[Q] Flashing with USB connector dead - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello everyone.
I'm quite more comfortable with my SG2, but I have to handle with an X10i, never updated. It has the first basis stock rom : X10i / 1.6 / 1.0.14 / 2.6.29-rel [email protected] #2 / R1FA014
I want to upgrade it to gingerbread 2.3.x. It's quite very easy as the official package is released. But... (there is always a but), the phone isn't anymore recognized by any computer, with any usb cables (even the official one, even on computers with xp or seven (on which the phone was previously seen)). and on the phone the USB logo will not anymore appears when connected to Pc. So I figured out that the connector for USB is broken. Just to say that the phone can be charged by this way...
So it's impossible to use SUES or FlashTools, etc... So I want to do it manually. As I've read, it's possible by doing this way :
a. rooting the phone
b. installing xrecovery on the phone
c. copying an update.zip with the ROM I want
d. flashing this update.zip with xrecovery
But it's impossible !
Let me explain you what I've done :
1. reset phone to factory default
2. x10root
3. root checker = ok
ok... so the phone is now rooted.
4. update busybox to version 1.15.3
5. impossible to update to upper version of busybox
6. impossible to install xrecovery 0.2 neither 0.3 (message saying it's impossible on this phone)
let's trying it manually...
7. extracting xrecovery 0.2, taking files in res folder (busybox, chargemon, xrecovery.tar) and copying it to system/bin
8. reboot >> impossible to get the xrecovery menu by tapping the back button
9. extracting xrecovery 0.3, taking files in res folder (busybox, chargemon, xrecovery.tar) and copying it to system/bin
10. reboot >> impossible to get the xrecovery menu by tapping the back button
11. extracting xRecovery-0.3_GBready.zip, taking files in res folder (charger, chargemon) and copying it to system/bin + xrecovery.tar and sh in system/xbin
12. reboot >> impossible to get the xrecovery menu by tapping the back button
so... now I'm lost !
Anyone can help me in this case ? Thanks in advance...

here's a link to sony's update utility:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup...eserviceapplication/xperiax10mini?cc=gb&lc=en
procedure:
1. download and extract to you descktop the newest GUI flashtool
2. in your phone go to settings ->applications-> and check unknown sources
3. in settings ->applications-> development-> check usb debugging
4. in you extract flashtool folder that should be on your desktop you will see a flash.bat file, open it to start program.
5. click on root and follow the procedure to start z4root and allow it to root and restart your phone, do not manually restart you phone, z4root will automatically restart your phone for you.
6. once your phone is completly restarted and functional, colse the flash.bat program and re-open it from the extracted program.
7. click on customise and allow it to fully install the applications, it will tell you finished when done.
8. mount your phone's sd card to your pc
9. download the root explorer.apk file from the download link provided and save it on you desktop.
10.copy the root explorer file from your desktop to the root of your sd card (do not put it in any folder)
11. unmount phone to computer
12. you will see on your phone that you have a program called astro, open the program,
13.in astro, navigate to your sd card and install root explorer.apk
14. once installed, exit out of astro
15. mount you phone again to your pc and create a new folder on the root of your sd card called new build, and create another folder called old build.
16. download the two build.prop files supplied in my download link and save it to your pc's desktop.
17. now open the build folder on your desktop and you will see two files, one called build.prop.claro and another called build.prop.vivo.
18.delete the build.prop.vivo file.
19. right click and rename the build.prop.claro file to build.prop (delete the .claro part)
20.drag and drop that file to you new build folder you created on your sd card.
21.unmount your phone from you pc.
22. on your phone, open root eplorer
23. scroll down to SYSTEM
24. find the build.prop file and copy it
25. back out of the SYSTEM folder and scroll down to the SD CARD
26. paste the copied build.prop file to the old build folder you had created on your sd card (its basically a backup in case you ever mess up)
27. now in root explorer, go to you SD CARD and copy the build.prop file from your new build folder that you initially downloaded and renamed.
28. scroll back to SYSTEM and click on the r/w button on the top left of screen
29. then past and overwrite the file
30.now exit out of the program and restart you phone.
31. don't worry if you phone menu system looks kinda wonky or doesn't really work properly once your phone has restarted. just make sure its fully rebooted
32.download and install the sony ericsson update service program from the download link supplied.
33. accept the terms and follow the instructions... (it will ask you to put your phone in recover mode by turning off your phone and pressing the back button while plugging in your phone via usb) you can make this process quicker by simply already having your phone plugged in and simply pressing and holding the top power button+back button+home button until the green light remains on.
34. the program will tell you that there is new software available for your phone
35. install and enjoy 2.5
Extras step to making the experience even better!
i personally don't like the boot animation of the new 2.1 update and would rather not have the claro operator logo at the boot startup. the way to do that is:
root your phone again by following my instructions earlier, and install the root explorer.apk file again from your sd card. once your have root explorer installed and working navigate to SYSTEM and then to MEDIA. in media you will see a bootanimation.zip file, simply delete it.
Now for removing bloatware (operator specific applications):
to remove application that may be of annoyance, just go into root explorer again and navigate to SYSTEM and the to APP and dele and .apk files that are programs like ei: claro.apk... make sure you press the r/w button whenever you want to delete or overwrite something in SYSTEM. And be aware that if you don't know what your doing, you can brick your phone. SO BE CAREFUL!
And finally, as most would already know, this is all at your own risk. Sometimes its better to leave these types of hacks alone if you don't know what your doing.
I take no responsibility or credit for any of these hacks. thanks to all the members on XDA Developers for your support and help.
There are steps to make it simpler ... which is independent of the version they have in the cell (2.1 Uk or other ... 1.6) is achieved by having the American firm ... thus reduce it without diminishing the tutorial: alex0983
1. Planet app install
2. Find and install z4root
3. Permamente root install and follow instructions, the phone will reboot ...
4. In Planet app also find the Root Explorer and install ...
5. Connect the phone and copy the build.pro (Claro) to the SD and disconnect
6. Open root explorer and if I get a message to: super user ... allow him ....
7. mounted R / W. ... go the SD route where the build.prop copy and recopy this time from root explorer and find the path: / system and replace the phone ....
8. Turn off the phone ....
9. Connecting to Seus and select repair ...! and ready ... your phone now is American again! And firmware 2.1
10. To remove things Claro, just make the points 1,2,3,4! then the path / system / media to copy the boot loader found in the forum and in the path / system / app to delete the applications they say. clear (remember to mounted R / W)
I hope you find it useful! And that worked for me! Obviously, thanks to your tutorial alex0983 which also served me as a whole, but I found the quickest way!
Sorry for my bad english!
re:
hey no problem, i'm glad you found it useful. Sorry for the 35+ steps... I just wanted to make it easy to follow for people who had never done something like this before. Just trying to help ppl.
Actually the tutorial is very well prepared but no longer so necessary to the root from the phone! And for that we are in the community to help and facilitate the process to other users!
Kudos for you alex0983 and kloriahdez, thanks for your posts!!!

Hi
I have 2.1 update 1 version
Should this procedure work with this or it won't work
If not, how to root the phone?
I mentioned that kingoldstyle had the same problem. I also updated the phone prior to doing this procedure.
So, maybe kingoldstyle can help me with rooting?
How to use flashing tools?
Thanks.
problems
im stuck ant no 28, whats a r/w button? and when i try to paste the build tells me: you cannot paste here because the file system is read-only. help me please

Agh! what am i doing wrong!??

Hi everyone.
I'm really sick of this phone (X10 mini pro). right now no matter what i try and flash to it using xrecovery and update.zip, i reboot and always find that i'm running the same old system - like as if i've done NOTHING TO IT AT ALL!
I tried flashing this (which is what i really wanted):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041099
Nothing, reboots into stock.
I then tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059361
Also no luck.
What am i doing wrong!? I download the rom, extract (System, META-INF and/or any other folder) and then i install any hotfixes by dragging and dropping/replacing files.
I then zip up the system and meta folders (plus anything else ie: Data folder) to update.zip, then install via xrecovery -- which does so fine, no warning messages -- then i CLEAR cache or format data (if instructed) and reboot.
As far as i can tell, i'm doing NOTHING wrong and it's extremely frustrating. Everytime i reboot i'm greeted with the same old setup wizard, same old theme, same stock "About Phone" details, as listed below:
Model Number:
U20i
Firmware Version:
2.1-update1
Baseband Version:
M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015
Kernal Version:
2.6.29
[email protected] #1
Build Number:
2.1.1.A.0.6
What is going on???
Have you tried not renaming the zip file and flash it as it is, then flash the hotfixes next?
Maybe what you added or replaced caused the flashing to not work at all. For me when I flash a big rom it'll take about a minute. If it was flashed and you don't even see it copying files then it must have failed.
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
Choose custom zip, navigate to the zip file location in your sd card and confirm flashing it. Must work. I bet you flashed the "update.zip" which doesn't exist.
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
Thanks for the quick reply guys.
Unfortunately i've tried both these methods and i still get the same problem. (I just tried both methods again to be sure) Xrecovery just states "Copying files..." then within about a minute or so, it tells me it's "Completed"
Just for the record, i did buy this phone used (and "unlocked" to any network) would that somehow have something to do with this?
I've also tried a factory reset using the PC companion from Sony (then installing a rom) even after that i still get this problem.
Frustrating, very frustrating.
Ok, so i did this all over again:
Step 1.
Reset phone using PC Companion
Step 2
Setup Wifi using the wizard
Step 3
enable usb debugging and Unknown Sources (both under Applications)
Step 4
Connect phone via usb, transfer over Xrecovery, update.zip, etc. Then UNMOUNT SDCARD.
Root phone using S1C, install busybox during then reboot.
Step 5:
Setup marketplace account & Download (provided i get past that rediculous "downloading.." hang bug):
Busybox Installer, once downloaded, double click icon and install
Download and install Root Explorer
Step 6:
install Xrecovery manually using Root Explorer, placing it's 3 files in \system\bin
step 7:
Connect usb, transfer over update.zip, reboot and enter xrecovery
Now, guess what? XRECOVERY won't even start when i hit the back button when the SE logo appears!
One problem after another, about to give up. Really not impressed.
Do the following at your own risk
> Before you start make sure you have
- Root access
- Busy box and terminal emulator (you can get this from the market) installed
1. Download this script http://www.mediafire.com/?yw2a3r2didpb51t
2. Extract the folder called AAIS and rename it to "aais" (without the quotations)
3. Copy the aais folder to sdcard
4. Open up terminal emulator and type in the following commands
Code:
su
Click on allow when superuser dialog pops up and then type
Code:
cd sdcard/aais
Code:
sh install.sh
A list will appear, type the number which installs xrecovery and press enter
Once the phone has rebooted
1. Copy the zip of the rom which you want to install straight to the sd card (Do not rename it, extract it or do anything to it)
2. Copy the zip of the hotfixes straight to the sd card (again do not rename, extract or do anything)
3. Reboot phone, when it reaches "Sony Ericsson" press back a few times to boot into xrecovery
4. Using xrecovery do this
- Wipe cache partition
- Advanced option > wipe dalvik cache and wipe battery stats
- Go back to xrecovery main menu and then click on factory reset (full wipe)
4. Then goto install custom zip > choose custom zip from sdcard > and then choose the rom zip. Let it install
5. Once rom is installed click on choose custom zip from sdcard > and then choose the hotfix zip.
6. Once installed go back to xrecovery main menu and reboot phone
Hopefully should work

Thanks for this post, exactly what i needed. Tis much appreciated.
I did what you said, word for word, and everything went smoothly. Xrecovery booted up fine and installed everything fine.
Unfortunately, this has failed to resolve the problem. I'm totally clueless as i'm sure most of you are. All i can say is it's not user error - i've not done anything wrong or missed a THING. I've really followed as you instructed word for word (as i did with previous attempts) and i still got nowhere. I've now spent all day trying to resolve this and still with no luck.
The only difference all of this ever seems to make is i'm constantly bothered by popups saying "X application has failed" etc etc now. It still just boots into the regular OS like as if nothing has happend.
Download this file, do not extract it, copy it straight to your sd card:

Go into xrecovery then
Wipe cache partition
Wipe dalvick cache
Wipe battery stats
Factory reset (full wipe)
Goto install custom zip from sd card and flash the first file
then flash the second file. Reboot phone. Hope it works.

[TUT] Install CWM Recovery and a Rom in x10 mini pro

PLEASE CORRECT ME IF ANYTHING IS WRONG
I do not take any responsibility if you break your device, ask sony to make them easier to update.
Suggestions about roms and kernels are welcome.
1- REQUIREMENTS
Check in Settings -> About phone
there should be
Baseband: M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015
Android: 2.1.1.A.0.6
- Check out if you are root with Root Checker
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&feature=related_apps
- If not, to root you can use this
[APP]SuperOneClick (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Before using it, in android start Settings from the app-menu. Tap Applications > Development > USB debugging. Accept warning-popup by tapping OK.
- Make backups of your things with some app like Titanium Backup or mybackup
- Install Busybox Installer from market and open it
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jrummy.busybox.installer&feature=search_result
- Install a root file manager (so you can see and modify system files) like
Root Explorer
- Check if your hardware keyboard language layout is supported
Hardware Keyboards | Sony Ericsson Keyboards
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982341
- if not, you will need to copy and send to that forum your language files
"I need to the following from you guys so we can make the hardware keyboard work:
your qwerty.kcm.bin and your qwerty.kl from your old Sony Ericsson Firmware (in /system/usr/) i need the entire folder with keyboard-config, keyboard-chars etc..
List your buttons and which button should have which character on blue/sym button and if you need capital letters as well which key should appear on blue/sym and shift button press
List you special signs, like underscore, plus, minus, etc .. even if you need a key frequently which is not on the default keyboard layout from sony we can still place it on a different button suitable for you
and last but not least any special requests, like numbers or so in the wrong place.
If you want to have an exact copy of your hardware keyboard as it is on your device (like the blue letters and number) please post a picture
As for many of you having troubles with "shift" key not working. Touch the text input window and hold you finger on it until a menu appears, choose android keyboard and NOT the HTC one I don't know why but "shift" key will work again"
2 Install a RECOVERY
[RECOVERY] ClockWorkMod Installer
Get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257701
Usage from a Windows computer:
You need to set your phone in Debugging Mode.
Connect your phone to your computer
Open up install.bat and follow the instructions inside that.
Usage from a Linux computer:
Requires your phone to be ROOTed but there is now a ROOTer for Linux that can ROOT your phone if not already done. Can be found in this forum.
You need to set your phone in Debugging Mode
Connect your phone to your computer
Open up terminal
Go to the directory it is extracted to
Start the installer by typing "sh cwm-x10minipro.sh"
3 USE CWM to make a backup of everything:
-Power off phone
-When booting your phone and when the 'Sony Ericsson' letters appear, press and release continuously the 'back' button.
Once you are in the CW recovery, use the volume keys to navigate upwards / downwards, the 'home' or camera button key to select, the 'back' key to go back.
- Make a backup of everything
- Reboot normally, connect the phone to the pc, and copy everything inside the sd card to the pc
4 WITH FULL BATTERY DELETE EVERYTHING AND INSTALL A NEW ROM USING CWM:
DO THE THINGS MARKED WITH *RED
When booting your phone and when the 'Sony Ericsson' letters appear, press and release continuously the 'back' button.
Once you are in the CW recovery, use the volume keys to navigate upwards / downwards, the 'home' or camera button key to select, the 'back' key to go back.

key Test
*partition SD Card
*Ext Size 512MB (formatting as ext4)
*Swap Size (Set this to 0)
*Rest Size is for vfat
fix permissions
validate recovery
restore recovery
*power off
- After you power off, take the microsd card and put it in a card reader, and connect it to your computer.
(Or you could connect the phone by usb and from CWM go to mounts and storage -> mount sdcard)
- Put inside the big FAT32 partition, the rom-u-want-to-install.zip, it must be CWM compatible
Here you can get some info about some of the latests roms:
http://xperiaminicyanogen.wordpress.com
- go to CWM and do install zip from sdcard
leave it finish and reboot after a bit
SOME OTHER USEFUL LINKS
- Once you finish installing a new rom, you can use this app in Window$ to set up your Hardware Keyboard to your preferred supported language:
[APP] Hardware Keyboard Language Setter KeyboardSwitcher.zip
program so you can switch your Phone's Hardware Keyboard with just two clicks on the PC.

Awesome and mostly right!
But there is one thing I don't understand: if you managed to install xrecovery and know how to use it, why do you need cwm??? Either install that rom with xrec, or with cwm.
Anyway it's really good!
I read somewhere that clockwork recovery was better and more complete, and that it seems the way to go. Is that right? I wish there was an easier way to instal it. In other phones you can instal it from rom manager app, maybe in the future they support this phone also.

i think you should make a video and post it up on youtube; i cant seem to find a in depth tutorial on how to do it (in english anyways). Id like to make sure the complete process before beginning because im afraid of what may happen (people referring it to bricking the phone)

Oh, yea? Well thx, now i realized xrec is even better than I thought! So I have no reason why to install cwm ( i never did )
So theres not any benefit of running cwm over xrec?
If anything is wrong please correct it.
It works perfect for my taste is better than Xrecovery.

Thanks, that is a problem that both conflict. Best way would be to use cwm only, but I could not find an easier method. I will update the instructions. Maybe installing rom manager app by slade darkness and co?. it is not finished, but it lets you instal cwm
Finally, there is a new app to instal the recovery you want with just a click, seek it on the dev thread

Just bought a SE X10 mini pro. Rooted via the one click app.
Want to install CM7
tried all the apps (Rom manager(appstore and here from the forums), d4 recovery installer)
The auto-install apps don't really seem to do anything.
The 'Install xrecovery' options don't actually install it. Clockwork installs the old version 3.0.0.8 if anything (from the market rom manager).
The rom manager app from xda downloads and seemingly installs clockworkrecovery mod / says so in the notifications, but doesn't seem like it really does. I can't boot into it by pressing the back button at the SE writing (before or during)
I did manage to install xrecovery-mini 0.11 via a root file manager and boot into it, but the options didn't match the FAQ for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117713, so I ended up screwing up and reflashing via SEUS.
Could someone please point out what I was doing wrong (or how to flash the CM7 image and then the hotfixes via xrecovery-mini), or maybe if there's really point and click app that works to do the xrecovery/cm mod parts without me screwing things up.
gaah... Installed clockwork recovery mod 3.2.0.0 but when I try to install the CM7 rom it tells me off saying Amend scripting is no longer supported/switch back to edify scripting etc.
What exactly should I do to install the rom ?
(oooh wait, it says to use xrec , fail )
but it is old, the new cwm is with apk install! C:
sure, much more easy now. I updated it, I will try to post the links to rom manager and recovery installer apps
cwm recovery vs xrecovery
I tried installing xrecovery. I should say I succeeded in installing xrecovery, it installed, and worked fine except no bootscreen when I turn the phone on. All 3 green checks showed up, but nothing happens.
Phone is rooted
busybox installed via busybox installer which shows the phone is rooted and the version of busybox.
All files (changemon, busybox and the tar files) in /system/bin with permissions set to rwxrwxrwx.
Am trying to figure out how to instal cmw recovery instead of xrecovery... not much luck so far.
Advice appreciated!
Hello, 1st post criticize me! LOL
I'm trying to figure out the same...
I'm totally new here and I'm trying to install the CWM Recovery.
it says: "Download and instal the recovery installer apk by darknessys"
when I look the installer it is not compatible with stock roms.
which method should I use to install the CWM recovery?
Ummm download this http://www.4shared.com/file/KQf9bym2/AAIS.html
Extract aais.zip to /sdcard
goto terminal emulator and give following commands
su
cd /sdcard/aais
sh install.sh
Click to collapse
choose ur option and enter the number of the option
only for mini pro as of now!
So recovery installer apk by darknessys or rom manager apk, both can not be used on stock eclair rom? can anyone confirm this?
Edit- it seems that those apps don't support stock rom, that is weird, I thought they would work, try at least with darknessys recovery installer.
if not, the easiest way for now I guess would be to install xrecovery and then cwm.
So if someone knows how to easily install cwm on stock rom, please advise.
I don't know if what galvic suggests works or what it does, but you can take a look to the script.
Getting crazy
I tried now several things from here and Google to get this CWM recovery to work... no success!! Got a new x10 mini with latest SE Update...
Please does anybody know a working way to get this thing to work???
Frustrating

xrecovery problem with the X10 mini

after installing the Rom I ****ed something and now my phone displays, and not to go neshte new rum nor rekovarito place, and I write this -------- xrecovery can't open / tmp / recovery.log
and now the phone is not usable, people help you have a chance to fix
pls help
Not a big problem to be honest.
Can you turn your X10 Mini on\off? (Since you need to turn it off for using the official updatetool.)
If you do, just download the Sony Ericsson Update Service for the X10 Mini.
You can find it on SE's official site under downloads.
Then just update your cellphone's FW to 2.1 again.
If you cant turn it off, you can let it drain and then do it.
OR you can remove the back cover on the phone, then remove the rubber cover over the powercord, then remove the powercord gently with a little pin to turn off the phone.
Then plug it in again and do the update-progress.
Hope it helped you in any way.
I have myself done this many times due to failed CFW install.
Edit:
As for installing xrecovery..
That isnt hard either to be quite honest.
First you root your phone and reboot it.
Install Root Explorer from the Market after root + reboot.
Get the xrecovery files over to the memorycard.
Use Dropbox if you cant use the memorycard on your computer.
Then open Root Explorer and go to the system folder and click "Mount R/W",
find the three files (xrecovery files) on your memorycard and move it to the
correct location (system/bin ? .. make sure you read up on where it is. it says where in the xrecovery thread here on xda-developers, because Im not 100% sure its in the bin folder.)
Reboot and you should have xrecovery when you boot and spam the "back" button!
Once upon a time you had to CHMOD the three files after you moved them to the correct folder (to 755), but the last time I checked xrecovery I didnt have to.
Just make sure you read the walkthrough on the official xrecovery thread. It all is there.

first of all thanks for answering my question...
but i need some guidance to install xrecovery properly
Go to x10 mini pro development section...there's a stickie about it...if that doesn't work den I have another solution which workd fr me in the same case u suffered
Unroot ur phone via superoneclick den do a factory reset (I know its painful so tryna keep a backup of ur apps with titanium backup before unrooting). Then after factory reset, root ur phone again and get a busybox installer from market and this time don't use xrecovery installer. Try to copy the chargemon, busybox and xrecovery.tar file to system/bin
P.s: download xRecovery-mini-0.1-beta.tar.bz2 from development forum to get busybox, chargemon and xrecovery.tar
Use root explorer to copy paste them...don't forget to give this files full permission
Sent from my U20i using XDA Premium App
aaahhh just go and check AIO automatic installation script, its in mini pro development thread, it installs xRecovery if u want cwm then use my modded script!

after spend about 6 hour i finnaly found how it works , see my next reply in page 2 and you will find the instruction
xrecovery works works for x10 mini , testes !!
i couldnt wait until night , really wanna share this point that couldnt find it on guidence sites im really toxicated and it doesnt mean that i wanna show off my dicovery
instruction :
1 download the attached rar file , pass is : "afra"
2 unistall all xrecovery u installed before .
use root explorer and delete previous xrecovery.tar and other 2 file (busy box and chargemon) from sdcard & system\bin directory .
3 now u clear ! go to market or find busybox aplication (better install it from merket )
3.1 -when it ask which version u want to install choose th last one 1.8...
3.2 -and when it aks where do u wanna install , choose system\bin
3.3 -done installation
4 . extract the "xrecovery tested work for x10 mini.rar" , copy three files into
your phone sdcard directory(means defualt directory open when u plugged you phone to pc) and unplugged the phone
5 . (this is the elegant point ) use a root explorer and first 'cut' the
xrecovery.tar into system\bin
then try to change permission(due to instruction u know) and you will have no error ! change is done
6 now copy xrecovery.tar (permission changed file) from system\bin into sdcard
folder and copy two other "busybox" "chargemon" into system\bin
7 restart your phone and press repeatedly back buttom several time and heavens door will open
