OK if I root this thing and install custom recovery, from my understanding we cant completely return it to stock, yet is that correct. We would need the RUU file to achieve this and restore the original recovery and we don't have it yet from what I can find or at least for the ATT version. There again if if root it and install CWM I can backup the stock rom and restore it if something happens this should also restore the stock kernel basically what are my chances of bricking this thing. Forgive me I haven't flashed kernels or roms since the original galaxy tab and Im a little rusty
NO!! You cannot return to stock if your device is from ATT caus official RUU for ATT not available anywhere on the net. Thats my problem too If you backup your rom with CWM you can only backup the system and data partition so recovery or any other is cant revert to original. If Jetstream gets S-OFF we can flash the rogers official RUU when something goes wrong and need to go back to stock. So I dont know why dont exist an official ATT RUU anywhere. Lot of people need it to go back to stock. I personally need to S-OFF to update my rom to Rogers caus ATT dont allow to update the Jetstream rom in the near future. ATT sucks to lock the ability of this device, updates, S-ON. They kill this device with this high security, no one buy this with this. People buy Samsung Tab or iPAD 2 rather then Jetstream caus iPad has Jailbreak and Samsung also has the ability to root, unlock bootloader and flash any rom you like easily. So hope developers can S-OFF the Jetstream.
From my understanding the s security goes off when you unlock the bootloader which can be done at htc developers. So with s off I can return to the Rodgers version and restore the stock recovery
Bootloader unlock and (Security Flag) S-OFF/S-ON is different thing. New HTC-s secured with 5 different Locks 1. Bootloader Lock 2. Security Flag 3. eMMC or Nand Lock 4. CID or Provider Lock 5. SIM Lock
When you unlock your bootloader, Security flag remains locked, S-ON. That is mine problem too.
Hope somebody can make the S-OFF. I can donate 25$ for it.

So I discovered a slight gap on certain edges of my One, which I got a week ago, and want to return it to AT&T for one that hopefully has no issues, but I've rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and flashed CM 10.1 on there. I searched through google and the forums here on XDA to find a method to relock the bootloader and go back to stock, but my search was fruitless. Apparently something called an RUU was needed? And according to the last post in this thread, that isn't available.
Is the RUU available now? Or is it currently impossible to relock the bootloader?
If so, would I be able to pull off just flashing the stock ROM back onto the phone and bringing it into AT&T? I feel like the only way they would realize something was different with the phone would be if they rebooted it, as I highly doubt most of the people in that store could even get into the bootloader screen. They had trouble syncing my google account.
Unless, of course, they send it back to the manufacturer and then THEY say that the warranty is voided because of the unlocked bootloader... but I don't know if they go through all that trouble in this situation?
Thanks for the help.

For a quick and easy way, just boot into fast boot and cmd "fastboot oem lock"
The only problem with that is that if they DO boot into the bootlaoder, it will say "RELOCKED" instead of "LOCKED"
The longer way, is to S-OFF (find it in the international forum) and then follow instructions there to put the "LOCKED" text back.

Get S-OFF, I was able to remove TAMPERED and change my UNLOCKED to LOCKED. You can also flash a modded HBoot that will take the red letters away and change the text from S-OFF to S-ON this will allow it to look like you never touched a thing
To get S-OFF I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314582
To mod your HBoot go through the post from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316726 (to download the HBOOT and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786498 to download the tool to create the modified HBOOT
But to let you know, I have returned 2 HTC Ones with unlocked bootloaders and AT&T did not say anything. Just flash the stock rom, make sure fastboot in enabled and leave it booted to the set up screen. Above is for if you want to be thorough and make sure you cover all your bases.
I'm aware of the OTA update next week that'll update me to Sense 6.
Currently displays in recovery:
Tampered
Unlocked
S-OFF
Currently on stock 4.4.2 rooted, no other kernel changes, etc. but the ROM I'm using has custom black boot screens added (literally just black instead of default white boot background).
Rooting is nice and all but getting tired and would just like to revert to pretty much locked bootloader, unrooted, factory condition, etc. and be able to also do OTA for future updates.
Any help is appreciated. Baby steps please.
Anyone?
First, relock your bootloader. To do that, start your phone in bootloader mode, connect your phone to pc via usb cable and type "fastboot oem lock" on command prompt. Next, download the proper ruu exe file from htc1guru.com. By proper,I mean the one that matches your phones actual model number and custom id. Execute the ruu while connecting your phone to pc in fastboot mode. Follow the on screen instructions and when finished, you will have s phone that says re locked and s-off. You will get ota in this condition and will be able to install ota and upgrade to Sense 6.0 without any problems.

Can I just flash that RUU in the link above? It should take me back to stock 4.4.2 with no modifications, stock recovery, and since I have an unlocked bootloader + S-OFF I should be able to get OTA's.
I'm just getting replies and finding info in other threads with different methods so I just don't want to screw up anything.

If you are only rooted with stock ATT software, unroot using the SuperSU app, make sure you have stock recovery, and you are golden. DO NOT turn S-ON, and also no need to lock bootloader, as with S-OFF, you will get updates with unlocked bootloader

I'm running stock AT&T 4.4.2 but the person who uploaded the ROM used a custom black boot screen (black HTC background instead of white when the phone boots) and so I was worried that might affect things. Hence I thought I could just flash an RUU to go back to 100% stock AT&T 4.4.2 (+ unroot) and maintaining unlocked bootloader + S-OFF so I can OTA.
EDIT: Could I just convert it to a Developer Edition using the link in your signature? Will there be any problems with my AT&T SIM card? All I have to do is relock bootloader and flash the Dev. Edition ROM.
Yes you can flash the decrypted ruu. It is the same as using the ruu exe.
If you haven't changed your mid and/cid,then what you need to is just lock the bootloader and flash the ruu (zip or exe). You will be on stock with s-off which is fine for getting ota.
Yes you can convert to developer edition. The DE and the at&t version are the same hardware-wise (except DE have 64gb storage instead of 32gb on at&t version) and have the same radio bands. You will get faster Android upgrades with no at&t bloats.

You may want to just try and apply the OTA when released. I'm not aware that S-OFF is a problem, I know an unlocked bootloader nor rooted isn't an issue. I got the Rogers OTA with an unlocked bootloader a rooted (by the way was still rooted after the OTA)
Just my 0.02

My understanding is that, if there's any modification in system files, applying OTA may result in a bootloop/brick. I agree that rooted devices remain rooted after OTA. As the OP said that s/he us using a rom with modified boot animation, I suggested him/her to return to stock first.
if HTC allows downgrading the bootloader so I can install a custom rom after I make the mistake of taking an OTA update from ATT. With the S4 this wasn't possible. but since this is my first android phone, I was wondering if it was Samsung trying to keep the device "secure" or ATT forcing these companies to keep their bootloaders locked.

Once you unlock the boot loader no update can relock it. HTC offers a lot more freedom than samsung, but at the price of no warranty. So if you unlock it and shatter your screen, don't be upset like other people when htc will not warranty it. As long as you have a custom recovery, your phone cannot even physically take an ota update so nothing to worry about either way.
The Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act is in place for us consumers for this reason. The company has to prove that any modification you did, is the cause of the trouble. So if you unlock your bootloader, root, etc, then crack your screen, as the poster above mentioned, the company can not void your warranty since what you did has nothing to do with cracking your screen.
This was huge for me when I modified my car and I found this here on XDA after doing more searching
http://www.xda-developers.com/xda-tv-2/your-warranty-is-not-void-xda-tv/
Oh and yeah,,if you are outside the US, it wont work lol

That depends on what you mean by "allow". You cannot downgrade the bootloader by any "official" means. You will fail version check when you try to install, as you can "normally" only flash a equal or great version number hboot.
But if you are s-off, version check is bypassed, and any hboot version can be flashed.
Similar to a previous response, my advice would be to unlock the bootloader (required if you want to flash custom ROMs anyway) and S-off the phone soon after you get it. Neither of those can be changed by any OTA.
Also, accepting OTA is not recommended on a modded phone, anyway. Whatever came in the update will usually get posted in a stock rooted form in the Development forum, and/or incorporated into custom ROMs, often within days of the OTA rolling out. And OTA will not install on a modded phone (stock recovery needs to be present). OTAs also may plug existing s-off or other exploit; preventing you from doing them if you haven't already (but as mentioned, can't make the phone s-on again). Moral of the story, I strongly recommend against OTA on any modded phone.
Some of these terms/concepts are HTC specific, so may be a bit confusing for you. I would suggest reading up on these forums, if you aren't familiar with s-off, HTC's bootloader unlock process, etc.
(SOLVED)
Im in stock 4.1.2 whit S-OFF, unlocked bootloader (1.55) and then RELOCKED.
¿Can i take the last OTA?
Im not rooted, and i dont have custom recoverys (i recently flashed a RUU.zip to return to stock, but i could not remove the S-OFF and RELOCKED status because the hboot 1.55).
I have economic (health) problems and I'll really need to sell my phone, but I'm afraid that the new owner will come out error when trying to update.

Yes. You can get OTAs while S-OFF. And assuming you haven't unlocked the bootloader since flashing the RUU, all the system files it verifies should be in place to accept OTAs. However, considering you are currently on 4.1.2, you'll need to run through a progression of OTAs to get up to the latest version, 4.4.2 w/ Sense 6. Might be better to just run the latest RUU to bring it up to 4.4.2 w/ Sense 5.5 then OTA to Sense 6. Be aware that you'll need to be on the AT&T network in order to get the updates OTA. If you're not on AT&T, you'll need to flash the updates manually, in which case you'll need to be S_OFF.
Also, once the phone is S-OFF there is no good reason to change that back to S-ON. There's the potential of bricking the phone by doing so. And even if it doesn't brick, the updates in firmware may make it more difficult to obtain S-OFF again.
Thank you very much.
At the begining i did this:
1- Unlocked bootloader and flashed TWRP.
2- Root
3- Gained S-Off
When i decide to sell it i did this:
1- Removed xposed and root.
2 - Relocked bootloader.
3 - Flashed RUU.zip (4.1.2)
¿What do you mean whit AT&T network? I unlocked the phone vía imei (using it in mexico whit Telcel) and still have the update appearing.
Sorry for my terrible english

First off, since you are S-OFF there is no need to relock the bootloader in order to flash an RUU. It will run just fine with an unlocked bootloader. Also when you flash an RUU, all the partitions get wiped so there is no need to do anything within the ROM such as remove xposed & root prior to flashing. The RUU will set the device essentially in a factory state.
As far as I understand it, the OTAs for carrier specific devices are served up by the carrier. So if the phone has been SIM unlocked and is being used on another network, if you go into Settings>AT&T software update, it will not receive any available OTA update. You will need to flash the update file manually using the information in this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2659374.
Since you are still on 4.1.2, you will need to run one of the recent RUUs in order to manually flash the OTA updates in that thread. The latest RUU available for AT&T devices is KK4.4.2 w/Sense 5.5.
http://androidruu.com/getdownload.p...09_10.26.1718.01L_release_356565_signed_2.exe
Flash that then you can manually flash the OTA update to get Sense 6.
You are the man.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I just bought a new at&t HTC One (M8) and I'd like to have a fresh stock backup in case of return/warranty problems. I'd like to make this myself so I can ensure that I'll be able to put the exact software that came with my phone back if need be. Also I'd just like to know how to do this in general. What I've found via search has been for rooted phones or different brands. Is it possible to use ADB or any other tool to do this? I guess I'm confused because I see posts for flashing back to stock. How do devs get these stock roms? If someone could point me to a good guide/tutorial it would be much appreciated.
Not without a rooted device or an unsecure [email protected] backup...there is an ruu posted for the 1.58.502.1, thats as close to being a backup without altering the phone in anyway
As long as you are a current account holder, AT&T does not give a crap what software is on your phone, bootloader unlocked, even a custom ROM installed in regards to warranty service based on many reports on XDA.
If you are still wondering about returning to stock, as mentioned in the above, your version (AT&T) if fortunate enough to have a 1.58 RUU. The ROM Update Utility is a useful means of installing a full stock image (ROM, radio, recovery, etc.) via connection to a PC.
But it can still be determined the bootloader is unlocked, no matter what you do to the phone to return it to stock. Your IMEI is tracked by HTCDev.com when you unlock the bootloader. But again, as long as you go through AT&T for warranty service (highly recommended for this reason) they don't care if the phone is modded.
I believe the stock ROMs you mention are system dumps done after bootloader unlock.
