After searching the Flyer forum, I am unable to find instruction on how to add a recovery to a HTC Dev unloader bootloader with my updated HoneyComb Flyer.
I did find some instruction for the EVO 3d (below). How would I do it with the Flyer and can I get a link to a recovery img for the flyer?
From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
After you've followed their instructions, you can come back here to get your custom recovery and Superuser setup.
So, you got ur Bootloader unlocked via HTC, now, on your phone, go to menu > settings > applications > development and check the box net to usb debugging.
Now, here are the rest of ur required downloads for the next steps:
su 2.3.6.3
TWRP Recovery
Thanks to Brandas for the above version of TWRP that works with HTC's unlock. He posted it in a thread last week, I just tested it and am posting it here.
Here is where he originally posted it, http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=223
Take both the su.zip and recovery.img files and put them in your sdk tools folder.
Then, get in your command prompt from ur sdk tools folder.
Small tip, with windows 7, if you hold down the shift key and right click on ur sdk tools folder, the 4th option is to open a command window there. It's much easier then manually navigating there.
Now do the following in ur command prompt, hitting enter after each command.
Code:
adb push recovery.img /sdcard/
And,
Code:
adb push su-2.3.6.3.zip /sdcard/
Then,
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Ur phone will go to fastboot and should look like the after picture above. Now you can flash the twrp recovery, so do,
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
It will ouput something like this,
Code:
sending 'recovery' <5068 KB>... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... OKAY
finished. total time: 11.355s
Now you have twrp recovery, so you can navigate to it. On ur phone, use the power button to pick bootloader, then scroll down to recovery and pick that. You will then be booted into recovery.
Here you can pick "install zip" and then pick the "su-2.3.6.3.zip"
It will flash, the you can pick "back to main menu", then "reboot system now"
You will boot back up and have working Superuser. I have had no trouble with Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, Quick Boot or any other app that requires root. Before you do too much, it would be good to go back to recovery and do a Nandroid backup. Always best to get one ready before you start modding anything.
There is a limitation with HTC's unlock, recovery does not have permission to write to the boot partition, this is where the kernel goes. What this means is that you can't flash a kernel through the normal recovery. Which also means that you can't flash a ROM that requires a custom kernel. There are two ways that I know of to work around this. One is to just flash the kernel(boot.img) from fastboot, the other, and easier way is to boot recovery from fastboot and just do everything from there.
If you are on hc with unlocked boot loader then this shoud do it
Recovery can be found here
http://www.filesonic.com/file/3297714914/revolutionary-cwm-4.0.1.4-flyer.hboot0011.img
Commands to flash while in fastboot on your device
fastboot flash recovery recovery_name.img
Once you have recovery you need this
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-3.0-beta4-efgh-signed.zip
You place this on your external sd. Get into recovery, install zip from sd, select su-3.0-beta4-efgh-signed.zip

Help please!
I'm new in Flyer flashing. Earlier I was root htc vision and evo 3d, so I know something basic. My Flyer is unlocked but s-on, the former owner unlocked it, I think with htc dev. Now I wanna s-off my device. My question is, do I need to go from the begining with htcdev or I can just contine with downgrade and s-off, because I don't have the htcdev unlock folder?
Thanks in advanced!
Cheers

Is simply straight forward. I have to create new thread bcoz i can see many frens asking about this in various thread.
Unlock (HTC Method may void warranty, i dont care ) + CWM = Can flash any custom rom
[1] register @ htcdev [dot] com
[2] just follow on-screen instruction until successfully boot with unlocked bootloader
now the important part : (u can use4EXT Recovery Touch (the best. recommended) or Revolutionary custom CWM recovery image)
[3a] 4EXT Recovery Touch (THE BEST) See HERE for more info.
[3b] Revolutionary CWM
(i) download Revolutionary shutteru CWM recovery from here
(ii) reboot device in bootloader mode > fastboot > plug in usb cable until u see FASTBOOT USB on device screen
(iii) now in adb type : fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-shooteru.img
(iv) Done.
[4] To root stock rom,
(i) download Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip and copy to sdcard
(ii) reboot to recovery mode
(iii) select install zip frm sdcard > choose zip frm sdcard > select zip file as in (i) step above > proceed to flash.
Now device is Bootloader Unlocked + CWM recovery + S-ON & ready to flash custom rom.

Relock the bootloader,first,
then ,you can flash rom sihp!!!!
OK, I got mine working. Weird thing was the first time I tried to install su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip, I got an error (Status 0, I believe.. no idea what that means). Re-locked my phone, and unlocked it again and the second time around, it installs just fine.
Now, I can finally use Market Enabler!

I also have a question, what's the difference between S-OFF and S-ON? I unlocked my phone the revolutionary way so I guess I'm S-OFF but I don't get what's the difference, in both case you can flash anything you want?

How Do I Know If My Device Is S-ON Or S-OFF?
That is easy to verify. Simply boot into HBOOT on your device (Volume + Dwn) with fastboot off, and the text on top will show the flag status as either S-OFF or S-ON. A full root generally means S-OFF.
S-OFF – What And Why?
In their devices, HTC have installed a sort of security check whose level is determined by S-OFF/S-ON. Essentially, this security level is a flag stored on the device’s radio that checks signature images for any firmware before it is allowed to be written to system memory. This hinders using any custom ROMs, splash images, recovery etc., and also restricts access to the NAND flash memory. However, when security level is set to S-OFF, the signature check is bypassed, allowing a user to upload custom firmware images, unsigned boot, recovery, splash and HBOOT images, as well as official firmware that has been modified, this enabling maximum customization of your HTC Android device.
Furthermore, S-OFF also reduces restrictions on accessing the NAND flash memory on the device, allowing all partitions (including /system) to be mounted in write mode while the operating system is booted.

Check you have usb debugging enabled.
Google the android sdk and download.
Extract it to somewhere.
Connect the phone and run Adb commands from the command prompt in windows after changing directory to the tools folder in the folder you just extracted.

Ok to do this you need to have android sdk and clockworkmod recovery image (its here on the site somewhere). Then what you do next is put the recovery image in the same folder as your fastboot.exe. after that look on your phone and go to "settings>power" and then uncheck fastboot. After that, get on your command prompt on your pc and redirect to your folder with fastboot (it should have adb.exe also) and type "adb reboot-bootloader. Once your phone revolts into bootloader use the power button and select "fastboot" then plug your phone up to your pc. And at the top it should say "fastboot usb". Then go back too the command prompt and type "fastboot boot recovery cwm.img" (or whatever the name of your recovery image is). Now let it finish, and hit the power button again to exit fastboot. Then select recovery, and flash your ROM from here (it needs to be on your SD card). Hope I helped

I think I may finally be understanding...so if you don't have S-Off, flashing a ROM is a two-step process: fastboot to flash protected memory, and then from recover to flash system and data partitions?
Given a particular image, how do I know which fastboot keywords to use? How do I flash a kernel, for example?

2. After flashing rom and confirming that it does freeze.. Boot into bootloader (Power+volume down key) and press the power button while highlighted over fastboot.
3. Plug in your device into PC or MAC

5. EXTRACT the .zip file of the ROM that you are using that freezes.
6. Open the folder and copy the boot.img from that ROM
7. Paste that .img into the folder that has your adb and fastboot files for the Android SDK!
8. in terminal navigate to that folder, and do the following commands

Your problem lies in your HBOOT 1.5.... you need to flash the kernel separately, either the way you described it, or I think theres an app called FlashGUI
or just access recovery from fastboot & flash like normal.

Maybe OP doesn't know about it so I'll guide him.
OP, we appreciate you trying to help but if you follow the steps below you should have no problem.
1. Download the Rom you want and place it on your sd card.
2. Plug your phone in to your computer and open a cmd file where 'adb' is located and type "adb reboot bootloader".
3. Your phone will now restart and boot into bootloader. Now type in "fastboot boot recovery.img". Your phone will now boot into your recovery.
(At this point, you can unplug your phone.)
4. Use the recovery as how you normally would and wipe/flash, etc.
Enjoy.

Yes I do this, and I still have to do what I provided up above. Idk what is wrong with my phone.
Your recovery can't flash kernels. Hence the boot loop.
There is a program in the evo3d theme and apps forum for us 1.5 boot loader users to flash the kernel using an app in android then you reboot to recovery and flash rom.
The app is called flash image GUI

this worked for me it was hanging at the htc white logo screen did this steps and the phone passed the first boot logo and it turned on fine!!!
That's due to not flashin a kernel right or you skipped a part of the wipe.
Virus has this guide for flashing the kernel on his page
The problem with using this "Flash Image GUI" is the FACT that if an individual can't boot a ROM, they obviously can't run the apk.
Individuals with HBOOT 1.5 have two choices in this situation (bootloop)...
Either
1. "adb reboot bootloader" after which you run "fastboot boot recovery.img" (recovery.img must be placed in fastboot directory), then you flash the ROM/kernel in question...
Or
2. Flash boot.img through fastboot (which is what the above "should" do in the fist place).
BTW: If you always have a problem with bootloops, you aren't loading recovery the way you should...
You can either run the commands mentioned earlier in this post, or go to
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.pho?t=1403148
and download the batch in the second post "jthein1989_batch.zip" (you will still need to download and copy the recovery.img to the folder).
Just download twrp or clockwork and copy it as "recovery.img" to the directory that you unzipped the batch to... Then, just follow the OP of my thread...

But you mean you can't select Recorery from Hboot menu? Even if you installed twrp? I don't know much of what I'm doing only had 3d for week. but its locks up at white HTC screen all the time.
Or you could try...

With HBOOT 1.5 you "can" start recovery without ABD, but "S-ON" will not allow you to properly flash to the BOOT partition (limitation of the HTC unlock method). Therefore, users with HBOOT 1.5 need to go to extra lengths to flash the BOOT partition.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Having HBOOT 1.5, I've ran into this very problem. I'm not sure if it's hardware or what, but my phone will not run any Sense 3.5 ROM's I've tried. The phone just won't boot! I gave up trying 3.5 ROM's. I used ABD to put a 3.0 kernel back on and restore the recovery and everything is fine again. This will probably be my last HTC phone. Hoping something better besides the S2 is coming soon.
Rooted my original 3d easily. Had to order a replacement and unlocked the bootloader with htcdev method. Now I cannot seem to flash recovery. Tried twrp 1.1, 2.0, 2.1 using PG86IMG through the bootloader.. finds the file , gets to parsing then stops....any suggestions?

Tried the htcdev unlock but my phone still shows locked. ! good thing is it is still s-off though and hope that will make the rooting process easier. Go to the Dev section and search there for the information to root.
Maybe try a different recovery file
Have you tried any other recovery files? I believe i had the issue too when trying to flash recovery, I ended up having to use CWM by revolutionary.

Rooted my original 3d easily. Had to order a replacement and unlocked the bootloader with htcdev method. Now I cannot seem to flash recovery. Tried twrp 1.1, 2.0, 2.1 using PG86IMG through the bootloader.. finds the file , gets to parsing then stops....any suggestions?

a few things here....
your NAND internal memory is not unlocked (meaning you are "s-on") so you cannot flash recoveries through the bootloader if i am not mistaken.
install adb, and use adb to flash recovery.
either way, using adb will get the job done.
here is the command:
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img
fastboot reboot
My understanding is the best recovery to use with HBOOT 1.5 is 4EXT as it allows you to SmartFlash ROM's with S-On. Check that out first and see if it helps with your issues.

He is HTC unlocked, which unlocks the NAND without touching the S-ON flag. Only the boot partition remains locked.
@OP
You cant flash unsigned PG86IMGs. So flash the recovery using fastboot.
Put your recovery.img in fastboot folder and Boot into boot loader > select fastboot > connect to PC > open command prompt > navigate to fastboot folder > type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" (without quotes).
then check if it works...
hope this helps.................

-Unlock the boot loader using HTCDev
-Use HTCSuperTools v3 to gain root access
-Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
-Flash any ROM you want.
These are the basic steps. I might write up an updated, more detailed guide for others when I get back to a computer.

Go to http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
Register, select your device and unlock the bootloader
Get HTC Super Tools from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343114
Run it, do options 1 and 3, in that order, to root your phone
Get Clockwork Recovery Mod from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290841
Use 1st step for S-OFF method to install ClockworkRecovery
Boot into Recovery mode and take a backup of your ROM
Download the ROM of your choice and copy it to your SD card
Boot into Recovery Mode, do a data wipe/factory reset and a cache wipe
Select Install from zip in Recovery, navigate to your ROM in SD Card and install it. Hope this helps.
This is a long process, at least for the first timers. You may get stuck at various places, please let us know if you do
Unlock the boot loader using HTCDev
-Use HTCSuperTools v3 to gain root access
i download this two items and i try to root it but it dosen't work with me or maybe i did something wrong
what is the steps that i have to follow by using them
and thanks for your replies
Regards
sometimes it says like this
C:\Android>fastboot oem get_identifier_token
< waiting for device >
...
and it stuck for along time and nothing changed
and other times when i press power button for the fastboot it change to be like this
(bootloader) [ERR] Command error !!!
OKAY [ 0.008s]
finished. total time: 0.008s
C:\Android>fastboot oem get_identifier_token
...
FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))
finished. total time: 4.670s
All I can think of is that you should start again reading every step carefully.
Also, jc36 that's a great guide

clarify jc36 clockwork recovery mod step
I need to clarify something important for the "Get Clockwork Recovery Mod step which says to follow the 1st step for S-OFF method to install ClockworkRecovery.
On the linked page http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1290841
Where it says the following:
"How to use S-OFF user
Download file and move on adb fastboot folder"
Does "move on adb fastboot folder" mean, put the file into the folder? And if so where is the folder?
There is no such folder: "adb fastboot folder"?
Does it mean:
1. put it in the Android folder created (C:\android) to hold the files instructed by HTC Dev for unlocking the bootloader?
2. Or put it in the android-sdk folder, somewhere? May be the Platform Tools folder where adb.exe exists?
Thanks to anyone who can help clarify this step for me
Yes it means put the recovery into the folder with adb.exe and fastboot.exe

Thanks again
Thanks for clarifying that. As you can imagine I am a noob. It would be awesome if the brief procedure by jc36 could be expanded upon into an exact step-by-step (hand-holding) for all the noobs out there. Jumping back and forth between the forum links can get confusing -- especially some of the posts are old... leaving one wonder if the instructions are outdated etc!
May be I will do it if I get through this safely....

Brief is good although I do understand how a noob would want a step-by-step guide. In relation to date, none of the links I gave you were really outdated. The datestamp at the top of the thread might say '6th October 2011, 10:00 AM' but if you look at the bottom of the post it'll say something like 'Last edited by (username); 21st March 2012 at 09:32 AM' on threads/posts that get updated. Welcome to the Legend forums!
Further Clarification
I am continuing with my quest to clarify and document the whole jc36 procedure accurately.
1. After you have unlocked the bootloader are there any mode changes to be made before running SuperTools?
2. After running SuperTools, following the 1st step for S-OFF Clockwork Recovery Mod how do you put the phone into "fastboot" mode? Does the phone have to be disconnected again, powered down, restart with volume held down, highlighting Fastboot then press Power button and reconnecting to computer? Is this the procedure or is there another way while it still connected to the computer?
3. Continueing with Clockwork Recovery Mod code where it says:
"In fastboot mode:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery_legend_5.0.2.8.img"
I'm guessing the code above is for command prompt for the c:\android directory as done previously for HTC Dev unlocking of the bootloader?
Open up command prompt. ( Start> Run> Type CMD,).
Command Prompt: cd c:\Android)
Type in Command Prompt:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery_legend_5.0.2.8.img
Correct?
4. After completing Clockwork recovery Mod it says to "Boot into Recovery mode and take a backup of your ROM" -- again do you disconnect the phone to do this and boot into the bootloader to select Recovery mode? And how to you backup? Is it to an SD card or is the phone connected to the computer to take the backup to your hardrive?
Thank you to all in advance who take the time to go over these questions.
1. By mode changes I'm assuming you mean something like enabling USB debugging which is definitely recommended.
2.You get into fastboot mode by rebooting into the bootloader (Hold volume down+trackball+power button). Fastboot is the first selected option so all you have to do is press the power button to choose it and then it will go into fastboot mode
3.Yes in command prompt you navigate to the folder that has adb.exe, fastboot.exe and the recovery image and then carry out those commands
4.If you've flashed a ROM that supports it then in phone options(hold down power button) you can select Reboot and then Recovery. Otherwise to get to recovery you would have to go through the bootloader. To backup you go to Backup and Restore in CWM and select Backup or alternatively you can use ROM Manager to do a backup. The phone doesn't have to be disconnected and the backups are made to the micro SD Card.

run in to trouble at the beginning
I have run into an error with the command provided with HTC Dev Unlock Bootloader.
I have followed all instructions very carefully. When in command prompt I get this error after entering:
fastboot oem get_identifier_token
...
<bootloader> [ERR] Command error !!!
I am in the android directory in c:\android and have the three files there:
adb.exe
adbWinApi.dll
fastboot (which I extracted from an older version of SDK as instructed by HTC because it doesn't exist in the latest SDK software)
Is your phone connected with USB Debugging on and HTC drivers installed on your computer?
bootloader now unlocked successfully
I just flashed the RUU that HTC Dev recommended for my phone, the version it should have before attempting to unlock the bootloader.
My phone originally had this updated version anyway so I never updated it on my first attempt.
After reading the forums here for people having similar issues I flashed their recommended RUU for the Legend and from that point on the command in command prompt worked. I have now unlocked the bootloader ...
what about gapps?
I finally rooted my phone and flashed cm7.2 ROM successfully after some nail biting experiences... it is not as simple as the instructions posted earlier in this forum make it appear... There were some issues I ran into. I will post an explanation of how I resolved them soon.
What good is a new android ROM without essential Google apps? I know they are not packaged due to licensing but I can not find a reasonable explanation of how to get them on my phone. I thought it would be simple but it is not. Right now I can not download any apps...
I read the gapps packages should be installed during the flashing of the ROM... that point is missing from the instructions here! So what now? Do I have to run through the process of flashing the ROM again along with the gapps package this time?
I tried installing the latest Google Play app but it would not connect to the server -- whatever that means -- after entering in my google account.
Is there any way to get the apps downloaded directly to my computer so I can copy them to the SD card? I did find a couple of solutions to do this but you need to enter google account details and some id number for the phone which I can not find... what is the identifier for the phone and where?
Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated because at this point the whole new fresh ROM is useless...
You can flash GApps at any time. Whether it's during installation, right after first boot, or years later. Make sure you flash the appropriate .zip.
You can use APK Downloader to get them straight from the Play Store to your computer in .APK format.
http://codekiem.com/2012/02/24/apk-downloader/
All the latest Gapps packages can be found here. Use the 'gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip' package if you're running Gingerbread and 'gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip' if you're running ICS.
I need a bit more help please!
I have had the legend for ages and wanted to breath new life into it. I am using a ssensation as my everyday phone and that was a doddle to root compared to this!
I have gotten as far as flashing recovery. I dl'd the S-OFF .img from here and placed it in my adb folder. I tried running the adb command and only got as far as
"fastboot flash recovery" when
"error: neither -p product specified or ANDROID_PRODUCT_OUT set" shows up.
Any help? the HTCdev and Supertools seemed to go flawlessly for me. My HBOOT was 1.01 and HTCdev changed it to 1.02. It also now has *** LOCKED (OOW) *** at the top. I'm still S-ON too. What's going wrong? There is no su app in the app drawer like there was when I rooted my sensation. do I have to start over? any help would be great!

You do see the words "locked"? that means its "locked" you need to follow the steps provided by htcdev in the email they would have sent you including the unlock.bin file with out those steps you can't do anything, its like its still not rooted.
