I always used Swiftkey X on my phone. I will also try the tablet version. And thanks for the recommendation for Thumb keyboard, I will try it, too.

Ive tried thumb keyboard, A.I. Type, and now SwiftkeyX
Thumb Keyboard - was ok, but I kept hitting the bottom dock bar when trying to hit space, also seemed to freeze up sometimes. Not sure that isn't a Android3.1 issue.
A.I. Type - long press vs shift was messing me up. You don't long press for the icon in top corner, you press shift. Creature of habit...
SwiftkeyX - So far so good, very similar to the one on my phone. 4 themes which look cleaner than the other keyboard IMO.
I will possibly use the ICS keyboard once it is released, heres to hoping they implement a split keyboard option.

The whole split keyboard is very nice If your always/most of the time typing with two hands, but I kept finding myself laying down, holding tab in one hand and typing with the other. In this senerio I think the split keyboard makes things harder. At the moment I like slideit, going to try tablet swift key...

Sounds like thumb keyboard isn't for you anyways, but there is a toggle on it to switch to a regular layout keyboard
Thumb keyboard for me as well. I also have hitting the dock problem but am slowly getting use to it and not making that mistake anymore. Split keyboard really is necessary IMO.

You will get used to the space bar, I did that for a while too, hit the notification bar, you will adjust on no time

I don't think you gave Thumb KB a chance or you did not explore all of the features. If you are holding the tablet in landscape you have the split KB for thumb typing. If you lay it down, with the press of one button, it is a full KB which can be customized as well.

Actually in landscape mode, Thumb Keyboard has a mode exactly for you. You can slide the whole keyboard to one side, so you hold the tablet on one side and type on the other. I just found this out and love this keyboard even more! And swapping is just a single toggle key on the keyboard.

Any good free ones? Non swype.. I got horribly annoyed with just the keyboard tracing before I figured out how to turn it off. Screen too large to swype!
After this thread, I decided to give Thumb KB android try... well, I have to say I've changed my mind and liking this over slideit alot more Thanks guys lol

thumb keyboard has various keyboard layouts that you can switch on the fly, and one of them moves the keyboard to one side which should make typing the way you describe easier.
the buttons are in b/t the space bars to change layouts.
also, the keyboard can be tweaked a bit to help with hitting the notification bars, i did that a lot too, but you generally adjust your muscle memory over time. to be fair, i hit the notification bar with most split keyboards until i got used to it just because they're generally close to each other.
Using the SwiftKey Tablet trial at the moment, liking it because I'm used to SwiftkeyX on my phone. May switch over to thumbkeyboard at some point, but the lack of a trial to see how well it fits me is holding me back.

Is there a way to remove the on-screen keyboard(OSC) from popping up every time i dock my SGT? It's pretty annoying and surprising that samsung didn't notice this. I don't need an OSC popping up when i already have a keyboard present. besides, i could always call it up if i need it.

When you beginning typing, you will see a little keyboard icon in the notification steam. Touch it and change to the Samsung keyboard. That should do away with it. There are also two keyboard keys on the dock keyboard. One is 2-3 keys to the left of the spacebar and the other is above the shift key.
They seem to give you setting options and on demand pop up a touch keyboard

I've already tried changing to the samsung keyboard but it still keeps appearing. I know how to make it disappear by pressing on the key beside ctrl, but is there a way not to make the on screen keyboard appear at all when docked?
I have not found a repeatable amd tracable method. Sometimes changing soft keyboard to Samsung or English works go not make it appear. Sometimes it works other times it doesnt.
I am not really committing lot to figuring it out until after the TouchWiz update. But i have yet to excessively use the keyboard to be honest. So i may have more patience. It would be nice to be able to define a dock keyboard behavior and a handheld behavior. It is also annoying to switch back to thumb or swift keyboards.

One of the things I noticed is that keyboard sliders are much less effective on tablets because you generally have to slide with your index finger, and you can't hold the tablet in the more comfortable 'thumb typing' position.
Why not make a slide keyboard where there's a small QWERTY keyboard on the right or left for thumb sliding, and then extended secondary buttons on the left?
when i had swype on a 10" tablet it had an option to use a smaller centred keyboard when in landscape mode...i couldn't get swype on the flyer so i gave up on it
btw, i've never used my thumb to type...you should try using fingers!

When I first got the prime, i noticed very quickly that I couldn't type on the onscreen keyboard nearly as fast as on the ipad.
I then noticed the reason was because if I hit the black bar at the bottom of the tablet instead of space by accident, it would close the keyboard.
However if you use the default google keyboard instead of the asus one, hitting the black bar results in a space making typing a LOT easier and faster.
Does anyone know of a way to fix this? I would rather use the asus one as I like the numbers available at the top.
Has anyone had problems with the dock keyboard too? I find sometimes some of the letters don't respond no matter what i try.

It's called use or make a different one that more closely matches your tastes/needs. I use Hacker's, and sometimes SwiftKey.

One nice thing about Android's openness, you are not confined to any particular on screen keyboard. When I'm not docked, I'll use the thumbs keyboard (I forget the exact name). But when I'm using ConnectBot, its easier for me to use the hackers keyboard. Mostly, however I use my dock because I touch type the best that way (used to certain feedback a physical keyboard provides).

Yeah I have thumb keyboard too and yeah it's good. Has everyone else noticed that prob with the main keyboard then? Such an oversight. Most other keyboards actually ignore when you hit the bottom bar which doesn't help either and that includes thumb and hackers. The google one is the only one I feel that gets it right, I.e. making the bottom bar a space bar as well.
Does anyone else have a problem with the docked keyboard when sometimes certain letters just won't work?

Have been used to Thumb Keyboard and it does have word prediction.
Swiftkey Tablet has a month trial.
I was testing the waters to see if I was more accurate with Swiftkey but suspect that am used to Thumb Keyboard now so moving to something else was not as accurate. Am back to Thumb Keyboard.
Maybe I just like the word predictions of swiftkey more I guess

i compared swiftkey to thumb keyboard for quite some time.
swiftkey just seemed to give far better predictions, although thumbkeyboards very flexible layouts are a definite plus on that side.
but i keep coming back to swiftkey x tablet. fastest and most precise imho.
some things i would like them to implement though is:
more layouts (like thumbkey)
shorctu swiping (swipe has this if you swipe from the "swype" key to "a" it selects all. swype->x=cut, swype->C=copy just like using a computer. really great. i use it a lot on my phone.
also arrow keys.

I'm a huge proponent of Swype, both for phones and tablets. Once you take a bit of time to learn how it behaves and predicts your words, it is a great text input method.
Thumb keyboard for me. Love the customizability and the ability to pin common phrases. Plus the top row of customizable keys that can be hidden away is nice. I use it for coding so I can easily get to keys like /,\,{,}, etc.
Tried a bunch of them: Thumb Keyboard, Perfect Keyboard, Super Keyboard, SwiftKey X Tablet.
They all have their weaknesses: some are slow, some have the keys too close together, some have punctuation marks that aren't easily accesible and some have a mandatory autocomplete which you can't turn off.
I always turn off autocomplete because I seem to always keep an eye on the words to check up on it, instead of actually typing, so I feel like I'm always slower with autocomplete.
So, for me, it's the stock keyboard simply because it's the fastest (it keeps up with my fast typing, I'm not talking about the apparent onscreen animations). It's one of the most responsive I've tried and the keys are the perfect size and spacing (this is what really counts when turning off autocomplete).
Also, every other keyboard out there, except the stock one, registers the last key that was touched, as the key pressed, when in fact the first key touched should be registered, in order to accomodate for fast typing. This is the same for my HTC Sensation stock keyboard. I've only found these 2 keyboards with this behaviour, but I think all keyboards should do the same. I regard this as a bug.

I also found MultiLing Keyboard to be very responsive and have the right key size/spacing to use for both my phone and my tablet. It has a nicer split layout than any of the other split keyboards.
Stock isn't that bad, but Swype does run slow compared to others I've used. Thanks for the suggestions.

For this and the fact that I find myself often writing in 3 different languages, I also use stock keyboard and autocomplete/autocorrect off.
The Word predictions of Swiftkey is so great, that I never have to type a whole word. Most of my tipping time is just hitting the words.

Me too. Allready using the swiftkey 3 tablet beta. For free, works fine.
Does anyone here use Swiftkey 3 Tablet, and do you find it laggy? There's a delay with every key stroke that slows my typing down, especially when I use it in a text editor (like Jota) and want to do fast typing. Their predictive engine is amazing, I'd swear it's psychic. It gives you three predictions even before you type a single letter of the next word. Sometimes I'll enter a whole sentence without typing a single letter, just choosing words it's predicted. If not for the lag, I'd use it every time.
Thumb Keyboard is great, zero delay when I type, their predictive engine isn't as good, it gives you a bunch of predictions, but not until you type at least one letter in the next word.
Is Swiftkey not optimized for the Nook Color? Or is there something I'm missing here?
IF you have the Swiftkey beta 3 get rid of it and install the latest released version. Beta had terrible lag. the current version for me has no lag at all.
I use also latest official Swiftkey and works just fine
Okay, it seems that Jota and Swiftkey don't work very well together, at least on my tablet. One of the reviewers for Swiftkey also mentions this. I tried Swiftkey with another text editor (NTW) and there's no lag, so I'll switch. It works fine in all my other apps. Too bad, I do like Jota. The lag is very minor, but enough to take me out of a flow when I type in Jota.

I was a Thumb keyboard user forever. But fiund myself constantly hitting the period key instead of the space bar, and often the b and n keys. I would have to spend time cleaning up every post. I tried Swiftkey and love it much more than my Thumb kb. Hardly any wrong keys entered and no more misplaced periods.

I used to use swiftkey but I've hopelessly fallen in love with Swype beta. XD. To those who haven't tried it yet, you should, just Google it. Also it's free. Or you can just go the crazy route and hook up a mechanical keyboard to your nook through host mode like me. ;P

Oh man, I do this all the time. Tried training myselfnto.use (see, SEE!) the left thumb for space, but still can't get it 100%. Still 5x better than stock keyboard. I may have to give swiftkey a try as per this thread.
