i rooted the evo 3d and at first it would boot into cwm but now it wont....anyway i can fix this or do i have to unroot and re-root

Also, you can try to do a search for flash image gui on XDA and that will also let you flash your recovery on your SD card w/ out having to reboot and renaming a file... Hope it helps and good luck

Just load into bootloader then fastboot usb. Go over to your pc and into terminal navigate to your folder with adb tools and recovery image and type in fastboot boot recovery nameofyourrecovery.img. May I recommend twrp1.1.1. But the easiest way is like what zsibisi said.

u guys are the **** thanks it works now lol

I guess you have flashed a 2.3.3 kernel so you are experiencing issues.........so now just boot your phone in bootloader then select fastboot > connect your phone to pc (it should say fastboot usb on phone)> now open cmd > head to your fastboot folder in cmd> then type fastboot boot xxxxx.img (xxxx = your recovery img (cwm/twrp) ) > Now your phone will boot into recovery > then restore your Nandroid backup .......
Hope this helps
If the above didnt work try to flash boot.img from your nandroid backup using fastboot (not recovery) with command "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
press thanks if i helped you
is there a way i can do it without my computer im at work,so i don't have all my files on hand...thanks this has got me stomped......
I m sorry you cannot do it without a pc .....you know the limitations of htc unlock method...you can only flash kernels made for 2.3.4 from flash image gui......you can always download those fastboot/adb files from here or google for it.They are just a few kb's

Yes, as long as all the nandroid backup files are on your sdcard. Steps below.

This isn't true. Flash Image GUI will flash the kernel for any version, but if your system OS is not also updated at the same time, the device will not boot.
If you're looking to do a nandroid restore w/o using fastboot (or being attached to a computer), here are the steps I would suggest:
1) From Flash Image GUI, select the boot.img from inside of the custom recovery backup directory on the /sdcard. Flash this kernel.
2) Reboot directly into recovery mode. Run the nandroid restore for that SAME backup as the boot.img was pulled from and flashed via Flash Image GUI.
3) After nandroid restore finishes, reboot and the device should be back to the previous state found in the backup.
Remember, this is a work around for the HTC unlock and might not always be the best solution.
Keep us updated and let us know. Hope that helps!

If the device won't boot past the splash screen, chances are the issue is kernel related. For kernel related issues, the ONLY method provided by HTC via their unlock is to use fastboot to boot the recovery. This is the only accessible mode HTC grants write access to the kernel partition.
This is the only way HTC provides write access to the kernel for a device that is not booting properly. The command using fastboot is as follows: fastboot boot c:\recovery.img .
This command will temporarily load the custom recovery with kernel write access allowing a proper recovery to take place.
One reason the device is not booting could be the android OS version mismatches with the kernel, therefore the kernel's ramdisk is looking for files which are not present and cause the device to either freeze or reboot.
There are other reasons too, probably too many worth detailing out as the easiest route to solving the issue is to restore back to a known good working nandroid or cleanly load another known working ROM/kernel combination.
Hope that helps clarify! Best of luck!
Thanks to all you guys. Got it back running XDA is the best.

HELP! Can't get my recovery and backups back!

I installed that flash image gui app, tried a new kernel, I dont like it and tried to reset my backup from the cwm recovery I use to have, but the recovery wasnt there anymore and I had to flash the twrp recovery, which i dislike, and still cant figure out how to get my cwm backup of this rom back.
Check to see if the backup files are in the CWM folder if not then not to be a Debbie Downer but you're SOL. If they are boot into system and flash the recovery using Rom Manager then restore the backup like you normally would
I've tried that... I have twrp recovery, I've tried that and when booting into recovery it just shows the white HTC screen then reboots. I do have the backup in the cwm folder but can't flash it.

just reflash cwm recovery via fastboot.
How do I do that? I tried flashing it from twrp recovery but it doesn't see the file. It is in the root of my SD. It's cwm 5.0 shooter
cwm backups dont work with twrp backups and vice versa.
Load your phone into the bootloader( power button and volume down).
Then connect to computer via usb, and press power button again to enter fastboot and it should say fastboot usb.
Then in terminal/command prompt execute this command where "recovery.img" is the file name of your cwm recovery.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then when thats done execute this
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
Do i need to rename the cwm file, or use any program on the computer? I can get into the bootloader from my phone if there's an easier way, I don't quite understand that way. Also I have hboot 1.50 if it matters
it doesn't matter the name of the recovery but u just have to use that name instead of recovery.img when u type the command. since you have 1.50 your gonna have to use flashboot to flash anything when you arent able to boot into android.
I assume u have downloaded fastboot, adb, and the google usb drivers, since u have already rooted.
You will use your command prompt on your computer to boot phone into the recovery. See in 1.50 u can't just boot up the phone, goto recovery and flash things. You have to boot into boot loader, press power button when selector is on fastboot (normally default position aka first one in the list), then connect phone via usb to computer. The Red word fastboot should now say fastboot usb.
then execute the commands. "recovery.img" replace with your cwm file name
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
alright I think I figured it out, thanks a lot man!
and don't worry your not the only this happened to. I had this happen to me this weekend. I just got the phone 5 days ago and killed it. So i had a great weekend playing catch up to learn how to reflash on 1.50 HBOOT.

also if you still get white screen after you restore with cwm, its means the stock kernel didnt carry over. just reply if that happens.
once you loose its gone why dont you try 4ext custom recovery and gui doe's cause problem's ive used it and it wiped out my boot.img right now im useing 4ext as my custom recovery and it does'nt give any problems at all give it a try

NO bro, the apps works very well. It gets the Job done perfectly.
Suppose you were on a certain ROM and tried flashing a custom kernel with Flash Image GUI, and stuck in bootloop/htc screen , it doesnt mean that the Flash Image GUI caused that.
Even if you tried flashing the same kernel via fastboot boot recovery.img above the same ROM.......the result will be same i.e bootloop/htc screen.

it sounds like you didnt get a full copy of that recovery or one thing is you may have not let the file fully transfer and write itself to the card... try it again and post the size of the file youre using as cwm file
have u tried
fastboot boot recovery.img (rename cwm to recovery.img for ease)
from fastboot-usb mode .. afaik you can flash a whole rom+kernel enetering cmw from that command

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
that should flash the new recovery image to your phone then try

[Q] (BIG Problem/Question) Error after ROM Install. Please help.

i have been running Synergy Rom and causing a lot of problems so I have been tryin to install a numerous amount of roms and after wiping the phone back to factory and the dalvik then when its time to reboot the system i reboot the phone it just stays in the HTC boot up screen. so after a wait 10 or so min i just reload the Synergy rom which is the only one that works.
i am also running Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4 if that helps
i would really appreciate it if someone could point me into the right the direction thank you.
Are you on hboot 1.5? Are you flashing the correct kernel?
We're comin from a pure power source.
Yes it is and to be honest I haven't flashed them with any kernels cuz I never have before
Hmmmm, and you're doing a full complete wipe right? Which recovery are you using
We're comin from a pure power source.
Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4 and yes full wipe and dalvik.
Have you tried a different recovery?
We're comin from a pure power source.

ok as you know the roms come as .zips and we apply them through recovery.... some times that recovery doesnt writ the boot img correctly.... try installing ANY rom....then try to boot up... if it hangs at htc then pull the battery out then put it right back in and hold vol down and press power..then connect the phone to your computer so on your phone you see "fastboot usb"now the rom you tried installing that was the zip have a copy of that on your computer and open up with any program you use to open zips...extract that boot.img file to your fast boot file and where adb is too ,once extracted go back to your terminal window and type in
fastboot flash boot boot.img
it should say that its sending the data then writing it and then from there wait about 30 seconds and then select reboot and the rom should boot up

You cannot directly install ROMs with custom kernels on hboot 1.5 .
You always have to use "fastboot boot <your recovery>.img" or "fastboot flash boot boot.img" like the above post says..... If you dont use PC to flash ROMs with custom kernels , you will always get stuck on the HTC screen.
If you want to be able to flash ROMs / kernels / radios etc without PC, downgrade your hboot from 1.5 to 1.4.
Get flash image GUI from market to bypass fast boot and install custom kernels, or downgrade using unbeknownforce method and closeones live cd

Idk if someone already said this but for 1.5 boot you need to go into fasboot usb . Fastboot boot recovery.img
Replace "recovery" with recovery file name. If your using 4.0.1.0 it might be. Cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img something like that
Second option is use 4EXT and you won't need to use your computer to flash rooms or kernels
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
First I assume you have the adb drivers.
place new rom on sd card
boot phone in bootloader, select fastboot
Access the adb folder via CMD
type in fastboot boot recovery.img
it should say waiting for device then connect..
you'll see the recovery screen
this will let you wipe and install new rom on hboot 1.5

[q] help!!!!!! Bricked e3d recovery jacked up stuck in bootloader!!!

For people who came for an answer, here it is.
download android sdk
download fastboot drivers
get clockworkmod img and rename to imgfile.img
put img in adb tools
put adb, adbwinapi, fastboot, and the img file in c:/Android
plug your phone to the computer
enter the bootloader
click on recovery or fastboot doesnt matter since both will now take you to fastboot
goto computer
type in run in start menu
type cmd in run and hit enter
type cd c:\Android
type fastboot boot imgfile.img
you are now in recovery
go to mounts and storage and mount your device as a disk drive
download any rom to your computer doesnt really matter and put in on your sdcard. If you already have a rom on there then just use that.
unmount your phone
go to wipe data/factory reset and when it finishes flash the rom
once rom is done flashing reboot into android again.
your phone is partially fixed
now go to the market (if you flashed cm then flash the gapps.zip) and download "rom manager"
Then click on download clockworkmod 5.0.0.2 or something like that (first option)
Now go to rom manager and restore your backup that u made (If there was 1 before)
now it will be fixed and your bootloader will take u to recovery instead of fastboot when you click recovery xD
thanks xda
I flashed a rom and the rom must have been corrupted or something and now my phone is stuck rebooting and when I try to go to recovery or any option it takes me to fastboot so now my phone is basically bricked
Your phone is not bricked since your still able to turn it on.
Can you enter fasboot USB?
Send from my Evo 3D using Tapatalk
well it doesnt really turn on its a boot loop but whatever and fastboot is weird it doesnt want to work.
If your bootloader is unlocked make sure you flash the boot.img through fastboot and make sure you wipe

Are you S-Off or S-On? If S-Off, download a PG86IMG.zip of a recovery, and use your bootloader to flash recovery. From that point, just restore a backup or reflash a ROM. If you're not S-Off, I'd say you should try running an RUU, since you can't get fastboot to work. But I think you need to relock your device to run an RUU (if you're S on/ HTC Unlocked), so you'd still need fastboot. Do you have a different USB cable to try? I've seen them fail before even though they still work to charge.

Sounds like the drivers arn't installed right.. Like you said if he is S-ON and relocked he can run a RUU exe if he is CDMA...
If you are s off then you just need to reload another recovery. And then access a backup of a rom! Or just flash a new one. I had a issue just like this yesterday where my recovery was broken for some reason and had to go from twrp. 2.1 back to 1.1.1 and load another rom.

Ok, fail, i dont think i hav fastboot drivers downloading now
now cmd is stuck on "sending recovery"
Did you place a copy of the img into your fast boot folder and one in your adb tools folder ???
