Massive battery drain - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Hello folks,
This is my first post in the Ace forums, had a Wildfire S earlier (which I still think was a better phone )
Ok, so I got my Ace two days back. First thing I did was root it, installed CWM 5 and then installed a custom rom. My battery drained in 2hrs!!! I thought it must be a rom issue so I flashed another ROM and still having my battery drain pretty quickly. It goes from 65 to 41 if I just reboot it, it's that's BAD!
This wasn't the case with the stock ROM I used for about 5 hours. Some help will truly be appreciated

What use did you make to drain it in 2 hours? Heavy games?

Nope, nothing. As a matter of fact, I didn't even have any game installed. It was on standby all the time.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Is Link2SD a known issue in this regard (?) cos I realize the moment I downloaded and linked apps, the battery is starting to drain real quick!

I'm using a2sd on ics final flashed over ks9 baseband. In addition i'm using slaidfastmod and framework mod (you will find it in development section). Lately ice cream Sunday Rom has been pulled by developer, so ATM is not available. Cyanogenmod RC0 should be fine as well, as it is its base (search for it in the forum).

This was on medium usage, with about 2-3 hrs of 3g internet browsing, Facebook, SMS, calls, Bluetooth and screen brightness pretty high.

3G is an Ace killer. Make it easier to turn on/off, so the battery lasts longer

Using wifi saves more battery then using 3g. I've noticed it on my ace. My battery approx. Lasts me 1-2days. Using apps like juice defender helps battery last longer.

You can also try battery calibration (available on the market)

I dont think calibration helps with battery...
but juice defender really helps.
all you have to do anyway are,
1.reduce brightness to lowest.
2.Switch to 2g when you don't use data
3.switch off data, gps
4.disable sync and background data.
you can enable those when you want to use.

Battery calibration deletes your battery stats giving you more accurate battery statuses after you have switched roms.Switch off GPS and mobile data when not in use.Theres not much to do about this

Nope I don't think link2sd causes that kind of a problem.. I'm using link2sd in infinity rom and with music playing for more than 3 hours and with heavy wifi and 3g usage I used for around 8 hours.. And it's pretty good.. Also I have overclocked upto 902MHz on performance governor.. Try some tweaks and calibrate the battery properly..

I think Overclocking drains battery very quickly. Overclocking makes CPU & GPU very hot. And as you all know, loss of energy due to heat.

12 hrs is way too less...
if u are on stock 2.2.1, i would recomend to flash to something new 2.3.+
i haven't tried all the available roms, so can't comment on the other roms.. but i m currently using 2.3.4 stock and battery life is more than 30 hrs... with all day edge connected , atleast 20 minutes of phone talktime.. an hr of surfing.. music + games + chatting etc,,, so all together i m quite happy wid my battery of the phone compared to my usage...
p;s flashing your phones to new firmware can void your warranty..
pps; if u have an extensive talktime usage...then android is of no use... the battery dosen't last much on any model..

Upgrading to original 2.3.4 gingerbread will NOT void your warranty, since you don't root the phone and therefore don't break any "rules".
And I would also recommend upgrading to 2.3.4 because it's easy to upgrade, there's no risk in losing warranty and I usually go for 2 days without charging with couple of hours of gaming, music and texting

30 hours? Really? You must be a god or have power on your hands, because, I can't get more than 20hrs with my Ace.
Maybe calibrating your battery can improve battery life... Just root your phone then download battery calibrator app from the market.

All you guys need is a developer to build custom kernel and tweaks.

So what im saying is you guys need a DEV

Just got the I777

... about two weeks ago and I love it so far, best phone I've ever owned hands down. The only problem I've experienced is the battery... for example after a full charge, I surfed the web non stop on 4g (hspa) for an hour and 30 minutes and my battery is already down to 65%. Is this normal? My brightness wasn't even high, it was slightly less than half... seems kinda weak considering just about everyone says this phone has the best battery life of all high end Androids.
I'm on 2.3.6
My kernel version is 2.6.35.7
My build number is GINGERBREAD.UCKK6

It may be some other stuff as well. Look in the link below to see if you have any of the known battery drainers. I was suprised at what was causing a lot of my battery drain and after deleting the offending apps/services, I'm getting great battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308030
2.3.6 on the GS2 has known battery life issues. You can Google "2.3.6 battery life issues" to find links that I'm unable to post here. When originally on 2.3.4, I experienced great battery life - on par with my old iPhone 4. When I upgraded to 2.3.6, battery life was significantly reduced whenever I was connected to wifi (battery drained with the screen off as though I was actively browsing on it).
I concur with what audiotweaker states. You can always go back to a 2.3.4 kernel, easiest way is bundled with a ROM that currently loads that kernel.

Um, kernel has NOTHING to do with it. UCKK6 or UCKH7, they all use a 2.6.35.x kernel. Changing the kernel will do NOTHING to change the drain - it's a problem somewhere in the system image, not the kernel.
I did a simple root without any custom ROM using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
I had auto upgraded to 2.3.6 from 2.3.4. Using the method in that thread will root your phone + downgrade the OS back to stock 2.3.4.
I am having better battery life since then because of
- ability to better optimize the battery after rooting (Titanium bkp, access to Alarms log through BetterBatteryStats, ability to disable auto start of certain tasks using Super Manager, etc)
- OS 2.3.4 instead of 2.3.6
- misc other battery optimization techniques floating around on xda
Technically, 2.3.6 in general isn't the problem - it's the UCKK6 build specifically.
I don't think the I9100 2.3.6 bases have as many issues - BTHID still broken, but at least it seems like they have less drain issues.

(This was about the first week when I got the phone before I rooted)
I actually was able to talk to a few people at my local AT&T retail store. A few of my friends actually work there as well. I was talking to them about the battery life and they told me it wasn't actually 2.3.6, it was the build that comes with the phone (factory).
Then I got home, flashed a CFW. Battery now lasts about 2 days with just basic web browsing and texting.

Poor Battery life "ICS"

After updating ICS i root it straight forward, and experience the poor battery life, I waited 3 weeks and calibrated many times, and turn off all the unnecessary services as suggested in the different forums but result is same, before ICS, i was happy with 3 days battery life, but Now, it just keep the juice for 1 day that sux!
Notice, Android system is taking all the juice and its keep "Awake" why not in sleeping mode ? when not in use.

I recomend you to use this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521309,because default ICS kernel suck. I'm using I-Scream build 10 (which is a lite version of Nordic .562 FW) with this kernel, and battery drain is about 2% in 4 hours. Also, you should make different profiles (with setcpu),for example when screen is off set profile to 122-460 mhz, conservative mode.

Can we use that kernel on official ICS and locked bl and is there any fc, problem with wifi or bug?
Sent from my Neo V with supercharged ICS ^^
yes,it works with official ics. If you don't have wi-fi issues, flash it dirrectly, but if you have wi-fi issues install first this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609617,don't boot after install, and then flash Inteks kernel (without booting between installs). I'm using it on MT15i,and i don't have any lag or wi-fi issue. I don't know if it works with locked bl,because i have unlocked bootloader.
I think after update (wipe) phone is collecting info about battery and some other stuff, that's why your phone is awake all the time or maybe some app drains your battery?
Take a look at my stats.

Stock ICS shouldn't drain so much. Do a clean flash again.
Android OS should report higher usage than in GB, but not that high. Do a reflash.

Stock, clean ICS doesn't drain so much.
If it does, ether some modifications are made, or something is messed up while flashing.
Op. You said you've disabled some services and calibrated many times have you thought of just letting it settle.
Flash again, rather than trying to undo everything that you've done. This time give it a couple of days to calm down then investigate if needs be.

MeanBean is great, but poor battery life.

I am coming from MeanRom, which was fabulous.
MeanBean is very good too, but my battery life is miserable now. Looking in the battery stats the only thing that looks unusual is the Internet (meaning the browser app) is at 36 percent of the total battery usage.
Is anyone else getting miserable battery life, and what is your internet usage reading?

I'm on MeanBean .5 and my battery life, albeit not better than MeanRom, is not that bad. My internet usage reading is 8%. I usually don't leave my 3G/WiFi on all day and I only turn it on when I want to check something or get a MMS. I guess that's why my battery life isn't nearly as bad as yours on MeanBean.
So sounds like your battery life is about the same? Are you using the new kernel or the old one?
Yeah I would make that assumption. I'm using whichever kernel Mikey included in the Rom, which I'm assuming is the JB kernel because the ICS kernel won't work. I try to stay away from other kernels because the kernel Mikey includes in his Roms is usually tweaked to work specifically for his Roms.
Disable Google now, don't fill up every home screen with widgets, reboot and give the kernel a day to settle. That should improve your battery life to almost ics levels

People tend to look at the Siyah or Dorimanx kernels as they has quite a few tweaks. There are quite a few threads dedicated to squeezing the most out of the battery but there is no one fix that works for every one. For me the screen, and account sync are normally the main users
There are main threads on XDA such as

Do some reading there are apps like betterbattery stats that will show you what is keeping your phone awake but it comes down to how you use your phone to what will help the most.
Stweaks that comes with Siyah and Dorimanx has battery profiles that can give some generic profiles for battery life.

I have seen the norm is 3 to 4 hours screen on time so if you have the screen on all the time the battery will not last too long I did use Dorimanx and used STweaks to set the battery profile and it helped a lot but I like the performance more than longer battery life so set it back to default.
What ROM and kernel are you on

I see you are on Dorimanx 7.43 the newer 7.46 works quite a bit better for me. Try go into STweaks and try out the profiles for longer battery life out of interest
I use Neat Rom Lite but you will struggle to get much over 4 hours screen on time without getting an extended battery or looking at some tweaks on STweaks

One more thing, there's three version of the rom.Is LITE version the best?

The full is basically stock Samsung as is lite is some extra tweaks and all the Samsung apps removed but they can be re-added from the removed app zip file I just add one or two normally that I use and the themed version is old.
I use the light as don't need the Samsung apps but you can swap between them to try lite and full. If you make a nandriod backup of your current ROM you can always go back if not happy

Although you two seem to have found 'the best rom and kernel', this kind of questions are totally wrong. If this rom works out for you as 'the best' it's a lucky shot, but don't complain when it's not. It all depends on how YOU use your phone, so there is no such thing as a best rom. Next time please read the forum rules

I found the best solution to battery life was to buy 2 2000MWh batteries and a charging dock, now I never worry about battery life as I always have a spare battery with me and one at home on the charger, for me it's far better than the endless rom flashing and fretting on better or worse performance.
