Rooted my NT successfully! But..I mistakenly assigned BOX as my video player and cannot seem to find the way to undo it back to MX Video Player (which was working fin until I hit the wrong button choosing BOX as default). Now, all my .AVI video's launch BOX! Also...how do I access the extra memory freed up? I know it's there because I saw it, but I'd like to be able to move files to it easily.
OK, a few more. I am using GO Launcher EX and want to delete some of the icons at the bottom...how? Finally, when I connect my NT to my laptop and go into Android market, it recognizes my NT as "Barnes&Noble BNTV250." Is this limiting what I can install and/or should it be seeing it as something else - it is preventing me from installing many apps.

My experience with HC, ADW, & Zeam Launcher is you - ClickHold the Icon then drag it to a trashcan that pops up as a result of the ClickHold.
for the vid player problem you wanna go to the market and download "Manage Applications" then open it find BOX and clear the defaults. This will allow the prompter screen to come back up when clicking a movie.
As for the icons I dont know if your talking shortcuts or just the way GO launcher has the bottom main icons looking...you can download countless themes for this particular launcher and every theme makes the bottom icons look different. Im rocking the windows 7 theme for the GO launcher.
Hope some of this helped.
Got to the same place you specified. Have tried clearing defaults for BOX multiple times and its not working - keeps opening BOX.
uninstall box? then reinstall when it uses mx as default?
Figured it out
Uninstalled BOX. Accessed AVI file through ES File Explorer. Click and hold on it until menu opens, then selected "open as" and chose video, then got the options to select a new video player.
good. glad it worked
Any ideas on how to access the additional space freed up bu rooting? When I plug into my PC I get two new drives, MyNook and Removable disk. Double clicking on MyNook brings up all the basic folders, but clicking on the removable drive does nothing except give me a message "Please insert a dsik into removable drive G"
Is this partition still hidden or unrecognizable in some way?

Do you have an SD card? That's what the other drive is for. The B&N storage is not yet accessible in that way.

I do not have an SD card installed. I rooted the unit so the extra memory is out there somewhere. I tried using ES File manager to move a file to it per a video i saw, but it would not move it to that location.
From my experience the extra space is available on the NT but is not accessible when connected to my computer. I just copy what I need to my sd card or the public space in /mnt/ to make it available. I haven't tried using WiFi Explorer yet though.
So that appears to confirm what I was thinking- that everything has to go to the /mnt/ partition first (or come off an SD card), then it can be transferred to the B&N partition.
Is it still considered a B&N partition once you root and free it up? And what becomes of the B&N Downloads folder within the media folder?

I love HTC phones and the 8929 hands down my FAV. had to use BB for the past 2yrs. Now I got an HTC back in my hands. I was expecting it to be familiar to the tilt but now I feel really stupid.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to load my music (not itunes, that is all the info I can find) or pictures. I don't want an App. I'd like to see my file system or even be able to see the SD card but I can't find it on my puters file system.
So I know this means I am missing something simple. The handbook talks about amazon and mp3 store and the like. i have my own stuff I want.
So, can someone please point me to a link for dummies that will tell me how i can see my SD card and drag and drop my photos, ringtones, and music onto this phone.
I guess BB's media manger got me spoiled, hell even Motorola has great software for this simple stuff. I got the HTC sync loaded on the PC and all contacts loaded up but that is it.
I'm sorry for such a simple question but I'm lost and can't see the phone for the screen! Please help....
Thanks
when you hook it up to your pc a pop up should come up, select disk drive. if it doesnt pop up, slid open the notification tray and click on where it says "charge only" and change it to disc drive. it should pop up on your computer just like if you plugged in a flash stick.
just drag and drop the files onto your sd. the built in music/gallery apps will find the files and display them for you.

Thanks, I did that and your right the files did show. But the files are very different looking when compared to a windows and I didn't see a disk marked "sd card" or any files that look like they were on a sd card. So I stopped. if I move the files am I moving to the card or the phone memory?
Again, this is a very noob question for a forum of this type so Thanks for taking the time to answer. If you know of a stickies or any link where i can learn this system on my own i'd be happy to read it. But an answer would be great to. In any event looks like I have a lot of reading to do. I learned about my 8525 and 8929 from this site so I started here 1st. this site rocks.
Thanks
when you select it to go to "disc drive" it only hooks up the SD card, so no matter what you see in there, odd file folders, temporary files, etc, it's just stuff your apps put in there or you downloaded from the net, etc. not the phone's memory, just the card.
I usually follow the rule of "if I don't know what it is, don't touch it" which is a good creed to live by. sometimes apps just create folders and files on the sd card to free space up on your phone's internal memory. if you delete them, you could loose data for those specific apps, but even if you upped and deleted them all you wouldn't be doing anything that would would cripple your phone, just lose things like game saves, settings for certain apps, nothing you couldn't restore eventually.
anyway, to keep everything good and organized, just once you get it set to disc drive, go ahead and make a new folder called music, one called pictures, video, etc and then dump the files into their respective folder, the phone will pick em up no matter where they are.
If you're anything like me, you want to keep your internal memory as low as possible while filling your phone up with apps. I typically move every app that I can to the sd card to keep the internal memory usage to the bare minimum. The "Failed to move application. System updates cannot be installed on external media" error was really bugging me so I started playing around with Root Explorer.
How to move any app to the sd card
Open Root Explorer
Click "Mount R/W"
Click "system"
Click "app"
Long press the app you choose to move
In options, scroll down to "Move"
Click the back arrow softkey twice
Click "sdcard"
Click "Paste"
Scroll to the app you just moved and click on it
Click "Install" when the package installer opens
Click "Ok" when you're prompted to replace the application
You can now open the application to test it or click "Done"
Navigate back to "settings"
Click "Applications"
Click "Manage Applications"
Scroll down to the app you just installed click on it
Click "Move to SD card" and watch the "Total" and "Application" numbers drop
I've moved about a dozen system apps to the sd card and have not had any problems. Facebook still syncs with my contacts, internet still works, market still functions.
I'm sure this same fuction can be performed with adb commands. If someone would like to write them I'll post them here.
Want an even easier way? Install Titanium Backup and long press on app, it will give you some options and at the bottom there will be one for Move to SD card. This works for all user apps but not for a lot of the system ones that come baked in. Once you move all of the ones you can though, you'll have plenty of room since Froyo roms are generally pretty light anyway.

So I have been having duplicate song issues. It seemed to happen when I moved around my files. My music player list will show like 2 or 3 albums, but only one will play. The other one or two entire albums will give an error saying 'This file does not exist.' I see that 'Media scanner running' info on the status bar but it never fixes this issue. Anyone else have this problem or a fix?
If it matters this has happened both on internal and external memory.
Thanks.
Nope, never had this problem. Try to remove all music files and see if the player shows anything. If not, then add the ones that were showing duplicates and see if it happens again.
I am having the same issue but i normally use double twist
Delete your cache in Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, Music.
Also, delete the /sdcard/albumthumbs folder.
Reboot and it should rebuild your song list.
I had tried deleting cache before but didn't see it. I didn't realize there were multiple sorting options on this phone, whoops. The 'delete cache' was dark and would not let me click it, but I tried deleting data and the albumthumbs but it still didn't work. I am just going to try erasing it all and re-adding the music and not moving it around again... Thanks for the help though!
Did you find your fix? I had to leave everything out of a folder on the sdcard to stop this annoyance.
I hope this helps
If you are rooted I would recomend purchasing the full version of the app "SD Maid" from the market.
I had an issue from doubletwist that was resulting in duplicate music files.
I'm pretty sure that the reason it happens is; when we are syncing music (possibly alot at once) most programs recognize the 16g internal storage as possibly a indipendent device. This could be because of the potential to swap out your sd card to share music but on second though probably not.
its probably just a random error.
If you are unrooted or otherwise unable to use sd maid (id recomend rooting and flashing a custom rom but if thats not what you want to do then get the free astro file manager from the market and you should see in your home directory a file called music or it could within another file titled media. Regardless where you want it to be is on your external sd card.
you can delete the directory titled music but first check the file titled external media.
You should see all of your music there as well.
I have played with the settings on doubletwist as well as spotify and this is the best solution.
(If you use sd maid then go into duplicates and very very very patiently select all of the boxes it lets you and then just hit the delete duplicates up top)

What format are your books? How are you trying to move them? via usb? dropbox?
Do you have an SD card installed? Without one, only 1GB is seen on your internal memory if you connect your noob to your pc with the usb cord (but then you can move it to anywhere else).
Install a file explorer program (file expert is a good free one, root explorer is too but it has the possibility of having you misclick and mess up permissions on system folders).
Books/anything else moved to your NT's internal memory via usb -> shows up in /media. Books that you want your nook's native book applications to see -> move them to /data/books. Books that you have on your sdcard -> will not be seen by your nook's ebook reader program but you can make any folder anywhere and put books in it.
I recommend using an sdcard and downloading a program called Coolreader (android market); it's the best ebook reader I've found on this platform. It has a ton of settings and lets you configure it entirely (font, spacing, layout, behavior, etc etc). It reads from .zip archives and supports quite a few formats. It won't see anything with DRM protection on it that hasn't been removed, nor will it see .lit or amazon's proprietary formats. Anything with DRM on it that you bought from a certain market (Kindle, Adobe DRM ebook stores, etc) will only be read in associated programs (until you remove the drm) :/ Calibre is a great program (on the pc-side) to convert between book formats and manage your library, as a side note (not related to drm removal).
if I kept them on on my SD card how would I get them to show up using the stock ebook reader? Also....what format can I use? I have them in .mobi and .opf
Since I am rooted I can access the other 15GB ... I tried using es filer explorer (enabling root) and trying to move them to the books folder but I still cant get them to show up using the google books...kindle app and the stock app on the tablet

For books on your SD card go to your Library application -> my files -> press memory card, and your books should be there (at least the ones in a format it sees/reads).
Stuff in /data/books will show up automatically on your shelves, I think. Stuff in /media books will need to be imported the same way as above: library -> my files -> books (just not clicking on memory card button).
The Nook's eReader will see: EPUB, PDF, DOC, TXT, DOCM, DOCX. Epub is a great thing to convert all your books to as it's widely supported and is the public domain standard (by the way). Other reader apps will see more formats. I think .opf is epub though no? Or rather it's .epub with extra metadata, so that should be seen right off the bat. If not, do try Calibre out. One click conversions to any formats, and previews of how it looks on that format.
I am so sorry to keep asking about this...I have tried putting them in the data/books but nothing showed up in my library. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Sorry if I keep asking stupid questions...just really want this to show up on my "shelf"
Try this:
Open library -> my stuff (upper right) -> find book (sd card) -> select book/long press book -> select add to shelf from pop out menu. It will ask you to make a shelf; you can edit and add shelves via the menu that pops up (create new shelf/add to favorites).
Does that work?
Putting them in /data/books adds it to the reader+reader's directory. I could have sworn there was a way to mass-autoadd things to the shelves (checking now).
edit: Ok, I can't get it to work except through actually adding it with the Library app Rebooting the device puts the books from my files -> add to shelves in the "book" tab however, but they do not automatically appear there if you close/restart the library app without rebooting the nook. Odd behavior. If you have a lot of books the library seemed very finger intensive.
I can't figure out how to mass-move anything inside the Library app either, and I'm not sure whether it has this capability either. Yeah, I quickly moved away to using a file explorer app + another reader, as you can see
Hi ...
Nook is unable to see/read .mobi and .opf. You must convert them to epub, using a free program called Calibre.
Or they are locked by the use of a DRM... again Calibre can help you.
Try to find an ebook is an "epub," reread slowly, Zmobie's excellent posts, then try again...
ok....so I can get them to show in "my shelf" if and only if keep it on my SD card. My goal is to keep my books on my nt and music movies and pics on my SD card because it is only an 8GB.
I have a John Grisham collection that I have in a folder labled "john grisham" Should I not put it in a folder and just put it in the data/books folder
Ok, there are a bunch of book directories on the internal memory: media/My Files/Books seems to be the only one that automatically shows up in the Library books section but ONLY if you reboot. Copy/move the books you want on the internal memory there, to have them show up in Library.
If you (or when I did anyway) add a book through the Library application it will add it to the shelves, if you pull it from an sd card, or the 1gb media/My Files/Books storage folder. I went and pasted a bunch of books to test this and the Library app only sees things that is labeled as user storage (which I guess makes sense).
The way to mass-add books to the Library, without one by one dragging and adding through the Library app itself, is to move the files you want to automatically load up in Library (under the "books tab" - won't be added to a shelf automatically) is to copy all of them into media/My Files/Books, and restart the nook. The restart is needed as there doesn't seem to be a way to force it to scan for new books without a restart :/.
So:
It should *definitely* see all your books if you move them to media/my files/books, under the "books" tab, NOT under "my stuff" tab, if you copy and reboot the nook. You can then add them to shelves from the main "books" tab (which is what Library starts up in).
I don't know whether it scans inside folders - it *should* so you should try moving your John Grisham folder to media/My Files/books and see.
(I wonder what the three other /books locations are for :/. I don't seem to force Library to automatically recognize stuff in them. The reader does recognize anything in those directories, but then it's just a folder listing anyway).
edit: Ok it works inside folders for me. Have fun!
Thank you so much! Now if can figure out how to make folders on my desktop I will be good to go.....thank you so much

On the Nook default launcher you can't, I think*? It's a reason I use another launcher (go/adw) and just create links to the Nook applications I use. You can make folders by default in either of the two above launchers.
*If anyone has managed this, do tell.

In Go launcher? HMMM. *tries*
edit: Oh, that's funny. You're right! I never actually make folders that way, because I have a few folders I got from accidentally dragging an icon onto another icons. They get grouped into a folder automatically I assumed the normal way worked, but if not, try that.
It doesn't work in any of the launchers. It must be disabled on the nook entirely in that case. Weird!
I wasn't able to drop appear together with ads to make a folder so I switched to go launcher and I like it so much better. It it what I use on my roped droid x2. I don't know if it was my hacked downloaded version of adw that caused this but for some reason I could not put anything on the top 1 inch or so of the screen. But I have had no issues with GO.
Sorry to keep asking newborn queriins. This is my first tablet. I have noticed that even though it is rooted and has an android os on it, there are still a lot of things that canny be done. Yep, there are a lot of things disabled on the NT and won't work until apps get updated or mods are released for the tablet. It's a new (and restricted) device, so this is normal really; various things won't work off the bat. I think there is a Facebook app thread in these forums (or the dev forum) that gets that app to work somehow. I don't use it so I don't know specifics.
I heard that ADW launchers recent update changed/broke some things, so that might be why it isn't working perfectly. I use go launcher myself and ADW only for emergencies currently, yeah. Anyway, no worries on asking newbie questions - means the device is getting more users and exposure! Have fun with it.
I love the SGP611, except it's low memory. I was anxiously awaiting MM and then so disappointed when they didn't allow you to utilize SD card more. My daughters tablet is used for apps and its stores such a sorry amount of apps. Is there any way I can change the memory to SD card without rooting it? I don't want to brick my daughters tablet and I'm not sure I'm confident enough to root it, plus we couldn't afford a new tablet if something went wrong. Any advice would be appreciated.

I think you mean storage, not memory (two different things altogether)...that's why the other person recommended going back to 4.4. Pretty sure he was referring to better RAM management than 6.0.
Really, your best bet is to have her be mindful of what apps she actually uses. Most times there are games rarely ever opened hogging up storage.

Thank you, you are right I do mean storage. I wasn't aware of the different wording. All I really want is for my memory card to be able to have more on it. I wonder why Sony chose not to go with making external storage your main storage. Is there a way to force it to go to SD card without rooting?

What you can do SAFELY, is go into your App settings and change what storage they use. Not every App has the ability to do this. Some games have this option, Pokemon Go being one of them. You can move the data stored on device internally to instead be stored on SD card. This can add up if several apps can do this.
Anyways, it's a thought.

Yes, thank you. I have done this already. I appreciate your advice. Is there anything I can do that is less risky than rooting, and perhaps a little more novice friendly, but isn't 100% risk free? My daughter is only 4, but she loves having loads of different apps and rememebers ones I've deleted.
Here's a post I found that digs into the issue more. With some solves laid out in a tutorial. Sony seems to have disabled the feature in MM...this will enable it.
Adaptable Storage
You can also give the Sony suggested walk-through below a try...let us know if it helps.
You might also try using a lower capacity SD card...sometimes certain devices can be finicky with anything 32GB or over.
It looks like Sony devices have been mentioned in that regard.
Here's some tips for managing your available memory. Try these methods one after the other.
Open the notification by dragging the status bar downwards, then tap the notification. The storage menu opens.
Move files or apps to the memory card (SD card), if you have one inserted.
Move files to a computer (if you no longer need them on your device).
Delete files from the internal memory.
To move files from the device memory to the microSD card (if inserted):
Open Settings > Storage
Scroll down to the end of the menu and select Transfer data to SD card.
Select the items (photos, videos and music) you wish to move to the SD card.
Un-select a category if you see the information, that there is not enough memory on the SD card to transfer all files.
Select Transfer to start the transfer to the SD card.
To delete files from the device memory:
Open Settings > Storage > Internal Storage.
Tap a category to select what you want to delete from the device memory.
Depending on the category selected you have different options on how to proceed:
Apps: Selecting Apps will open the Apps menu. Here you can uninstall downloaded applications, if you do not need them anymore.
Pictures, videos: Selecting this option will open the Album application or Google Photos. In these applications you can delete pictures or videos to free device memory.
Audio: If you tap Audio you can see the audio tracks currently stored on your device memory. You can delete tracks using the File Commander or the Music / Walkman application.
Downloads: In this category you can see a list of all files you have downloaded to your Xperia™ phone or tablet. To delete a file just touch and hold it and then tap the trash bin icon in the top right corner.
Cached Data: Applications can aggregate quite huge amounts of cached data while working. If you select this category you can delete all cached data at once. This will not delete any personal data. Deleting the application cache from time to time is highly recommended to free device memory.
Misc.: In this category you can see files and folders which have been created manually on the device memory. To delete a file or folder just tick the checkbox in front of the file or folder name and tap the trash bin icon in the top row. Please be careful while deleting files and folders, as a deleted item cannot be recovered.

Note that as of Marshmallow you can definitely move apps to the SD card, but only the ones that Sony hasn't bundled as part of the ROM. However, even doing so doesn't change the cached files that those apps use... For example, I had Hearthstone installed, and while I can "move" the app to the SD card, it still unpacks over 1GB of files to the internal storage, which sort of defeats the purpose. I have a 64 GB card, and as long as its Class 10 or above you shouldn't have any issues with not being able to write or use it for media files, etc
I ended up removing the game all together, and I can't remove enough of the bloatware to free up space.
When you're in the Storage screen as listed in the above guide, you also can't set the SD card as default.. the option to do so doesn't appear within Sony's ROM.
I would suggest that OP looks at the games she has, and removes the larger ones, keeping more of the smaller ones installed. Otherwise, unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom ROM is the only other choice if you want to stick with that hardware and want to free up more room
