Thinking of switching sprint to verizon... - HTC EVO 3D

I have been with sprint since 1999.
I am finally fed up with abysmally slow data speeds. .010 up and down. On my 3rd 4g phone and still no 4g, even paying the extra $10 a month for "premium" data. I think the $10 is just to make the little icon turn on on the phone, and thats it.
I was looking at verizon. Does anyone recommend any phones or plans?
I hear great things, except for the data cap.
But I am willing to suffer the data cap. Even though I have an unlimited data plan now, I still would be nice to have DATA.
Sprint needs to update their network from smoke signals to dial up speed. I hear thunderbolt is the phone to get? Is it rootable? Can you tether on verizon?

yeah, like last year.
IF you're going to switch, get the Galaxy Nexus. otherwise.. you can wait for sprint's nexus.

I am thinking of doing the exact same thing. Only problem I have is I am still in contract until the end of this year. I have a co-worker who owns the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus and it is VERY nice. I have also heard good things about the Moto Razr. Verizon is currently offering their doubling their caps on data. I think the 2gb is now 4gb until Jan. 15th but double check.
It is difficult to switch to Verizon because it costs around $40 more per month but I feel like I am paying $100 too much per month with Sprint. The data speeds are horrific. I get no more than 300kbps down and my co-worker gets 1.5meg on Verizon 3g and at LEAST 8megs on Verizon LTE. It is embarrassing and extremely annoying how slow my data is.
Anyway...good luck to you on your switch. I will make the switch at the end of this year.

Switch if you need to switch, but before try asking some knowledgeable sprint employees about any planned network improvements in your area, because if you leave and then the forever promised upgrades start really happening you might be regretting your decision
But then again if you got the cake go head and switch

How do you find someone knowledgeable at Sprint? I cannot find anyone dialing the customer service number and tech numbers that can give any definitive info on tower upgrades.
Trying not to be sarcastic.

I switched one month ago to Verizon after being with Sprint for 9 years. Even though I have a data cap and my bill is about 30 bucks higher. I am so glad I did. I didn't realize how bad sprints data service was until switching. Sure the price is a bit higher, but I am ok with it since I actually have 4g.
I did go with the Thunderbolt even though in cell phone age it is old. The reason, because it is rootable. I had a hard time not going with the Rezound because it was pretty slick, but it's only temproot capable. If you couldn't tell, I prefer HTC...
Anyways, Verizon has a deal online you can get double the data for the same price. So I have 22 gigs of data to use. I live in the country and have no other source of highspeed internet than my phone. While using tethering, using my xbox360, youtube, and netflix I have only hit 12 gigs so far... Of course 8 gigs of that was in one weeks time.
If you don't want to sign up online. Go to a retail store and show them that you can get double data by buying online and they should be able to hook you up with the same deal. That is what I did without any problems. They even matched the price of the Thunderbolt to what it was going for online with contract.

Hurry up and switch if you are... Verizon has 4gb of data for the same price until the 15th... just a suggestion.

I switched to Verizon after having sprint for over 4 years. I got the galaxy nexus. There's a loophole to get unlimited data, but that might be closed. There's a thread in the rezound forums about it. I had originally got the 10 gig plan but got unlimited data using the loophole. With my discounts its actually cheaper than what I was paying on sprint and I actually have awesome data speeds on top of 4g.

I was thinking about switching to Verizon but I don't know yet, I'm still on the fence. I kind of want to wait and see how Sprint's LTE do first.

i am currently on two lines one with sprint and the other with verizon.
i took over another person's old unlimited plan so there's no way verizon will drop my plan. I am not too sure how verizon will react to all the people using the loophole.
450mins unlim data iphone 4 32gb right now and they upgraded the line early for free! i have a 4s getting ready to be sold online. i havent really been able to use data much. but verizon is definitely alot faster thats for sure.
i also have sero premium. using the evo 3d. is it true i can use the marqueee and not pay the additional 10 bucks a month?

No advice here but let us know how it is over there

I read somewhere they had a "Team" that was auditing accounts and shutting this down. Like actually removing it from accounts that found the loophole.

sad thing is, alot of people seem to be on the same line of thought, used to be that you could justify the crappy signal cause you were paying 50-75 less than any other carrier. Now they just keep closing that price gap making it harder to stay with it. Myself, I'm about ready to take my 4 lines to att or vzn. if I lower my minutes (which I never use) I can actually get it cheaper.
sad, paid for 4g never saw it..for either montgomery, ny, and now I'm near DC.. now lte pipedreams...

Dude. Make the switch. I always thought I couldn't justify paying more for less perks than I had with Sprint. The coverage and data speeds are worth every penny. To my surprise I actually pay less with my employer discounts. I had every intention to go into Verizon paying more though.
The difference is night and day.

My 4g on the galaxy nexus is 15down minimum unlimited $30

I hear ya.. I probably should. I'm just afraid of a whole new set of issues when switching. I've read a good share of their horror stories too, I may try a single line and carry that around and see how it does.

I've been with Sprint for >10 years now, mainly because it was the best overall deal around. However, lately they have been getting rid of the perks that made them a better choice for me over Verizon or AT&T. I have been toying with the idea of moving my 3 lines over to Verizon, actually visited a Verizon store over the xmas break. Now I hear that Sprint is cancelling their employee discount on all lines except the primary line and that has done if for me. Feb 1 I am going to fight to get out of my contract based on the "adverse material change to my contract" and switch to Verizon. If Sprint is going to charge me as much as Verizon and AT&T then they need to provide the same level of service as the others. My 150kbs speeds are a joke, especially when I'm paying (and have been for going on 2 years now) a $10 surcharge for "premium data".

Sprint reportedly cancelling its early upgrade program June 1st

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/sprint-cancelling-early-upgrades/
(memo is in the link above)
Like dominoes, Sprint's consumer-friendly policies continue to fall one at a time. Citing "high costs," the Now Network will begin discontinuing its practice of allowing customers to upgrade their phone 10-14 days prior to the official date of eligibility. According to the memo leaked by TechnoBuffalo, the program will cease to exist as of June 1st. It sounds like this policy change is an unfortunate consequence of the company's large investments in iPhones and its still-dormant LTE network. It may not be enough to convince many Sprint customers to jump ship, but this isn't the first cost-cutting measure put forth by Dan Hesse's team -- and we have a hard time believing it will be the last. We've reached out to Sprint for official comment and will update you as soon as we have word.

not sure why this is that big of a deal? is that really that much of an incentive?
unless your early eligibility window directly coincided with a major phone release (like the iphone5 which i hear has the same cloaking capability as Predator and is run by cold fusion with a display that beams directly to your brain) and you HAVE to be the first one to get it...then who cares if you have to wait until you are actually eligible for the upgrade to get it??

Yes it will definitely happen at some point. everywhere the iPhone goes eliminates the "unlimited Data Plan".
Verizon today also said that they're no longer allowing people to be grandfathered in. So no unlimited for anyone.
But i agree, this isn't that big of news too me but it is somewhat heartbreaking to see. First they destroyed the Premiere Members plan and now this.

IMO that'd be their kiss of death. It's the ONLY advantage they have compared to ATT and VZ. With all the other niggling changes (the change in how discounts are applied, the change in how shared plans are accounted for, etc) they are barely ahead of VZ in price for me (4 4G phones - what where's 4g?? - and 1 basic phone, and i can get away with 4gb data most months no problem) and if the network doesn't get better, i'm gone, let alone how fast I'd bail if they limited their unlimited...

I still do not believe that iPhone has made connection slow for others and Sprint has said (if their truth to it or not) that iPhone has not slowed down data speeds for us other phones.
iPhone is not the problem, it's people who are with VZW who obviously don't mind paying a premiere price for their phone bills. Sprint is playing catch up with these other companies and becoming more and more of a elite company. no more of this VZW>ATT>SPRINT crap. they will be the 3 headed monsters in due time

It probably cost more money to update the staff & the system on the few minutes they took to address it.

Very possible it will. I've read an article (PCWorld, I think it was) that explained it clearly. Each carrier purchases/rents a certain amount of data spectrum. Verizon and AT&T started throttling and limiting data because usage on their respective spectrums were getting close to the limit. NOW, taking that into consideration, Sprint very literally owns/rents half of the spectrum that Verizon and AT&T do. So, what does that tell you? Eventually, even though they are not ready to state it publicly, chances are Sprint will abandon unlimited data.

True story, sir.
The thing is that Sprint always releases their flagship HTC phone in about the middle of May. Many people's upgrade date is June 1st, so that 14 days allows people who want to upgrade have the ability too pre-order. Now I hope that Sprint and HTC work together and make their flagship phone released on June 1st.

Honestly guys do you really think the Iphone is what pulls in the data? I'll give you an example. With my evo 3D, I pulled in over 9GB's last month on 3G and a little 4G(no torrenting) but both of my sisters own the iphone and they used 4 GB's together on our shared plan. One is somewhat tech-savvy but is on it constantly while the other uses it mainly for phone and pandora. Most iphone users don't know how to rape the unlimited data plans like I do. It's only going to be unlimited for so long so why not use it up. You want to complain you should complain to the average user on this site. We are the people using up the data not most of the iphone users.

I'd rather not look at it as a "use as much as I can while it's still free" situation. If I need to download something significant, I'll use my home computer on broadband. I rarely download new ROMs directly with my phone. I'd rather not contribute to Sprint even having to consider throttling by only downloading what I need to with my phone so I can use more when I really have to.

sprint shouldn't consider throttling because people are downloading things with their phone, thats the whole point of havnig an unlimited data plan, to not have to nit pick when and which files to download
it'd be different if i was downloading movies to my phone, to then transfer to my computer instead of just using my computers broadband, but why wouldn't a user with unlimited data download a file through the phone, when the file is for the phone?
lets all stop streaming music also, i mean we could download it with our computers, then transfer it to our phones, then make a playlist, that'd save sprint from having to throttle!

It does me. It's the only thing that has kept me on Verizon (well, that and my wife. that's another story though ).
Hey guys,
Glad this came up here. So I am grannyd in on my dinc2 (signed 2yr in July) along with a really good old verizon talk/text plan and with a business discount. So all in all things are peachy for me atm.
So here are the problems: the wife has long been up and needs to ditch her iphone from work. Wtf do I do?!
1. Do I wait this out to see what the family plans look like?
2. Or do I upgrade her now onto a 4g phone and get in before the family plans come out? Hell they might actually be ok if priced decently?!
3. Could I get a used 4g phone add that to my unlimited plan?!
4. Should I add her a data line and get her an off contact phone so we aren't locked in for 2yrs?! Is that possible?!
Jezus this is f'd up. These greedy mofos will go down at some point. And here is praying that Google does it from right under their own feet (their own network)

So, assuming the Inc 4G is released before this change goes into effect...
First Question:
Will upgrading to the Inc 4G guarantee that I'll have the unlimited data for the full 24months, or will put the kibosh on it once the shared plans go "live." It seems like contractually, it would be hard for them to do the latter, but given how Verizon hates it's customers, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it.
Second question:
I'm on a family plan and we still have a few people with dumbphones. Suppose they upgrade to smartphones and sign up for a shared plans. Will my unlimited plan just coexist and not be part of that share, or will Verizon say "You can't sign up for any new shared plan without obliterating any unlimited data lines on your account." Again, Verizon hates it's customers, so I would not at all be surprised if they try that second option.

Your 1st question I'm interested in the answer as well,:
Your 2nd question, I'm in the same boat and was told I could keep unlimited as long as the plan doesn't change ie same # of texts etc, but dumb phones upgrading would havto, as of now the 4g tiered plan, not sure if after they ditch unlimited if they'll stroke you into the shared plan though . Anyone know exactly when the unlimited plans will ditched?

When the new options are introduced, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to our customers purchasing handsets and signing a new contract. Customers who choose to purchase phones at full retail price and are currently on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will apply to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.

So, I'm gonna wait at least a little while longer. I now know I don't need to rush out and upgrade today. Sounds like these plans won't start kicking in until "later this year" and they say they'll give plenty of advance notice so I should be able to wait for the DInc 4G to come out but it will be my last true unlimited plan upgrade.

As far as your first question goes, yes upgrading to the Inc 4g before the new plans come out will allow you to keep your unlimited data. And you'all be under contract for another 2yrs with unlimited. Once your contract runs out you'll still be able to keep your unlimited data as long as you pay full retail price for all your phones from that point on. The min you buy a phone at reduced pricing from vzn you'll be forced on to a new teired data plan.
2nd. Question not so sure about but I highly doubt they'll let two different types of data plans coexist on the same plan.

Won't be your last unlimited plan upgrade. Vzn released a follow up statement saying people with unlimited plans will be able to keep them but that they will have to buy their phones at full retail price. Once you upgrade through discounted pricing on a phone, that will be when they'll take your unlimited data away and put you on one of the new plans

verizon really needs to clarify those already on family plans with shared minutes (like me and my wife)...what happens if she wants to upgrade? does that mean i get forced onto shared data with her?

whoa, I'm tmobile too but I have full unlimited data plan, all the bells and whistles and STILL have to pay FULL price for my devices! Complaining does nothing for me! My HTC SENSATION 4g costed me almost 700.00!! One good thing about tmo is you do have the option to take the device home and pay approximately 20.00 a month for the device. This makes it a bit easier than having to pay all at once.! But their data is NOT cheap! I have two lines unlimited data, one equipment charge (20.00)
My bill for last month was 254.00! That seems outrageous to me! I asked about it and they said I can cancel some services I have to lower it, such as hotspot tethering ect. But I need those services. I've been with them for ,4 years, seems like I should at the very least, get a reduced equipment charge! But I still have to pay full price! Complaints get me no where.!

Complaints get me no where.!

complaining may or may not get you anywhere with carriers
a lot depends on who you complain too, how often, what the complaint is, and your history of service and complaining with them
many people have gotten ETF's waived, but it usually takes a series of calls over several weeks and months proving there is something wrong with their lines and services
complaining about your contract and what it contains, depends on what you are up in arms about...i really dont see being able to argue your way into an upgrade AND keeping unlimited data once the family data share plans start...regardless of your circumstances/history (but who knows)
a few years back (2008/9) my wife and i were extremely unhappy with our BB8830s and were each around 8-10 months away from an upgrade (me 4 months into my annual my vzw upgrade, she was half way through a 2 year)...i must have called 25-30 times and spoken to half that many different CR's and supervisors, demanding that they move our upgrade dates up to get the BB Storm (lol, ikr) or that when our contracts were up we would leave for ATT to get the iphone because its what we both really wanted
basically everyone i talked to gave me the "ok, have fun with ATT" talk and refused to do anything except move *1* of our upgrades up by a few months....despite my carrying on that we had been customers since the late 90's (well i had been) it all fell flat
other times, however ive been successful in getting replacement devices with no ?s asked...wife actually dropped her first tbolt and it stopped working (but showed no real damage) and we got it replaced for free w/o insurance...and i got my fascinate replaced with the inc2 when the speaker failed (and the fascinate was actually a used device bought off ebay a few weeks after its launch)
so its all situational i suppose
/end rambling

Won't be your last unlimited plan upgrade. Vzn released a follow up statement saying people with unlimited plans will be able to keep them but that they will have to buy their phones at full retail price. Once you upgrade through discounted pricing on a phone, that will be when they'll take your unlimited data away and put you on one of the new plans

I was at the Verizon store today and asked about them about the Incredible 4g. Said it was supposed to be out this month but its delayed until probably next month. I also asked if it will be out before Verizon kills the unlimited plan and he says they have decided not to do it ans they got a corporate email saying so. Not that I believe them anyway just stating what they said.

Your last sentence said it all... Cardinal rule of Verizon: never believe anything the salespeople say. It's never right.
I was a former in store tech for vzw before they laid us all off and i still have good friends that work as sales reps and one told me he heard a rumor about this taking affect at the end of june. Again its just a rumor but we all know its coming. If i hear anything gurther i will post my findings

probably not true, but i'll jump ship to sprint if that happens
I have nobody to share my data with lol
I'm still on contract till 11/13 . But yeah I can totally see myself sharing data with myself. Sounds legit!:good:
If that does happen, they have to let us out with no ETF. More likely, they'll just stop letting people keep it when their contract expires or when they renew, even if they pay full retail for a phone. They stand to lose an awful lot of customers if they were to just yank it from everybody that still has it, not to mention the internet and media backlash. Then again, it's just that: a rumor.

If they just change your data plan during your contract.. Hello cancellation w/ no ETF!
I'll tell you someone's who getting out of his contract for free if that happens.

That's exactly what I said. And not only that line but every line on your account can cancel if they force them into a shared plan since it affects every line. But I seriously doubt they will just yank them. They have millions of customers with grandfathered plans and millions of those customers will just pack up their phones and leave if that happens. Overnight they could shrink to the number 2 service provider. I'm not saying they'll let us keep our data plans forever, but they're not going to yank everybody at once either because it doesn't make a bit of business sense. It makes a ton more business sense to just let contracts run out and in less than 2 years they won't have any grandfathered subscribers. They may not be making as much money off of people with unlimited data plans but I'm sure that the vast majority of them are still profitable customers and therefore it's better to hang on to them.
To the people that say it's going to happen soon, proof or GTFO.
To reiterate what others have said. I don't think they can just do that, without the contract becoming null and void, if that is the case, then its a breech of contact on their part. They would have to let us out of the contract withput paying ETFs.
My contract is up Nov 2013 and I was told as long as I don't upgrade then I will.be fine.

But April 13 is a long way off. The networks or even companies can shift. Remember there for like 2 years every phone company either sold or bought each other out? In the next year I see companies merging to combat Verizon and not to mention Google's allegedly planned network.

So, ICS for the Rezound was a rumor? Because that hasn't happened?
Oh Wait, though, you might be right. Anything to boost profits will happen, so let's see... ICS OTA for the Rezound makes no money for Verizon (Except back when we were promised it and people bought the phones based on that promise. Shared data plan makes astronomical profits for Verizon, so, likely to happen.
UGH. When will the day everyone would be willing to band together and call Verizon and say "Cancel my contract for your lack of commitment and services and promises for updates." The only action that would ever change Verizon's mind on doing what they do. It all comes back to the idea that Verizon has no incentive to give back what they've took and to make ridiculous plans. People continue to buy, buy, buy their phones and sign contracts.
In the end, it's not Verizon's fault. It's the fault of American Greed. no one does anything about it, so companies, like Verizon, continue to play the game and profit off the lack of revolt for practices.

When more carriers become available more widespread in areas . The only reliable coverage I get in South Dakota where I live and travel to visit back home, is Verizon. Sprint / AT&T are spotty. T-Mobile doesn't exist.
When T-Mobile or Sprint finishes rolling out their LTE networks, will the Rezound be capable of running on either of them?

Switch to Tmobile

I'm really considering switching to Tmobile with all the crap Verizon is pulling. Tmobile offering to pay ETF's. My question is and I'm not sure many devs will come across this but who's all down to switch and say the hell with you Big Red.
With this new talk of Verizon wanting to control Internet traffic. Enough is enough.
So who's all down to teach Verizon to treat their paying customers better?
Also having the unlocked bootloader on Tmo is a plus.
So they pay ETF'S, unlocked bootloaders, and no annual contracts.
I'd love for everyone to go to Tmo the same day and pickup a Note3 unlocked.

Why would you ever do the tmobiles switching program? You have to turn in your phone also making you pay for another note 3, they profit by selling your phone by having money left over after paying the etf. I'm planning on switching by selling my phone for 600+$ paying the etf and I will have over 300$ to pay for another note 3. Verizon can suck my dong, I'm done.
EDIT: And unlimited FU**ING data!

Shoot I accidently liked your post, I don't want to confuse anyone. But how it goes is they will pay your etf if you trade them qualifying phone. That leaves you phoneless with no cash to buy a new phone on tmobile. So to calculate your etf fee is $350 originally - $10 for every month completed of your contract. So mine would be 320$ I think. So if I sell my phone on swappa for 650$ and me pay my etf, I'll have 330$ left for a new phone!! You get it?

Sounds all good but look at T Mo's coverage map. Kinda gargles rhino balls..... most people that will stay with Big Dumb Red is for coverage reasons. In more places than not, if you're off the interstate you're out of luck.
My Sprint LG G2 is on the way. If the coverage has improved since they finally got LTE in my area I'll eventually switch my family over and get another N3. Got the G2 cuz it's free online. Done with Verizon and their locked bootloaders

I gave T-Mobile a go with the $30 plan last month. Service is definitely a keeper in urban areas, but not so rosy elsewhere. I suggest giving the Walmart $30 a go on your Note 3s before dumping your Verizon contract, as unlike AT&T, they aren't buying us back.
I frequent Philly, I95 south of there to NC, and I40 west to AK. Every urban area on that route had superb T-Mobile voice/data performance. However, once you are 5 miles out of the urban areas, you're on Edge. I had never experienced Edge while on a highway before, so I set my assumptions based on the .12mbps speed tests, as in it would be fine for simple web browsing/maps. Unfortunately, it is not very usable on the highway. Edge cannot load even simple web pages quickly, and I find it times out quite often when the phone jumps to a new tower. Don't even think about Google Maps or Pandora. The only other issue is handoffs to AT&T roaming towers, very common in western NC and eastern TN. The handoffs are quite crude, dropping calls and ending your data session.
Verizon is the exact opposite, useless in the cities on that route, but incredible everywhere else. I can maintain LTE the entire 20 hour drive. I dropped the T-Mobile plan, as I am keeping my Verizon UL and the Sprint Student Promo with Nexus 5. However, when I can afford plane tickets between only urban areas and/or Verizon takes away my UL data, I'll dump them for T-Mobile.
All these comments are good information for ultimately making a decision. Thanks guys
The only complaint I have is their service is area is not that good in places. Other than that I have been a happy Tmobile customer.

I'm not talking smack on T Mo at all. Their business plan and service rates are fair and unlocked phones are nice. It's just the service you DONT get if you're a heavy traveler. I use T Mo at home in my sim # 3 spot because I do get good data at the house. When I'm in South Texas oil fields I use my # 2 sim AT&T. If I'm in west Texas oil field I use Big RED. The 3 sim setup is nice and I always have service...... my bill is around $200 a month but it's a write off anyway.
I thought long and hard about the switch because I too am sick of Verizon's BS. But after it's all said and done I'd only be saving $10 maybe $20 a month. I get a discount on my Verizon bill through work that T-Mobile doesn't offer, otherwise the savings would be greater. When it's all said and done I'd rather put up with the BS and pay the extra money for the coverage.

Typical verizon, we don't care if our customers like our crap or are happy, as long as we have them by the gonads, we're happy.
If verizon cancels my unlimited it will void my contract and I will take my 3 lines and 140 dollar a month of business somewhere else.
The ONLY reason Verizon still has my business is for the unlimited plan. Loosing that, looses a customer. Their comstant locking down phones is frusterating.
I'm not on anyone's side just so you know unlimited plans make up less then 5% of their business and no one has LTE or even basic coverage like Verizon.

I get 15 gigs of data for 100$ I also got Verizon to give me 1 gig of data as a promo.
Iv only been with Verizon for about 2yrs.
I work from the Artic Ocean/North Slope of Alaska to South TX. Hands down Verizon rules where I'm at as stated 4G and basic. I had 10 go plan but jumped last month for 30 bucks more to the 30gb plan. For 130 I get 32gb (I also have an additional 2gb of promo) it's not unlimited but for current pricing and comparison to other companies it's the only way to go for me. I think it's like 225 or something crazy now if you want 30gb.
If you are on an unlimited plan and you use more than 30GB...my guess is that Verizon wouldn't mind you leaving their network! Some of you make it seem like Verizon needs your business. lol
Thank you for letting us know about this option. How does one go about getting it? I previously had Unlimited Data. I didn't want to pay the outrageous price at the time for a Note 3 outright from Ebay, Swappa, etc. So I dropped my Unlimited to 6GB. Not that I fully use 6GB anymore. Dropped Spotify once I dropped Unlimited Data. The 10GB would be a nice option.

I see you got digs for all the other carriers. Problem is, people aren't going to continue to get raped with these prices. So, Verizon will keep losing customers until they get better prices and plans.
So, when I lose my unlimited I can either:
- Pay $80/mo. for 1 GB of data on Verizon
or
- Pay $80/mo. for UNLIMITED data on T-Mobile.
That's a no-brainer. I've been a loyal customer of Verizon for years and years. But when my unlimited comes to an end, so will my loyalty because these new plans and pricing are just flat-out garbage.
I'm not going to stay on the same carrier to pay alot more and get alot less. Never going to happen.
