HDMI 480p / No picture on TV - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi. I have the Motorola atrix, the TFP, and a 32 inch Westinghouse TV with HDMI out.
My atrix also has micro HDMI, and shows a picture on the TV with no problems. Movies and pictures work fine as well.
Today for grins I decided to hook up the TFP to the HDMI port and yes I did switch input to HDMI, and it recognized the connection on the TFP. On the TV it showed 480p and it played sound of the TFP, but no video. I looked in settings in both places to see if the input settings could be changed and didn't find much other than 3d settings.
I don't know a lot about this stuff I just figured HDMI was HDMI. I am assuming my cheap TV is bunk? If that's the case what are the specs I need for a TV to work with the TFP?
Thanks.

As a follow up, I turned off my prime while plugged into the TV. Then I turned it back on and a little android guy showed up on the TV screen and had 720p? I couldn't hit enter anything to accept this setting so then once it booted back up the screen went blank again.
After more reading, is it possible its the HDMI cable that is junk?
Audio plays just no video. If anyone has advice it would be appreciated.

Could the problem be that I'm using the Motorola micro HDMI cable that came with the atrix. Volume plays but video doesn't. Any advice would be great.

I have the same problem. An android logo shows saying "720p?".
Whenever I change the TV AV to the HDMI one, it says on the top left of the TV that it's 480p and then you have the android logo in the middle.
My PS3 works fine with HDMI when connected.
Any ideas on how to change that 480p that comes in the corner of the TV ? How to change to 720p ?

HDMI Cable quick review

Just received my HDMI cable (http://electroniccrap.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=&products_id=27)from electronicCrap, it works perfectly. It also works as a DVI cable for connecting to business projectors (without sound of course) with a small adapter such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-ADP-3780-Female-Adapter/dp/B0018QTWH2
Great product if you need to do presentations or anything. Just be aware that most apps are fairly low resolution (ie will look pixelated) even if the tablet is outputting a full 1080p signal.
The only minor issue is the connector to the gTab, which is a bit bulkier than what is pictured on his site. This could be a problem with some cases, but it works well with mine (the FUSE).
Update 7/23:
-Cable works great on 1080p monitors and TVs.
-HW accelerated apps display at much higher resolution. Everything else is 1024x600 with poor (pixelated) scaling.
-Cable may not work on 720p TV's.
-May not display HW acclrrated 1080p properly on 720p TV even if other things work
-Audio is stereo only as far as I and others can tell. Does android as a platform even support 5.1?

Just my two cents since receiving this cable.
I have successfully used the cable on my...720p TV with a Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb rom...games designed for the tegra chip look great also...Software decoded movies suffer from ... pixelation. I have not been able to determine if the HDMI cable or the tegra chip for that matter can process and pass 5.1 audio channels, but regular stereo audio works...
...some [720p] TVs can handle the 1080p input and scale it down, while others cannot.
Lastly, playing a 1080p movie will not output to a 720p TV. For one reason or another when I played both Divx and H264 in 720p or other lower resolutions it showed up fine on my TV, however both Divx and h264 1080p movies just displayed a blank screen while they played fine on the display on the gtab.
Hope this helps some people...

Do you have to do any restarts or anything to get the video to sync?
you have had this for a while now...any problems to report.?

Does this work ln a 720p TV or just 1080p?

Most (if not all) 720P TVs should be able to accept a 1080P signal and display it as 720P.
$30 seems like a lot of money for a cable.
Better than 50 for the dock just to use the hdmi

True not to mention $7 US shipping and $17 Canadian shipping.
(that said its currently on sale for $23 + shipping).

Actually the dock is $43 shipped world wide (with CC "welcome").
And beside the HDMI cable you get a supplementary charging solution, stand, 2 USB port and LAN port.
I got this cable, but it is not working for me. I have a 720p plasma and am wondering if the Gtab output does not work with 720p TVs. I know the Gtab is detecting the HDMI connection because the sound goes off on the Gtab. But on the TV, all I get is a blank screen saying no signal.
Information to add
Just my two cents since receiving this cable.
I have successfully used the cable on my 50 inch Samsung 720p TV with a Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb rom. Any graphics that are NOT accelerated by the tegra chip looks VERY pixelated, so bad its almost unusable. However watching movies on a Froyo rom using the hardware decoder look VERY NICE! Also games designed for the tegra chip look great also, ie. Riptide rush. Software decoded movies suffer from the same horrible pixelation. I have not been able to determine if the HDMI cable or the tegra chip for that matter can process and pass 5.1 audio channels, but regular stereo audio worked on my TV. If anyone knows if 5.1 channel audio can be passed I'd love to know.
Additionally, I could NOT get the cord to work on my 32 inch Samsung. I think some TVs can handle the 1080p input and scale it down, while others cannot.
Hope this helps some people and I hope we can get some graphics acceleration for Honeycomb soon...heard someone has a Notion Ink kernel with full graphics acceleration, can that be ported to the gtab?
updated op. cable works great for me on 1080 screens. yes, 30 is a lot for only hdmi. but it is compact and easy to carry compared to the dock. basically we are paying for the r&d costs. I am just glad this thing exists.
Does the cable work with honeycomb roms? And does the power have to be plugged in for the cable to work? I'm having no luck with video showing up on my tv with the HDMI cable hooked up. I running gtabcomb atm.

You needn;t plug the power in. Just connect your Gtablet to your TV via HDMI cable. But i don;t know if it is work with Honeycomb roms..
Got cable to work but you've got to have your tablet turned on before plugging it in.

MHL video

I seem to have a weird problem with the 3VO. I got an MHL adapter for it, and it work great with a samsung 3d tv. The problem is. When i connect it to my Sanyo tv. It only has a DVI input and ends up offsetting the video to the left and showing this weird strip of colored lines on the right.
Anyone know how to set the output resolution? i have never seen any other device do that with this tv, but to be fair, the only other HDMI device i have is a PS3. Tv is 1080i, but i would like to try to force the output to 720p to see if that corrects the problem. Im running virus' Eternity 1.4.2 right now.

You have to change a setting on your TV to scale it instead of displaying it in 16:9 mode. This is because the prime resolution is 16:10.
Another option would be to restart you prime with the HDMI cable still connected. Last time I tried that the prime adjusted to 16:9 and made the bottom toolbar thicker.

[Q] HDMI & ICS Question

I did a search here. I have the Prime and had great success from 12/28/11 until ICS update around 01/10/12 but since then my TV shows no signal and this lasts for several minutes so the TV has had time to communicate with the tablet.
1. I have done a Factory Reset
2. I have tried all 4 HDMI ports on the TV
3. I have tried a second TV
4. I have ordered and tried a second cable (stranger things have happened)
5. I have called Asus Customer Support
My options are of course RMA but that means no tablet for 10-14 business days or wait to see if and when an ICS update may correct this issue for me.
Am I just out of luck here and just need to give up my Prime for 2-3 weeks or do you think that an ICS update maybe on the horizon and may correct my issue?
I don't think it is an ICS issue. My conection between the prime and the tv works perfectly. BUT it does seem to take about 15 seconds before anything shoes up on the tv after I plug the cable into the prime.

Thanks for your reply. I just went back and edited my post to add that I leave it plugged in for longer than a couple of minutes. I even flip between HDMI channels using the TV remote while the Prime is plugged in. The TV just never sees it!

Did you double check with another HDMI cable? Some cables of lower quality do prevent the Prime and the TV from synchronizing.
I paid $39 for Rocketfish 8' micro HDMI cable from Best Buy yesterday and attached it to the available HDMI port on the back of my 25" I-Inc monitor. My Transformer Prime didn't see that I had the HDMI cable connected until after I shut it down and restarted it, only after doing that the bootup screen appeared on my monitor and Prime and when I logged in the Prime had the HDMI logo displayed on the tray.
The problem I'm experiencing now is stability. I get constant screen flickering from the monitor when I'm viewing the Prime through the HDMI connection. It seems like its software. I have no other devices to test this out on besides my monitor as the HDMI on my HDTV is only capable of receiving 1080i.
Another sign that it seems like software that's causing the flickering is that I notice considerable lag from the mousepad cursor using the Dock when my monitor is flickering from viewing the Prime over HDMI.

I haven't noticed any flickering but I have only watched real steel ones mine so far. Was a 1080p mkv file and I hooked it up through my receiver. The tv is 46" so I think I would have noticed. Have you tried other files? Oh, and I use a 6' cable is bought from monoprice for like $5

I get screen flickering (or better description screen blinking) immediately after connecting HDMI to it.
I can be just viewing the Prime's desktop not playing back any video and my Monitor displaying the Prime over HDMI will blink by going complete dark and it will continue to do this randomly and frequently.
When playing back video it continues to do this and not only is it losing the picture it's also losing audio in this screen blinking problem.
---------- Post added at 05:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:10 AM ----------
I just tried the HDMI input on my BenQ monitor and I get a stable connection, no blinking.
Only difference is that my BenQ monitor has no built-in speakers and it's not a 1080p monitor it's a 1680x1050 res monitor. So I'm getting an improper viewing aspect ratio.
Is there a way to turn off the audio from outputing through HDMI and keep it coming from the Prime?
Turns out my TFP works fine connected to my old Samsung 30" HDTV CRT over HDMI, I didn't try it at first because I thought the the TFP would try to output 1080p to the set which can only handle 1080i.
I'm surprised that it connected instantly to my HDTV, now I need to correct my TV's left and right fields in the service menu as it is zoomed too far in.
Does anyone know if the TFP have a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio? I'll have to keep this in mind when adjusting the settings cause I want to maintain a 16:9 setting on the HDTV.

Yes sir in my original post I state that I bought a 2nd cable. Also since it was working fine before ICS and with all the things I have tried in my post it is either ICS or the port on my Prime. Or yeah somehow I got 2 faulty cables and 1 of them worked great until the update!
No I just hope it is ICS for me.

Thanks, I tried shutting the Prime down and restarting while the HDMI cable was plugged into the TV but no dice for me.
My HDMI was working and I have watched several movies on my TV previously.
Fast forward a few weeks and HDMI no longer works! I bought a cheap cable on Amazon, and noticed the micro connection was very loose. The HDMI notification no longer shows up. I ordered a 'real' cable from mono price, but still no luck.
No picture and no HDMI notification - arrgh.
The TP HDMI connection seems very loose, even with the new cable. Looks like an RMA for me.

That's what I'm thinking too. It's not real loose but it does have wiggle room that I didn't notice before! I hate it because I'll be without it for 2-3 weeks and everything else with the tablet works great!

i also use a micro hdmi cable, work great.
my only issue is the connection to the tablet. the cable deforms the connector in the tablet so that i use connection to external display as soon as i move the tablet just a little bit.
does someone else have this issue too?
The one thing about the Micro HDMI connection is that there are a few ROMs where the HDMI doesn't work right, namely, the AOSP Jelly Bean builds. I tried CM10 preview and EOS last weekend, and they both sent video, but no audio through the HDMI. The last I saw (this morning) there was still no mention of a fix on EOS' changelog.

It is also possible to stream you media over wifi, with the "MyNet" app from Asus.
Works perfectly with my Samsung smart TV
