UnlockRoot and Rom manager - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys ...
Need some help understanding something ...I was to chiken to root via Odin so I ended up rooting my GS2 with Unlockrootdotcom ...Its pc based and unrooted my phone without any prbs ..I then installed Titanium Bckup and Rom manager so far so good.
Now here is the prb ..I would like to make a full backup of my phone before I start messing around with Kernels and Roms. When I select "Backup Curent ROm" phone reboots and get the famous "E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed" ....Is the prb with the way Unlockroot rooted my phone or am I missing something ?
I read that I need to flash with Cf-root but would that not alter the kernel and therefore it I would not have an orginal full back up
I guess Im a little confused ..any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like you don't have CWM recovery, rather stock (3e) recovery. In order to get CWM recovery, you need to flash a kernel which comes with it.

How can I tell I have 3E recovery ?

It says 3e at the top.
If you want to dump your current kernel before flashing one with CWM recovery, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409484

After flashing a kernel with CWM recovery, reboot into recovery to backup or CWM Manager app (installed by Chainfire CF-root kernel). ROM Manger is not compatible with CWM Recovery on SGS2.

[Q] Problem with recovery ROM Manager and Galaxy S2 (XWKDD)

Hello ... I ask you a little help on ROM Manager and Recovery.
I just root the galaxy S2 with the procedure supercurio, so my ROM is pretty much stock ... I was a XWKDD.
ROM Manager (in his opinion) regularly install ClockworkMod 4.0.0.2, but when I restart in recovery and launch the update.zip I get the following error message:
Finding update package ...
Opening update package ...
Verifiyng update package ...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Googling a little I found how to sign files.zip, moddied 3e recovery and also to ignore the signs in zip files ... but none of these workarounds work ...
So how I can use this 3e recovery with unsigned files?
Or ... how can I replace the 3e with the 2e recovery? (There ROM with the 2e which do not differ much from the stock ROM?)

EDIT: I do not like the CWM4 as the recovery deletes it's self after about a day for some reason, then i have to reflash.
I am using the Stock XWKF4 rom (rooted) with superuser and busybox and i also can't use ROM to install clockwork mod recovery.
I get the same error as the guy above me.....Help
Please, Thanks,
Andrew.

Moving to Q&A
Having this problem too.
In ROM Manager, I flashed the latest CWM, then reboot into recovery.
It reboots to Android system recovery (3e).
Any idea how I can get recovery working. Do I need to flash a different kernel?
I actually JUST dealt with this issue myself. I had the same kernel as you.
You need to flash a new stock ROM in odin, I used KG6. I just used the stock kernel, not the whole package.
The stock ROMs can be found here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Then when this is done, you use odin to flash a CF Root for that kernal following these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Thanks.
Got this working yesterday by flashing this kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118918
I am also having issues. I have an SGS2 with 2.3.3..
I have rooted the phone and am trying to install Cyanogenmod7 (nightly build #22) to my phone.
I have downloaded ROM Manager, Flashed Clockwork Mod Recovery (4.0.1.5) and have tried to 'Install ROM from SD Card', then selected the cyanogenmod. However, its coming up with the following message:
Finding update package ...
Opening update package ...
Verifiyng update package ...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I have tried to download 3e without signature verification "3e_recovery_no_sig_check" but this has not worked. I am a bit of a noob at this so appreciate any lamens terms help anyone can provide!!
Hey guys. I tried the KG6 and CF kernel, and the lulz kernal. Both are giving me t 3e error on CWM. What else can I do?
cant flash roms
Hey guys,
I too am having this problem. I have completely lost the ability to flash roms from cwm. It says "Installing update" when its a new rom and it flashes it in less that 3 seconds and then it gets stuck at the boot. If I use rom manager it just says "E: signature verification failed on the whole file". I have tried the following:
-restoring stock rom (KE2) and then using cf-root which installs 4.0 and cwm 4.0.0.2
-formatting sdcard
It's really bad, I am dwelling on just one nandroid backup of Cognition and I can't even update it!
Thanks for your help
You cannot use 3e to install custom roms. 3e (blue color) is the default samsung recovery. When you try to flash custom rom with 3e, it will fail verification.
You need to use Clockwork Recovery (orange color).
Try installing Speedmod Kernel instead of using CF-Root kernel and see what happens.
Mate that totally fixed it thanks so much for the help! Now I can get back to flashing stuff!!

Problem to flash CWM
Hi,
Here are the steps that got me into this situation:
1. My provider installed a test version on my Galaxy S2 in order to resolve some problems.
2. After the above I rooted my device using ODIN 1.85 and SuperOneClick 2.1.1 using XWKDD kernel.
The versions of my phone now are:
Model Number GT-I9100T
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband version I9100TJIKI1
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected]#2
Build Number GINGERBREAD.JIKI2
My intention is to flash CWM in order to install Cyanogenmod ROM. When I tried to flash the CWM using ROM Manager it failed. From what I read it is because I have 3e recovery.
I saw some suggestions for resolution, like flashing a stock kernel and than flash CWM again to avoid the invalid signature problem.
However, I couldn't find any kernel that fits my device situation.
Any suggestions for a route I can take to resolve the situation?
a route that will leave my device functioning
Thanks, Nissim
You should try and install a custom kernel which also flashes clockwork mod recovery on your phine like speedmod, ninphetamine or hellcat's kernel.

Thank you for the advise.
Unfortunately digging into the above kernels you suggested, I couldn't find that any of them fits my situation (Build:GINGERBREAD.JIKI2 and kernel:XWKDD).
I saw clear warnings not to select the wrong kernel.
Look for cfroot kernel. It is almost stock. Just rooted. I think i saw ki2 over there.

[Q] Rom Manager CWM Recovery problem

Hey guys, I rooted my device with the CF-KG2 kernal and am trying to use Rom Manager with Clockwork Mod 4.0.1.5. to install Cyanogen mod.
I can't get into CWM recovery for anything after installing without getting:
Finding update package ...
Opening update package ...
Verifiyng update package ...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I can't find a solution to this on google or anywhere on this forum.
I also tried manually wiping my data/cache and installing the cyanogen nightly 26 with the CWM 4.0 included with CF kernal. It installs fine but won't boot past the samsung logo, so I had to restore.
Any help is appreciated!
Do a fresh download of a cm7 nightly.
Put it into your internal sd card.
Boot into cwm recovery
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
Flash cm7 zip
If you get stuck at the screen flash the zip again from recovery and it should boot.
Also, don't flash it via flash update, do it via flash zip.

Thanks a ton. Believe it or not just installing the zip twice actually installed cyanogen perfectly. Amazing.

It's weird, seems to be due to custom versions of cwm recovery in most kernels, the other way todo it is to flash codeworx's cwm kernel then cm7, which seems to make it work with one flash of cm, but glad to hear you got it going.

I also have the same problem, errors when trying to boot CWM recovery. Did not allow me to back up anything. and now my phone is stuck on the Galaxy S 2 boot screen and keeps on looping. I think I was using lightning ROM previously. What is the next thing I should do to make the phone work again.
Once the phone works, how do I get CM7 on it? Thanks so much. I am a new user and am not really familiar with the process.

Pull the battery and boot to cwm again. Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and flash cm7 (provided u put it on ur sd card).
If not, flash a stock rom, let boot and place latest cm7 .zip on ur ad card. Flash a kernel with cwm and flash cm7 .
I also have this problem. Also I can't back up my current rom, because it gives the same message as in First post. And I want to flash MIUI -rom. What to do?
Any solutions to this? I rooted using Zedomax's Method. all went smoothly. When I went into Rom Manager to backup, it said I had to flash CWM, I said ok. Now I get the same error as the OG. Don't know if the recovery worked prior to going into ROM Manager. I'm thinking of running the Zedomax's Method again to see if it reinstalls a workable CWM.

Rom Manager Premium Problem

Iv just purchased Rom Manager Premium and the first thing I did was select flash Clockworkmod recovery then reboot into recovery.
After reboot I just get the message:
E:faield to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Does this feature not work with the galaxy s2?

What rom and kernel are you using?
also you are rooted right?
Rom manager doesnt work with them all.
You are missing the step of flashing the zImage of your rooted kernel via CWM. Copy the zImage to your SD card and then flash it via CWM with the option 'Flash Kernel', device will reboot. Done.

I'm on stock Rom with Chainfires Root kernel. Phone is rooted fine.
I've Flashed ClockworkMod using odin this time but I was disappointed that Rom Manager couldn't do it for me without the use of Odin.
Well I thought Clockworkmod was installed ok but every time I try to boot into cwm I get the green android with a exclamation mark. I then have to do a battery pull then it boots into cwm recovery fine.
Any Ideas?
I can access CWM recovery too. But not the rom manager's recovery.

same thing happens to me, im currently running Lite'ning v6.1 so its rooted fine, however CWM still says E:failed to verity whole-file signature
Need help with this
Top of CWM says "Android system recovery (3e)"
@ Sparksltd, on thats android screen with the android and the ! mark, press the power key, this will then show you the CWM menus.
So it seems rom manager can't install cwm on my phone without me installing cwm on my phone in the first place using Odin.
Seems kinda pointless to me.

CWM recovery

Hi
Something odd happens with my SGS2
I had CWM recovery installed since i rooted my SGS2.
Later i installed ROM Manager and used it to upgrade the recovery.
Rom manager is reporting now 4.1.0.5 but, if i reboot in recovery i see 4.0.0.2 and an error: 'failed to verify the whole-file signature'
I tried to reinstall it from rom manager and it ends with success but after rebooting in recovery, the same problem.
The triangle and error.
Do i have an easy way to fix it that doesn't involve odin?
Thank you

Instructions
CWM Manager
Because of incompatibility with ROM Manager, I wrote and included "CWM Manager". This is a new app (as of March 30, 2011). You can find it under Applications -> CWM. It is much faster to use than manually booting into CWM and selecting these options.
jje
To use rom manager you need to use a kernel that supports it and not cf-root from what i can understand. I think theres a thread for cwm 5.0 here somewhere. (someone please correct me if im wrong)

[Q] CWM Recovery Error

I have SGS2 rooted vis DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit (zergRush Exploit).
I have installed Rom Manager Premium and then installed CWM Recovery from within the application.
I wanted to backup my ROM but I receive the following error after the phone restarts into recovery.
Code:
Finding update package
Opening update package
Verifying update package
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Can any one tell me whats wrong?
Is CF-Root must for CWM Recovery? or other root methods are not good for CWM.
Don't use Rom Manager & CWRecovery together. Use/install one or the other. Rom Manager has a habit of breaking CWRecovery on SGS2 & can also cause bootloops.
So that means if you want to use Rom Manager, you need to root your phone with a method other than CFRoot which installs CWRecovery by default. And conversely if you root your phone with CFRoot do not install Rom Manager.

I agree with MB. Rom manager was good on the S1 until 3e recovery was introduced.
Basically, you have rooted your phone only but still have stock recovery. From what I remember, for rom manager to install cwm recovery it needs to flash an update zip. But it can't do so on the stock 3e recovery.
So as per MB's advice, flash cf root and use the cwm app that it installs for backups, flashing zips etc.

Because I already have a rooted phone (Non CF-Root).. can you suggest a method to install the latest CWM Recovery which will be compatible with ROM Manager.
The only reason I am backing up ROM is to save my data before ICS update, just in case things go wrong.
No idea. I started with CFRoot, and have used kernels that have CWM installed as default since, so I've never installed CWM separately/as a standalone. There are plenty of posts on here detailing how to install same tho.
Might want to get rid of Rom Manager first.

Do you boot to stock recovery when you boot with combination (volume up+ power+ home)? Because I had the same problem and when I booted to racovery with the combination, It was CWM. So I use rom managaer to install, and then normal boot to flash. If it doesn't boot to CWM eitherway, flash CF-Root again and don't use rom manager to flash
