?
Also, is there anything else I should do before flashing a rom to ensure I don't brick my device and to also ensure I can get back to my old rom if needed?
If anyone can help, thanks.
Back up is done in cwm under the back up and restore section. Usually the op of the corresponding ROM has any specific information about the needs, typically it is backup
Wipe user information factory reset
Wipe dalvik cache
Install new ROM
Advanced section to restart recovery(optional)
Advanced restore in backup and restore section select restore data
I may have missed something so someone else will correct if I did

First, you have to find a ROM for the U.S (???) version of the 5.0
Since you hard bricked it, i guess you need to 1st flash the stock rom, after doing that, install CWM via Odin, backup stock rom, flash ICS (not much different from JB)

Well, when I hard bricked it, I took it back. It wouldn't even boot into recovery, it just showed a little weird symbol for a while (phone with an exclamation symbol, and a computer), but then the battery eventually died, and it wouldn't even turn back on.

[Q] Need help reverting back to pure stock

Hi guys, I've owned this tab (p4wifi) for a few years now and for sure loads of junk has been building up in it. I've used dozens of ROMs in the past and it seems to be slowing down. Now the slowness isn't the issue, I just want to revert it back to full, pure stock as in Unrooted stock ROM from sammobile with no user data whatsoever. Exactly like the first day I got the tab, no pics videos or anything that I took.
I live in Malaysia so I'll be using this: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=5982
So now the problem is how to exactly go about doing this? I'm currently running CM10.2 with CWM installed and I want all my user apps, photos and videos gone too, like everything. I understand that i have to boot in Download Mode and use ODIN to flash that ROM image, but hat are the steps before or after that I have to take to remove all my user data? Would really appreciate it if I could have a step by step procedure.
Thanks alot guys

well before flashing the KERNEL image....
it is not quite necessary to totally wipe the phone..
bt to ensure a clean install it can be done...
while.... since u want to return to pure stock.... it is better to first restore your first cwm backup which u made just after rooting.....
coz flashing a kernel wont remove the custom scripts bt only disable it.....
so wat i say is... first restore ur just-after-root cwm bakup.... after that flash your kernel which u will download from sammobile. com.
and then u will have a pure stock unrooted phone like in the beginning

Thanks both of you Woohoo fellow Malaysian on this legacy tab. Sweet thanks for the detailed procedure, I'm guessing step 5 is the one that wipes all photos and videos? Because normally 1-4 just wipes user apps. Will try it after having my stuff backed up How is the UI smoothness for you on this tab? Just wondering if I'm the only one who feels that mine is very sluggish.
actually, Toldo's stock rooted ICS rom and Omni Kitkat rom are both smooth.

Yup that's the one that wipes everything. Sometimes the tab feels sluggish, depending on what i use it for, like heavy multitasking and such, but overall its pretty smooth. BTW, I'm running SlimSaber 4.3 on my tab. I feel that 4.3 gives the best performance for our tab and 4.1(pershoot's cm10) is the most stable.

On stock ROM? I'd recommend A1 kernel or Yoda kernel. Yoda kernel is quite outdated and doesn't contain the l2_hsic wakelock fix if you have the 3g version, but its pretty good. A1 on the other hand, is a fan favourite. Both have performance governors and if I'm not mistaken also powersave governor, but honestly I've never tried trickster mod so I can't tell you that.

It's alright everything's working now Now another problem popped out I wiped my internal memory which means all my photos and everything non system related, and it did, my tab was practically empty buttt the tab doesn't register it as that ._. The storage part in settings shows that I have used up like 12GB of space even though I have wiped everything clean, I did an SD card folder analysis with ES file explorer and although it showed the same 12GB used, the folders shown do not add up to that, could it be the indexes are not updated? Because I don't see anything that could be eating up all that space

You're saying your phone reboots even when you're trying this from within Phil right? Not just the option from within the ROM....
If it doesn't get any better you may just want to use the No Wipe Odin file. Something could have gotten corrupt or something along the way.
Another thing to try maybe is flash the latest TWRP using Flashify and see if that let's you do it..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
ok just hitting factory reset inside of Philz will of course just reset your operating system that is on there, which will be Hyper 16. If doing a factory reset to install a new ROM within Philz it will wipe everything out of there including the backup TW (HD16) makes of itself. my understanding is TW makes a copy of itself on install so when it does factory reset it reverts back to that.

Exactly that, I hit Wipe/Factory Reset. It starts attempts to start the process, freezes then reboots back into the ROM. Ill probably just do the no wipe Odin file. Thanks
