Hello All: who has tried SD cards >32GB on the SGH-I777? What's your impression? Do they work, which ones, and how well? There are threads on 64GB SDs working on other devices, but nothing recent on the GS2 (I777). So what's the deal?

I saw a YT vid of one being used in a GSII a few months back. It wasn't available to the public yet but it showed that the phone recognized the card and read all 64gigs. From what I hear, there's a 64gig card available now and a few members have them but I haven't heard how well they work.

Thanks! Yes, I saw that too but it's several months old now and I have not seen anything new. There is now a class 10 from Transcend - wonder if anybody tried it. I really like to hear from people using the 64GB cards (or higher).

Sd cards > 32GB is called SDXC cards. the smallest is 64GB. They typically come pre-formated with exFat which our phone doesn't support. You will have to use PC to re-format it into FAT32 using large cluster size before you can use it on the phone (the hardware of the phone supports SDXC cards
As I understand it, the phone supports SDXC.
Many 64GB SDXC cards are comming formatted as regular FAT which will work in our phone.
The SDXC standard officially calls out an exFAT filesystem - exFAT will NOT work.

Class rates the write performance of a card (in MB/sec). So a class 10 card has a write performance of at least 10MB/s (write speed varies depending on the size of data). Typically, cards read much faster than write (on average 2x faster).

Thanks. I read somewhere in another forum that someone was using a 64GB class 10 card formatted as FAT32 and got ~5MB/sec, suggesting that the format slows the card. My current 32GB micro SD gives me also ~5MB/sec (guessing its a class 4/5 without pulling it out), so a 64GB at 5MB/sec would be ok. I will get me one and report back. Just not sure yet which one. Sandisk? Samsung (haven't seen that one online yet).

Class performance is only measured on a specific test... and can sometimes not be indicative of real-world results.
Sometimes people find that a Class 6 card does better overall than a Class 10, just due to being "better" in real world aspects other than what were tested for the class rating.
The class rating MIGHT only be raw write performance - the format of a card can have a major effect on performance depending on the underlying flash memory. For example, I recall a bunch of 4GB CF cards that got a HORRIFIC performance reputation at work - after further investigation, it turned out the only problem was that Windows defaulted to FAT32 on those cards, but FAT16 on smaller ones. The 4GB card formatted FAT16 was wicked fast.
My current class 2 16GB microSD card can give me 6MB/s write speed when I copy a small to medium sized file over. However, when I copy muiple or much larger files, the speed will eventually drop to 2MB/s. Most cards, especially cheaper ones, use a small cache to speed up the write performance and hide the slower flash memory. When you writes more than the cache can hold, the true performance of the card shows up. That's why a brand named card costs much more than no-name brands of the same class rating.

Actually, the cache is the phone's RAM, not the card.
I love my 64gb card. $100 shipped from bestbuy. I want to buy one for my tablet.

No, I'm testing it on my PC with 8GB of RAM directly. Don't trust phones for that task
My understanding is that most SD cards has a small block of flash cells that's much faster than rest of the cells. Small data chunks get write into those fast flash cells first before they write into the much slower mass storage cells. So, if you copy a large file into the SD card, you will see the write performance slowly drop as the cache fills up.
Aren't there 64GB cards that are SDHC?

Here are how it works:
SD: up to 2GB --> FAT16 formatted
SDHC: from 4GB up to 32GB ---> FAT32 formatted
SDXC: from 64GB to 2TB ---> exFAT formatted (although some come with FAT32 formatted for compatibility reasons).

dont buy class 4 sd card of any size. class 4 cards dont work with optimus one. they will keep unmounting. any other class or size card will work. aka class 2,6,10
the class of the card is determined by the clad number depicted on the card itself. a class 2 card will have the digit 2 written inside a small circle. same way with all other classes.
higher class means faster operation and probably more cost.

hello I bought an optimus one p500h yesterday and it comes with a 8gb class4, and it works ok.

Since I keep seeing vagueness wrt exactly what the class rating of an SDHC card means, I'll spell it out:
Class X: guarantees MINIMUM write through put of X MB/s period nothing more nothing less.
i.e. read speeds can be anything as they're not mentioned by spec, latency can be anything again as not mentioned by spec, etc.
In the pre-SDHC days the VERY best uSD cards were those made in Japan by Toshiba(only manufacturer of uSD cards in Japan, might be re-badged but made in Japan is the giveaway). They maintained good read/write throughput and relatively low latency even when full. (All of those numbers tended to decrease as a uSD card became more filled.)
Made in Taiwan were next up. Passable, but no where near as good as Japanese.
Made in China bottom of the heap. I'd really only recommend using them if you had no other choice. Or could get by with R/W throughputs and latencies that were relatively poor and got much worse as the card became filled.
Also note there DOES exist a fairly rare pre-SDHC 4GB uSD card. I've never seen one personally but I know that they exist. Most were 128MB - 2GB.
Not sure if this still applies with SDHC as the controller electronics were changed and the min. write throughput spec added (mostly for video recording!).
All of this said I've got a PNY class 4 4GB uSD card that I'll have to try. The card is badged as PNY so I'm not certain who the mfg actually is. I'll see if I can't dig it up later IF it actually works correctly. (Only bought some of these since a b&m store actually had them at a close to decent price of $10 and they were suitable for my other devices.)

Mass confusion now, i dont use a custom rom, so i dont need a partion, sweet will just copy across, im using a class 4 card now and its working fine so not sure what class to get, i thought it was just a problem with this fone that happened to ALL classes.

I have a class 10 sd card, but its made in china and its very low quality.. The read and write speeds are totally unpredictable. Sometimes i get read speeds of 20Mbps, but other times, i get 2-3Mbps. It is these kind of low quality cards that you must avoid. Good quality Class 4s will not cause an unmount.
Eg: Sandisk Ultra (Class 4) are way faster than Transcend (class 4)
(From what i have seen personally)
One more thing, it was reported that Android 2.2.2 fixed the unmount problem. So, incase you experience unmounts, you can even try using a 2.2.2 ROM.
I have class 6 transcenfld and it's super fast. Around 11 mb write and 20 read.

I think if u can find a 8GB class 4 Patriot microSD card... just get it... i'm using it and no problem at all... stay away from A-Data or Kingston cards... most of people that having unmounting problems using these cards.
PS. this problem exists just in Froyo when u partition your card to install programs on SD. if u don't wanna use this feature... or if u wanna use Mik's Gingerbread... take any microSD you want. but if u wanna use this feature i think Patriot Card would be better.
I use a Sandisk 4 GB class 4 card and still have unmount problems.
simple copy past is not working if you are using app2sd.
if u copy and paste u will have to reinstall all the apps but the data will be ok try titanium backup (did not tested titanium, but fkd up everything when i tried with copy and paste )

I have a SanDisk 32GB Class 4 MicroSDHC, works perfectly and doesnt slow down the phone.
I have watched 1080 video via MHL from the SD card.
Yes, 32GB is max. Open case so you can see what sdcard goes inside. No it doesnt make your phone slower, I think. But 32+16 GB is too much, so it might lagg a bit.

As long as the SD card has good enough random reads/writes it wont slow the system down at all (aka as long as its a good card its fine, aka the Scandisk ones are a safe bet, and actually the lower classes have better random read/writes).
The only thing is that if you have a lot of media the media scanner will take longer to finish (derr).

I concur with Veyka, my Sandisk 32GB/Class 4 works more than admirably for pretty much any/everything I've thrown at it so far. And they're fairly cheap too (<$50 AUD for me).

It's better to take some class 6 or class 10 card (but class10 is abit expensive and its almost no difference in most cases on SGS2).
The card will not slow your phone by itself, but a lot of files or media can slowdown mediascaner abit and increase battery consumption by mediascaner.
Just wanted to jump in with a reminder. The class rating of the card refers to the write speeds. So the class is irrelevant when you're talking about the performance of opening/reading files. The class is only relevant when writing to it.
That said, get a brandnamed card. I recommend Sandisk. I have a Class 2 32GB Sandisk that actually performs (from my testing) faster than a Class 4 rating.

Yes SD card classes shows minimum write speed (because before classes some manufacturers was "cheating" using "×" as read speed)
But read speed usualy almost equal to write speed. So reading from class10 card is for sure faster than reading from class 4 card. Just check this article on wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#.C3.97_rating

That appears to be on a case-by-case basis depending on the card manufacturer.
From my own testing, my Class 2 32GB card can write at about 4MB/s (which is on par with a Class 4 card).
I also have a Class 10 8GB card which obviously can write faster than the Class 2.
But both of them are neck-and-neck when it comes to read speeds.

I don't see the point of paying a lot more (double and more) for a card with a higher class rating for pretty much negligible improvement in "performance". We are talking about a phone after all, and this card handles 1080 video (recording it/writing it to the card) just fine which is probably the most "intensive" activity the phone is capable of.

I have a Samsung 16gb class 10........ its the best card i've had... All i will say, pay a little more for a good brand, or your next thread you will be complaining about errors and sd card problems
For normal day to day usage in the phone there'd be very little difference in a class 4 or 10 card. However copying 32gb onto a class 4 card is a slow progress !! Spend the little extra and go class 10.

Didn't want to wait for one to arrive off eBay so a mate told me to go to Centrecom (Australia, Melbourne). Bought a class 10 for $50. Tests show write at between 10-11mb/s and read at between 18-20mb/s. Pretty happy.

Yep, same here. Stupid FAT32 doesn't let you copy files bigger than 4Gb though, so that sucks. Now if only there were some way to format the SD card using EXT2,3,4 or whatever, or get the Tab to easily recognize exFAT.
I did notice when i tried to copy a file from the internal memory to the external memory
It didnt work while i was unrooted. But since i have rooted i have not experienced this again..

Most manufactures says their devices is supporting microSD up to 32 GB, but really it's just a phrase.
I've tried 65GB microSD on my Galaxy S II and it worked then I tried it on my Galaxy S I also worked !! which made me try it on little Sony Xperia mini and also worked !!!
Just try it, Im sure it will work.

looking to maybe getting a micro sd card, not sure if i should go for the 32gb with price range of $30-$70 or fork out the extra money for 64gb, over $150. what would you guys recomend? and is it even worth it going for the 64gb at this point? i have the 16gb tab and using 16gb from original 7" tab.
Well.. currently the cheapest one i could find was at play.com and that's not cheap at all... can't we use the usb adapter and connect an external HD to the device?
I went ahead and bought the 64gb card ($152USD on Amazon) as I like to keep as much as possible on my tab. As far as a usb hard drive, I would think it would need to be on that does not need to be powered through the usb connection.

In terms of whether the 64GB is worth it: only you can answer that. Mine is basically full and I would like even more storage, some people can't even fill an 8GB card, so it's quite a personalised thing really.
You can use pen drives via the USB adapter if that suits your use.
It seems from other posts that 64Gb cards are entirely satisfactory but my additional question is "What class is optimal?" There are Class 4, Class 6 and now Class 10 cards with price generally higher for the higher class. I note that another poster has successfully used a Kingmax 64Gb MicroSDXC which, I believe, is Class 6.
Does anybody know what the specs are for the MicroSD slot on the tablet. Obviously, it would be overkill and a waste of money if the device cannot read and write at the higher speeds that the card supports. Has anyone done any benchmarking?

I think when it comes to the difference in class, the simple explanation is the random access speed vs sustained data transfer speed.
Correct my current understanding if I'm wrong, but generally speaking, lower class = faster random access speeds, but slower sustained data read/write, whereas higher class = faster sustained read/write speeds, but slower random access.
Can anyone confirm or expand upon this?

FYI... Sandisk is now selling an "Ultra" 64gb SDXC (micro SD) card that is rated Class 10 and is UHS 1. The "Ultra" tag refers to their class of cards that have 30MB/second read speed (unk. what the write speed is). Sandisk also has an "Extreme Pro" class of cards that have 95MB/second read speed, but the largest "Extreme Pro" in micro SDXC is currently 16gb. If you shop hard, you can find the 64gb "Ultra" SDXC card for less than $60 currently.
It's been previously reported that Razr supports SDXC cards, including 64gb (see this thread).
For anyone who might buy one, a word of caution. Put it in your Razr and format it there first before trying to use it on your PC. I'm not sure whether I received a defective card, or I somehow ruined my card by trying to format it to FAT32 on a Windows machine (using Paragon Partition Manager). I spent hours screwing with it before giving up and returning it to the seller.
I have the same 32gb version in my razr right now and it runs great. I assume the 64gb one wouldn't be any different.
Got mine for $23 on Amazon. Couldn't pass it up for that price.

It depends...
Is your USB adapter USB 2.0?
I typically use the SD Card slot with the adapter provided with the micro SD card.
USB for transfer unless you have a good adapter can be slower.
I use one 32gb class 10, works fine.

Have you tried a HD 1080p recording on your 32gb class 10 card ? , if yes - did you find any difference when you tried the same recording on a class 4 ( assuming 30 fps and standard cache)?
Got my one for a few weeks, phone has never been so slow.
Not faulty (tested the card multiple times) - anyone else having issues? I feel like I have a Galaxy S1. Just weird behaviour - Swype takes forever for k/b to appear, winamp takes forever for thumbnails for albums to appear - just apalling performance from my phone.

Try this... format the SD card from ur phone... increase the cache size of the card and give it a try..

Sandisk also has an "Extreme Pro" class of cards that have 95MB/second read speed, but the largest "Extreme Pro" in micro SDXC is currently 16gb. If you shop hard, you can find the 64gb "Ultra" SDXC card for less than $60 currently.
It's been previously reported that Razr supports SDXC cards, including 64gb (see this thread).
For anyone who might buy one, a word of caution. Put it in your Razr and format it there first before trying to use it on your PC. I'm not sure whether I received a defective card, or I somehow ruined my card by trying to format it to FAT32 on a Windows machine (using Paragon Partition Manager). I spent hours screwing with it before giving up and returning it to the seller.

I couldn't mount it or format it. My RAZR kept saying it was damaged. So, I formatted it in my PC first and all is well.
If you're under Windows XP, you'll need to have a program to do this. I used EaseUS Partition Master which you can get for free at http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html.
So far, the card works great and it's nice to have more room for DLC and songs.

I just orderd sandisk ultra 16gb and I will probably recieve it next week. I have atm 8gb class 4 card and I want to move all of my stuff from my 8gb card to my 16gb, what is the best way to do it?
Also do I need to do anything before I use it on my phone? Do I need to format it in my PC?

You can simply put it in the phone. No need to do anything beforehand. If it requires you to format, the phone will tell you to do so.
I've given up completely on trying to get this to work in my phone. The phone will recognize it as 64GB, but will freeze up on numerous occasions even if I'm not accessing it. Does no one else have the freezing issue? Running Flick 5.0 Tornado
So what's the concensus on this "extreme" cards' performance while in the phone? Are backups faster? Transferring files to/from a dekstop while connected via USB faster?
Say you have the same exact micro SD make, could be sandisk or Samsung, class 10. Has anyone found that even though the 64gb card is usable, but not advertised as compatible that problems have occurred using the 64gb card?
The most important thing is making sure nandroid backups do not get corrupted. Also the larger the card, does it take longer for the media scanner to run?

I think you would be taking a risk using a card not certified as compatible with the device. As for media scanning, it all depends on how much data is actually on the card, but of course it would take longer to scan a larger card (and prolong bootup, as well). I used to have just an 8gb card and noticed a dramatic change in bootup when I went to the 32gb card I now have because I was able to put a lot more of my MP3s and movie files on it.
So would it be accurate to say a nandroid backup is more likely to fail in a galaxy s ii using a 64gb card than a 32gb? And I mean data getting corrupted, md5 errors. Perhaps you remove the card/unmount it then try to later use it for backup.

The problem I have found using cards larger than what's specified compatible is that the OS will try to copy data to a sector outside those on the largest supported card and then when it tries to read them later it can no longer find them because it doesn't recognize sectors beyond the card size limit. It may show the files in a directory structure because of the MBR or filetable reference, but it can't find the actual data because the data sectors are not recognized.

I thought the max size supported was 32gb? Man I almost picked up that class 10 16gb Samsung at work (wouldve been $20 for an employee) but it turned out we had to order it which means no discount..

The max size supported is 32gb, but 64gb will work fine in many cases. Some users have reported needing to format the card to use the fat32 file system, others have had it work fine out of the box. I read CWM won't be able to recognize it unless its fat32 however.

Yeh unfortunately exfat isn't recognized, so gotta use fat32. Booo. Maybe some day
