I hope it's almost completed so we can start flashing some ROMs
I've never built a CWM binary before (CWM integration has been done my someone else on every other device I've developed for) and it requires a full CyanogenMod source tree - mine got corrupted so I lost a few hours doing a full resync.
CWM integration is a poorly documented black art - especially on Samsung devices.
I've got something compiling now, maybe 10% chance it works. If it doesn't I won't be touching it again until sometime this week, as a friend of mine is arriving in town in about an hour to visit.
Edit: It booted, but it acted like the VolUp key was stuck (just kept looping up through the menus) and it spewed a ton of errors
Edit 2: Somehow it's treating side-to-side tilt as up/down, and I need to move recovery.fstab somewhere else...
Right now I have it compiled and not spewing errors,however:
Our accelerometer spams /dev/input/event1 with a lot of crap. CWM treats this spam as keypresses, making CWM unusable. I need to figure out how to filter out event1 keycode input to get anything workable.
This is really interesting, please keep us posted! I'm really looking forward to a good custom ROM for my Galaxy 5
Atleast we got a good kernel already :d
Im using rj kernel for sgp 5.0, and its working fine. The games who had some lags after some time playing are runing smooth so far.
Rumirand and I are close - we probably would have it if I didn't have such a busy week.
His beta has a few issues from the looks if it - but he fixed the problems I had and I think my next github push will have fixes for his.
@Entropy512 - Thanks a ton for you efforts! Really looking forward to this.

That's the open-source philosophy.
With r7 kernel, you can do full Nandroid backup and restore (system, data, cache and dbdata). There are issues yet, but hopefully will be fixed soon.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but this thread seems relevant, and I'd like to not make another thread for just the same thing.
QUOTE: "What's the status on CWM development for 5.0?"
What device exactly is this referring to?
I'm assuming this refers to the Samsung galaxy player 5.0?
CWM, that is clockwork mod?
Would the person coding this be connected with ROM Manager?
I read someone was working on a CWM for Samsung 5.0 and they seemed to be close to an answer or something...
I was wondering if you were affiliated with ROM Manager in some way and the clockwork mod recovery and its device list...

ClockworkMod Recovery comes from the same guy who maintains ROM Manager, but they are NOT the same thing.
CWM's source code is published, so people can port CWM without Koush's involvement. Which is what rumirand and I did - we have CWM 5.0.2.7 working on the USA and International Galaxy Player 5.0 units at this point. (You necroed an outdated thread, we've had CWM working for a while now.) For CWM on a USA version, install my kernel, for CWM on an International unit, install his.
Thanks but I'm having problems.
Entropy, I have your Kernel installed and I can boot into the CWM-based recovery but ROM Manager doesn't recognize that I have CWM installed and won't let me do anything. Does this happen to you too?
I have really been having a HELL of a time trying to do things with this since support for this device is so scarce. I couldn't find anything about Clockwork Mod for this device anywhere. I searched for hours and kept hearing people referencing the xda developers site so I decided to look here and I installed your kernel hoping it would help and it does. But ROM Manager still doesn't recognize that CWM is installed and tells me to install it and gives me a list of phones which my device is not on and doesn't let me do anything until I install a version of CWM.
So is there an official port for CWM available that ROM Manager will recognize or is there only the ports contained in your and your friends kernels??

I am now loving CM7, running great with Glitch's kernel, and enjoying learning the nuances and differences in the phone now.
I am pleased that we can do nightlies and such via Rom Manager, but there is some confusion in my mind with regard to using Rom Manager to do much of anything right now.
It seems from all my reading and experimenting that we have very specific versions of CWM for use with our various kernels and roms. It is also clear that we are not to use the three finger salute to get into CWM - and I have not tried to do so due to being told not to - only get threre from ADB or the power menu (reboot>recovery)
But if I try to use Rom Manaver to even look around, it states that I need to have CWM installed to use the features. But as I understand it, I do have CWM installed, and Rom Manager is unaware of that fact...
So - my question (long way to get there, I know, sorry, I am long winded) is do we essentially have 2 CWM's on phone now? One that is accessed from the three finger salute and will not play with CM7, and another from the power menu or ADB that does play with CM7?
Is it safe to let Rom Manager install its own version and still have access to the 'correct' version for US (meaning Fascinate users, not all CM7 users...) to use in CM7?
I'm guessing this is like when people had to apply update.zip from stock recovery, but would love to clarify the confusion in my head - I can;t be the only thick skull-ed user out here wondering about this...
A question I now have as well since I just installed CM7. Rom Manager shows no clockwork mod recovery installed, then when prompted asks for either Captivate MTD, Vibrant MTD or Galaxy Si9000 mtd.
I only have the 3 finger recovery or ask it to reboot via Rom Manager. I miss the long press of the power button to give me all those choices I used to have.

Rom manager is completely useless to us until nightlies start. You can use it to fix permissions but that's about it. Rom manager recognizes our kernel as the mtd kernel and the captivate, vibrant and galaxy s are the only mtd roms officially supported by RM. However, very soon, you will see fascinatemtd added to that list. Go ahead and use RM flash clockworkmod recovery. Even though you flash it in RM, it will use the recovery that you are already using.....so nothing to worry about.

Thanks. Just learned from a user on another forum that hitting reboot in the power menu gives a submenu of recovery and reboot. So now I no longer have to depend on the 3 fingers. Looking forward to the ROM manager update to allow us nightlies.

Team Win Recovery Project 2.3, or twrp2 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. It’s a fully touch driven user interface – no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.
Phone look:
Tablet look:
CHANGELOG for 2.3.1.0:
-Unmount system after boot to prevent some status 7 symlink failed errors on zip install
-USB Mass Storage code improvements
-Better handling of mounting storage during boot for some devices
-Fixed a problem with sizes of images (boot & recovery) after resetting defaults
-Fixed size errors during backup for some devices on recovery, etc.
-Fixed a problem with restoring backups when multiple archives were present
CHANGELOG for 2.3.0.0:
-Rebased onto AOSP Jelly Bean source code
-Rewrote backup, restore, wipe, and mount code in C++ classes for easier maintenance going forward
NOTE: backups from prior versions of TWRP are still compatible with 2.3
-ADB sideload functionality from AOSP is included in 2.3, see this link for more info
-Re-wrote fix permissions entirely in C++ and runs in a few seconds instead of a few minutes (thanks to bigbiff)
-Improvements to zip finding in OpenRecoveryScript (should be a lot fewer GooManager automation issues)
-Faster boot times
-Added charging indicator while in recovery (only updates once every 60 seconds)
While this update may not bring a host of new must-have features, this update is a significant re-write of much of the core TWRP code. AOSP Jelly Bean recovery source moved to mostly C++ code and now all of the "TWRP" code is fully rewritten into C++ as well. Now that we've laid this groundwork, we're in a much better position to pull in future AOSP recovery updates as well as implementing more great new features.
Since TWRP 2.3 is based on AOSP jelly bean sources, TWRP now uses recovery API 3 instead of 2. Some zips may no longer work if the developer is using an out-of-date update-binary. This API change should not be a problem on newer devices, but older devices will probably encounter several zips that need to be updated. If needed, you can try using this update-binary that was compiled with current sources. It goes in your zip file in the META-INF/com/google/android folder.

I will warn you all to use care with this, it does not play well with other recoveries and roms, and sometimes even with Odin. I used it a lot trying to test things for steve and we decided to put it on the back burner, it is cool but causes trouble sometimes. Basically, it's awesome to use and has lots of handy features (zip queue ftw) but try not to flash anything with it if you aren't near a computer that you can Odin with just in case.

Thanks for the heads up. I did go ahead and flash to play around with it. You are right. There are a bug or two in there. Is there a easy way to get the reg cwm back on like Odin or flashing, or do I need to Odin back to stock first. Its no biggy, just didn't want to waste time when I get home tonight. It is very responsive and easy to navigate though and looks very promising
edit:so odin back to stock and then restore is the way to go. I still like it a lot either way.

yeah it changes some boot stuff and tries to reinject itself when you flash kernels. Which is handy if you want it but if you don't it causes problems. I was able to flash a glitch kernel from twrp but then it would just keep rebooting to glitch (cwm) recovery as though I had done three finger reboot. I flashed cm7 which put me back on blue older cwm5 and after flashing it again the phone booted so then I flashed back to ics.

It is really a 50/50 as to which way to go, a bunch of flashing or a bunch of Odin and then restore. Time difference is not to much. Were you able to do any backups and restores with it. I didn't have time to try that out yet. I also didn't have time to check to see if the problems made the bug report or not

Things I would like tested before I include it in AOKP.
1) data wipe. You can flash the ROM again boot and if all is well go back and restore.
2) flash the ROM or Efpophis kernel and tell me what recovery you have. It should be blue or red not twrp.
If those are good I'll look into including it.

Stephen, I have not tried those due to time. I can tell you I tried flashing the cwm fixed for cm7 twice and I still remained on twrp. I tried once with the injection button checked and once with it unchecked. Same result but no boot loop issues at all from that or any other flashing. This recovery is a tricky one for sure. When I get more time I will try some of your requests. I have limited time at my home computer lately because of work and studying for a test for work.

How did you flash the CWM CM7? If you (or the zip) used flash_image, then you might need to use erase_image first. flash_image checks the first 2KB of the image against what's already in boot. If it matches then it refuses to flash. The 2KB approach works fine for "normal" Android kernels because the first 2KB contains a "unique signature" but it doesn't always work well for Samsung SGS1 kernels because they are packed differently. I've found that I sometimes had to use erase_image in order to get flash_image to work. I've thought about submitting a patch to CM to fix this issue but haven't gotten around to it yet.
TWRP has been tested on the Epic 4G here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622947
And there's a zip here that should re-inject CWM. It would need to be modified slightly to work with the Fascinate, but someone could use this as a base if they wanted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651012
I think most of the issues that you'll experience will be due to the "injection process". If your kernel or ROM developer already includes TWRP in their builds then you don't need to try to reinject TWRP every time and we do make it optional. The recovery itself should be pretty solid because we use the same code across all devices (except for the optional injection code) so there's nothing that's specific to the SGS1 devices. Also, for the record, because sk8 loaned me his Fascinate, I was able to add /datadata support to TWRP, so that issue gone now too.
If you do run into any issues, please let me know. It's best to PM me, submit a bug report on github, or catch me in #twrp on Freenode. With over 20 devices to support I can't frequent the threads on the forums or I won't get any coding done.

ill fershur test this after it gets outta alpha stage, i dont wanna screw up my phone
Okay so far I'm loving this recovery, still have more testing, but I'm insanely impressed!
~~~~There is no spoon~~~~
After serious testing on this recovery last night I have come to the following conclusions:
1 This is the ONLY recovery that will let me backup/restore my device correctly on this phone
2 USB Mount doesn't seem to work, but if I had to trade USB Mount for working backups it is NOT a hard choice.
3 This recovery is one of the simplest to use and most functional recoveries I have used on ANY phone
4 This recovery is extremely responsive, full featured and beautiful to look at with the theme I have on it. Oh yeah, did I mention you can THEME THE RECOVERY?!?! WIN!
5 Any more bacon packed in this package would cause massive coronary problems.
6 If you are scared to try it, don't be. I am using ONLY TWRP recovery from this point on. I'm sold.
So if any of you are on the edge about this recovery, take the plunge. I promise you will not regret it.
my only problem is that i cant restore my CWM backups with TWRP
This is the first time I rooted my phone and I used step 6 on this link in your forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070 . Everything went fine but I then downloaded rom manager and when I select flash clockworkmod it only gives me the choice of choosing the samsung epic4g or the samsung galaxyS i9000. It does not give me the option of choosing the fascinate. I selected the i9000 but stopped there because I figured that I should try to fix this situation and be able to select the fascinate, before I move foward. Please help me move foward so I will be able to put a rom on my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
rom manager is useless for the fascinate...
I also ran into this issue. If your CWM is not "sticky" (it goes to System Recovery <3e> when you reboot recovery), you must flash the appropriate version of CWM with ODIN before a ROM flash. (CWM ALL.tar for bml roms [anything that is not cm7, MIUI, or ICS] or cwm4_fixed_for_cm7.tar for MTD ROM's [cm7, MIUI, or ICS])
But if that's the case, why does Koushik make a ROM for the fascinate and have it available on his site?
(Does the Epic4G simply represent all CDMA phones, and the i9000 GSM? Don't see why that would matter anyway tho)
(I can't post a direct &#% link yet, but it's on his website.
This makes absolutely no sense!? He's got ROMs up there for just about every Android phone on the market, all to be used with ROM Manager.
I wanted to install it via Odin but naturally that would be too simple: it's a zip file and Odin won't recognize anything but tar and 2 others formats.
You can flash any .zip ROM with CWM. There's no need for ROM Manager. BTW, you can post a link if you uncheck "parse links in text automatically."
all you need to do is boot into cwm recovery via the power menu and flash away. the problem with rom manager on the fascinate is getting into the right recovery...causes more problems than its worth on this device. make sense yet? probably not since you have not been down this road yet, but many of us have. so take the advice given or dont and learn the hard way.
Honestly, I am trying to take the advice given but not all of it fit my situation.
I'm definitely something of a noob to Android (Not to linux or IT though). I've had my phone for all of a month and rooted it only days ago.
It's all starting to come together, finally. It's tricky for a noob because there are so many different versions of the phone hardware, versions of Android, this or that kernel that only works with these ROMs, old/newer versions of those, old posts and advice, newer posts with adjusted advice.. etc.. It's been a week long crash course!
Anyhoo, I couldn't flash/upgrade CWM because it didn't stick from the original Odin install. When I rebooted, I'd always return to the stock <3e> recovery. Even after two more installs of CWM via Odin.
I used the cwm-recovery-all.tar in your guide, Droidstyle. (great job BTW)
I followed the directions in Section 6 to the letter. I even printed it out and highlighted key sections.
So you see, I was in a catch-22; I needed CWM to flash CWM? Odin was my only option at that point.
Then I read on another thread here about renaming the /system/recovery-from-boot.p script, and installing CWM once more.
That worked, so now I can finally boot into CWM recovery like a happy man. (I also tried a more specific version of CWM for good measure: cwm4-bml-i500.tar, not really sure if that made a difference)
So I made my first real nandroid backup last night.
Next on my list is a new kernel. Still deciding between KGB, lean, and whatever else is out there.
I still don't get the whole mess with ROM Manager though. I agree with you, DS, I just don't get why he'd have zips for every phone under the sun but his own app doesn't seem to allow them to be used. It's bizarre. The latest reviews on the market are not flattering either.
You are on the Samsung Fascinate. If it is Verizon then it is model number i500. If it doesnt say Fascinate or i500 it isn't for your device and you don't need to worry about it. If you flash something that isn't stated as being for the i500 or VERIZON Fascinate then you will have a lovely new temporary paper weight.
You couldn't have followed it to the letter because it is a well known fact that if you boot up with a stock kernel still flashed it will replace your recovery. Droidstyle certainly knows this and certainly accounted for it in his guide. So, you need to either boot directly into CWM or flash a non-stock kernel prior to rebooting the phone.
We already talked about the kernel situation. Consider Geewiz if you want something thats all-in-one and pretty much impossible to mess up. KGB is good. Leankernel always gave me the best battery life but YMMV.
I still don't get the whole mess with ROM Manager though. I agree with you, DS, I just don't get why he'd have zips for every phone under the sun but his own app doesn't seem to allow them to be used. It's bizarre. The latest reviews on the market are not flattering either.
He showed no interest in helping the devs here get ROM manager working (again) on the phone. If you gave him money, blame him for not providing the support and resources to get it working on this phone. Some people are umm...."lacking in people skills."
Oh, and as great as the Gingerbread ROMs are...the mtd ICS roms blow them out of the water
Hi all
ok so i'm a bit nervous writing this expecting all manner of attack in that i may be posting something that's been posted before lol, i've been working on this phone from start to finish about 9 hours, over two days..... i've googled just about every combination of words to do with the title and everything in between but nothing seems to come close to what i actually need to do as nothing works
i have an LG Optimus 2x / p990, it had ICS on it but was far too slow to handle this, it needs something a bit less hardware intensive to run smoothly, so i went ahead an found cyanogenmod stable ...... 7.2 i installed sdk after an hour of finding out how it works i finally got adb and fastboot working, i then needed this, that, this, that, etc etc etc.....
to cut a 9 hour story short, i've managed to get myself to the point where i wiped the phone of everything but CWM partioned for ics via the AIO software but CWM will not let me install any ROM onto the phone. to be more precise it says i have installed CM 7.2 successfully! (i've tried this via the CWM via external SD card and sideload) i reboot the phone it's as if i've never done a thing, no trace or suggestion i've even attempted it on the internal card... nothing
i'm at the point now where i'm quite happy to just have my phone back now and install ICS 404 but can't use the LG kdz install software as the pc doesn't see the phone as an LG p990 because it's recovery and i can only get it to come up as internal and external memory cards
i'm not really a noob when it comes to tech stuff but this little phone has me stumped.... please, i'm begging you, help me any operating system that can get my phone working will do, preferably the CM 7.2 if not back to ICS 404?
and i know, i know i should have backed up but i had no idea it could be so complicated just to put an OS on a tiny computer
ETA i've tried that exitrecovery.zip thing and it did nothing :/
It's quite simple
Try to reset and unroot/re-lock the phone then unlock and root, then what you need to do is get ROM Manager and get the Clockwork Recovery and the version that supports your device, although you might need to hook up your phone to your computer for the process to work.
Also put back in ICS 4.0.4 when unrooted and re-locked again like stock and make sure it's the stock file for your phone.
And after you got ROM Manger and the Clockwork Recovery
Then just in Clockwork wipe out all data on the device and don't do a factory reset in Android just with clockwork and delete everything that was made on that phone then install CyanogenMod.
After that it will seem to take a long time or just a while to boot up and then it boots faster then the original ROM.
If you have Clockwork Recovery just wipe out all the data while it's still in there and you should be set.
When it was my first time putting in CyanogenMod it was 10.1 RC1 on my Nexus 7 and it didn't work and forever bootlooped, and that was because i forgot to wipe the device. Then after going into Recovery with Clockwork I deleted all the data of my tablet and it worked but took 5 mins. to boot up which is nomal.
And if Clockwork doesn't work, do the same with TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and download that which can be found here teamw.in/project/twrp
If you don't want to get ROM Manager or that one isn't working then try this website to get Clockwork because it has the whole list of devices and I recommend downloading from the website instead of their app. clockworkmod.com/rommanager
cheers for that, i've tried all of the above still to no avail, having a think about it the phone is partioned for ics, i'm trying to install CM 7.2 which as i understand isn't ICS so.... maybe the error is that it's a different partioning sequence/setup i'm gonna go for CM 10.1 and see if that makes a difference.
to add i'm not sure why everyone rants and raves about CWM, TWRP seems much more complete and advanced do you (or anyone else) know the main differences?
TWRP has a completely touch driven interface that is 100% themeable, while CWM has a touch version and non-touch version. Also TWRP has a built in file manger and terminal emulator where as CWM does not. A lot of people like TWRP because it provides a lot of good features with a simple and straightforward yet powerful user interface. I would recommend taking a look at this guide if you want more information on the differences between the two http://www.droidiser.com/2013/04/twrp-vs-clockworkmod-recovery.html?m=1.
ok i managed to do it i can't remember exactly how but some good links and info for anyone who stumbles across this in need of help
i went for cyanogenmod 10.1 to make this work i used this AIO tool - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020737
repartioned with OLD partion layout and BL
installed TWRP (included in the aio)
if you need to reinstall the google play store make sure you have right version if you flash it and get "unfortunately setup wizard has stopped" repeatedly you have the wrong version see this link for which one you need http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Gapps
obviously make sure you have adb and fastboot setup and drivers too.... it's a long process installing the entire sdk, personally for flashing this once and most definately not inclined to do it again i'd go with just the adb and fastboot rather than the whole sdk
also i found a keyboard error with 10.1 where i'd type 1,2 or 3 characters and the keyboard would minmise not sure if there's a proper fix (i found one thing where you disable the autocorrect but didn't want to do that) so i decided to download and install hackers keyboad which is based on the gingerbread keyboad and is much better and comes with full features and integrates nicely
coupled with the info above from YoyoscratchMC and you should be in the field
good luck to all i was ready to jump out my window with my phone first so i could land as hard as possible on it last night but i got there in the end lol
Hello everyone.
As the title says I recently got my hands on a Samsung Vibrant. I have it from a friend who just left the apartment we lived in together for 5 months as she didn't need it anymore. It currently has a MIUI ROM on it and I'd like to change it to sada23's unofficial CM 11.0
The problem is however that my only previous experience with flashing ROM was with a Samsung Galaxy Chat when I slapped Jelly Bean on it which was only released in a few countries. So I went right ahead but found the amount of things I have to do overwhelming compared to when I just used ODIN on the old phone.
I'm trying to tell what the current status is of the phone and this is what I've been able to come up with so far. (also after googling what everything is and does lol)
- MIUI present so custom ROM install definitely possible
- When I booted into recovery mode I saw it has: "Semaphore CWM Recovery v6.0.1.9" (which I presume is outdated)
- BY default the MIUI ROM apparently has a superuser app (which lead me to think that the device is rooted), however everytime I try to use an app that requires root I encounter errors.
I just did a backup using the recovery mode with semaphore cause I saw this is usually a first step in all the guides I've read. However from here on out I am completely clueless on what to do because all the guides were so different from eachother and I have a feeling my phone is in a vague situation. (root/not rooted?)
So I was hoping someone here could point me into the right direction and help me get to CM from MIUI. Thank you in advance.
I'll be following this thread.. kinda in a similar situation. Although a bit worse. I had an old vibrant in a drawer from years back in mint condish!.. last thing I did was root and install recovery. Unfortunately I'm a stooge and without thinking threw a 4.4 rom zip on the phone.. booted to recovery and cleaned and tried to flash.. bottom line i'm in a bootloop now... and I gave up when odin wasn't detecting the phone.. I"ll figure that out eventually, but it would be great to just have a 4.4 Odin tar for a quick and painless install... or at least a tar from a 4.0 with root and recovery to make the 4.4 upgrade easy.
Also would be interested in knowing if the 4.4 roms work well.. Gps will be most important to me since I plan to use this as my jogging phone.
alrighty.. let's get this party started!
Edit - I think the best thing for you to do is odin back to stock then root install custom bootloader and then flash your new rom, I've heard that you can go straight to kk from stock but the guy who posted above me has problems because of that so I would try flashing an ICS ROM for the recovery first, and don't forget to make a nandroid backup
You can find all the files and programs you'll ever need here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982728 in NOOB_IN_NEED 'S ref thread
Hope I was of some help if I was hit the thanks button
