when I plug my usb cord into my tab it pops up with MTP initialisation and my computer doesnt recognise the the tablet. also, it doesnt look like its charging either. the battery icon has a red x in it. ive tried different cables and have rebooted once.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do from here to get this thing rocking again?
thanks in advance for any help thrown my way!!!
EDIT: found my problem atleast for the red x...I assume I wasnt getting enough power off of my wall charger. Went back to the charger that my tab came with and it is a ok now. The MTP thing still has me puzzled. It seems to be fine now so I will be a happy camper!
Thanks XDA brothers and sisters!

dubugging is off...it seems to have quit showing intialising but the battery icon still has a red x in it and it doesnt seem to be charging. when I press the usb icon on the tablet it pops up saying usb connected and right under that it says MTP connected.
this battery thing is really starting to worry me...
thanks for all help I can get with this...
Your Tab is working completely and utterly normally!
MTP is the way Honeycomb works with USB-to-PC connections due to the way the storage system works in Honeycomb.
The simplest explanation (note the length!) is that instead of having "internal" storage and "external" storage (SD card), Honeycomb merges the two together so that you have one large unified storage system meaning that you have ALL of the available space for applications rather than, say, 1GB for apps but 32GB for media as an example.
MTP is the way to get round the fact that if you mount the storage as "Mass Storage" like with Gingerbread and below phones, then Honeycomb MUST un-mount the storage from the android operating system, which as you should hopefully expect, will cause ANY app reliant on this storage to crash or worse.
I appologise if you already knew all that and I misunderstood your question, but lots of people have asked the same question and I'm not convinced you even searched before asking, but I'm nice so offer explanations rather than "JFGI"
Right, that's MTP out of the way, now for the red cross:
This one is a lot simpler: the Tab requires a lot more current than a USB connector is really meant for (5A compared to ~2A) and this can overload some USB hubs. To prevent this happening, the Tab disables charging over USB from a computer (this is what the red cross means). The wall-socket that comes in the box has some circuitry that says "oh hi Mr. Tab, here's your full charge current"
There is a way round the charge-over-USB using Pershoot's kernel, I suggest you search the Android Development section for "charge over USB"

The wall charger that comes with the tablet delivers 2A. Standardized USB offers 0.5A. Most of the standard USB plugs will deliver 1A but that is "outside" of the specification. Charging the tablet with 0.5A will take around 4 times longer than with 2A, meaning a full charge would take about 15 to 20 hours. So for most people that would be useless. Although I too would be grateful for the option at least, just in case I forget my samsung charger when on vacation.

Follow this guide to enable USB charging to remove that red X
As for why its not recognizing, try installing the samsung drivers.

Plugged my usb cord into my computer and it says to be plug into ac adapter cause usb is not sufficient enough to charge. It shows that it's charging but when I lock the screen and didn't even touch it with usb connected to the computer my battery just dies and its set to charge only.
Sound like your computer's USB port is screwed up and is not outputting enough current to charge the device.
If you have a powered USB hub handy, plug it into that, or try another USB port on your computer.
I'll see if that works just weird though since I was using the same port for my previous 3 phones and they would charge pretty fast but not this time.
whats odd is my gf just texted me and said that her cable isnt charging her phone at all. i'm going to have to go pick up her charger and stuff and test/return it.
Prob , you don't have the driver's installed .
My battery reading is really inconsistent was charger on a outlet said 28% rebooted then said 78% rebooted a couple of mins later and now it says 60%

This particular phone may need the entire 500mA of current that USB ports are supposed to capable of supplying. The error on the computer may be because when the phone connects, and tells the computer that it wants 500mA of current, one of three things happens:
1.) The computer says no and throws an error.
2.) The computer said yes, but when the phone actually tries to draw the current, the hardware of the computer can't provide it.
3.) The Amaze doesn't ask if it's okay to draw 500mA (to which the PC may respond no), and just starts drawing the current, causing a hardware fault on the computer.
Your previous phones may not have required as much current, therefore not causing any issues.
I don't know this for sure, but I've done some programming with USB drivers and I know that "handshake" when a device plugs in, does happen.
Happened to me to. Same thing with the notice to use wall charger. Dumb. All my other phones work with PC. Just not this one.
Just had this happen, except...
* I didn't get the "you should plug into a wall" message
* Using the USB of the computer seemed to *suck* power from the phone; anti-charging, if you will.
I've got a wallcharger on it now. Maybe tomorrow I'll try my USB3 port for it...
The USB3 didn't help...
what drivers do I need to install? My G2 charged just fine on this computer.
What I have going on now is an older USB "y" cable for an external hard drive; one side of the "y" is data + power, the other is just power. I've got the "just power" side of the "Y" plugged into a wall jack...charges fine now.

Guys, i found the solution, by trial and error...
forget about USB 3.0, drivers, micro/mini USb, app tweaks, AC usb charger etc.... You know what turned out to be the culprit ??
THE CABLE !
I realized that this charging issue happened only when using the aftermarket cable i bought from ebay, as an extra one to have on hand. While the backup cable was also OEM. (i could tell from the corn-plastic bag it came in...)
And all along it has worked fine for data transfer, sync etc, and also when charging it does in fact say it's charging... - only thing in actual it's draining.
So i downloaded the 'battery monitor widget' and kept a close eye on the mA number as i tried out different combinations of cables, stock and aftermarket along with stock and aftermarket AC chargers i had and all USB ports on my laptop.
With the cable from ebay mA was rather in negative using with all power sources, including USB.
With the stock cable from the box, it was a steady +200 to +350 on USB power, +400 to +700 on AC power.
Now the after market cable is also OEM, but it appears to be for another HTC phone, that the HTC Amaze 4G doesn't accept.
Also if your AC charger is model TC E250 it's only gonna show up as USB and not AC in battery status.
You need AC charger model TC U250 for the HTC Amaze 4G to be fired up.
There! That was what was wrong.
Hope this helps.
For some reason my touchpad no longer will go into USB Mode when I plug in the cable so I can not put the new alpha version onto my TP. Strange thing is the cable (which I just bought) charges it via USB, so I know it's not a connection problem. This symptom is the same for CM and WebOS, except in WeOS it gives the "may not charge" message.
Any way to manual mount the touchpad to transfer files onto it?
On a side note I did a little research and read on WebOS Nation Forums of a few people having this problem in landscape mode, but worked find in portrait mode, but mine sees no difference.
Like many people, you are having a USB power issue. Some cables just will NOT work for your Touchpad. I have only found one cable, other than the original that came with it, that has worked.
Also, if your USB port isn't putting out enough juice, or you have it plugged into a hub instead of an actual singular port, you'll run into problems.
PLus, sometimes a reboot of the computer can clear some of that up.

Thanks for the quick response. Appreciate the tutorials as well. I've heard of the power issues you've talked of but in the brief reading I did all those issues would not charge, or at least not show on the touchpad that it was charging. My Touchpad shows that it is charging, at least in CM it does....

I have one cable that will charge the Touchpad, but will not allow it to connect. It really sucks how much juice these things pull when they are talking to your computer via USB. Hell, I have to unplug my webcam before connecting my Touchpad to my laptop. Do you know how frustrating it is to be making a video, and then realizing that you have to stop recording to plug in your device? I scream about it every time. I also had to eliminate my USB hub. I always use the provided USB cable for anything Touchpad related. I have a car charger that barely trickles 2% over a period of an hour. I did notice that different computers give different results as well. My work computer (which is waaaayyyy better than my home one) handles the Touchpad like a champ. My Home Theater PC does pretty good with it after a reboot, but my laptop struggles EVERY time.

very strange. go figure...my original cable from the get go never made a solid connection i'd have to place the cable in a certain way to get it to stick, now that cable doesn't work at all. I found one around the house, worked totally fine on all aspects, lost it, bout a new one and it only charges. ugh...
tbtransfer w/ tbaccess works pretty good

The Tablet uses a microUSB 2.0 connection, all the specifications are listed here:
https://www.gsmarena.com/hp_touchpad-3839.php
Any microUSB 2.0 cable that provides data and charging will work, some from amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-Micro-Charging-Braided-3-Pack/dp/B01JPDTZXK/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=micro+usb+2.0+data+cable&qid=1603461974&s=electronics&sr=1-3
It can easily be tested with any cable from an Android device that has a microUSB 2.0 connection.
I noticed that I can not seem to turn the phone on while it is charging. I usually need to pull the usb plug out of the phone, push the power button to turn it on and then plug the usb back in for charging. Is this by design? If so, not quite sure why...
My other android phones never had this issue.
Also, please correct me if am wrong on this one as well. The USB port for Amaze is a standard micro USB. But for some reason usb side (male) of the charger that comes with the phone has a slightly different shape than regular micro USB plugs - so I can not use the same charger with my other devices that have micro USB (e.g. Sony reader, other phones). Yet a standard/traditional micro USB cables can be easily plugged in the Amaze. Again not sure why HTC decided to go with such design.
It almost feels that maybe I am missing on some "bigger picture" that gives a perfect logical explanation to these two observations...

I'm pretty sure the connector is an HDMI connector so you can connect it to a TV etc. But for why it won't start unless you unplug it beats me...maybe you're just not holding it long enough?
Thanks for clarifying about the port being also an HDMI. I totally missed it. Quite frankly, I did not even realise that micro HDMI and micro USB ports could be combined like that in one. This totally explains my second observation.
As far as not turning on while charging, I tried it many times including holding the power button for a few seconds but it does not come on unless I unplug. Normally when you turn it on there is a slight delay between the press and white "HTC" screen coming on. So maybe I am not waiting long enough and press again and it resets the "power on" command. Not sure...
Anyway, thanks for the info.
Mine turns on when I plug it in from an off state. I confirmed it last night right after my battery died.
Also the USB port is a 12pin. You will need a mHL adaptor to get the HDMI capabilities to work. You can check the Accessories Section.
You should look at your phone while its charging, it goes into recovery to charge but the backlight and colors stay off you can only see the text if your in direct sunlight that's why when you push the power button your basically pressing reboot system now (1st option) in clock work mod so in order to not get that while trying to turn it on while its charging well you have to take out the plug and the click the 1st option

Ah ha! That is great info. I will check it out. Thanks for everybody replies.
Also, I believe some ROMs have issues with turning on while charging. I forget which ones or if I am thinking of something totally different.
I just noticed the same thing the last couple times my phone died, just figured it had something to do with the ROM or recovery.

Hi all,
My Rezound is having an issue where, no matter the cable or charger, it only says "USB" charging. And on my AC plug it's even giving me the "Charge Only / PC / HTC Sync" menu option as if it thinks there is a data connection on the other end.
This isn't the first time it's happened, but it's the first time out of warranty. USB charging is unbearably slow and doesn't keep up with even basic usage, so I really need to get this fixed or get a new phone (at retail, keeping my VZW unlimited LTE).
Any advice would be welcome. I have a Rezound w/ a damaged screen that I could try to pull a part from if that helps, but I'm not sure if it's just the USB port or something in additional circuitry that I can't access.
For additional information, when it's unplugged it still has the USB charge/pc option.
So when you plug into an outlet it only gives you the usb charging/pc options and doesn't automatically charge from the wall power?
The USB plug in the phone is probably bad, it can't detect an A/C charger is connected so it defaults to USB charging.
You have basically 3 choices here...
1. Get a new phone
2. Get your phone repaired, or fix it yourself. This is NOT easy to do in the Rez as micro soldering is required.
3. Try a kernel with USB Fast Charging and enable it.
This is assuming you have truly tried other cables, chargers, and factory reset.

No, it charges but at 500mA, even on wall power. Sometimes it asks if I want to mount my data, but that seems not to happen often.

Thanks for confirming that #2 is not really an option. Regarding #3, a few questions
1) How do I know if a kernel has "USB Fast charging"? Can you help identify a kernel that has this but retains the 'global' mode capability?
2) If I enable fast charging, does it mean I risk damaging a PC if I plug it into a real USB port that only wants to put out 500mA?

Yeah, nevermind... After doing a little more research into this, I determined this will NOT really do what I thought it would... It could still work, but you would have to modify the kernel settings to allow a high current (800ma-975ma) charge when connected to USB, which would be fine when connected to an A/C charger, but could be very harmful if connected to an actual USB port on a PC. Super Charge and Funky Kernel (both are in the Dev areas here) have this ability, but you make the modifications at the terminal prompt on a rooted phone, not directly in the kernel settings. Essentially you are going to tell the phone to ignore USB standards and charge at 975ma when connected to what it thinks is USB. But like I said, this could be very harmful if it is connected to a "normal" USB port and not an A/C adapter.
Super Charge Kernel (some good into too): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902008
Funky Kernel (Sense): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911297
S-OFF is not required (although it is recommended), but you would need to flash the kernel by booting TWRP via fastboot, NOT flashing and starting from the phone. And the kernel has little to do with the Global mode capabilities of the device, it should be irrelevant as long as the kernel is fairly up to date.
Honestly though, for the price of GSM phones now, I would just ditch the Rez and get something else... I mean you can get a phone for under $30 if you really NEED one (Lumia 520), and a nice Android device for around $100-$150 that will not only give you a new device, but one with tremendously better reception and battery life.
IMPORTANT: Especially with HTC devices, there are THREE different types of kernels for the device, AOSP, CM/CAF, or Sense... You must use the correct one for your ROM or you can soft-brick your phone. For a stock phone, a Sense kernel is required, for other ROMs you will have to look at the ROM's OP and see if it is CM/CAF-based or AOSP-based, and use the appropriate kernel.

Hello XDA beasts and XDA leechers!!
Today I am breaking my leecher's bounds by writing my first unique How-To for Nexus 6P (might work on every device with OTG support and Marshmallow).
This guide is done using USB 2.0 hub and wall charger and a USB 3.0 Type-C adapter I already had.
If you are a electricity engineer please pay attention and help me moving this glitch to the next level!
I am not responsible if you burn your smartphone or home, we're talking about low electricity through I do not think there's a danger.
Okay, things you'll need:
x1 Scissors to cut wires
x1 Electrical tape to insulate the wires you connect
x1 Lighter to remove the plastic from the wires
x1 OTG Cable (Type-C to female USB)
x1 simple USB 2.0 Hub
With simple I mean the following: it just worked with my Chinese cheap non-wall-powered one, I do not know more information how

x1 USB male cable
Will be needed for its +/- wires (If you have a charger you are not using, or a USB mouse, take your s)

x1 USB 2.0 keyboard or mouse for test
x1 USB Wall Charger with high Amber output
2A will be cool I guess but not sure yet, I am using it with 0.6A wall charger at the moment and I am getting 0.1A on the phone (I can see it using an application named "Ampere", used for things like this, battery related) because a keyboard and a mouse are getting the rest (0.5A i guess)!

Here is the guide, if it is unclear what to do, I also give to you a screenshot of the final thing/hack:
(When I am saying connect the wires, I also mean tape the wires, so if you follow step by step the guide, use tape right when you connect)
Start of HowTo
1.1. Cut the "connect-to-otg" USB cable from the hub, you are about to reconnect it so keep that in mind.
1.2. Cut the USB cable and keep the USB male with its wires, we will use ONLY the black and the red (+/-) wires and this cable is going to charge our phone and power the whole hub.
1.3. Revert the step you've done at step 1 by connecting back the wires and also connect on red and black wires the red and black of the USB male cable of step 1.2.
(Almost ready, you now have a "complicated" cable that have 3 endings 2 of them are USB 2.0 and the other one is connected to the USB Hub)
1.4. Connect the black wire to the one side of the ON/OFF switch and the red wire to the other.
End of HowTo
You are ready, here's a example of how to make it work:
2.1. Connect USB of step 1.2. to the wall charger
2.2. Connect the other USB to the phone through OTG cable
2.3. Power ON the ON/OFF switch and turn it OFF
Glitch is done !!!
2.4. Connect a USB Device on the HUB, it should work, if not move to the next step
2.5. Repeat the step 2.3. once.
Keep in mind that your USB Hub still works without plugging it to the wall charger, but if you also want charging you are going to connect to the charger the USB obliviously, and ON-OFF that tricky switch we added.
If you know more about electricity, let us please know if this is safe for our phone, I think the only downside is the overusage of phone's battery, but let us know, is this hack dangerous for the hardware?
Have a nice day,
George.
Here is what you are about to create, a wall charger powered HUB with a switcher that 'touches'/connects the +/-, sounds dangerous right?
It works through!
Does sound a little dangerous, wouldn't it be less so using electrical tape instead?

True hahah, let me edit the topic, that is a must, I also used it but forgot to mention it.
(I am currently using my Nexus 6P as a computer with this mod (mouse, keyboard and "usb soundcard") and the help of a chromecast, battery is still going down even through it is charging, using a USB 2.0 port of my rooter, the metter of Ampere shows 1750mAh (1.75A) ... Searching for a way to set phone's brightness to 0, absolutely zero, to get the advantage of the amoled screen while still keeping the touchscreen).
Have a nice day!
EDIT:
Here is some information for electricians, using the demonstration of this guide, you can also see the first post on this topic for a screenshot.
1. My wall charger: 600mAh, 5V
2. My Nexus 6P gets about 150-200mAh charging power, according to Ampere application for Android.
3. As I can see/guess the USB devices are getting powered by both smartphone and charger, not sure through because of limited knowledge about electricity and simple circuits.
4. This trick is glitching the Android by making it using MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) while charging, so it happens to reveal that it is POSSIBLE to charge and be in host mode, I am not sure through if it is a placebo and in reality the phone is actually charging only when no key is pressed of keyboard or mouse and MTP goes to standby mode, not sure if what I just said exists in MTP.

Worth the bump,
I found a way to tweak the creation of this guide, clearly SPLITTING the charging of the phone and the powering of the usb devices!
Soon I will update the topic making it the best case scenario guide for "USB Host Mode and Charging on Nexus 6P, while casting to a Chromecast".
Also let me inform you that you are about to charge your phone with a simple/classic USB wall charger of 2.0A electricity while having it connected on a chromecast (via wifi) and a DIY self-powered USB HUB. You have a portable pc in your pocket indeed!
(The trick was to create a stand with a case fan (16V) to cool down that heat monster snapdragon 810 and let the phone charge instead of losing energy even while charging.)
More info soon, there are still cool and kinda safe things to do with your "old" device ^_^,
Have a nice day, George.
