[Q] How do you choose a android phone.? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, I have been googleing and reading a lot in this forum and others. I want to get a new android phone. Am a noob in android but a geek so definitely gonna play with it.
I have tried google and reading all, but can't find specific answers. so,
I have three options (ignoring price, all have 1ghz cpu)
1) Motorola Defy+
2) Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V
3) Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman - WT19i
I got really confused with all the specs so wanted to know how the expert choose the phone.
for example,
1) Both Sony ericsson phone have dual cam (i can ignore that because 3g isn't really great in India)
2) then comes memory, Sony Ericsson phone have 320 MB internal in both phones, and defy+ have 2gb (doesn't matter in gingerbread).
3) Defy+ have 1 Gb ROM, does ROM plays a important role?
4) I was reading the defy forums, it says it got the eFuse, so once I update, I won't be able to get back to previous ROM, so hard process for customs ROMS,
5) Defy+'s bootloader is locked and can't be unlocked, wheres Neo V's can be unlocked, why is bootloader is so important.
6) Both Sony Ericsson gonna have ICS, can anyone tell me the ETA for Defy's stable ICS release
7) I also have seen in some picture, the ICS with kernel version 3, can we change the kernel version?
8) seems I won't be able to play(root, install custom ROMs) with defy+ but can with sony, is it really true?
If am missing any issues please mark
Thanks in advance, hope to get answer

5. With a locked bootloader, you won't be able to flash anything unofficial.
6. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378691.
7. Only if you have the source for the kernel you want to change it to.
8. If no progress is made on unlocking the bootloader (probably it will be done eventually), then yes.

All those phones suck. No offence but save a bit of money and get a decent phone or don't get one. You'll just be looking at everyone else's phone and wishing you did in the end. The SGS3 is only around the corner. Get an SGS2 whilst they're a little down on price.

I usually choose based on:
1) Locked bootloader. If it has one, don't buy. The Motorola has one. Maybe it will be unlocked eventually but maybe and eventually are bad words to bet the farm on.
2) Amount of activity on the phone's XDA subforum (more is better). If it has none, you want to mod it, and it wasn't released five minutes ago, don't buy.
3) Existence of a Cyanogenmod port (better if it has one). I'm a CM fan, and will run it if I can.
4) Specs and price.

Nexus S is better than all those and probably cheaper where you are. great phone with ICS.

thanks all,
but tell me how the Read Only Memory plays inportant role?

ROM size doesn't if you have an SD card slot anyway. Most phones have more ROM space than you'll ever need; worst-case-scenario, you need to re-partition like the Galaxy S for ICS.
RAM, however, can make a huge difference, especially on Android with its process caching.

should I go for defy+,
can I downgrade to sbf GB, after installing the CM9/ICS?

I personally wouldn't go for any of those phones. Motorola phones... well let's just say I'm not a fan. Locked bootloaders should be a no-go for anyone wanting to mod, unless you don't mind jumping through hoops.
I'm not really familiar with Sony phones, but I don't think that they're exactly top of the line.
If money is an issue, I'd save up and get an HTC phone or a Nexus. Easier to mod, and generally better phones than what I've seen you mention, even older models. That's just my opinion, so take it or leave it, but I think you'd find yourself much happier with a phone that can be easily modded.
For the record, ROM has to do with app and data storage space. If the phone has an SD card slot then you can expand the memory up to 32 gigs, otherwise you're stuck with whatever size the phone comes with for USB storage. You can then run apps from external storage if you find yourself running low on space, but apps also run better on internal. Ram, as mentioned, also plays a vital role - in many ways more so than ROM. You'll want to future-proof your phone as much as possible when purchasing, so take these into account.
If you really want the Motorola then go for it, but I'd check out other options that you haven't listed and see what development is like for those. The more development, the better.

should i buy this phone ? !!

hello guys , right now i'm a htc wildfire s owner and i'm looking to replace it with a new android device ( better hardware ) and iam very confused between 2 devices the Motorola Atrix 4g and the Sony Xperia Sola but i kinda like the Atrix because of this huge forum there is alot of Roms and stuff but i wanted u Atrix owners to help me explain some points
- i read here on xda that all the new Atrix devices well not be unlocked link here sooo is that true ?
- if i bought this device i think i'll unlock it after a couple weeks and if i wanted to know what isn't exactly working in the CM9 rom cuz it's my favorite and does toggling bluetooth and wifi force restart the device ( ohhh god i sufferd this issue with my wfs ) and does the HDMI port work with ICS based roms ? !!
- is there a webtop for ics roms ?
- in worst cases is CM7 fully working ? !! ( stable ) cuz i can't imagine my self stuck with the orginal rom
that's it for now, thank u guys in advance hope to to join u soon
The Sola and Atrix are both damn good phones, The Sola looks nice, has a good(similar to i9100)chipset, better camera, better screen and the Atrix has more functionality (TegraZone, webtop, docks, 1gb ram etc)
The Atrix also has a lot more development going on at the moment, compared to the Sola and the latest CM7.2 build runs perfectly on the Atrix.
But it's up to you.
Edit( whether it is "un-lockable" depends on where you buy it from, yes the newer ones aren't, but they still have the initial batches floating around)

well thank's to you mate , but are u sure the sola has a better screen compared to the atrix ( the atrix has a higher ppi and res !! ) and u said it's wether unlockable or not depeinding on where i buy i don't relly get what u mean but i'll be buying it from egypt and not from a specific carrier soo it's not locked for a certain carrier and can u please provide me with any information about what's not working in the cm9 build and most important the HDMI out ....

Resolution of the screen is really nice but for me personally a little too high for a 4" screen.
But the main problem is the colours it produces. Blacks aren't completely black they have a slight brownish greyish look to them. The other colours in general look washed out. Doesn't bother me too much but when comparing to other phones the difference in colours is instantly noticeable.
The atrix hardware is nice. Will run anything you throw at it. We have a very nice stable cm7.2 rom
If I were you I would wait a little while longer to see if Motorola release official ICS for the atrix before buying one unless you don't mind sticking with gingerbread.

Atrix is a very solid phone, and I would take it over the Sola.
You have GB/CM7 for now, and CM7 is very stable. ICS coming sometime in QTR 3...

Well the screen is also smaller on the sola, and it has a full set of sub pixels as well as the bravia engine.
The Atrix has a pentile matrix, so even though there is more pixel density, the pentile matrix makes individual pixels more visible.
Well since you're buying in egypt, there probably is a chance your local store has the initial-release stock of the atrix. But there is no garuntee, I bought a second atrix (for a friend), here in New Zealand a few weeks ago and it was unlockable,
I personally haven't tried ICS or JB because im more interested in a working phone (LOL), I don't like having to toy around with things that only work half the time and/or not at all, thats why I try to stay away from the roms until they're stable.....But still, support the developers for their hard work, even if you aren't using their roms just yet (they all look promising).
there are a lot of things not working in the CM9/CM10 roms, that even the devs can't list them all, and a lot of functionality is software-based because there is no driver support for hardware until next month or so, when we get the official ICS from Moto.
The phone works great on CM7 if you're willing to buy it now.
Prefer to buy Galaxy Nexus, S2, Notes, etc... for most update ROM is already there.
if my Atirx will be broken, I Will buy another Atrix. This is one of the greates devices, fingerprint lock, webtop, and many more Especialy Tegra2 and 1GB RAM

okay your totally right the Galaxy nexus is a great phone but comparing the prices here where is live the atrix sells for 2000 EGP and the nexus for 3500 EGP so there is a huge difference that i can't afford right now and there is also a thing that i don't like about all the nexuses ( except the nexus one ) which is there is no SD Card ..... i can't really imagine my life without an SD Card
I'm considering the same 2 phones. Which phone did you buy, the Xperia Sola or the Atrix?
Atrix
the Atrix is still one of the best phones I have ever owned, and the accessories are great and probably much cheaper now
Like people have said before, cm7 works perfectly. But there is not gonna be any ics for this phone from motorola. The devs are working on jellybean right now. Epinter's cm10 is pretty much a daily driver with hw acceleration issues because of no drivers for kernel. Apart from that its a great rom.

Problem is that there will never be any official ICS from Motorola, and unless the Olympus ICS/JB kernel port is successful, it's likely there will never be any third party HW acceleration either. And yes, there is talk of Motorola releasing the code for the unfinished ICS kernel, but talk is one thing, but I wouldn't bet the farm on seeing it happen any more than I'd bet on a dead horse winning the Kentucky Derby.
Sure the device itself isn't bad, but the only support you will get for the device is dependent on a dwindling community. Honestly, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have just gotten something different, I would have ran away from the thing screaming like a little girl.

Advice request about Sony Xperia Tipo (ST21i, ST21a)

Hi all!
First of all I wish to thanks in advance for any of you who may stop by, and provide some tips, experience
regarding the next matter, advice request:
My context is that I am completely noob regarding choosing android phone.
I want to get my first one, but a low budget, and I thought about Sony Xperia Tipo, cause it uses Android ICS,
and its hardware specs are some better than comparing to others of similar budget as LG Optimus L3, Samsung Galaxy Mini
( phonearena.com/phones/compare/LG-Optimus-L3,Samsung-GALAXY-mini,Sony-Xperia-tipo/phones/6941,5147,7151 )
I already discarded going for Vodafone Smart II, cause after reading its thread in XDA (around 30 pages), despite it was posible
to be rooted at first, in 1 month the new versions have been capped by cel companies (the recovery, the fastboot etc), at least for Spain, Portugal versions, therefore the customization is getting quite impossible, or very random depending the version, the cel company, ...
I think the main problem it is that this Xperia Tipo has been released quite very recently,
and after been searching through forum about info for rooting the Xperia Tipo, I can't find any info about it :S.
So my 2 questions are:
- it is expected that Xperia Tipo will be rooted in a near future ( and therefore customizable with
ROMs ...) ?
- Taking in count any answer to this question, would you suggest to go for it,
or by other hand go for Samsung Galaxy Mini (despite it has worse HW, Android GingerBread,
BUT it has quite plenty support for rooting and flashing with custom ROMs) ?
Again thanks in advance for any advice, and excuse the long post! )
Cheers!
ive used this phone after recomending it for someone else. Its a great cheap ICS phone dont expect it to be really fast or to play excellant games but it is really good for the price under £100!!!. would i recomend it to someone else after using it YES!!!! just remember to clear the apps your not using from the RAM by pressing the Home key and holding it and swiping it to close it so it doesnt get laggy.
as for root im not a dev but im safley sure it will be rooted in the future as its got a SD card slot so its easier to install CWM recovery etc.
BUT it is new out and dont expect it to happen any time soon i have the Xperia U and thats been out ages now and i still dont have root it just takes time for the devs to get the phones and then to start work on them.
hope it helped

Thanks for the tip!
Being cheap phone is ok, in fact that is what I seek for, a low budget phone as a start point, looking for customization.
Well, I could get that Xperia Tipo for £48, while the Samsung Galaxy Mini would cost £32. HW (CPU, inbuilt mem, display res) difference and phone release date diff, explain the price difference, hehe.
I was tempted to get Vodafone Smart II (for £48, I think), but atfer reading this whole thread forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722811 , I found that it is a lottery, if I could get it rooted or not :S
My main doubt is if going for Samsung Galaxy Mini cause its great support in matters of rooting and customization, or expect that Xperia Tipo will get some nice support here in XDA, in the future ...
A third choice could be LG Optimus L3 which has worse display res, same price as Xperia Tipo, and it has some support here at forum for rooting and ROMs.
Regarding your Xperia U, I think there is quite nice support in this site, forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1728 , so you mention you still having probs to root it ?
I have just returned my Tipo today due to very poor reception. If you just want a phone to make calls and send texts then it should be more than adequate but if you are going to use it for browsing or games I would find something with a stronger processor as it can be very laggy after using it a while - even in menus. However the touchscreen is responsive and the display should be OK for making calls and texting but I found it very washed out when viewing pics etc. On my particular handset I could hear electrical interference through the headphones but this could be related to my reception fault I guess. If you can I advise you try it out before making a decision - if ur in the UK o2 shops usually have all there the phones on display switched on. If music is important to you the sound quality is very budget. Also the camera has no flash or autofocus. Tbh if it wasn't for the Sony xperia branding on the front I would have though this was a cheap chinese no-name handset as Sony really have cut costs on this one.
I can't comment on the Samsung but I have read bad things about the lg. Have you considered the Motosmart from Motorola. It has a similar spec to the tipo but at least the camera has a flash and its root able (running gingerbread)

I bought this phone a week ago. It's very nice for the price!. It isn't laggy, It has plenty of ram. Obviously it isn't so fast as would be needed for a device to play games, and doesn't have a big screen (or an hires one) if you have to surf the web a lot, but handles with no problems at all divx streaming from my pc, using mx-player. It's clearly better than vodafone smart_II and my device hasn't reception problems at all. The battery (this is a good point in my opinion) it's 1500mah just better than the usual 1200mah used in low-end devices
The camera can make decent photos but hasn't flash or aufocus at all & no front camera just like all the cheap phones.
BTW i think it's one of the best ICS devices avaiable here in Italy for about 150€.
I tried samsung galaxy mini too and this experia is a lot better in my opninion.
I have been using the mobile for more than a month... It's perfect .. Go for it... It is the best in the range... I do use it a lot and it has held up against everything... Custom ROM will be available veeeeeeeeeeeery soon... It is already rooted...

[Q] KitKat on Legend

Hi,
I've read that KitKat would need less resource compared to JB.
Since there are already ROM's based on JB for the Legend, do you think that a custom ROM will rapidly appear based on KitKat for this phone?
Thanks.
No.I don't think there are any developers left on this forum.
I too believe this won't happen, sadly. JB for Legend wasn't such a good idea, it simply can't run smoothly on that device. But, if what google says is true (about the hardware requirements), then 4.4 could be the greatest thing that has happened to this phone in a while. I still use my Legend as an mp3 player, but i would just love it if it was more functional, so i could use it in some high-risk situations (to avoid breaking my GN4). This could be Legends last chance to die with honor
Personally I have the Baked Blackbean Rom on my Legend (JB thus) and I'm rather satisfied of this Rom (thank you to the team BTW).
It lags a bit and there are some bugs but it allows me to play with the latest versions of the apps (I love the latest version of gmail for example).
Give it a try if you haven't already. The Legend deserves a better end than as a mere MP3 player .

I'm also using JB on my Legend, but it is not really that stable (don't get me wrong, congrats to the developers, they did a great job), but it just feels too "heavy" on the phone. My biggest problem was the low amount of internal memory - yes, i know you can create a partition on the sd card, but i've never managed to accomplish it. Tried everything, just wouldn't work. So I really can't use the latest app version, as i can have about three apps installed at a time xD
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. The app that launches 10 sec after you put your finger on it...
For the internal storage, I use Link2SD, which actually works pretty well. When I check, it tells me that I got something like 280MB in use and still have 70MB free.
I just created like you said a second partition (using a soft [named Mini-Tool if I remember correctly] in Windows while my phone was plugged in USB) and then using this second partition to install my apps.
Are you interested in trying again ? You have another phone but, anyway...
I've been part of legend community for about 2 years now, never got into full blown deving, rather doing relatively small mods, tweeks and stuff for personal use only (read, cutting my teeth with android).
Activity in legend has unfortunately died over the past 3-6 months and I haven't seen much from our last major Dev zeubea for long time, so unless there is a skilled Dev equal or better than zeubea out there that loves the HTC legend, its not going to happen. Even then given that jb version never really got finished to stable version, I very much doubt KitKat would come anywhere near the level that jb reached simply due to lack of source code for the required harware drivers...
Ya never know your luck in a big city...

Well, let's hope such a developer exists than...
KK has been ported to the HTC Desire so there's hope
and sorry to hijack, but is anyone willing to test some gapps? Would be appreciated, cheers!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47101145&postcount=204
Ah cool! That's indeed a good news!
Thanks for the info.
KK was said to be optimized for devices with 512 MB+ RAM via Project Svelte. The Legend unfortunately doesn't even have that much.
But, I ask, why would everyone ideally want to have their Legends running Android 4.x? I don't understand why because although Gingerbread is now running on less than half of all Android devices, it was the last OS on our phone to run fluidly and with stability. With JB and above, Google's cramming more and more features into Google Play services, which really brings down the space the Legend has in its internal memory for apps. KK just won't run like Google intended to on this device. I just don't understand why people want the latest and greatest on a ~4 year old device. Maybe you have your reasons, and I'll respect that, but I can't think of any reason why personally.
It hurts to say, but with the Legend nearing four years since announcement, this phone isn't worth being developed for anymore. It wasn't that huge of a hit, like the original Desire or the Sensation. Therefore, it tends to be more forgotten. It doesn't have the computing power of neither of these devices, nor does it even come close to it, so while the aforementioned devices are slowly getting the bleeding edge, we'll be getting it slower, if at all.
It's a harsh reality, but if you want the best experience in Android possible, it's time to upgrade. ~Four years, that's around two two-year contracts. For Legend owners in Canada, your contract should have been up just this past summer.
This phone will always be a classic, guiding HTC through its brilliant design language with the HTC One flagship and its variants. Its legacy is shown on the devices that succeeded it. Unfortunately, I don't believe it has anything more to bring.
Hi Asovse1,
Thank you for your opinion.
You're right when you say that 4 years are an eternity for a smartphone but personally right now I can't afford a new device that would have for example the screen quality of the Legend (which has an amoled screen while even recent phone still use LCD). If I buy a new phone around 99 $ (my budget) I would have a screen with a poor resolution so the change is not worthy.
I have a JB Rom on my Legend and I can enjoy the last version of GMail for example that has really cool stuff. And this version of gmail runs rather smoothly on my phone, so why not ?
The Legend doesn't have 512MB RAM, for this reason he wasn't supposed to support ICS, but it worked, so while it works with the new version of Android, I will hope that a talented developer will build a Rom for this fantastic phone .
Or maybe I can wait just a few days ans see what the Moto G has to offer...
Cheers.
Hear hear, someone in the same boat as myself. Still using my Legend for daily use. I am on CM7.2 stable. Only GPS is not reliable. Tried a lot higher roms, never worked out well.
I am looking into importing a Chinese phone. Nice specs and an affordable price. Only risk is a broken phone within 2 years...

I have it on my Legend and use it daily without any problem. And the GPS works too, even if sometimes it needs some time to find itself, once it's done, it works perfectly.

Going to get a Z Ultra, a few questions as far as modding

I have no experience with flashing on sony devices but I have on just about everything else. Any particular version (google play or stock) that I should pick over the other for flashing roms and potentially (hopefully) marshmallow? Any stock version numbers I should make sure I am not on to avoid being unable to get past rooting security, etc? Thanks in advance!
I would recommend you to get the Non-Gpe version over the gpe version because there are more developers supporting ROM development for the Non-Gpe version. And also there are GPE ROMs for Non-Gpe version. So there is no specific need to get the GPE version.
Sent from my Xperia Z Ultra C6802
Also, be sure to get one with an unlockable bootloader, or else you're screwed, so you should pretty much stay away from carrier version of it. Gaining root on an unlocked bootloader isn't an issue. Just flash or hootboot a kernel with recovery (since Sony devices do not have an integrated recovery), and flash SuperSU. That's it.
Other than that, nothing particular you should look out for. The GPe version might get 6.0 soon (we have no idea if it'll actually get upgraded to 6.0), and we'll be able to easily port it over to our regular Ultra. There are also AOSP 6.0 builds out there, but they are not daily driver material yet.
Ive flashed, rooted and romed a ton to. I just recently got the z ultra. To me its hands down the best device ive owned. Ive had htc,note,note2,3,and 4,lg g3 and 4,tablets of the same above....z ultra is just as snappy. That being said, the cons are,its kinda fragile, dont stick it in your back pocket then jump in a car/truck. Well, not fragile,huge..sweet display.
As far as flashing its definitely different. No stock recovery. Not to worry though, nut made a installer for pc that will flash duel recoveries philz touch/twrp. And installs SU. Like the ever helpful kloas said dont buy a carrier locked device. Att,verizon,T-mobile. International version, bought from Amazon or the like. Sony allows bootloader unlocking. Devs also made a nifty lil tool for that. It wont come unlocked but its either allowed or not. This can be found within the dialer. You wont be disappointed with the phone. Even if u did get a locked bootloader one,its still able to gain root and flash roms. Im sticking with the z ultra till the price drops on the nexus 6. Good luck

Just ordered mine. C6833 off amazon. Pretty excited for it to show up. I had the nexus 6 and was never really satisfied with its performance. Then I got a lumia 1520 for kicks, loved the size, and wanted something equally big or bigger in android. I really like the stock dpi of the non-gpe version. About time a manufacturer realizes were not buying bigger phones to have the same screen real estate, just bigger. I want more space, more icons, more content.

ZU deff has that. The nexus 6 was the phone i wanted. Ended up with this giant. And love it. When you first get the phone there tools that do all the work for you. Like, backing up TA. Gaining root and at the same time installs 2 recoveries. Theres a tool for unlocking the bootloader as well as flashing. Root, recovery and unlocked BL. All u need!!!!\m/
Out of the box the Nexus 6 looks like its made for your grandfather to use. 4 Icons wide on the desktop, and everything super big. Changing the DPI on it is a must. I ran mine at 460, which bumped the google launcher up to 6 icons, wide.

Questions before buying unlocked phone

Hi,
I'm looking into buying a Z5 Compact unlocked since I don't want something 5 inches or bigger.
I'm hoping to not install custom roms, at least not until Sony stops supporting it.
I've got a few questions :
Will I be able to get the stock rom updates from Sony or manually install them (without unlocking the bootloader)? My carrier doesn't sell the Z5 or Z5 Compact so I doubt I will receive updates from it.
I have read a few threads that makes me worried about the phone. People seems to say it's sluggish and the camera app takes a while to start. Is it working better on the latest stock rom?
Is the stock rom good or should I really look into flashing a custom rom?
Would you guys recommend another Android phone? I would like a compact phone that can last me for a good 3 years, maybe a little more. Right now I own a Nexus 4 that is a little over 3 years old and while it still working rather well it is starting to show signs of its age (like the battery that doesn't last for very long anymore and the phone sometimes struggle running the latest games...)
Thanks
