OTG cable not working on a I9100G - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm in India and I have a Galaxy S II GT-I9100G (with a TI OMAP SoC) model phone. I've recently purchased a USB OTG cable from eBay for about Rs.360. However when I tested this cable with my phone, it doesn't even detect it. No message of any kind on the notification bar.
I tried the same cable with my friend's phone which is a Galaxy S II GT-I9100 (original model with Exynos SoC) and it worked absolutely fine.
Can anyone tell me what is missing in my phone that it is not working. Is this the case only with me or others having I9100G faced similar issues? If so, did any one find a solution for this. This is a very good feature to connect pendrives to the phone directly to copy files. But it is not working for me.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Santhosh

Is the phone detectable by Kies? . have you updated firmware recently.Do a factory reset and try again.

Yes. i have recently updated from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 via OTA updates and ever since my phone is not detected by Kies. also when i connect my phone to my laptop, phone's built-in storage drive is not accessible as well.
I've fixed the 2nd issue (accessing USB storage) by dialling *#7284# and using the PhoneUtil feature. But Kies will not detect my phone yet and the OTG cable is not being detected. i've bought the cable only recently after the updated to 2.3.6 and so no idea if it would have worked before the update.
One last question. when i do a factory reset all the data is lost. So if I take a backup of all the apps and data before the reset and then use the data to restore everything after the reset, will the OTG cable not being detected problem also come back after the restore ?

I got my OTG cable today from ebay.plugged in my usb drive and it was detected instantly but contents were inaccessible. It was due to ntfs file system. After formatting with FAT32 I could use it normally.

Are you in 2.3.4 or 2.3.6 ?
I'm going to do factory reset now and will post the result after I test it post the rest.

Hi Santhosh, go ahead with factory reset from privacy menu after backing up data.It will solve all your problems with Kies and OTG.Nothing to loss if you back up the data.Mine also suffered usb problem after the update. After factory reset everything worked normally.Hope this helps

Lucky you. Everything worked for you after the factory reset. There is no use in my case. Mass storage and Kies interface is working perfectly. However, USB OTG cable is still not working. I do not understand where is the problem.
I too have same I9100G with 2.3.6 version as you but why is the OTG cable not working in mine is what i can't understand.

Try another pendrive or usb mouse/keyboard.Ensure cable is inserted properly. Is it beacuse of PhoneUtil procedure?

Bingo. Factory reset actually worked. Thanks mate.
Yesterday after the reset I was connecting the cable and then the pen drive but it didn't work. Today I tried connecting the pen drive to the cable first and then to the phone and it worked. USB keyboard is also working. Hurray!!!

Is your phone detectable on the pc via kies?
Try connecting the pendrive to the cable and then connect the cable to the phone. It doesn't work the other way.

So you proved the Galaxy S II is not compatible with USB On The Go

OTG function is absolute working on S2 i9100g
Hi all,
Don't worry if you are facing problem regarding the OTG cable not working on S2 G model because I have checked it. It is working very fine actually most of cheap type cable are not proper desingned that's why they are not working . Take the branded/Genuine S2 cable and see it.
I am using i9100G with my home made OTG cable the S2 G is very good phone.
A9 processor is up to the mark, Galaxy note has also A9 chip..............
Enjoy......................

Ok, It got solved yesterday this way:
You do not need to reinstall drivers on PC.
You do not need to reinstall ROM or anything on your phone.
You do not need *# special codes.
You do not need a new cable or change USB port or change your phone for a new one.
It seems to me that somehow (probably for debugging, connecting and disconnecting several times) the phone locks itself in a state where it is unable to connect again through USB although it charges.
So how did I solve it? I executed this actions several times even in different order some times: disabled debugging, disconnected cable, restarted phone, connected cable, (still not recognizing), tryed to USB Theter (even when the option was disabled), reenable debugging.
Out of nothing i noticed the USB icon was there again in my phone and i was able to debug copy files etc again.
I tried disconnecting and conneceting again and it kept working correctly.
I hope this helps someone else with the same problem and probably someone fixes the bug on the OS.
Cheers!

[Q] Computer not recognizing usb connector.

Hi all,
All up until a few days ago, my computer/s cannot recognise my Samsung Galaxy S2. Whenever I connect my phone to my computer, the phone believes I am plugging in the charger.
I have attempted to turn on/off USB debugger, attempted the USB mass storage connection method and also attempted to use Winamp's automount option.
I thought it could have been my cable and I have tried different cables and phones and it seems my phone is the only problematic one.
Before this issue, usb used to connect very easily, even used for my car headunit.
Yesterday I was running the 2.3.6 firmware and recently changed to 4.0.3 and neither allow the usb to be working.
Has anyone encountered this problem and does anyone have a solution for this problem?

Did the USB work on previous firmware if so you have messed up the install revert to older stock rom firmware and test .
jje
It didnt stop working due to a firmware upgrade. It randomly stopped working when I was using 2.3.6 so i thought maybe upgrading would do the trick, which it did not.
Try doing a factory reset..
Yeah, did a factory reset when I changed from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3 and just tried again. No difference.
I did notice that this error may have occurred when I may have dropped the phone. Not too sure how this would affect anything but just putting it out there.
Did you drop it with the usb connected?
Sounds like its a hardware problem, just try flashing stock again to be 100%

ICS is not an upgrade its an unstable beta rom not passed by Samsung for use .
Possible dirty USB ports .
jje
How would one proceed with cleaning the usb ports?
In the past I happened to have trouble connecting with the usb port and I solved unistalling and reinstalling Kies. Have you already tried?
I believe what I'm attempting to do is to even use the phone as a mass storage device. I used to be able to do this via straight windows to any computer and even my car headunit. However at the moment a cable is only recognised as a power source and not as a data connection.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=438400
just gave this a go, going to leave it overnight to dry. wish me luck
No luck but I have concluded that the USB port possibly could be broken. I'm wondering, does rooting the phone void warranty?
Unfortunatelly it does...
Wipe everything U can, flash back original firmware and do reset with factory JIG... Than U have chance to claim warranty. But its not 100%...
There is thred about reverting somewhere...

Try again but after restarting ur computer !
Does the computer see any external drives (whether you can connect to them or not)?
Does the computer make a noise when you connect or disconnect the phone?

[Q] Cannot Connect to KIES using USB...Tried all suggestions found here

Hi,
I am a moderately experienced owner of S2 which has the following details
from *#1234#
PDA:I9100XWKF3
PHONE : I9100DDKE4
CSC: I9100ODDKF3
Country:India
from about phone(in settings)
Model # : GT - I9100
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version : I9100DDKE4
Kernel Version : 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555 [email protected]#2
Build number : GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
I heard there was a KIES firmware update for my phone and so wanted to update. I installed KIES into my laptop and when I fired it up it notified of a KIES software update(update of KIES itself) and after updating KIES,I connected my phone which was detected properly.
I did the firmware update subsequently and after that the problem started. When I connect my phone using USB to the laptop, nothing happens, the phone doesnt charge even. Everything else works fine. I searched various forum posts but none of them work
1. Tick/Untick the USB debugging checkbox at Settings>Applications>Development - did not work
2. type *#7284#, toggle PDA <-> MODEM. didnt work
3. One curious thing is that, if I connect the phone after the phone is fully booted, it is not detected and the phone doesnt charge at all. But if connect the phone when it is switched OFF and then Switch it on, the phone does charge but still is not detected.
4. The cable is not faulty as it works perfectly with other samsung phones(Fit etc...).Also, its not the problem with my laptop as other mobiles are detected fine on my laptop.
pls help
Couple of things to try
1 Check the pins of the bottom of the phone?
2 Uninstall Kies and drivers, and reinstall?
The pins seems to be fine, anything specific I should look for?..and I have tried connecting in other systems with KIES and still the same problem. My friend's android phones connect fine in all the systems. Even if it was KIES drivers problems, shudnt it atleast charge the cell??
Rule one is use official Samsung USB cable
Rule two is use a mainboard USB Port .
jje
Hmm, It is a official samsung cable.
I did not understand what u meant by mainboard port?? I am not using any hub if that whats you meant. I am thinking it is an issue because of the firmware update.
I was actually thinking of getting the firmware update and subsequently, after backing up using clockworkmod, I was thinking if getting either villianROM or revolutionROM. Now, backing up is out of question as the present firmware is broken. So, If I go ahead with the flashing, what options do I have if I want it to get to factory state for warranty purposes.
Connecting the AC charger when phone is switched on, will initiate charging?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
yes. Normal charging happens fine. So its not the pins I guess.

How about a factory reset? Try that!
sorry, should have mentioned that. I did factory reset twice and then went into recovery mode and did a wipe and clean and cleaned the cache too.
So, alternatively where can I get the stock rom/firmware for the specs i provided above. I found a thread where various firmware were provided but one compatible with my kernel..csc etc,, was not there
I appreciate u all replying. I tried on the indian thread but nobody seems to feel it worth replying.
Mainboard or motherboards USB port only .

Usb port of my Samsung infuse 4G isn't wotking, when connected it charges but pc doesn't recognize. I've tried with different USB cables. when camera is opened it gets stuck and shows black screen. i thought this could be a problem with ROM but i was unable to update ROM as my PC doesn't recognize it, i'm able to enter download mode using OSB jig but still odin doesn't recognize it. it has Android 2.2.1 installed on it and it has not been rooted. Any help would be highly appreciated thanks in advance!!

did you try to make a backup of your contacts on your SD card and do a factory reset of the phone. It might be some setting. It happened to me couple of times on my HTC while working with the HTC stock ROM.
If it didn't work you might try to follow this guide

I am having the same issues. I have 2 of these phones that are doing the same thing. Both have been rooted but NO new ROMS have been downloaded. Both phones worked fine with the stock USB cable until 2 days ago & I haven't been able to get either to be recognized by 2 seperate computers. One is Win 7 32bit, the other is XP. I can get them to show 2 portable drives; however, when I click on either, or try to drag & drop in them, it tells me to insert a disk.About to go ape crappers! HELP!
I have this exact same problem on my Infuse: USB port works for charging but the computer doesn't recognize it and the device acts as if I plugged it into a USB -> AC power adapter, and when I bring up the camera it's just a black screen and controls that don't do anything. I just tried resetting to factory defaults, even rooted it and flashed to another ROM (ZEUS) and it's still having the same problems. I'm just wondering whether it's a hardware or software problem. Anybody figured out a fix yet?

[Q] Reset custom flash counter without working touchscreen

Hello everyone, tried to find an answer via the search but it seems I am the only one with this perticular situation.
I was running the, not yet, released samsung galaxy S3 4.2.2 ROM by samsung, when my touchscreen stopped working. It's the international version GT-I9300. A factory reset didn't solve it so I flashed the latest official rom, which I got from samfirmwares via odin 3.07. This didn't solve the problem either. As I pretty confident that my touchscreen is really broke I want to send it for repair but I have to reset my custom flash counter to do so. The standard way (Triangle Away app) is not possible because I can't install an app as the touchscreen isn't working. Windows does see my phone if connected via USB so I can copy files to the SD card but I'm not able to use ADB because adb doesn't list my device. Probably because usb debugging isn't switched on, on the phone. The reason I wanted to use adb is to use android screencast to remote control my phone.
Is there another way to reset the custom flash counter, or is there a way to get adb working without having the usb debugging mode on.
Many thanks!
Wait, how did you do a factory reset when your touchscreen is not working ? :screwy:
