[Q] new Android & Xperia Mini pro user, what do i get/need, what to do?

I'm fairly new to the android seen with not much knowledge in this area at all i think the last time I played with a phone was a SE w810i when i flashed it :L, however i played a lot with a couple of iPod touches, jailbreaking them modding them etc.
So, i have no intentions of doing this whole ROOT thing to my phone YET but i will be when i have gotten used to the phone and explorered android enough to feel ok to ROOT it and explore and exploit my phone to my liking.
I do realise I could have took a smarter option when it came to buying an android but I always love SE phones so a combo of the two has me well chuffed....
so i'm just wondering
app wise
game wise
theme wise
accessory wise
I love them small addictive flash games like doodle jump, angry birds, i love my phones theme looking good/beautiful/awesome.
I love having lot's of wallpapers, abstract, carbon, matte and black mostly,
I love my music and SE's range of accessories
I love all those HTC widgets and the desire so any widgets that resemble them as much as possible would be much appreciated, for I.e. pre patched fancy widget that mimmicks the exact copy of HTC's weather widget clock, i have launcher pro plus for the messages, facebook and contact widgets, but are there others that mimmick HTC's interface almost exactly?
I love messing about with the cool camera effect apps
also what browser do you use on your android or Xperia?
You should find some extra info on http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Xperia_X10_Mini
Things I find very cool: Alarmdroid, led light, swiftp, terminal, busybox, sshd, original calendar, skype, gtalk.
Well done on your purchase, you already made the best first step by coming to XDA heaps of friendly helpful people on here.
I like "Beautiful Widgets" Clock and Weather widgets... you can download heaps of different Clocks and Weather icons.. (including HTC Sense style clocks)
Vignette is the best Image effects program I have found (funky old camera effects and frames)
Smartkeyboard Pro is a pretty good text input option
Z4root for rooting (really simple one click application to gain root) when your ready for that.. go on! don't be scared!
then.. Titanium Backup, Root explorer.. etc
You have already discovered Launcher Pro, thats a good step.. not as easy to theme as ADW Launcher but still the Home screen of choice by most people because of its speed and Battery usage. (I use Launcher Pro plus too)
The Music player on the X10mini/pro is a bit crap.. there are some good ones out there, I use Meridian but Cube (3) is also pretty cool, I am sure there are others if you look around.
And a few good games..
Angry Birds (of course)
Abduction
Fruit Ninja
Monkey Kick (simple but fun)
2 player Reactor is great if you want to play with your partner or friends when your bored.
too many to list but thats a start for you..
Hope that helps and welcome to the X10mini/pro threads! happy reading/playing.

Recomended Apps - XT720

I'm making this thread both to share what I feel are good apps and to discover other apps for myself. I have not installed Dexters 2.2 or rooted yet (though I intend to) so I'm not going to list anything that requires it, but feel free to do so yourself.
So:
Lockscreen: GOTO Lockscreen. I saw this a while back but never actually checked it out. It was featured on DroidLife today so I decided to check it out now and it's great. Great, elegant look to it, great functionality as well. I've been using WidgetLocker for ages and it doesn't compare. There were some issues at first but after rebooting everything seems to work perfectly for the most part(I saw someone mention this as well in the comments so I did it). It's also on sale right now. Might be a bit of a drain on battery.
HomeLauncher: LauncherPro (Plus). I love the look and functionality of this and most of all, the widgets (which are greatly enhanced by Signal's themes -that can be found in Android Themes section). Truth be told, ADW (/ADW EX) probably has more options and functionality at this time (and you can use Colorize Widgets app to replace LP widgets for free). For now ADW might be better, though I'm just waiting for LauncherPro rewrite to happen (going so slowly). GoLauncher as well is fantastic. As is Zeam. There are many great options right now (and so many more on the horizon).
Whatever the case, something that is crucial when using one of these (at least for me) is to select the option to "Keep in memory." I think all of the above have that option (not sure about Zeam). My biggest issue with launchers is that my screen always redraws itself so much (this is a problem with XT720 stock launcher as well), so I have to wait forever for my icons and widgets to load itself, which is really annoying. I've tried things to reduce it, but the only thing that ever got rid of it was to select that option. Now using LP with that option and no lags at all.
I also recommend getting home switcher for easy switching between launchers.
EDIT: SPB Shell 3D
Keyboard:
Stock XT720 keyboard isn't bad (for me). I tend to alternate between that and Swype. I prefer stock keyboard for use in landscape mode. Once I'm rooted I plan to install that app that lets you choose a keyboard for portrait mode (i.e that would be Swype for me) and another in landscape (stock).
EDIT: Stock Gingerbread keyboard
Music Player:
Stock is decent, but nothing special really. I do like the album cover flow in landscape mode though. I alternate between that and Connected music player, which is the ripped music player from the atrix and droid bionic I believe (I'm not sure where to get it since that thread has since been locked). Winamp is also pretty good. PowerAmp has a lot of features, but you get annoying popups after two weeks unless you buy the full version ($5). I'd love to know what others use.
Some apps specifically use stock music player so that's another reason I use stock. i.e. when using GoTo lockscreen, the lockscreen changes when you're playing music to give you music player controls, but only seems to do when using stock music player.
EDIT: Google Music/ PowerAmp
Browser:
Stock is not that great. Has that nice bookmark cover flow in landscape mode, but in terms of functionality there are better ones. I use Dolphin Browser HD now (blue theme). Best UI for browser out there currently imo. A lot of people seem to love Miren and Dolphin Browser mini, for reasons I can't understand (everyone says they are super fast but I never notice any difference on my already fast browser).
EDIT: Opera Mobile
Games:
Really loving Stupid Zombies right now, it's a lot of fun (though has slow loading times). Ninjump is great for quick little fun. Angry birds also remains fun, though repetitive. Would love to see what else runs great on XT720.
Customization/Widgets/:
Beautiful Widgets is great and has a huge range of themed clocks and toggles. The recently introduced "Super Clock" was a great improvement. So much customization with this. Colorize Widget is great if you're using something other than LauncherPro, Signals has themes for it also. Widgetsoid and MySettings, are great for quick access to settings.
Task Switching:
SwipePad is just phenomenal and has a great UI, I recommend you check it out if you don't have it already. Together with long press on home button, I have amazing task switching going on.
File Explorer:
File Explorer is a must for me on my XT720. It's how you can install APKs and browse your sdcard and everything and change things easily. ES File Explorer is great for that and has a nice UI.
There's more that I wanted to add I'm sure, but here's this for now. Feel free to share what apps you use on your XT720.
I really like Zeam mainly for the small footprint & speed, I've used LPP & the widgets are very cool. My preferred keyboard is SwiftKey, once you use it for a while the predictive text feature is really nice. I'm still using the stock browser, that along with ChromeMarks gives me access to all my desktop bookmarks. For music I've got MusicMod (Froyo) for the widgets & the MIUI music app. I'd also recommend SIMI Clock (Time, weather & battery level in 1 1x4 widget & a built in launcher) & SIMI folder widget. I also find SwiFTP very usefull, just fire up the FTP on the phone & copy files between the phone & my pc without a USB cable.
Lockscreen: default--dexter froyo
HomeLauncher: GoLauncherEX---no lags n a lot of options.....nice interface
Keyboard: swype---easy n handy
Music Player:winamp---no equalizer but fast n flexible
i ll recommend mixzing also.
Games:angry birds, world`s hardest game, fruit ninja, ninjump, soccerball, drop, pinball deluxe, brick breaker---all f em addictive
File Explorer:andrpzip, astro
Tools-- android assistant, set cpu---both help a lot in makin ure phone fast n unlaggy
Great post. I loved some of the suggestions.
Customization/Widgets/:
I use Sense Analog Clock. It gives me SD Storage, Internal Storage, Internal Memory, Battery Level and Temperature in one place. Edit: it gives me weather, time, lunar phase (even tough I don't use that info) and quick access to my alarms as well.
Music Player:
Because of the media scan bug, I've tested loads of music players. Most of the players based on folder navigation did not impress me. So I chose the simplest one for now: Gtunes. Once the media scan is back to business, I intend to come back to stock or winamp.
BTW, where do I get Connected music player?
Games:
Andoku is a must have for Sudoku lovers.
I'm starting to play Pocket Legends, but I don't see it getting very amusing in the near future...
Memory Trainer is nice if you wanna test yourself.
Misc:
Pulse - for news
Evernote - for note taking and journal
Gtasks - to synchronize my gmail tasks
AppMonster - to save my apps
Looking for:

Absolute system has many excellent tool, boot animation downloader included.
It's a paid app, but totally worth it Sherry, euh i mean Lucy .
I really like the functionality of "BusyMe (Lite)" which automatically set your ringer to vibrate (or: to quiet) during meetings on your Google Calendar and then return to normal afterwards.
No more hassle due to phone calls during meetings ;-))
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fernandodunn.android.busyme.lite
Taken quite a while for this thread to get any attention.
Some more apps:
Pulse
Speed X 3D
Afroid (XT720 light)
Apparatus
Cover Art Downloader
Androidify
Google+
SPB Time (I love this alarm clock though it's $6 as opposed to $2 when I bought it)
PowerAmp (really looking forward to the massive V2 update)

I had this problem too. Really annoying. The home screen would come up and the touch screen did nothing. I was finally able to get a different bootup screen, but I had to work through a couple before I found one that wouldn't have that problem. I'm currently using the one where the apple logo is displayed and then pulled off the screen by our favorite android sporting a red and white stripped suit.
I noticed a couple things while messing around with it:
1- the boot animation sounds never worked for me
2- If I tried copying over larger boot anims, I would run out of space, but the CLI never told me that, so only part would be copied. (I think this has to do with the memhack/cache tweak)
3- When the touch screen went out I would just use ADB to recopy the original bootanim, then restart and then touchscreen would work again. (Save you a recovery).
In the end, I had to put a smaller file size on there but it's better than that eyeball bootanim, that was freaking me out lol.
With Dexter's Froyo installed and Gingerbread theme upgrade
So:
Lockscreen:
See Music Player
HomeLauncher:
LauncherPro (Plus), Launcher7(I simply enjoy it for being slick, and its status bar, but with a black status bar from gingerbread I've no need for it anymore.)
Slidescreen, this is a beautiful launcher that can also be ran as an app overlaying your current launcher.
If you simply want information, details stats, this is the one for you
Slide screen is slick and its advertisement for the free version, is an add to get the paid version.
sidenote--Home Switcher for Froyo
Keyboard:
Better Keyboard 8
Music Player:
Cloud Skipper
Serves as both a very accessible player and has its own lock screen with full access to the player itself upon hitting the unlock key.
Browser:
Opera Mini
xScope
Games:
Fruit Slice (not my slice of pie but some may like it, ran well)
Glow Hockey (Great game, if it supports vs over wifi, then wow)
Hex Defense (Plays like defense Grid)
Ninja Dash
Ninjump
Pew Pew (was interesting, but a little awkward for me)
Return Zero (interesting racer, and not too taxing on the system either)
Speedx 3D
YooNinja
Customization:
Metamorph is what i use for themes at the moment. May change to something else later on.
File Explorer:
OI File manager
I love saving space, and OI looks simple and efficient and runs extremely smooth.
Media Player:
Mobo Player
Management:
1-Click Clear
Appkik
As for games and excess apps, the ones that can't be ran from SD i backup with Appkik for later use to free up memory and space on the phone.
@ OriginalLucy
I used the following two videos for switching the boot animation
Search youtube for:
ANDROID Boot Animation (How-To Change It)
CyanogenMod Boot Animation
Got it running to replace that really bad boot animation from Dexter's Froyo
Great rom but the Boot animation was driving me bonkers.
Hope this helps out.
An easy way to change your boot animations is set up a folder on your SD card named Boot Animations and put the zip in there. Then go into /system/media and copy the original and put it on your SD card in case something ever happens and you can replace it with the original. Take your new boot animation and just replace the one that is in /system/media and reboot.
Obviously make a back up before you do this b/c not all work well.
Also watch your size. While they do look cool, some take up a ton of space.
wondering why no one mentioned some of these:
- "LBE privacy guard" --> control & take away the rights of your apps, e.g. don't allow facebook to access your contacts or send SMS , in my opinion one of the best apps so far. only for rooted devices!
- "history eraser"
- for users in Germany: "Öffi" -> great app for public transport, in germany we call it "öffentliche Nahverkehrsmittel"
- SMS Backup & Restore
- Titanium Backup
- WhatsApp -> like SMS , but works via internet connection and sends messages via internet -> no costs for sms

General Apps Recommendation/Discussion

*This thread may seem really obvious in its generalities - but it could become a cool resource for both beginner android/atrix users (and maybe provide a helpful insight or tip to the veterans as well).
In this thread, recommend crucial apps you are running on your Atrix. Whether it is a great game/productivity app/something you just can't go without on a daily basis, post here and let everyone know what you think. I will try to categorize the posted app reviews/recommendations and post them alphabetically in the OP every day or so - this way hopefully we can help each other out with new stuff, and even give a general consensus on wise purchases (although small, everything adds up).
Post in the following format:
APPLICATION TITLE - DESCRIPTION/COMMENTS - LINK IF POSSIBLE
GAMES
Air Attack HD - is Award Winning next-generation top down air combat shooter with stunning 3D graphics alongside great audio, effects and awesome gameplay.

Angry Birds - The ultra-popular, launch-(angry)birds-at-pig-occupied-structures game. Easy to pick up for short amounts of time, or play it all day. Super colorful and fun.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rovio.angrybirds&feature=search_result
Angry Birds Seasons - Seasonally updated levels for Angry Birds (not an add on, it is a separate game).
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rovio.angrybirdsseasons&feature=search_result
Doodle Jump - Jump on platforms, using the accelerometer to guide Doodle past enemies while using fun tools... that sentence was longer than it should be. The game is that simple, but super fun.

Guerrilla Bob - Great cross-platform shooter.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.angrymobgames.guerrillabob&feature=search_result

Stupid Zombies - Stupid zombies are back and you are humanity's last hope to keep them brainless.
Those stupid zombies are back, and you are humanity's last hope to keep them brainless. But beware, ammo is limited so you will have to get crafty and use the straight bullets, grenades, split- and buckshots in the most effective way possible to survive the 300 levels. One man, one shotgun and lots of stupid zombies. Now with OpenFeint leaderboards!

Word Fued - A fun multiplayer word game. Who can make the highest scoring words? (Random boards and overall more fun than Words with Friends - Play against me, my username is Mustang302LX)
http://market.android.com/details?id...=search_result
Words With Friends - Play scrabble against friends, or random people. Turn based, push notifications let you know when it is your turn. Can be really fun and laid-back, or extremely frustrating (I have yet to beat my girlfriend, let alone lose to her by LESS than 100 points).

FINANCE
Bank of America – Paired up with Mint.com app, there’s nothing you can’t do on the fly.

Mint.com – Awesome personal finance App. Set up budgets, view balances and get alerts. Really essential if you need to manage your money.

KEYBOARDS
Keyboard From Android 2.3+ (Gingerbread Keyboard) - Even with the release of the Gingerblur Beta that incorporates the Gingerbread keyboard - I keep coming back to this one. This keyboard is identical to the actual Gingerbread keyboard, but allows for the keyboard to be configured to your liking (key height, row spacing etc.) which can result in a much larger, easier to type keyboard. There is also a free version, but the free version does not allow key customization. Also comes with different themes. Best keyboard IMO.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.moo.android.inputmethod.latin&feature=search_result
Free Version:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.moo.android.inputmethod.latin.free&feature=search_result
Smart Keyboard Pro - The most options, self calibration, HIDE THE SMILEY KEY and gesture support. Best keyboard out now. Better IMO than Gingerbread keyboard and Swiftkey.
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.cdeguet.smartkeyboardpro&feature=search_result
Swiftkey - Keyboard that learns from you and attempts to predict whole words and sentences. Works really well, if the whole prediction thing is your thing. I still prefer to tap things out manually, but this certainly gave the Gingerbread keyboard a run for its money. Would be much better if you could resize the keys - but is still definitely worth a try.

Free Version:

LAUNCHERS
ADW Ex - My personal favorite launcher just because it's quite customizable, sizeable widgets, sizeable grid size, customizable app drawer, hidden dockbar etc.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/adwlaunc...freak.launcher
Launcher Pro – Reliable, smooth, fast. Lots of customization options and transition effects work flawlessly on the Atrix. Also, Launcher Pro Plus (the paid version) has its own sense-like widgets.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fede.launcher&feature=search_result
NEWS & MAGAZINES
Pulse News Reader - Best/prettiest news reader.
https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result
PRODUCTIVITY
Colornote Notepad – “Color Note is a notepad app which give you a better note editing experience. Color Note is a simple notepad app. It give you a quick and simple notepad editing experience when you write note, email, message, shopping lists and todo lists.”

Jorte - "Jorte is a personal organizer application designed to be practical...Our objective was to create an app with the look and feel of real paper personal organizer with an appealing appearance and easy practical use."
https://market.android.com/details?id=jp.co.johospace.jorte&feature=search_result
SOCIAL

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dropbox.android&feature=search_result
Elixir - Elixir is a system information application with highly configurable widgets
https://market.android.com/details?id=bt.android.elixir
Green Power Premium - Perhaps the most useful application/utility on my phone right now. Turns off data connection for a user set interval when the phone is locked. Voice and text messages are unaffected. What results is significant battery savings. Not only can you set off/on, you can set thresholds for signals i.e. bad signal = no connect to data. I'm getting about 1.5 DAYS of use with my phone. Bewae though, problems arise with 3rd party launchers. I'm running the Gingerblur and it is flawless right now.

Couple questions for you pros:
1. do you guys use a task manager type app for managing running apps? ...some apps i have kind of start from scratch if i log back in after leaving it..so would be nice to have an app mgr i think?
2. I have a gas app for prices, but would love to see something integrated into the google maps app so its a one stop shop...any way to do that? also the nav is great but the voice is BLEH...any way to sub it?
3. Is tapatalk worth the purchase..it's only a couple bucks but i haven't actually paid for any apps yet...i guess its hard to buy an app before you've even tried it. i think all apps should offer at least a short free trial, even if its one day

3. Is tapatalk worth the purchase..it's only a couple bucks but i haven't actually paid for any apps yet...i guess its hard to buy an app before you've even tried it. i think all apps should offer at least a short free trial, even if its one day

Regarding question #1, the Atrix has a built in Task Manager that also has an auto-end feature.
What's a good note-taking app?
Edit: found a nice one with no ads.

PLZ STICKY ME! General Apps Recommendation/Discussion

I'm officially restarting this thread and taking it over and updating it from now on. It's a wonderful resource and we should really try to get it stickied, please contact Mr. Clown as he has not responded to me yet. Any suggestions? Please to make! Big thanks to acPIZZA for starting the OP.

Those stupid zombies are back, and you are humanity's last hope to keep them brainless. But beware, ammo is limited so you will have to get crafty and use the straight bullets, grenades, split- and buckshots in the most effective way possible to survive the 300 levels. One man, one shotgun and lots of stupid zombies. Now with OpenFeint leaderboards!

Widgetsoid - Customizable power options widget with A LOT of options not to mention it's FREE!

Reserved for later
I've been using "Battery Monitor Free" by Simmo and it's been working quite well. I like the widget better than Circle Battery as it shows temperature and voltage as well. Just a personal preference deal though probably, both show 1% increments and seem to be accurate in doing so.
Also, I would like to warn anyone installing via Appbrain, the Appbrain market application has some sort of weird leak so that it accounts for 15% of battery loss. It also will constantly restart itself if ended, so there really is no option besides an uninstall unless you like shorter battery life.
If you really want to have a game list, you probably want another topic, but regardless you should at least include Fruit Ninja ^^
Alchemy is another fun little game.
In terms of communication apps:
imo beta is a great mass-IM application, having MSN, Skype, Facebook, GChat, etc support. However, it is still beta so there are occasionally bugs. I would recommend it though if you like to use Skype along with other protocols, as it is the only IM app that I've found to also support Skype.
eBuddy is also nice, having the same tab layout and such, though it doesn't have Skype support. It's more stable at the moment than the beta imo release however. I use it as a backup.
setCPU is one of the obvious must-have root apps, being that you can underclock for battery saving whether you're doing simple tasks or just have your screen off.
Evernote is a must-have notetaking app, with syncing to your desktop application and website, image and voice notes, and some nice sharing features.
Weatherbug is a nice weather app, it has a good GUI and nice notification temperature deal. Does not have any noticeable effect on battery life in my experience. I've heard some negative things about the paid version however, so I would watch out.
Just a few.
None of the links ending with "=search_result" work.

[Q] utility apps for cynogen mod 7 TP

Hi,
I picked up a touchpad when HP held their second firesale. I loaded Android shortly after and have been running Alpha 3.5.
I would like some feedback on what are some must have utility apps for this combination of hardware and software.
So far I have AVG anti-virus, android pro widgets, and adw free launcher. I have downloaded CPU master free but haven't turned it on yet.
What are some other utilities you consideration must have.
Thanks,
Rick
hmmm...depends what sort of apps you are after, quick office, adobe reader enhanced email, evernote & skitch for the productivity stuff.
android pro widgets is a good one allows you good selection of widgets to cover the large screen (except email)
if you're after a nice clock HD widgets works well.
Choice (the free will android offers ) is yours pretty much
My suggestions:
Airdroid for quick access to the Touchpad.
Rom Toolbox and/or Titanium Backup in case you need it.
SetCPU is another option instead of CPU master free.
File Expert is often helpful
Quick Settings for turning options.
bye the way: Quite a number of apps and games are available and are really worth.
You wil find it on the market or also at getjar (m.getjar.com)
Thank you both for the replies. My original post was about utilities for the OS and software. Having said that, I'm looking for all good app recommendations.
I have installed several highly praised apps like Evernote, Google Maps, etc.
I was wondering if I should get launcher pro. I'm not exactly sure what a launcher does. Will it include new widgets? Does it also add the functionality to change icons?
Again, appreciate all the suggestions and welcome more.
Rick
The launcher is really the interface you see and use to launch apps. I haven't used launcher pro lately and last time I used it, it was not being updated. I think most people either use the default launcher, ADW, or Go launcher. There isn't much harm installing each and trying it other that the time invested setting up the screens. Every time you hit the home button, it will ask which launcher you want to use. When you find one you like, check make default and uninstall the others.

Are you saying a anti-virus app is not needed or there is a better one out there?

Its not needed.
What about Advanced Task Killer. That is not needed either, right?
I would suggest (in addition to what you have, thought I agree you don't need AVG):
root explorer (file browser with root access and built in text editor)
HashDroid (md5 checker to doublecheck downloads were successful)
amazon market (free app a day, can't go wrong with that)
mClock (fully customizable clock widget)

Absolutely not. Task killers work against how android works, and will actually use more battery.

Not exactly true, there ARE Android viruses (at least, by most people's definition of virus... there are no true viruses but the same could be said for Windows)
However, they're far and few, and you can only really get one if you carelessly install something without knowing what it is. The Android Market shows you application permissions needed before installing for that very reason, for example if a live wallpaper needs to read your contact info then something is wrong.
File Expert -->Powerful File Manager/WIFI File Transfer Web & FTP/App Manager
Super Manager -->All in One powerful system utility (backup apk in "Readable Display Name").
Do u know any other utility capable of this apart "AppMonster"?
I am currently running the Xeron Beta 2.9 build, which is ICS themed just a little.
But these are my downloaded apps:
Ice Cream Sandwich (theme) for adw and go launchers [replaces the stock icons to ice cream sandwich]
Clean Clock Widget [a nice 3x2 widget for showing time and date]
Dropbox [enables me to transfer some apk's files without the hassle and using usb]
ES File Explorer [file manager with root access to remove unwanted apps/bloat ware]
Firefox [best browser imo with access to my desktop bookmarks, and quick access to the address bar]
AnTuTu CPU Master (free) [overclocked my tablet to 1512 MHz]
Tiwiz ICS Search Bar [adds google search widget ICS themed]
Thanks for all replies. I'm going to the app store and checking out all recommendations. Keep them coming.
Forgot to mention this theme:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311339
Ignore the error message about screen size when you install, it works and looks fantastic! I love how the wifi and battery are the same color now, and the notification window is shaded so it's easier to tell when it's up. Also it makes the soft buttons more consistent with ICS.
