I rooted my nook tablet last week to get the Kindle app so I could continue my textbooks my new nook. But I am getting a "Unavailable for Download - The item is not compatible with the device", when trying to download books from the archive.
The root went fine I can access and download the amazon app from the market fine. Issues only occur when trying to add items from the archive.
I have a SD card inserted and see the structure of
Memory Card -> Android -> data -> com.amazon.kindle -> files -> b00tiqxaks_ebok.prc_temp which is saying this file is unsupported when I click on it.
Any tips?
I've had no troubles with it. I have seeral books from amazon and all seems to work fine.

Did it work first shot and you didnt have to modify anything?
I have uninstalled amazon kindle, rebooted, then resintalled.
Still with same issue.
Interestingly, I find sometimes the app will stop allowing bookmarks, highlights and syncing. Stopping and restarting the app does not seem to work. I have to turn the unit off and back on. Then all is fine again.
Weird problem.
I am having the same problem. It downloads the book and then says inturrupted, even though it appears that the whole file has been downloaded. Reinstalled the Kindle app with no changes.

Can't say I've had any issues with messages or failures (other than below), just the seemingly transparent effect of sync and bookmarks (and highlights) stop working. A power cycle clears it up, but would love to know what is causing it in the first place.

My Nook App on my tab just updated itself, and now i get an error when trying to sign in, did this happen with other people?
it says internal error: error exception executing command.
i've restarted, i've uninstalled then restarted, nothing. my tab is NOT rooted.
----------fixed ---------
Well I figured it out. I'm not saying it's because of thumbkeyboard, but this is the only thing I changed to make it work.
Typically after entering my login I just tap the sign in button. This ttime I minimized thumbkeyboard then tapped sign in and no error. So I think it had to do with the fact that previous attempts I left the keyboard showing which is weird but whatever. Back to reading!

you must have auto update enabled
i just updated mine and everything works. I did have to redownload a boatload of books for whatever the reason. Hopefully they're changing the way magazines are delivered. I hate the fact that it's nothing but bunch of pics being saved on the tab
anyone have ideas? B&n support isn't very helpful...
Ive cleared cache uninstall restart installed even cleared market cache & I still get same error after it says registering device and punch in my acct info

Haven't tried my nook app since it notified me that it had updated; will try it in a minute. I agree about all the damn pictures for my subscriptions, though. One of the things on my list for this weekend was to find out if gallery can skip certain directories.
UPDATE: the new nook app refused to even log me in. I uninstalling and reinstalled from the market and it works fine. Still unhappy about all those image files, though.

I rooted the NT and installed the Amazon Kindle app just fine.
It runs okay, but I cannot add any books to my device. It'll say it's downloading my device but it never shows up. Attempting a sync fails with "Sync failed. Please try again later." Yes, I'm signed in and connected to WiFi.
Has anyone gotten this working?

Works for me, i install the Kindle app directly from the google market. I was able sign-in, bring up all the books I brought, and is able to read them. So try reinstall your kindle app.
By the way, accidentally click thanks instead of reply, so looks like you got your "tx" hehe.
Okay I reinstalled it, went to re-download Sherlock Holmes... it said I already had it, but it doesn't show up in my list. I clicked "Read It Now" on the store page and it opened the book, but it says "Downloading Interrupted" even though it's at 100%. Only buttons are resume/cancel and neither resolve the issue.
I always get "Sync failed" still too.

Is your NT rooted? Also after download, have you try restarting your NT?
Yeah it's been rooted since day 1, and I've restarted it multiple times.
Did you install the Kindle app from the Google market or the Amazon app store? Just curious. It might matter, I suppose.
Installed via Google Market, which should work since it works for gordon1hd1...

Do you insert an microSD card into the NT? I know that some app won't work without a microSD (Dropbox being one of them). I put an 16GB mSD card into my NT since the first day i got it.
I haven't, I wasn't planning on buying a microSD quite yet.
Any chance you could use a file manager to see if you can find where your books are? This might be the cause after all, I wish the app would actually report why it's getting errors.

I am not at home, so i can't check my NT, but on my Samsung Galaxy S2, the kindle files are stored on /mnt/sdcard/kindle folder.
So i think that is your problem.
For whatever it may be worth, the Kindle app works fine on my non-rooted NT. I do have a microSD card in the slot.
The kindle app works on my nook but it looks like u have to read those books via that application.

Yep, it's the only app that officially decodes their drm. You can transfer those files off and remove the drm (don't ask me how ;P) and import it into another reader though (or convert it around with calibre - great ebook manager software; I definitely recommend it for managing your collection and conversions).
A lot of things won't work properly, save properly, or download correctly if you don't have an SD card inserted into an NT (or NC, afaik), so it's definitely a requirement (@OP) and will be useful for a lot of other programs as well.
I have seen several posts with people having issues trying to use the Amazon app store or install apps from the Amazon app store on their nook, so I decided to write up this brief guide.
1) You MUST have an SDCard installed BEFORE installing the Amazon app store. The reason for this is that the Amazon app store uses an SDCard to store certain information/cache/etc. While you can can get some things to install without an SDCard, you won't get all your apps to install without one. So if you want to install all your stuff from the Amazon app store, put an SDCard in your Nook FIRST.
2) From your Nook tablet, you can install the Amazon Appstore by typing in the following URL: www.amazon.com/amazonappstoreapp
3) You CAN use the same Amazon app store login on multiple devices. I currently have 2 HTC EVO3D phones and the Nook tablet all using the same login. The advantage of this is that if you (like me) have been grabbing free app of the day for a long time now, you will also have access to these on your Nook tablet.

hey is it possible for an app from the amazon app store to not be compatible with the NT? i think today's free app isn't compatible with the NT because it simply says so when I try to install it...
Probably. There are a lot of apps on the normal Android market that aren't compatible with the NT. The difference between them and the free app of the day is that they just don't show up normally. The free app shows up for everyone, since it's part of the "Advertising" section of the store.

I think I've done this correctly, but let me make sure...
I'm working with a rooted NT.
I uninstalled the amazon app using an uninstaller from the Android market.
I removed the SD card, which was not in there the first time I turned on the NT.
Turned off the NT
Deleted all contents on the SD card and reinserted it.
Turned on the NT
Installed the Amazon App
Signed in
Tried to install a few apps, but keep getting "Unable to install - This application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "Unarchive" the application to try again.
Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this?
Thanks!

This is what happens when you try to install a non-Nook app using the BN App Installer instead of the Android Package Installer. You need to navigate to the Manage Applications menu (get to it from NT Hidden Settings app, or the applications menu of ADW or Zeam, or any other possible way) and find App Installer. Click on it and then click the button that says "clear defaults." This should bring up a menu next time you install an app where you will choose to install with Package Installer, and set this as default. You should be good to go from there on (unless you try to install an app that is not designed for tablets/NT as indicated above).

Thank you for the assistance!
When I went there, no defaults were set. I went back to install an app and I still get the same error message, but originally I wasn't specific enough and left out this step:
I get a popup menu when I choose to install or reinstall an app and it asks me:
Complete action using - App Installer or Package installer.
If I choose app installer, I get the error mentioned. If I choose package installer, I get Parse error - There is a problem parsing the package.
remove sd card and put back in.
remove sd card and reboot and put back in.
it's something to do with the sd card.
Package Installer is what you should be using. From my experience, 'parsing error' has meant that the app is not compatible with the NT. So far these have included BeWeather, multiple games from Gameloft, and a drawing pad app from Amazon.

I don't think so, I was getting that error trying to download es file manager. amazon appstore stared to work after I removed sd card, rebooted, put card back in, download some apps off android market. So not completely sure what I did to get it working.
Ya, just for the sake of testing try MultiTouch Tester. It's free and I just installed it to make sure.

Well then that is probably worth trying also. Now that I think about it there are some apps that I tried to sideload and got a parsing error, then when I tried to install with Root Explorer they did work (but not all have). So I guess this only makes the error more unclear...

Worked for me. Worked with my old root, and now with Indirect's updated root script too.
Recently re-rooted after 1.4.1 update. Used Indirect's updated root script.
Is there some regional thing with the Amazon Appstore? I'm from England, on holiday in the US and I picked up a Tablet. I installed the amazon appstore fine and it worked and i tried to get it to download the free version of ES File Manager and everytime it starts it pops up with a payment issue and takes me to a webpage to sign in to add my payment details. I have a UK credit card attached to my account and figured that would be fine considering I'm not even paying for anything as its free but it wont let me. So can people outside the US without a US credit card use the mazon appstore? Also how do you get the Amazon App store icon to show up in the apps area? Once I leave the store the only way I can get it back is by re-installing it which is not ideal.

I have a rooted NT with Indirects OTA blocker and am still at 9.9.9
I tried to download my first BN book from the original BN Nook interface but it starts downloading but never finishes. The BN site recognizes my account and allows the download but it never finishes. Tried numerous times with more than one book (the free ones).
The only suggestion BN support had for me was to factory restore (sure!).
Any ideas? Has anybody downloaded books after rooting?
Why not try some alternatives?
One. Install Amazon app store and Kindle app. Try those.
Two. Install "calibre" on your desktop computer. Find books on file sharing services. Send books to NT with calibre.

I had the same problem along with my security password not showing up when I powered on. I think mine was caused after I applied TITANIUM backup to restore my apps. Accidentally restored the system backup as well. Well after a factory reset and restore, I'm back on track again.

I already do those things (and they work). It's just that I don't like the idea of something not working when it should.

Not sure what you mean by "security password"? My BN account password must be there because they're "charging me" and allowing the download, it's just that the download never takes place (starts, looks like it's finished, but then asks me to download again).

Had the same issue. I fixed it by DL a book to my PC, then putting it in my Dropbox. When I open it on my NT, it asked for the name and credit card number I used to buy the book. After I entered that the book opened and I was able to DL my other books directly from my NT
That did it. Thank you so much.
How did you ever figure that out?

Ok I figured out how to get it to work. Problem was downloading via wrong browser apparently when I was downloading i would always push the "n" button and select web. When I did the following though it worked perfectly fine. Though I will be updating to CM10 seeing as it has been confirmed I have a 16GB and not the 8GB I paid for
Step-by-step:
1) Press "n" button
2) Press "Home"
3) Press "ADW.Launcher"
4) Press the globe (browser) button on the launch pad on bottom of screen
5) Go to http://www.amazon.com/amazonappstoreapp
6) Bottom left corner notification tray will say "amazonappstore.apk Successfully downloaded) Select it
7) Choose Package Installer from the pop-up window
8) Press Install
9) Enjoy!!!

In the nook hidden settings you need to allow apps from unknown sources. I got rid of stock root a while ago, but I think you can download it from Google play.

I think I'm going to give up on this one. I had to google what an app drawer is, then, once I found it, I still couldn't find the right security setting to allow me to download from unknown whatevers, and I have to figure out how to download google play after I get the Apk thing downloaded, so I can then download the app store. Ya'll are hella smart because I'm completely lost and so tired of googling everything under the sun, I'm over it, I even tried to read a crash report that was code ugh, so much for doing it on my own. Thanks for helping me out, though, I do appreciate it and kudos to those of you who can sideload and root your devices because that's a whole other ballgame!

It sounds to me like you haven't rooted your Tablet. You need to do that. When doing that Google apps (incuding Google Play store) will be installed. If NT Hidden settings isn't already installed by the root you can find it in the Play store.
I describe rooting under "B" in this post:
